Beauty Heroes June Discovery: Honua

It’s the beginning of the month, which means Beauty Heroes June Discovery: Honua is here!  Honua is no stranger to Beauty Heroes, but the products being showcased this month are.  This month we are seeing a day cream that has an spf 30 sun protection in it, plus a mask.  Did I mention Honua is based in the Hawaiian islands?  You get a little taste of the island in there products- who can’t love that?!  If you haven’t heard of Beauty Heroes, allow me to share with you this stellar green beauty box and the founder who started it.

Beauty Heroes was founded by Jeannie Jarnot.  A longtime spa director herself and healthy beauty expert.  I had the pleasure of meeting Jeannie last year at IBE, and she is truly one of the sweetest people.  Beauty Heroes is a monthly beauty service that selects only the best clean beauty brands.  Each month you can find one to two full size truly heroic products in each box.  The products typically range from skincare to haircare products.  However, every 3 months Beauty Heroes offers a makeup box as well that’s optional for members or non-members.  I absolutely love their “Use Less, Love More” philosophy.  By only getting one or two products, you allow yourself to truly experience them.  Of course you can trust their picks, as they are strict on their integrity standards.  What’s not to love about this whole concept?  As a Beauty Heroes Ambassador, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to be part of such a movement.

On to the review…

So I haven’t tried a ton of products from Honua, so I was excited to see them in the Beauty Heroes box!  Honua skincare line is based off of the healing practices and medicinal herbs found on the Hawaiian islands.  The founder Kapua Browning, the founder is a native Hawaiian herself.  She grew up on the beautiful island of Oahu.  After growing up in the sun she started to notice skin damage in her early 20’s.  She studied aesthetics, herbalism and after years of practice created what is now Honua Skincare.

Being a native Hawaiian, her goal is to share her love of the Hawaiian culture and practice in her creations. Once you smell her skincare treats you will feel transported to the island life.  After all the skincare line is named Honua in Hawaiian, which means earth.  The founder loves to protect the land where she grew up and donates a portion of her proceeds to three organizations preserve such things as coastlines, forests, reefs and wildlife.

Malu-

This month’s heroic product is called Malu, which means shade, shelter or protection.  The name couldn’t connect more to the product!  This is exclusive to Beauty Heroes and the first time we are seeing it.  Malu is a protection day cream with spf 30.  It comes in a dark glass pump bottle- I love that you can turn the cap for when you travel.  It comes out white when you apply it to your skin but quickly fades to clear as you rub it in.  The natural sun protectant in the formula is non-nano zinc oxide.  It feels SO nice on the skin.  It hydrates but doesn’t leave behind a greasy residue.  It really feels like a nice primer too.  Really filling in lines and creating a perfect canvas for makeup application.  I also felt I had a bit of a glow using it.  I really dig it!  Some facial sunscreens can feel heavy or greasy but not Malu!   A great way to protect your skin the summer months especially but even year round.

Moana Mask-

This mask is made for days spent in the sun.  The ingredients are meant to revitalize and regenerate the cells, using ingredients from the ocean such as Hawaiian spirulina, and blue green algae.  It also contains a long time Hawaiian healing plant called Laukahi.  These ingredients help bring calm and healing to the skin.  Unlike some mask that are more pasty or thick, Moana Mask feels like a heavier cream on the skin.  I applied it after toning and left it on for 15 minutes.  My skin felt hydrated and renewed after using the mask.  The scent reminds me of the leis they give you when you get off the plane in Hawaii- a pleasant memory indeed!

We are also seeing a special sidekick in this month’s box- a glass straw!  This ultra chic glass straw is one step in helping to reduce the plastic craze that surrounds us.  Take this with you in your purse or your car and say no to plastic straws when out and about.  This small step makes a world of difference and also helps to get people thinking about one time use plastic.

This box couldn’t have come at a better time with summer almost here!  I will be using Malu all summer to keep my skin protected without the greasy feeling. If you’ve never been a Beauty Heroes subscriber I recommend signing up!  The value this month was $90!  You can sign up here!
