CLEAN BEAUTY Makeup mascara

Have you ever wondered what was in that long tube of black goo we call mascara?  According to Women’s Health, 65% of women wear mascara every day, making it the most popular eye makeup used.  Yet, I would venture to say most women don’t know a thing about what’s in their favorite black tube.  Well, I was like most women just enjoying the creative powers of my mascara as it made my eyelashes go from spindly average to va va voom, until one day I did a little research of my own.  This research left me flabbergasted…yes I said it, flabbergasted!  I mean how much could a little tube really carry …right?  WRONG!  Here’s the oh so scary news:  Most mascaras contain mercury, coal tar, formaldehyde releasers, petroleum distillates, vinyl, parabens, phthalates, and triethanolamine…can you say scary… three times!  And not only does it contain all these big word toxic ingredients but over half of us our putting them near our eyes every single day!  Yes, gasp if you’d like, I sure did.  So why don’t we want these big long words in our black tubes?  Well, for starters they’re toxic and can cause an array of nastiness in our bodies, such as brain damage, cancer, liver problems, hormonal disruptions, endometriosis, miscarriages, and birth defects…just to name a few.  Now you might be thinking, great I’m going to have to give up my magic tube of goo…But alas, have no fear we live in the 21st century, where choices are abundant and there are many natural options.  Some of my faves are listed below.  So next time you’re shopping for mascara check the ingredient label unless you want a side of coal tar on your pretty lashes!

Couleur Caramel Masacara– My all time favorite natural mascara hands down!  It’s going to give you lift, separation and length…it’s the Mercedes of natural mascaras ladies, thank me now!

Dr. Hauschka Volume Mascara– This is a good all around every day mascara that will get the job done.  Doesn’t run but it also won’t give you those vixen lashes either.

Buy it at:  You can find it at most Pharmaca stores as well as online at

100% Pure Mascara– My most recent fave, this stuff offers the perfect combination of length and separation.  Plus, it can build up in length quite well after you let it dry for 30 seconds and go back and add some more. It doesn’t claim to be waterproof but water resistant, which is still pretty awesome for a green mascara. Bonus: it smells like blackberries! And at $21 a pop, it’s not bad for a green mascara that actually gets the job done!

ZuZu Luxe Mascara– A great everyday mascara, for someone who doesn’t want anything too dramatic.  Adds great color definition and builds well too.  It comes off easy at the end of the day.  It’s a great pick for those who have sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers.

Physician’s Formula Organic Wear 100% Natural Origin Jumbo Lash Mascara–  This mascara offers great pigment and hold throughout the day.  You can definitely tell you’re wearing mascara, because the pigment is so rich.  However, it doesn’t quite give me the length like some others do.  If you already have long lashes, this may be just your ticket!  I love that you can get it at the drugstore too, as opposed to ordering it online or having to search and find a store.

      Hi Rachel!

Yay! Thanks for reading! Sorry, would have responded sooner…was under the weather the past week. I would recommend ZuZu Luxe liquid liner. It will literally stay on the whole day and doesn’t smear. Most natural pencil liners I’ve found don’t stay on unless I apply eye shadow afterwards. I get the liquid liner in the colors Tuareg and Raven. I find that the Tuareg is so dark, even though it is brown. Hope that helps and please feel free to ask questions anytime! 🙂
