A mattress is a big investment and that's why I am sharing my favorite organic mattress brands that I have tested and own. To make it even better, all of these brands are American made!

Finding a great mattress can literally make or break what kind of night’s sleep you get. Whether it be comfort, size, quality or even type of support, you want to make sure you find the best quality mattress that provides the support you need. And with all the mattress companies out there it can be a lot to weed through. That’s why I am sharing the best American-made mattresses that use only the highest quality mattress materials. Plus, everything you need to know when choosing your mattress!

Factors to Consider Before Buying a New Mattress

There are actually a lot of details to consider when picking out a mattress. And when you consider that finding the right mattress can truly help you get a good night’s sleep, it really makes you want to make the right choice! Here are some of the most important details to consider:

What type of support does the mattress provide?

Mattresses can vary in their construction quite a bit. Some will have a set of metal coil springs (which can be either connected or individually wrapped ). Latex is another material used to provide support in a mattress. A hybrid mattress that will combine multiple types of construction (for example a metal coil system combined with a comfort layer of latex). There are a few other options that I personally would stay away from. Memory foam mattresses, for example, are a popular choice however they come with toxic chemicals, which can vary from one brand to another. I will hit on this more below.

You also want to consider what sleep position you most use (side, back or stomach) and your body type when choosing the firmness level of your mattress. Smaller sizes typically prefer a soft or medium firmness while a larger size is more likely to prefer firmer support. When you add a person’s sleep position to this it starts to get a little more complicated. A side sleeper isn’t going to want too firm of a mattress or it will put too much pressure on the shoulders and the hips, whereas a back or stomach sleeper will want a higher firmness level. Check out the Sleep Foundation’s guide to Mattress Firmness here for a little extra help in determining what firmness level is best for you!

Size

This can be determined by what you prefer, the size of the space you have available or even a bed frame you are needing a mattress for. Sizes can range from a Crib Mattress to a Cali King with all sorts of specifications in between!

What is the mattress made of?

This can be a deciding factor for many, myself included! I only want the best materials used on my family’s mattresses. Unfortunately, not all brands are choosing to use the best materials. For instance, memory foam is a very popular choice.

However, companies usually prefer not to divulge the exact ingredients they use to make their memory foam, as these blends are considered a trade secret.

Transparency is so important to me when making such a big purchase. And, it needs to be considered that memory foam is made from polyurethane (making it HIGHLY flammable) and historically has been known to have contained harmful substances, including:

  • Methylbenzene (AKA toluene): Rapid inhalation of high concentrations of toluene can cause severe neurological complications.
  • Formaldehyde: A possible byproduct of the manufacturing process. Even at low levels, breathing in formaldehyde can cause eye, nose, and throat irritation. At higher concentrations, formaldehyde exposure can lead to skin rashes, shortness of breath, wheezing, and changes in lung function. A probable human carcinogen.
  • Flame Retardants: With the polyurethane foam being highly flammable it is a requirement that flame retardants be used. Health effects of flame retardants include: endocrine and thyroid disruption, impacts to the immune system, reproductive toxicity, cancer, adverse effects on fetal and child development, and neurologic function. And the worst part, children are the most vulnerable!

I like to look for materials like the following in my high-quality mattresses:

  • Organic Cotton
  • Organic Wool
  • Organic Latex
  • No Flame Retardants are needed due to the natural materials. Wool is naturally flame resistant, it doesn’t easily burn and if it does burn the flame is self-extinguishing. All with no chemicals! The wool is what allows there to be no flame retardants.

I just feel so good about purchasing a USA-made mattress made from materials that I know exactly what they are when I read them!

Warranty

Let’s face it, mattresses are a big investment. And when you consider that you are going to have the same mattress for years to come, you want to make sure you get the one that will work for you. That’s why you want to purchase from a brand that has a warranty and even ‘trial period’ to make sure you love your new mattress!

Price

Mattress prices can vary immensely, although there are brands that do come with more affordable prices and you will still get a quality product. You want to set your budget and stick to it. But do take into consideration that you will have your new mattress for years and years to come so it is truly an investment. Good sleep is definitely on the verge of priceless!

4 Reasons to Buy American Made Mattresses

An American-made bed is important to many consumers for a variety of reasons. A few reasons that really stick out to me include:

  • You are supporting companies that are supplying jobs to American workers, which is great for our economy. The more companies that outsource to other countries, the less work there is for Americans!
  • You are ensuring that fair wages are being paid and labor laws followed thanks to the United States Labor Laws. When labor is outsourced to other countries there is no guarantee any of these laws are being followed. With your American made products you are saying no thanks to child labor and extremely low wages while also supporting better safety standards.
  • You will be getting a higher quality product. And, yes, this can mean a higher price tag. But, we get what we pay for. And when getting a high-quality product that means the life of the product will be increased, which is great for the environment. When it comes to a large item like a mattress, no one wants to be replacing it constantly.
  • American-made is better for the environment. Think about how far a product needs to travel to get to you if it is coming from, for example, China. No matter how it gets to you, the carbon emissions are much higher than if you would have purchased a similar product made in the U.S. Manufacturing processes at an American Company are also more likely to be environmentally friendly since they have state and federal environmental regulations to follow.

3 Best American Made Mattress Brands

I am lucky enough to own and use multiple brands that have USA-made mattresses. From mine and my husband’s king size bed, to my girls’ bunk bed mattress to the organic crib mattress that has lasted through all four of my babies, I am sharing what I love about these brands and why they make the best mattresses.

Naturepedic has thought of every detail when creating their mattresses.

What I Love About Naturepedic

I was first introduced to Naturepedic over 9 years ago when I was searching for an organic mattress for my baby girl. At the time I hadn’t started to detox my own bedroom yet and was learning all about the toxic load conventional mattresses can bring. I ended up choosing their organic crib mattress for our daughter and have loved it. Here is my full review of the Naturepedic Organic Crib Mattress that has lasted through all 4 of my babies!

When I’m searching for a mattress I want to make sure it’s certified organic first and foremost. Then I know it’s met third-party testing. Other 3rd party certifications to look for are: Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), and GREENGUARD. Naturepedic meets all these certifications, plus so many more such as Formaldehyde Free Verified, OCS100 Organic Content Standard, Non-GMO verified, and Made Safe Verified.

Since getting the organic crib mattress we were so happy with it we have also gotten their EOS Classic King size mattress for my husband and I and a 2-in-1 organic kid’s twin size mattress for my little guy. When we received the EOS Classic King Size Naturepedic mattress it came in several boxes. I know sounds interesting to put the mattress together huh? But it was super easy.

The first thing my hubs and I noticed about the Naturepedic mattress was how much cooler it makes us feel – which is an added bonus for hot sleepers like my husband. It also feels supportive but not hard or too firm. I also like how breathable everything feels. I truly look forward to going to bed each night! I love knowing we aren’t breathing in harmful fumes when we’re sleeping and our body isn’t absorbing toxic chemicals either. It did have a faint smell when we first opened it. But it wasn’t a chemical smell just a subtle unboxing smell in my opinion. Once it was out for a day I didn’t smell anything. Check out my full Naturepedic Review where I even share a time-lapse of my hubs setting up the mattress.

The Twin size 2-in-1 kid’s mattress was a hit for my little guy as well. It didn’t have a strong smell at all and was easy to set up, which I really liked. It fits great in a toddler bed or regular size twin bed frame. He’s slept great on it too!

Love my girls’ new Kiwi Bunk Bed Mattresses from My Green Mattress.

What I Love About My Green Mattress

I have had many people ask me if I know of a budget-friendly clean mattress. Well, I searched and found My Green Mattress.  It is not only squeaky clean when it comes to its ingredients and sourcing but also easy on the wallet!  Basically, I struck gold.

My Green Mattress has all the 3rd party certifications you want to see when searching for an organic mattress.  They are Greenguard Gold Certified, Global Organic Latex Standard(GOLS), and Global Organic Textile Standard(GOTS) certified.  On top of that, being an American Made mattress company means that the mattresses are made in an environmentally and socially responsible way.

What is really neat is that having the GOTS and GOLS factory certifications means you can literally trace all materials back to the original farms and lots where they were grown.  My Green Mattress is consistently audited to ensure that they are complying with the certification standards.  I love knowing that My Green Mattress not only has these certifications but that they are routinely inspected.  It gives me peace of mind as I’m sleeping at night.

I love that My Green Mattress is a family owned business.  Tim, the founder, created the mattress because his daughter Emily suffered from eczema and environmental allergies.  Tim wanted a mattress that was pure and healthy for his children.  Therefore My Green Mattress was birthed.

After looking at their mattresses I chose the Natural Escape Mattress.  I wanted something that would be more on the soft side and really offer the support I was looking for.  Natural Escape fit all my requirements.  Plus, after talking with My Green Mattress it was their most luxurious mattress they offered.  When we got the mattress it was boxed tightly in plastic wrap.  Setting it up was a cinch!  My husband did it all.

It had an earthy straw like smell when it came out of the box but we just aired it out for a couple days and it went away.  It wasn’t repulsive at all, just like it had come out of the factory.

So how does it feel when sleeping on it?  As my husband says- it’s super comfortable!  The mattress actually came at the perfect time since I just had my third baby.  My hubs had been sleeping on the couch off and on so he wouldn’t wake up when SJ woke up in the middle of the night.  So instead of the couch he started to sleep on the new mattress.  I asked him for his thoughts.  He said not only is it super comfortable but his back has never hurt when sleeping on it, it keeps him cool at night and he never wakes up.  Now if you know my husband then this is saying a lot.  He gets hot very easily and wakes up often when he is.

I second his sentiments.  It feels very comfortable, I feel like my whole body is supported at night and that I get a deep sleep.  I was concerned it might be too firm but it isn’t at all.  I’ve heard great things about their toppers and initially thought about getting one as well but really I don’t think I even need one.  Maybe down the road but it feels so nice without it.  I would recommend trying it out first without it and then seeing if you need it once you sleep on it for several nights.  Check out my full My Green Mattress Review here!

I also recently got their twin size bunk bed mattresses for my daughters and have a full review on them here.
