What is an ideal moisturizer?

At its most basic level, a moisturizer is a preparation (typically a lotion or a cream) that when applied to the skin will prevent or relieve dryness. (1)  Makes sense and seems simple enough. But, when you consider how many different brands and products are out there that have claims of moisturizing your skin, it can get overwhelming.  Plus, there are moisturizers, balms, creams and oils.  All of a sudden preventing and relieving dryness seems a whole lot more complicated.  But, I am going to break it all down so you know exactly what to look for in a daily moisturizer.

Based on an article from the National Institute of Health (2), an ideal moisturizer should:

  • Reduce and prevent further transepidermal water loss (this is when water passes through the different layers of your skin and eventually evaporates)
  • Restore lipid barrier
  • Hypoallergenic, nonsensitizing, fragrance free, noncomedogenic
  • Absorbed immediately, providing immediate hydration
  • Cosmetically acceptable
  • Affordable

Of course I am going to take it a step further as you know I only want top notch ingredients to put on my skin and have absorbed into my body.  I think an ideal moisturizer should have only the best ingredients!

Face Oils vs. Moisturizer

Face oils and moisturizers are different and work differently.  A face oil is going to retain and seal in moisture in your skin while also providing nourishment. You want an oil to have a blend of essential fatty acids (EFA's) or omegas and it obviously doesn't include any water.  Oils also can contain a mix of essential oils that help to balance the skin and provide therapeutic properties.  Oil's work perfectly with our skin’s cutaneous and get to the center of the epidermis.  Many people with oily skin think they should avoid oils- when really the opposite is true.  Using oils helps bring balance to the skin and doesn't clog pores like other moisturizers that contain emulsifiers, waxes, etc.

Moisturizers (lotions or creams) are composed of both oil and water.  This means they not only add hydration to your skin due to the water content, but seal it in with the oil.  The difference between a cream and a lotion is that a cream is heavier and has a higher percentage of oil in it.  Moisturizers do a great job of shielding your skin from the elements and are the perfect product to apply after an oil.  When you choose the correct moisturizer for your skincare routine, it can really up the health of your skin.

Does my skin type matter when choosing a moisturizer?

YES!!!  You want a moisturizer that is going to work with your skin and has ingredients to improve any ‘problem’ areas you may have while also giving you that extra boost of hydration.  Even Mayo Clinic agrees! (3)

More than likely you have a pretty good idea of your skin type.  However, I do have a video you can watch where I share all about skin types and what you need to know.  I also have a quiz you can take HERE.  This quiz will really help you narrow down what skin type you have and I will send you the #1 skin care tip for your skin type too.  To have the most effective skin care routine, you really should be picking out all of your products based on your skin type.  Now, onto my picks for the best moisturizers!

Best Natural Face Moisturizer For Oily Skin

Face Oils-

  • Squalene Facial Oil (Budget Friendly) Squalene has long been touted as having some serious benefits to the skin.  It has anti-aging benefits, as well as anti-inflammatory benefits.  It also helps to reverse the signs of sun damage and is incredibly hydrating and nourishing to the skin.  The best part?  It's tolerated by every skin type!  Yes, if you have oily skin, this works for you, if you have dry skin, sensitive skin, inflamed skin- this is for you too.  That's what makes this oil so special and unique.  Literally the only ingredient in this oil is squalene oil- no other additives.  One of the reasons why I love this ingredient so much!  Not only is it a powerhouse for the skin but it can be used by so many skin types.  Squalene can be derived from sharks but the humane method of extraction is from olives.  No sharks involved.  This is how Indie Lee's Squalene Oil is extracted as well.  I keep this oil on hand because at times my skin can be irritated or get inflamed from trying out all the beauty products.  I'm a beauty blogger at heart but sometimes my skin just needs simple and a break.  That's where squalene oil comes in.  It literally calms my skin and helps relieve inflammation.  I love knowing that I'm not applying 10 different ingredients on my skin but just one!  Recently I went through a season where I was testing out so many skincare products my skin started to flare up a little.  I quickly stopped using everything and switched to just this squalene oil and noticed a difference immediately!  This is incredibly nourishing and hydrating to the skin too.  I don't even need a cream after applying this.  If you or someone you know suffers from inflamed skin or sensitive skin and even dry skin- try this!  I has no smell, no essential oils- just pure squalene oil.  I also love that it has a comedogenic rating of 0-1- which is nonexistent! Comedogenic ingredients are ingredients that can clog pores, cause blackheads and ultimately worsen acne or trigger it. Get it here.

I had heard rave reviews about this Blemish Balm and finally got my hands on some!  This is a lightweight moisturizer perfect for oily and acne skin types.  It helps to even the skin tone and balance it through 3 oils, juniper, thyme, and tea tree.  Plus, it has their signature seaweed which adds a dose of nutrients to it.  The combination provides a soothing and balancing effect to the skin, without the added shine you might get from other moisturizers.  I even gave this to my sister who has an oily complexion and she's loved it!  If you have oily, combination skin this is for you. Best Natural Face Moisturizer For Dry Skin

Face Oils-

The Maqui Berry is a highly potent anti-inflammatory berry that not only soothes acne, but also rosacea, and hyper-pigmentation. Now you not only get a super dose of antioxidants with the Maqui Berry, but also the same base of organic baobab, that eases redness, and smooths skin texture.  This mighty fruit is sourced from Chile, where the Mapuche Indians praise it for it's anti-inflammatory benefits.

I LOVE the scent!  It is a subtle mix of citrus and vanilla.  I almost want to wear it as a perfume!  It isn't overwhelming.  It feels heavier like you would expect for a nourishing oil but not greasy in any way.  The oil literally sinks right into your skin.  Hydrating it and leaving behind a silky smooth complexion when you touch your face. I love how it makes my skin feel.  I not only wear this at night, but also in the morning before my makeup application.  The formula is so good!  On the bottle it says it helps improve lackluster skin- I couldn't think of a better term than that!  It really makes skin shine from within and brings it back to life.  If you have dry skin like me- you'll love this.  Get it here.

This is actually one of the very first organic oils I ever bought when transitioning to natural beauty over 10 years ago.  It isn’t expensive yet it does the job and does it well.  With one singular oil, it isn't complicated, but a simple oil that leaves your skin feeling hydrated and not greasy.  Jojoba oil is such a great oil to use on the skin too, as it’s the closest oil to what your skin naturally produces.  What makes this jojoba oil great too is it’s cold pressed, so they’re not using heat to extract it, so the oil is left intact.  Better yet you can get it from Amazon for a great price!  Get it here.

Face Creams/Lotions-

This has been the perfect moisturizer to add on top of my oils in the morning and at night for a little extra hydration.  I even used this when we were up in the mountains sledding for the day and it kept my skin feeling so hydrated and protected.  Not only does this cream moisturize but also provide great anti-aging benefits with it’s naturally rich antioxidants.  It seeps into my skin so well, and doesn’t feel greasy.  My hubs has been stealing this from me too-that means it’s good people!  He can be pickier than me at times.  What’s even better is the price tag on this cream, $48!  A steal for a green beauty cream that works and is full of skincare actives! Check it out here!

This cream is what skincare dreams are made of- no joke!  Yes, it is the best antiaging cream I've found in natural skincare.  Move over LaMer.  There's a new skin cream in town and it doesn't contain the toxic ingredients!  I have tried hundreds of natural skin creams in my day, yes as a clean beauty blogger my shelves are filled with product, after product.  This one is in a league of it's own.  I just dare you to try it and tell me otherwise.  The consistency is like softest most decadent cream.  It literally melts into the skin and creates skin that feels so completely perfect from hydration to overall smoothness and radiance.  My skin LOVES it.  Get it here.

Best Natural Face Moisturizer For Mature Skin

Face Oils-

I was introduced to Beuti Skincare a couple months back and didn’t think much until I started to use their Beauty Sleep Elixir Oil product and was wowed. The Sleep Elixir feels rich on the skin but not overly oily.  It sinks right into my complexion and leaves it feeling dewy and with a glow.  I’ve never read so many rave reviews about an oil- for real!  It has over 305 on Credo Beauty’s website.  It’s definitely a fan favorite.  I apply it at night after cleansing and toning and in the morning after cleansing and toning.  It’s made especially for sensitive skin tooThen I did a deep dive into the brand to discover more and had to share an official Beuti Skincare review with you.  I then learned that Princess Kate loves the Beauty Sleep Elixir too- not surprised!  Get it here.

This is Maya Chia's newest product.  I've been using it for 3 weeks.  I always hesitate to talk about a skincare product right away because I like to give it time.  If it's one thing I tell people it's that skincare products take time!  Yes, you can know if you like something as far as texture or feel but serums and oils really take a while to see results.  That being said I have been using this for a bit and definitely can speak to the overall experience of it.  It contains the plant retinol bakuchiol which I've used before in other skincare products and it also contains moth bean extract- another plant derived retinol.  But it also contains an advanced retinol using an encapsulated Retinol.  This is a derivative of Vitamin A without BHT.  BHT has been shown to cause live damage in rats even in small amounts.  Plus, the supply chain with BHT is very unstable.  Besides the powerful retinols it also contains Vitamin C and Vitamin E.  These brighten the skin and help fade hyperpigmentation.  You're also going to get some serious hydration from this serum with Buriti oil, and chia seed oil. I've only been using this for a bit because they advise not to use while pregnant or breastfeeding.  I've heard from other bloggers how amazing it is as well. I'll be sure to test it when I'm done nursing. Get the serum here!

This cream is packed with superfood ingredients and high tech green ingredients that deliver the nutrients right to the skin.  Not only does it help with hydration but also fine lines, and skin tone.  It really helps to plump up the skin and keep moisture levels intact for the whole day.  I love that it's made by hand in small batches in England to ensure the ingredients stay intact and are active when they reach you.  Plus, it's budget friendly!  This works great at night for extra hydration or even in the morning before makeup.  Get it here.

Best Natural Face Moisturizer For Normal/Combination

Face Oils-

Where do I start with this oil?  Gahh…I really love it.  It's their number 1 product and for good reason.  It seeps right into your skin, leaves behind no greasy residue, and makes your skin feel hydrated throughout the day and night.  Besides being highly hydrating it also helps smooth wrinkles, shrink large pores and fight free radical damage.  I love the scent as well.  Not heavy at all, but with notes of frankincense, neroli, rose and jasmine.  Many people wonder what makes this oil so special, here's a blurb from TB on their website that explains it so well-

When therapeutic oils are applied to the skin without the interference of waxes, they can be absorbed directly into the top layers of the epidermis, where they instantly go to work to improve lipid barrier function. By replenishing the oils you’ve lost due to natural attrition and exposure, you enable your skin to properly do its job: hold moisture in and keep the elements, like sun and wind, out. -True Botanicals

This oil had me at first swipe!  I remember looking at my skin two weeks into using this and wondering why my skin looked so good?  I hadn’t changed anything except added in this oil.  I’m telling you it’s GOOD!  My skin looked brighter, more even and less red.  What’s in this little magic bottle?  So much goodness.  Date extract is one ingredient that has been known to increase brightness, hydration, while also decreasing hyperpigmentation, and redness.  It also has a stable form of Vitamin C (10%) which has been known to be great for even the most sensitive skin types.  Carrot Root which has been shown to also add brightness.  I can’t forget to mention cranberry seed oil which has been known to be one of the most abundant sources of polyphenols, which helps with firmness and elasticity.  I also love that it has squalene, a non-comedogenic oil that has been known to not only protect the skin but also help minimize fine lines and absorb into the skin quickly.  It feels so velvety on your skin and sinks in, no greasy residue but a smooth finish is left behind.  Get it here.

I love that is a budget friendly option that works!  Often you find budget friendly options but they aren't as good.  This moisturizer really delivers!  Plus, it's easy to find- even Target carries it.  It feels hydrating enough, but not overly.  It's a great moisturizer for the daytime or before applying your makeup.  I love that my skin doesn't feel heavy after applying it, yet still nourished enough where it's not needing more moisture.  It has hyaluronic acid and jojoba which help to mimic the skin's natural moisture to bring hydration that lasts. This oil has a rating of 1 on the comedogenic scale. Rosehip seed oil is great for so many things, from hydrating skin to calming inflammation.  I love that this oil only has 3 ingredients.  It's really known for it's healing properties and it's rich Omega 3, 6, 7 & 9 plus antioxidant Carotenoids content.  Great for sensitive skin that is dry and inflamed. This is also budget friendly oil! Grab it here!

I love this budget friendly option for sensitive skin.  It's completely fragrance free, which is often hard to find for a moisturizer- even in natural beauty.  It has a few simple, pure ingredients that really deliver moisture to the skin without all the extras.  One of my favorite ingredients you've heard me talk about in this post is squalene- and it's in this Mother Dirt Moisturizer.  I love that Mother Dirt is all about the skin's microbiome.  Really helping to support it, knowing that when it's supported it will function properly.  That's why they are very specific about the ingredients they choose for their formulas.  Making sure they help to support the overall skin barrier and not strip it.  This is great in the morning before makeup or in the evening too.  Get it here.
