Wow, this was a hard one for me to switch over to. Not that I didn't want to, I did but there just wasn't a lot out there that actually performed. Being a hairstylist makes it even harder. But thankfully green hairsprays have come a long way in 5 years, and there are non toxic ones that work. Can I get an amen?! Now I will give a little disclaimer. These by no means are going to feel like an aerosol hairspray…yeah, sorry. Did you know aerosol hairsprays top the list when it comes to toxic chemical exposure? You wouldn't think working in a hair salon would be considered such a toxic job but it is. Think of all the countless hours you're breathing in harmful chemicals! Aerosol hairspray is basically a concoction of chemicals, from glue, polymers, and solvents. The propellant used to make aerosol hairsprays are anything but natural. Plus, did you know breathing in chemicals is the fastest way to get it into your bloodstream…scary. Yeah, sorry but that stuff is just downright toxic and we don't want to be anywhere near it.
A pump version is so much better, for a variety of reasons. One, it doesn't create a fine mist like the aerosol, and so your less likely to breathe in chemicals. Two, it doesn't need a propellant, and so it isn't affecting the environment by contributing to global warming…hello!
Now that you know why aerosols are bad and why you should use a pump, let's go over which ones are the best (or my current favorites). Also, a little disclaimer: My hair is thin and fine, so what works for mine may not be perfect for your hair. However, I like each of these for different reasons and styles. I've listed below what hair type I would recommend them for.
This is my current love and most recent hairspray find. I had heard a ton about Josh's products but was a little reluctant to try. I mean, everyone always promises the moon and the stars. I had to see for myself. Well, let's just say this baby did not disappoint. First off, I love the smell! It has a list of essential oils but the ones that stick out to me are the rosemary and lavender. I love knowing exactly what I'm breathing in, no hidden fragrance! Second, it doesn't goop up when you spray. It actually has a mist feel(but a good mist obviously), and it's not an aerosol. Yeah, pretty cool. Lastly, it just works. With my hair being fine and thin, this product delivers hold throughout the day, volume, and doesn't get crunchy…you know what I'm talking about. It's just good stuff. I would recommend this for anyone transitioning from a mainstream hairspray. It's going to give you the look and feel of what your used too. You need it, trust me! (Gluten free)
So this has been my bread and butter for the last couple years. It holds up, is free of toxic chemicals and smells earthy. It doesn't leave my hair with a plastic feeling, but just a really great medium hold. I love that it feels light on my hair and doesn't weigh it down at all. The spray is more direct than the Josh Rosebrook hairspray, and not as mist like. The Josh Rosebrook has a bit more hold to it as well. This is more of a medium hold spray and I would recommend it for those with natural wavy/curly hair. It's going to provide that hold but with a little swing to it. Also, for someone with thick/coarse hair that doesn't need a ton of hold. (Gluten Free)
This is a great hairspray for those wanting something to give them more bounce to their hair. It doesn't offer as much hold as the previous two but more of that messy, tousled look that's in. What's great about this product is you can spray it on your hair wet or dry. For wet, spray it on and blow dry for added volume. You could also spray, scrunch and let it air dry. For dry, style as usual and spritz on as a finishing spray. It smells so fresh and lively. I love getting the beachy waves from this spray and then finishing with one of the previous hairsprays for a bit more hold. This is great for wavy/curly haired peeps. It's going to freshen up your locks and bring a little bounce to them. I also like if for thin/fine hair because it's so light and doesn't weigh the hair down. Great for getting the messy/tousled look I mentioned without a ton of product. (Gluten Free)
There you have it! My current top picks for natural, non toxic hairspray. What are your faves? Would love to hear! Leave me a comment.
