What is an ideal moisturizer?
At its most basic level, a moisturizer is a preparation (typically a lotion or a cream) that when applied to the skin will prevent or relieve dryness.
Makes sense and seems simple enough. But, when you consider how many different brands and products are out there that have claims of moisturizing your skin, it can get overwhelming. Plus, there are moisturizers, balms, creams and oils. All of a sudden preventing and relieving dryness seems a whole lot more complicated. But, I am going to break it all down so you know exactly what to look for in a daily moisturizer.
Based on an article from the National Institute of Health, an ideal moisturizer should:
- Reduce and prevent further transepidermal water loss (this is when water passes through the different layers of your skin and eventually evaporates)
- Restore lipid barrier
- Hypoallergenic, nonsensitizing, fragrance free, noncomedogenic
- Absorb immediately, providing immediate hydration
- Cosmetically acceptable
- Affordable
Of course I am going to take it a step further as you know I only want top notch ingredients to put on my skin and have absorbed into my body. I think an ideal moisturizer should have only the best natural ingredients too!

Face Oils vs. Moisturizer
Face oils and moisturizers are different and work differently. A face oil is going to retain and seal in moisture in your skin since it’s a occlusive while also providing nourishment. You want an oil to have a blend of essential fatty acids (EFA’s) or omegas and it obviously doesn’t include any water. Oils also can contain a mix of essential oils that help to balance the skin and provide therapeutic properties.
Oil’s work perfectly with our skin’s cutaneous and get to the center of the epidermis. Many people with oily or acne-prone skin think they should avoid oils- when really the opposite is true. Using oils helps bring balance to the skin and doesn’t clog pores like other moisturizers that contain emulsifiers, waxes, etc.
Moisturizers (lotions or creams), in comparison, are composed of both oil and water. This means they not only add hydration to your skin due to the water content, but seal it in with the oil. The difference between a cream and a lotion is that a cream is heavier and has a higher percentage of oil in it and moisturizers are humectants and draw moisture to the skin.
Oils do a great job of shielding your skin from the elements and are the perfect product to apply after a moisturizer. Applying your moisturizer first is best before an oil so your skin can really soak it up, then apply your oil to seal in the moisture. When you choose the correct moisturizer for your skincare routine, it can really up the health of your skin.

Does my skin type matter when choosing a moisturizer?
YES!!! You want a moisturizer that is going to work with your skin and has ingredients to improve any ‘problem’ areas you may have while also giving you that extra boost of hydration. Even Mayo Clinic agrees!
More than likely you have a pretty good idea of your skin type. However, I do have a video you can watch where I share all about skin types and what you need to know. I also have a quiz you can take HERE. This quiz will really help you narrow down what skin type you have and I will send you the #1 skin care tip for your skin type too. To have the most effective skin care routine, you really should be picking out all of your products based on your skin type. Now, onto my picks for the best natural face moisturizers!

How can I hydrate my skin without a moisturizer?
Lifestyle choices can definitely make a difference in your skin! Here are a few of my top tips that will help your skin from getting dried out:
- Take an Omega 3 supplement. This can literally hydrate your skin from the inside out.
- Drink water. If your body is dehydrated it’s going to show on your skin as well. Make sure you’re drinking half your body weight in water. Also, make sure you’re adding a little salt to your water so you actually retain it or get some electrolytes.
- Get a humidifier. Put one in your room to help combat dry skin. Especially great to run at night while you’re sleeping. This helps to bring moisture to the skin.
- Keep showers short. Don’t take long showers as this can strip away your skin’s moisture. Use more lukewarm water and keep your showering time to 5 minutes.
- Steer clear of harsh cleansers. Stick with oil or cream cleansers. These are going to hydrate your skin versus strip it.

How I can hydrate my face overnight?
A moisture mask is going to be your best bet. And True Botanicals has one of my favorites. Their Moisture Lock Overnight Mask really offers some serious hydration. You cleanse your skin and apply your products as you would normally and then you apply the mask. Instead of rinsing it off you sleep in it! When you wake up your skin is silky smooth and moisturized. Like a big gulp of water for your skin. I put down a hand towel on my pillow so the product didn’t get on my pillow case. But it really does soak in to the skin so well you hardly notice anything. I can’t think of a better product for your skin in the dry winter months! It literally nourishes the skin so well. I notices minimized redness too. Get your Moisture Lock Mask here!
