What did it feel like going makeup free for a week? Well, let’s first start with why I even began this journey. I recently had an experience where I was judging my own mother- I know sounds horrible. Honestly, I feel bad even writing it. I was at church and I saw my mom and my first thought was, oh she isn’t wearing makeup. Now, my mom definitely doesn’t wear makeup all the time and doesn’t even wear a lot. She has amazing skin and is naturally gorgeous. However, whenever you go to church you put your face on- or at least that’s what I thought. I remember seeing her and thinking why aren’t you wearing makeup? Are you starting the trend like many women as they age and just go bare faced? I was concerned she wasn’t taking care of herself. Fast forward a couple of days later and I found out she couldn’t wear makeup for a while because she had a procedure done on her eyes. As you can imagine I felt horrible! What kind of daughter judges her own mother for not wearing makeup, but secondly what type of daughter does it after her mom has gone through several eye treatments? Well apparently me.
It got me thinking really hard. What is my relationship with makeup? Why did I feel the need to care if my mom was wearing makeup or not? Better yet, does makeup define my appearance? These are questions I really sat with for a while. Then I started to realize I didn’t like what my answers were. Who do I blame for these feelings of judgment on myself and others? Society, associations with family and friends and growing up reading the latest fashion and style magazines. Now I’m not trying to point fingers but I do want to bring to light these 3 areas as I feel they do affect us more than we realize.
Society- We see it on TV all the time, women who are successful put their makeup on in the morning and look put together before going to work. I mean do you really see successful women trotting into the office with no makeup? Maybe you do- which is great! But often I find we are portrayed that successful women put themselves together (hair and makeup) and unsuccessful women don’t. I even recently heard someone saying on social media how we should make sure we’re taking time to get our makeup on because we want to look good for our husbands and it sets the tone for the day. If my husband’s love is based on me getting my makeup on for the day, then is it even love?
Family/Friends- How you grow up obviously has a big effect on how you see the world. You may have grown up with a mom who never would go anywhere without makeup, you hardly knew what she looked like without it. Your friends started wearing makeup early on, and so you followed suit. You realized you got more attention from guys when you wore makeup, you felt accepted by your peers. Maybe your dad only complimented you when you had makeup on.
Fashion/Style Magazines- Yes, magazines. The power of magazines is real and I’m living proof. I remember I loved flipping through them as a teenager(keep in mind these are crucial formative years). Those glossy, perfectly polished photos called to me! I want my skin to look like that, I wanted that lip color for my lips, and I realized my eyelashes could use a boost. What really happened as I was perusing the latest magazines was the fact that I wasn’t measuring up. Mmm…sounds almost like social media these days! I realized I needed makeup in order to look like all the pretty models in the magazine. It could make me feel complete.
Barefaced for a week.
So here’s what I did…I went makeup free for a week. No makeup touched my skin. I was bared faced for everyone. It didn’t matter what was on my calendar. I want to share my takeaways and what I learned in the process about myself.
My skin actually looked so much better after a week of no makeup. It was clearer, healthier looking and less congested.
I saved time getting ready each morning.
I realized my identity was oddly tied up in “putting my face on” each morning. In the past if I didn’t put my face on then I was staying at the house all day and wearing lululemon pants. But when you are going to meet up with friends and you’re not wearing any makeup…things start to feel different.
I felt like I needed to explain to people I wasn’t wearing makeup- why? This was a weird realization. I noticed it first with my hubs and then on Instagram…it was so odd that I felt the need to almost apologize for not wearing makeup!
Although my face felt clean, I didn’t feel completely put together. It was like I kept forgetting something.
I realized how much my focus is on my appearance sadly.
It was weird to do my hair and wear nice clothes but not wear makeup…like I had all the pieces but one.
I kept thinking throughout the week, I wonder if people think I’m just not trying or caring for myself?
As you can see I had a lot of realizations as I went through this no makeup journey. Realizations I wasn’t necessarily proud of. But my hope is that by being vulnerable with you, it will cause you to take a deeper look at why you paint your face each day. It’s not that makeup is bad or the enemy. But the immense value and weight we place on it in our lives. I don’t want my girls growing up thinking makeup is needed for beauty. Beauty is so much deeper than that. Makeup is fun and I enjoy trying new lipsticks and color palettes! I don’t intend to stop. However, I will go days without wearing it, and being barefaced when it might seem uncomfortable. If I want my girls to embrace themselves fully, then I must first embrace myself. Flaws and all.
Beauty is not painted nails, a perfectly toned body, or wearing the latest makeup product. Sure those are pretty things but beauty is so much deeper. Beauty is seeing my daughter pick out her outfit for the day and wearing it proudly even when it doesn’t match. It’s seeing my Gracie Girl giggle at her sister. It’s watching my hubs sing my girls to sleep. Trust me, I ‘m not trying to get all mushy. But I’m trying to paint a picture of what beauty really is. It’s not the fake, the fluff or the exterior. It’s the simple things we see everyday that are truly beautiful. As a natural beauty blogger it’s important I share this message with my daughters. Makeup has it’s place as a fun hobby. But it’s not have it’s place as part of who I am. I’m not going to stop wearing makeup- no not at all. I’ve just become more aware of what I don’t want it to be and where it’s place is in my life. The minute I feel I’m not who I am without it, is the minute I need another makeup detox week to realign my true values.
Let’s stop letting society decide what beauty is and let’s make our own definition.

I’ve got the Best Green Beauty Facial Masks rounded out for you! Everything from a quick glow mask to a detoxifying mask and everything in between. There are so many great green beauty masks- it’s hard to just have one. They all really serve a different purpose too. What’s great about these masks is they aren’t filled with any of the nasties! A mask serves your skin in so many ways.
They make skin feel moisturized, revived…oh and let’s not forget the glow! Plus, masking is like having your own mini spa session, while in the comfort of your own home (a big deal when you’re a mama). As an esthetician, I’ve realized the mark of a good mask is bringing real nourishment to the skin. In conventional masks, you find nothing but junk…serious toxic junk. I looked up one of the most popular conventional masks out on the market and you know what’s in it? A ton of chemicals! What’s crazy is masks sit on your face for a good 15-30 minutes. A long time for chemicals to be soaking into your skin…um scary!
So now that you’ve tossed your conventional masks, let’s chat about what to replace them with.
Mermaid Mask-This mask is seriously so good. The founder Leah is a saint, no joke. I’ve gotten to know her on social media and she truly is the sweetest. She creates all of her products by hand in Kaui, Hawaii. Her mask is a little piece of heaven. With ingredients like Chlorella, sea buckthorn, spirulina and raw honey, this mask is pure decadence. A lot of masks moisturize after wearing, but you don’t notice a visible difference to the naked eye. Not the case with the Mermaid Mask, you’ll be glowing! It smells so insanely good too. You’ll be tempted to eat it. This mask is great for everyone. Acne skin, pre-mature, congestion, dryness and redness. Oh and P.S. when you buy it you must know that there is this thing called Mermaid Mask Monday on social media- where all the mermaids come out and wear their mask! Get your Mermaid Mask here!
Kokoleka Mask- Kokoleka, how I love you! This mask is something special. I love how Leah describes it on the bottle, a “Ritual Dessert Facial Mask”…can you say yum?! First let’s talk scent. It’s very similar to the Cleansing Powder, smells like sweet coconut, but with a chocolate twist because of the cacao-I so dig it! This mask is different than the Meli Glow. Kokoleka is meant to detoxify and purify your skin. It comes in a powder form, and is activated when you add water. I use a small ceramic bowl and brush, and apply it liberally all over my face. Don’t add too much water, you want it to be a thick creamy texture. I applied too much water the first time, and it was more soupy. It does harden but not like a typical clay mask that drys your skin out. This one isn’t drying at all! Your skin feels smooth and radiant. I visibly notice a difference in my skin every time I use it. I’m convinced everyone needs this! Get your Kokoleka here!
I love this mask! It makes my skin glow in minutes- no joke! It apply it all over in the morning and then grab my toothbrush and then rinse off once I’m done brushing my teeth. It feels so hydrating and soothing to the skin. It gives a slight exfoliation too with herbal grains. The raw honey in this mask draws moisture to the skin while soaking up all the excess oils at the same time. What I love is that this mask can be used daily as a cleanser or as a mask a couple times a week. It really lives up to it’s name: Glowing Mask. I promise you won’t be disappointed! I can’t get enough of this decadent skin treat! Oh and did I mention it’s only $30? Get your mask here! Use coupon code: GURLGONEGREEN for 20% off!
This mask and wash is by far one of my very favorite masks! It is just delectable. The smell literally transforms me to a calming and soothing place with cacao, honey and mangosteen. I can’t get enough. As I write this my jar is completely gone…I know sad. I literally used every last drop. The beauty of this product is it can be used in many ways. One way is as a cleanser. I use it to rub away all the day’s grime and wipe off with a warm washcloth. My skin feels renewed and refreshed. I also love using it as a mask. First, I would use the Purity and Grace oil cleanser first to remove all the dirt from the day and then follow with the Sweet Serenity Mask. I would then go about my nighttime routine and then at the end wash it off with a warm washcloth. My skin loved every drop. This little ritual of cleaning and masking has given my skin some serious restoration and glow. I would also use this as an exfoliant in the morning and leave it on after rubbing on my face while I brushed my teeth. It worked perfectly as a mask/cleanser/exfoliant combo. After the mask my skin is hydrated, balanced and glows. I can’t say enough about this product! Get your Sweet Serenity Mask & Wash here!
This mask is unlike any mask I’ve tried and it performs unlike any mask I’ve used for brightening. The mask is for sun damaged, mature skin and is packed full of potent vitamin c. I also has a blend of active ingredients. It literally is a blend of plants and essential oils- no crazy preservatives. It’s in powder form too, so the ingredients are very potent because there is no water dubbing them down. When you add water, it activates the mask right then and you’re getting the best stuff! Since it’s in a powder form and contains plants, it does have bits and pieces here and there. But I love that about it! You are literally using the earth to nourish and treat your skin- how cool! Get your Laurel Brighten Mask here!
I’ve had the pleasure of sampling this mask in the past and it was gone too quick! It smells amazing, like your favorite berry jam. It does wonders to awaken the skin and gently exfoliate. Say goodbye to dull looking skin with this baby. The ingredients again are so good. Raw honey, and raw royal jelly, are just a few that make this mask truly decadent. Not only does my skin look brighter, and more even after using, but I love knowing that it’s fighting signs of anti-aging with it’s super antioxidant vitamin b found in royal jelly. This is a cult favorite from Laurel’s line and for good reason! Get your Laurel Berry Enzyme Mask here!
Problem Solver- The Problem Solver does just that, solves your skin’s problems. It a little miracle in a bottle. I use this on my skin after late nights, when I have a blemish or when my skin is just congested. Unlike the others I’ve mentioned, this mask is a powder and doesn’t activate until you mix it with water. I love May’s philosophy in doing it this way. You are getting the full potency every time you use it, since it activates with water. With ingredients like bamboo charcoal, raw cacao and soil nutrients, your skin will be in it’s own little wonderland. My skin is renewed and revived after this mask. Oh and did I mention it will literally last you forever?? The jar is huge! Trust me, you need this in your life. Get your Problem Solver here!
Honey Mud- This mask literally looks like chocolate pudding. Not only does it look like chocolate pudding but it smells like it too! The mask is a thick texture. It’s really just all things wonderful. Ok, I know you want more details on what it does to the skin. Well, allow me to explain. It does so much, from bringing balance to stressed skin, to using enzymes to lightly polish skin and reveal a brighter more even complexion. Your skin feels so nourished and hydrated. I even wear this in the shower if my skin is feeling extra dry to protect my skin from the heat and to keep all the moisture intact. A definite skin treat again and again! Get your Honey Mud here!
First, it comes in this chic glass jar. You open it and instantly get a whiff of rich cacao-just like the name suggests. I’m in love! It looks like dark rich frosting but not the kind you eat. This decadence is the kind you apply to your face. Before application I mist Josh’s Hydrating Accelerator over my face. Leaving my skin dewy and ready for masking. I just use a spoon to apply some of the mask on the back of my hand and then use my fingers to apply to my face. I’ve found the formula is too thick for a brush. Once applied, I wait 45 minutes to let the mask do it’s magic. You can do less time but I like to get the full effect. Then I just wipe off with a washcloth. After, my skin feels revived, refreshed and awake. I love applying my oils after and then waking up to skin that is seriously happy and radiant. The mask detoxifies while at the same time nourishing and giving back so many nutrients into the skin. A serious skin treat! So what’s in this mask that makes it so magical?! The ingredients in the mask are amazing and really make this “glow” happen. Cacao is a known antioxidant that helps to slow the aging process and beef up collagen to give skin it’s health back. Plus, it helps to bring circulation to the skin, causing it to absorb nutrients better. If that wasn’t enough there are a chockfull of plant oils that help moisturize, repair and calm the skin. Best of all? This mask is perfect for any skin type! Dry, sensitive, oily-anyone can benefit-I’ve seen it for myself. I have dry skin and my sister has oily and it does wonders for us both. Get your Josh Rosebrook Cacao Antioxidant Mask here!
The Bean Antioxidant Mask does not disappoint. It’s filled with pure ingredients that literally are nourishing the skin as it sits on top of your face. It like a thick mud but not drying like you might assume. It goes on easy and then dries. However, my skin doesn’t feel dry after using it. Instead, it feels like it just received a surge of adrenaline to the skin- in the best possible way! I know, weird way to describe it but my skin was more awake and the blood flow to the skin was so apparent. It was as if my skin had a good workout and was shining from the inside out. It smells divine. A sweet smell with notes of cacao and vanilla, ylang ylang and sandalwood. My skin also feels much smoother, and clear. It’s evident the mask actually gets in and detoxifies the skin. Get your Bean Antioxidant Mask here!
This mask does exactly what it says- it moisturizes and exfoliates. It’s a gel consistency. It gets rid of all the dead skin and reveals that inner glow(aka new skin). I leave mine on for 5 minutes. It’s especially great right before a big event or night out when you want your skin to be glowing. It also gives you an even smooth canvas for flawless makeup application. You won’t be disappointed with this mask-Get yours here!
I love this mask! If you want to see a noticeable difference the minute you take off your mask, then this is it. I had heard people rave about it in the green beauty community for quite sometime and let’s just say It did not disappoint. Tata Harper has created some amazing skincare products, that are not only natural but perform. So often a product can be clean, but it does’t do anything. Tata’s products are the opposite. Having tried several other products, I’m always impressed with the quality and difference I see in my skin. The resurfacing mask is a gel like substance that looks clear when applied. You leave it on for 30 minutes and bam, your left with that lit from within glow. I love doing this in the morning before I put on my makeup. It literally exfoliates and removes the dead skin cells, all while minimizing pores and redness. You are left with revitalized skin. It’s really more of a peel than a mask. I use it once a week. It is suitable for all skin types, but if you do have sensitive skin I would patch test before trying. Another great perk about Tata products? They can be found in mainstream stores like Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Sephora. Get your Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask here!
This mask gets you glowing in 3 minutes flat- just like the name suggests. It’s perfect for the most sensitive skin types. Worried your skin might react to a mask? This may be the one for you. Using enzymes to dissolve dead skin cells, this mask does in 3 minutes what some some masks take 15 or 20 to do. It looks like a gel and feels lights and refreshing on the skin. If you’re perpetually running late, this may be the mask for you! I put it on before I brush my teeth and rinse off once I’m done. The perfect amount of time to get a quick glow for the rest of the day. Get your Ursa Major Flash Mask here!
My Top Green Beauty Mascara Picks is here! Having been in green beauty for over seven years now, I’ve tried my fair share of mascaras. I’m pretty picky when it comes to a stellar formula too. It has to meet some strict requirements. I mean a girl doesn’t want just volume, but length, separation, and maybe even a bit of drama. Who’s with me?!
I had some standards as I tested out mascara. There have been some mascaras I’ve noticed some people pegging as “clean” but they had questionable ingredients. For example, if a mascara had phenoxyethanol in it-I didn’t even try it. My top recommendations are completely clean. However, there are a few ingredients here and there in some of the other mascaras that rate a higher score on EWG. In comparison to conventional mascaras, I think they’re pretty good. But that’s a decision you have to make for yourself.
Also, a few tips on mascara I’ve picked up along the way. I’ve found for me any mascara, whether conventional or green beauty mascaras, they all do better after a week or two. It helps when they’ve been exposed to some air. It makes them become a little more buildable. So don’t give up on one after a day or two-give it at least a week. Always swirl the brush inside to pick up product, don’t pump. Once your mascara gets clumpy it’s time to get a new one, typically 3 months. Oh and side note-I never wear mascara on my lower lashes. I find I haven’t found a solution to the under eye smudging that occurs. Plus, I find I don’t need it.
Formula- Ok, so I did try this mascara when it first came out over two years ago and I didn’t like it. It stung my eyes pretty bad and there wasn’t anything amazing about it. However, they re-did the formula and I have to say it is completely different and I LOVE it! This is hands down my favorite mascara in green beauty now. I know, that says a lot but it’s true. The formula checks all the boxes. It offers thickness, length, separation- it’s just awesome! The formula isn’t too dry or too wet and I love that I don’t have to apply 5 coats of mascara to see product on my lashes. In just two coats my lashes are instantly lengthened, thicker and have overall more volume. I’m sold! On one end of the mascara wand is a primer and the other the mascara color. I apply the primer first and then the mascara.
Smudge factor/Flaking-Doesn’t flake or smudge!
Brush- The brush is longer and thinner, with a slight curve.
Price- $22(and even cheaper if you bundle it with two other items from Honest Beauty)
Formula- It gives my lashes volume, separation and some drama. It definitely lifts them up and creates a lash that you can’t help but notice! I love how you can build the formula on top of your lashes. The formula is overall thicker but easy to apply to the lashes.
Smudge factor/Flaking- I didn’t have any smudging or flaking.
Brush- The brush on it is different than any other I’ve used. It starts out wide and then gets narrower. Great for getting the bitty lashes in the corner of the eye.
Formula- The formula is pretty wet. It gets better the more air gets to it. Once I apply the first couple coats I move to the next eye and then come back to the first eye. It then is easier to build it up more. It really gives great length and separation, not as much volume.
Smudge factor/Flaking- It did smudge a little if I wasn’t careful letting it dry. But no flaking.
Formula-This mascara gives big, separated, pigmented lashes. I had so many people comment on my lashes when wearing it. Some mascaras will sting my eyes when they get wet but not Crunchi’s. It checks all my mascara boxes!
Smudge factor/Flaking- It only starts to flake when the bottle is almost empty and it’s time to get a new tube.
Brush- The brush is excellent! A big fat brush- just the way I like it.
Formula- The formula is drier. It takes a few strokes to get the product on your lashes. But once on you can really build it up on the ends to lengthen. It gives my lashes separation, volume, and length. Plus, some thickness.
Smudge factor/Flaking- Overall the smudging is minimal to none. I don’t notice smudging as much as flakes sometimes as I’m nearing the end of the tube. It’s a good reminder to switch it out.
Brush- It comes with a thick, fat spoodle brush. Love the brush!
Formula- This mascara is especially great for lengthening. It also does an amazing job of separation. It builds up quite well too after you let it dry for 30 seconds and go back and add some more. It’s a wetter formula overall. It doesn’t claim to be waterproof but water resistant, which is pretty awesome for a mascara in green beauty.
Smudge factor/Flaking- It can smear a bit if you don’t let it dry first. Once you let it dry though it doesn’t flake.
Brush-The brush is curved a bit, thinner and longer.
Formula- I initially didn’t really like this mascara but after giving it two solid weeks I really liked it. Initially it was hard to get the product off the brush. In my opinion, it gets better as more air is exposed to it. It gets a little more goopy and helps the product to be able to build on your lashes. It didn’t give me quite as much length as I would like but definitely gave my lashes a bit of drama. It’s not a lightweight mascara, you can see there is product on your lashes. Overall, definitely a great product. There is a couple ingredients in it that scored a 5 or higher on EWG. However, they don’t seem significant enough, especially with some data gaps.
Smudge factor/Flaking- It didn’t flake on me until the end of the tube. Then I noticed some flakes around my eyes.
Brush- The brush wasn’t my fave- it’s the new high tech rubber brush. I’m more into the old spoodle brushes.
Formula- This mascara definitely gets some good product on your lashes. It definitely gives your lashes some drama and lift. It seems a little wetter of a formula. It’s a little harder to build the product on the lashes unless I wait a minute or two for the first coat to dry. The only thing I noticed was some irritation when my eyes would water-which was randomly when I had my second baby-hormones are real people! I feel the formula got thicker and better the more I used it and air got to it.
Smudge factor/Flaking-It does smudge a little the first week or so because the formula is wetter. However, once you use it more the formula thickens and I didn’t have a problem with smudging.
Brush- The brush is a big fat brush- just the kind I like!
Formula-This a great everyday mascara, for someone who doesn’t want anything too dramatic. Adds great color definition and builds well too. It comes off easy at the end of the day. It’s a great pick for those who have sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers. It isn’t going to give you the drama or vixen lashes but a great option for those wanting something a little subdued and have sensitive eyes. I also love how easy it is to find. They sell it at most Whole Foods and natural groceries.
Smudge factor/Flaking-It doesn’t smudge or flake on me.
Brush- The brush is a standard mascara wand. Not big and gets smaller at the tip of the brush.
This does cross over into the $30 range, which I said I wouldn’t buy. I didn’t buy this one, it came in a beauty subscription box. I wasn’t impressed with it. The formula was so wet and it left my lashes more limp than vixen. It smudged and came off easily too. At $33.20 a pop, I was disappointed in the overall performance of this mascara.
This was probably the biggest flop. If you’ve been around green beauty long enough you know RMS Beauty. Their products are superior and ingredients top notch. However, it unfortunately didn’t translate into their mascara. The product is almost invincible on my lashes. I had to coat them but even then you could hardly see the product or a difference. It flaked too. There were some questionable ingredients too. Not worth it at $28.
This is similar to RMS mascara in my opinion. It was hard to see the product on my lashes or even notice I had on mascara, it was so subtle. If you like your mascara to look as natural as possible then this would be your mascara. But for me I want some drama in my lashes! $24
Juice Beauty Mascara-
This did absolutely nothing for my eyelashes- like nothing! It’s such a wet formula and doesn’t build, add volume or anything. Wouldn’t recommend this at all.
That sums up my mascara post! I hope it helped you have a better idea of what mascara you should go for. Let me know what mascara you’re loving! XO
