What kind of mattress is best for bunk beds?

Typically you aren’t going to use a standard size mattress for bunk beds. When shopping you may see phrases like ‘thin’ or ‘low-profile mattress.’ It is important to know that these are not the same. A true low-profile mattress is a mattress that measures 2 to 5 inches in height. These are usually used for trundle beds, some bunk beds, futons, floor mattresses, etc.

A thin mattress is one that measures between 5 and 8 inches. And a thin twin size mattress was exactly what I was needing for the bunk beds that we got my girls!

What is a thin mattress typically used for?

Typically a thin (or sometimes referred to as slim) mattress is most ideal for children. They are lighter in weight and even with the lower height of the mattress appropriate support is still provided. An adult or older child might be more likely to have pressure points or discomfort on a thin mattress. But, smaller adults and those with limited mobility may also benefit from a thinner mattress while still getting the support they need, it just really depends on their body type and support needs. As I mentioned, the bunk bed frame we purchased had the requirement of thin mattresses for both the top and bottom bunk bed.

Top 7 Benefits of Buying an Organic Bunk Bed Mattress From My Green Mattress

  1. Organic Mattress – It’s an organic mattress that is made with soft, Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified organic cotton and GOTS certified organic wool. There is also Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) certified organic and OEKO-TEX certified Dunlop latex.
  2. Dust mite, mold and mildew resistant – The GOLS certified latex is naturally resistant to these microbes because it is naturally breathable and doesn’t retain moisture.
  3. No Flame Retardants – The great thing about wool is that it is naturally flame resistant, it doesn’t easily burn and if it does burn the flame is self extinguishing. All with no chemicals! The wool is what allows there to be no flame retardants.
  4. Perfect Height for the Bunk Bed Frame – Even allowing a little extra room for my daughter sleeping on the top bunk.
  5. Good support and comfort for my girls
  6. Durable and Long Lasting – 20 year warranty
  7. Great Price Point Overall – The Kiwi Thin is $70 less than the regular Kiwi. If you are purchasing for bunk beds and need 2 new mattresses, that will save you almost $150 off already budget friendly organic mattresses!

Do I need different sheets for a thin mattress?

No, you don’t need different sheets for a twin bunk bed mattress in my opinion. You may have some extra sheet build up but that’s all. It’s up to you whether you want to get new sheets or stick with what you have. If you have a low-profile mattress, on the other hand, then you may want to get different sheets as those can be quite a bit thinner than standard mattresses so your sheets are going to have a fair amount of extra fabric.

I use The Company Store Organic Percale Twin Sheets for my kid’s mattresses and they work great. They are soft even though they’re percale and I love knowing that they aren’t doused in chemicals. They come in a variety of fun prints for kids and also plain colors as well. We have the color petal pink for the girls!  Check them out here.

Best Organic Bunk Bed Mattress Brand: My Green Mattress Kiwi Bunk Bed Mattress

The My Green Mattress Kiwi Bunk Bed Mattress is my top pick for the best organic bunk bed mattress brand. They really hit all the marks when it comes to a mattress for standard bunk beds. First, they are organic, so you don’t have to worry about added chemicals in your mattress. Second, they are budget-friendly, so you aren’t going to spend an arm and a leg on a mattress! Sounds like a win/win to me.

It is also a hybrid mattress. This means it has a pocketed coil innerspring along with a layer of GOLS organic and OEKO-TEX certified Dunlop latex. Perfect for support and comfort!

If you aren’t familiar with My Green Mattress, allow me to introduce you.

My Green Mattress avoids the following in their mattresses:

  • NO Flame Retardants or Flame Retardant Barriers
  • NO Memory Foam or other forms of Polyurethane Foam
  • NO Soybean or Biobased Foam (polyurethane foam with soybean oil mixed in)
  • NO Harmful Glues or Adhesives
  • NO GMO Cotton or other GMO fibers
When you consider that we sleep ⅓ of our lives, not having toxins in our mattresses becomes so much more important!

I love that My Green Mattress is a family owned business. Tim, the founder, created the mattress because his daughter Emily suffered from eczema and environmental allergies. Tim wanted a mattress that was pure and healthy for his children. Therefore My Green Mattress was born. An honest American-owned company in Illinois. They handcraft all the mattresses in their factory there. They also offer a 365 day sleep trial (120 day for mattresses purchased before March 1, 2023) which really was the icing on the cake for me. Many companies don’t stand by their mattresses like that. You literally get to try your new mattress out for a year and if you don’t like it during the trial you can return it. I don’t know anyone else willing to make sure that the money spent on an organic mattress can be insured.

They also offer free shipping to the contiguous United States through FedEx, so you don’t have to worry about that being added to the price.

You can check out the “10 Things To Know Before Buying A New Mattress” post. This helped to guide me when choosing what type of mattress I really wanted. From what size of mattress depending on your type of bed, to the firmness and even what is the right mattress for those that suffer from allergies. My Green Mattress covers it all.

Gurl Gone Green’s Review of the Kiwi Bunk Bed Mattress

When searching for the best twin mattresses for our girls’ bunk beds I knew that My Green Mattress was not just going to be just a good choice, but rather would offer the best mattresses out there.

The dimensions of our bunk bed frame are 80” L x 58” W x 50” H – basically, it’s a standard twin over twin solid wood bunk bed. I will admit I did have a couple of safety concerns when I was shopping and going through the different types of bunk bed frames. The frame we chose has the lower bunk sitting just 2 inches off the floor, which gives the person on the top bed more open space to sit up in their bed, which was something that I wanted to make sure of. There are of course guard rails on the top bunk for safety purposes. This makes these a great choice for young children and those with more limited space.

Here is the bunk bed we got for my girls.

My Green Mattress Kiwi Bunk Bed Mattress is the perfect dimensions for the bunk bed frame – it’s a twin-size mattress and the dimensions are 38in X 75in X 8in. Giving some room at the top of the bunk for added safety for my oldest. It also gives a little extra room overall with the frame and the mattress when putting sheets and comforters on.

My Green Mattress tweaked their award-winning Kiwi Mattress (which measures 9.5 inches high) to accommodate the 8-inch requirement for most bunk beds. It’s a firm supportive mattress overall. It definitely feels so good laying on, and my kids both sleep soundly on them. I love knowing that they are sleeping on an organic mattress that is made with soft, GOTS certified organic cotton and GOTS certified organic wool.

The wool acts as a flame retardant, instead of the chemical flame retardants that are found in conventional mattresses.

It also seems very durable, a mattress they will have for years and years to come. Also, there was no weird smell to the mattress when we removed it from the packaging. It was so easy to unbox! I love the simplicity and My Green Mattress offers that.

I can’t recommend a Kiwi Bunk Bed Mattress enough. As I mentioned earlier, it comes when an affordable price tag for an organic mattress, the quality is superb and the overall dimensions fit a bunk bed perfectly. It hits all the marks and is truly the best bunk bed mattress.

I want to buy this bunk mattress for my son’s bed. I keep reading reviews about a bad odor, maybe farm like smell? Are you still pleased with the purchase? Thanks!

      Hi!

I am! It doesn’t smell bad in my opinion, just like something that’s been manufactured. But not a farm smell to me. The smell dissipates quickly too.

HI. I am thinking of buying a My Green Mattress Kiwi for my kids’ bunk beds, but it says the space between the slats cant be more than 3.5″, and all the beds I’m looking at have spaces closer to 9″. Did you have to modify the bunk bed frame to support it, or did it work OK with the wider spaced slats?
    thank you!

      Hi Emma,

No we did not have to modify it at all. It’s worked out great! I even asked my hubs before we got it and he said it’s fine. My daughter is 40lbs that sleeps on top, so it isn’t like it has to support a ton of weight.
