10 Best Clean Concealers For All Skin Types

Concealer is so versatile. It can make a full makeup look complete and flawless or it can be used alone for more of a no makeup makeup look. That's why I am sharing the top 10 clean beauty concealers that I have found over MANY years of testing.

I am sharing all the very best clean concealers after YEARS of testing different brands and products in the clean beauty world.

I get it, I once was there too.  The thing is everyone looks for different things in their concealer.  Some want an under-eye concealer and some want to hide imperfections.

And yes, under-eye concealers are a lot different than a concealer you want to use to cover your zit- just sayin’.  I mean you can use a lot of under-eye concealers on your face too but you probably don’t want to use a lot of heavy concealers under your eyes.

So, I’m outlining the best concealers in clean beauty – including what they’re best at when concealing and how I use them.

What Is Concealer?

Concealer when it comes to the beauty industry is exactly what it sounds like. It helps to conceal some of those skin imperfections – like blemishes, age spots, redness, darkness under the eyes, dark spots, etc. Whereas foundation is more so meant to provide an even base for the rest of your makeup.

They can be used together, or not. But, the thing is, you want to make sure you are using the right kind of concealer and using it correctly to get the most out of your product. Plus, if used incorrectly your makeup won’t look natural and can end up looking cakey. No worries, I am sharing the best performing concealers that still use clean ingredients. Literally the best of both worlds!

The clean beauty industry has so many great concealers to offer!

Types of Concealers

There are different types of concealers and of course they are meant for different things.  I’m going to share all the different formulas in hopes that it will help guide you on which one to get.

  • Pencil Concealer– Helps to conceal blemishes, and good for on the go since it’s solid and less mess. Also, good for highlighting the face. Pencils offer a thicker consistency.  They are similar to a cream concealer but in pencil form.
  • Cream Concealer– The consistency of a cream concealer is thicker, gives more of a matte finish and is good for helping to conceal blemishes, tattoos and deep pigmentation.
  • Liquid Concealer– This type is great for under the eye area and for blending into the skin. Great for evening skin tone.
  • Pen Concealer With Brush Tip– This is more of a sheer formula and great for under the eye area.

Concealer Application Tips

  • You can use most concealers as an eye primer too!  Just apply on top of your eyelid before eyeshadow.  It helps to make your eyeshadow pop, plus gives your eyeshadow something to adhere to so it stands out.
  • Use a concealer to highlight your face by applying concealer where you would naturally use a highlighter.
  • Use concealer on the inner corners of your eyes to make them appear brighter and pop.  Also, helps to make them look less tired.
  • If your goal is to cover dark under-eye circles, then make an upside-down triangle under your eye area with your concealer.  This will help brighten your whole face.
  • Typically you will apply your foundation first, then your concealer.
  • Highlight under your brows with concealer.  This helps bring your eye area up- it’s an instant eye lift!
  • Orange or pink concealer cancels out dark circles.
  • Green concealer is for blemishes and red spots.
  • Yellow concealer is for evening out skin tone.
  • If using your finger to apply concealer, use your ring finger which has the least amount of muscles.
  • If your concealer tends to look cakey, blot with a tissue under the eye area to soak up excess oil.
  • Apply a translucent powder after you apply under-eye concealer to help set it and take away oil.  This also helps your eye area to look more awake and not tired or drab. Check out my favorite Talc Free Setting Powders here!
  • If you mess up on your eyeliner, use some concealer to hide mistakes.
  • Use concealer to help prevent bleeding lipstick.
  • Use concealer to help cancel out redness before applying lipstick.  This helps you to achieve the true lipstick color.
  • Want to create your own tinted moisturizer?  Mix your concealer with some lotion and rub together!
  • You want to make sure you have the right shade in your favorite concealer. For example, your concealer for your under-eye area should be one shade lighter than your foundation.  But not too light where it looks drastically different.

I did want to hit on when to apply your concealer a little more because it really depends on what type of coverage you like and your skin.

If you have acne, dark circles or a lot you need to conceal, then use concealer first,  However, if you just need to spot conceal certain areas, use foundation first, then spot conceal after.  I do foundation first and then have a little under my nose and a spot on the side of my cheek that I conceal.  So for me it works great.  I find I use less concealer because my foundation covers most of it and evens out my skin tone.

If you’re concerned about your complexion looking too cakey, then you could conceal first and then do foundation. This is a great idea if you have lots to conceal, plus you won’t use as much product as far as foundation goes.

I also recorded a video on how to achieve flawless concealer.  I show you how I apply mine and what I do to avoid creasing and make it last all day. Check out the video here!

Ingredients To Avoid In Your Concealer

As with all beauty products, concealer can also have some ingredients that I would opt to avoid when given the chance. All the brand I share below are clean, but here are a few ingredients to be on the lookout for:

Polyethylene Glycols (PEG’s) – Has been found to be contaminated with 1, 4 dioxane, which is cancer-causing.  Can cause acne, skin irritant.

BHT/BHA– BHT is an antioxidant that helps to stabilize a product and reduce contamination. It is a hormone disruptor. It’s also listed as a human carcinogen and can cause reproductive problems(Source). BHA is also an antioxidant and has been listed as a carcinogen. (Source)

Phthalates– Known carcinogen, endocrine disruptor, cause birth defects and weaken fertility. (Source)

Parabens– Pretty common in most skincare products.  Endocrine disruptor also known as Hormone disruptor(Source).  Has been found in breast cancer tumors(Source), may cause male infertility and early puberty(Source).

Fragrance – Can cause phototoxic reactions and can be photoallergic.  Skin irritants, and has been known as a neuro-toxin(Source).

Hi Suzi, would you recommend Kosas concealer over Skin Twin? I currently have the skin twin and I feel like it’s a bit drying. Looking for something a bit more moisturizing. But I didn’t want to switch unless Kosas was worth it. Thanks!

      Hi Becky,

You definitely picked the right concealer that is more moisturizing. 🙂 Kosas is very moisturizing- a lot dewier overall.
