EWG Sunscreen Picks

EWG Sunscreen Picks

Sharing the full EWG Sunscreen picks list with you! I get asked a lot about sunscreens and specifically what are EWG approved sunscreens.  I thought what better time share about natural sunscreens than at the start of the spring and summer season.  Also, in case you are wondering, the sun care market isn't going anywhere!

The U.S. sun care market size was estimated at USD 1.95 billion in 2016 (1).

Suzi(Gurl Gone Green) is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to amazon.com.

For those who don't know what EWG is allow me to introduce you.  The EWG is a nonprofit organization that was formed in 1993. They specialize in research, and advocacy when it comes to toxic chemicals, drinking water pollutants, corporate accountability, and agricultural subsidies.  It's an organization that exists to help empower people with knowledge to make an informed decision when it comes to the food they're consuming and the products they use in their home and on themselves. I couldn't love what they stand for anymore!  They really are challenging the status quo and helping the consumer to think twice about conventional products and methods.

Every year the EWG sunscreen picks guide comes out where they vet and share safe sunscreen options.  They list them in categories, ranging from beach and sport sunscreens, kid's options, best tinted moisturizers with SPF, and best lip balms with SPF.  This is a great resource to help see what sunscreens are safe and which are not.  The Sunscreen guide for 2021 has yet to be released.

After a 34-year process of reviewing sunscreen safety and efficacy, the Food and Drug Administration has not yet finalized rules on sunscreen ingredient safety and product effectiveness(2).

If you're not familiar with EWG, they have a category on their website called Skin Deep.  It rates products on a scale of 1-10, 1 being the best and 10 being the worst. You can enter in a product name and it will calculate if it's safe or not based on certain criteria.  They also list why it might get a higher score.  For example, you can type in a certain brand of sunscreen and get scoring on it, seeing why it might rank higher or lower depending upon ingredients.  This is really helpful in learning more about which ingredients are harmful and which are safe.

I want to explain how the EWG rates their sunscreens and the criteria it goes off of.  I get a lot of questions asking about their specific scoring, so I thought I would break it down for you. They first rate it on a scale of 1-10.  Again, 1 being the best and 10 being the worst. It then rates each sunscreen based on 5 categories.

  • Health Hazards
  • UVB Protection
  • UVA Protection
  • The ratio of UVA absorbance to SPF
  • How long lasting the sunscreen is

I applaud the EWG for all the work it's done in creating a system of checks and balances that the consumer can use.  I do think the EWG is a reliable source for vetting products.  It helps to inform and educate consumers on what ingredients are and common ones to avoid.  It's obviously not a fail proof system, but overall I think it's a great place to start when you are searching for the safety of a particular product.

I'm going to share some EWG sunscreens picks that have been approved by them and what some of the healthiest sunscreens are in 2021.  I'll also be sharing the best kid's water sunscreens, and what the sunscreens rate on the EWG.  Plus, sharing my top 5 sunscreens that are safe and effective and even some that are budget friendly!  But before I spill all the details on my favorites I need to share what the benefits of clean sunscreens are.

Sunscreen Tip: Apply enough sunscreen to cover all skin that clothing will not cover. Most adults need about 1 ounce — or enough to fill a shot glass — to fully cover their body (3).

Can’t you just feel it in the air…spring and summer are so close!  With summer comes lots of time spent outside, which equals lots of sun exposure.  I love the sun, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realized the importance of what a good sunscreen can do.  Not only for blocking harmful rays, but also for anti-aging benefits.  Since a lot of people don’t know the difference between chemical sunscreens and natural ones, I’m going to break it down.  Check yourself into sunscreen school…

In order to share the benefits of clean sunscreen, we first have to dive into the harmful affects of chemical sunscreen. Chemical sunscreens contain these big long words.  They can have one or a combination of these six ingredients: oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate.  Instead of blocking the suns rays, like natural sunscreens do, they absorb the rays, and turn them into heat, which are then transferred from skin to the air.  These chemicals are known hormone disruptors (4).  The scary fact about these chemicals is the high absorption rate, compared to other ingredients(5).  Hormone disruptors with high absorption rates is not something you want coupled together.  Chemical sunscreens can also produce free radicals, which cause skin damage, irritation and aging.  Can you say NO THANK YOU!  Plus, they damage the sea and all it's creatures and plants(6).

Coral bleaching (i.e., the release of coral symbiotic zooxanthellae) has negative impacts on biodiversity and functioning of reef ecosystems and their production of goods and services (8).

So what’s the alternative??  Clean sunscreens!  These sunscreens are also known as physical or mineral sunscreens.  These sunscreens either use titanium dioxide, zinc oxide or a combination of both.  They are natural minerals that are ground up.  The main benefits of clean sunscreens are the minerals reflect the sun’s rays instead of absorb them, and they offer broad spectrum protection.  Not only that, but they start working the moment you apply them to your skin, unlike chemical sunscreens where you have to wait 20 minutes.  Who wants to wait anyways?!  Plus, these aren’t going to irritate your skin compared to chemical sunscreens and they won't hurt the ocean or reef like chemical sunscreens.

Now that you know all the details on what makes clean sunscreen better compared to chemical sunscreen, let's dive into my top picks for healthiest sunscreen options that are also EWG sunscreen picks as well!

Here are a couple terms to look for when searching for natural mineral sunscreens and what they mean:

  • UVB/UVA- There are many rays present in sunlight but the most harmful are UV rays- ultraviolet rays. The two rays that reach the earth's surface are, UVB and UVA.  UVB rays are the rays that cause sunburn and can cause skin cancer. UVA rays also can contribute to skin cancer and penetrate the skin even further causing skin aging.  There are many more UVA rays in sunlight than UVB.  It's important to block both UVB and UVA rays.  Chemical sunscreen typically only block UVB, while mineral sunscreen blocks UVB and UVA.  When a sunscreen blocks both UVB and UVA it is called broad spectrum.
  • Broad Spectrum- This indicates that a sunscreen blocks both UVB and UVA rays.
  • Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide- These are what you want to look for when searching for a natural mineral based sunscreen, versus a chemical sunscreen.  These both are naturally occurring minerals.  When they are used in sunscreen, they block the sun's rays from being absorbed into your skin. The UV rays bounce off of your skin when you have either mineral applied.
  • Water Resistant- When you see the words water resistant on a label it means that the sunscreen is effective for either 40 minutes or 80 minutes depending on what the label states.  That means you will need to reapply the sunscreen after the 40 or 80 minutes to make sure it is still effective.  Look for this label if you're going to be in the water or excessively sweating(9).
  • SPF- It is recommended to use an SPF of 30 at minimum.  SPF 15 blocks 93% of rays studies show, while SPF 30 blocks 97% of rays.  You can go up in SPF after 30 however and reach the maximum benefit of sun blocking.  Studies have shown the higher SPF you use the greater overall skin protection you will have (6).
  • Rubs in Clear- If you don't see “rubs in clear” on a label of mineral sunscreen, be mindful that the product will be a white hue on your skin.  However, if you do want it to rub in clear, make sure and get a sunscreen that says rubs in clear.
  • Non-nano- This term has been popping up all over on sunscreen labels.  When a product is nano-sized it means that they have formulated it so small that it can easily be rubbed into the skin and not be seen.  Since the issue often with mineral sunscreens is the white hue it casts on the skin more companies have been creating nano-sized particles so it absorbs clear.  Some concern has risen that nano-sized particles can seep past the skin and into the bloodstream.  Although research has not confirmed it.  The biggest concern is the harm they're causing to marine life(10).

My EWG Sunscreen Picks:

Formula- You can either get the sunscreen in a spray form or in a tube.  I prefer the tube overall.  The spray sunscreen I've noticed didn't offer as great of coverage- especially when in direct sunlight or at the pool.

SPF/Mineral- They use an SPF of 30 using non-nano zinc to block the sun's rays.

Rubs in Clear- Yes, it does rub in clear. You have to rub it in pretty good to get a completely clear application.

Longevity- It lasted for a good hour when in the water.  I felt like I needed to reapply after that or I would get burned. The formula feels a lot lighter than some mineral sunscreens.

UVB/UVA- Yes, it offers both UVB and UVA.

Water Resistant- Yes, 40 minutes.

EWG Score- 2- for the lotion and a 3 for the spray. Check it out here.

Overall Experience-  This mineral based sunscreen uses non-nano zinc oxide and antioxidant-rich California Poppy.  California Poppy is antioxidant rich and great at helping the skin against oxidation that leads to fine lines and wrinkles.  What's cool about this formula is that it shields you from not only UVA and UVB but also Blue Light rays- something that most sunscreens don't.  We are learning so much about Blue Light rays and I'm so excited to see Beautycounter pioneering the movement to block them.  The propellant is also powered by air so no harmful chemicals are being released as you spray too.  They offer this in a travel size too!  Oh and if you're not into sprays no worries, they also have a lotion an stick form.  Check them out here!

All Good-

Formula- This sunscreen comes in a spray form, stick, lotion, lip balm- you name it they carry it!  They also have kid's specific formulas and tinted versions too.

SPF/Mineral- They use an SPF of 30 using non-nano zinc oxide in their lotions, and sprays, but in their stick and tin formulations you can get up to SPF 50.

Rubs in Clear- Yes, it does rub in clear, and doesn't feel chalky.  Really hydrates the skin well.

Longevity- The longevity on this sunscreen is my fave!  I can go a full 80 minutes in the water and not have to reapply.

UVB/UVA- Yes, it offers both UVB and UVA.

Water Resistant- Yes- 80 minutes!

EWG Score- 2- for the lotion and a 6 for the spray.  Check it out here. The 6 may sound alarming however, the only 6 in the formula is the zinc oxide and the reason for that is because EWG has assessed the spray has being harmful to the lungs and breathing it in.  This is obviously subjective.  Having used the spray you can easily spray it on and not breathe it right in.  It's all in how you do it.  Another reason to look at labels ourselves instead of just going off of a computer system.

Overall Experience- I've been using All Good sunscreens for several years and it's definitely my favorite non-toxic sunscreen!  Everything about it, from ease of application, to great sun protection- it checks all the boxes and then some.  Plus, the ingredients are clean!  Often it's easy to hit two of the boxes but not all of them.  Not with All Good sunscreen!  Not only is it organic, but non-gmo, gluten free, vegan and coral reef friendly.  It uses the mineral zinc oxide that's non-nano to block the suns rays.  It's also water and sweat resistant up to 80 min. too.  But the real kicker- it comes in a clean spray! Yes, you heard me right.  There is a spray sunscreen that is clean.  Instead of using toxic chemicals for the propellant like most spray sunscreens they use a combination of jojoba and nitrogen(something that is already in the atmosphere).  The ease of use with a spray can't be beat- it's amazing!  The sprays come in a kid's version that has an spf of 30 and adult version with spf 30.  I've used them both and can say they work so well.  If you've been searching for a clean, effective sunscreen- this is it.  It takes the cake in every area!  Check out All Good sunscreen here!

Raw Elements-

Formula- This sunscreen comes in a tin form, lotion, stick, lip balm, tinted sunscreen and facial sunscreen. The overall formula is very thick and heavier when it comes to their tins and lotion formulas.  Their daily moisturizer sunscreen definitely rubs in more clear and doesn't feel as heavy.

SPF/Mineral- They use an SPF of 30 using non-nano zinc oxide in all their lotions.

Rubs in Clear- No, it doesn't.  I definitely have a white hue when I use it.

Longevity- The longevity is awesome.  It really does stay on so well!  I can go 80 minutes in water and not have to reapply.  It also doesn't sting eyes.

UVB/UVA- Yes, it offers both UVB and UVA.

Water Resistant- Yes- 80 minutes!

EWG Score- 1- all of their products are squeaky clean! Check it out here.

Overall Experience-  They're the cleanest sunscreen I've found to date.  Made with only a handful of ingredients, all of which I can pronounce easily.  It's also organic, non-gmo, Leaping Bunny Certified and Natural Products Association Certified.  They are safe for all ages, water resistant and never run or sting the eyes.  They're also reef safe- I mean does it get any better when it comes to sunscreens? The biggest thing that stands out about Raw Elements is how eco-friendly they are.  From their packaging to being conscious of how they're affecting marine life.  Especially great for babies and kids, as the ingredients are so simple and it really does protect so well. Had to include Raw Elements in my EWG Sunscreen picks.  Get them here!

Formula- I love this formula!  It feels hydrating, yet not greasy.  It absorbs so well. The specific one I love is their unscented sunscreen.  It works great for babies and kids too- so you only have to bring one sunscreen.  It comes in a tube as I mentioned, they do offer tinted facial sunscreens as well that are so great.  I wear their tinted facial sunscreen a lot in the summer. Check them out here.

SPF/Mineral- They use an SPF of 30 using non-nano zinc oxide in all their lotions.

Rubs in Clear- Yes, it is clear!  Rubs in well.

Longevity- This lasts me about 40 minutes in water but 80 minutes if I'm just sitting out in the sun.  It's not as thick as other sunscreens, so you need to re-apply more often.

UVB/UVA- Yes, it offers both UVB and UVA.

Water Resistant- No, it does not say it is on their tube, however for me it's water resistant for 40 minutes.

EWG Score- 1 or 2- Check it out here.

Overall Experience-  I love this formula.  It really doesn't feel like you're wearing a heavy sunscreen like a lot of formulas which I love.  It's also nice that it works for babies and kids too.  The unscented formula works well for sensitive skin types too.  I think this is a great everyday sunscreen option but maybe not the one I grab when I'm going to be in heavy water all day.  Check out all their options here!

Thinksport SPF 50+ Sunscreen

Formula- This is a smooth formula that blends in easy.  It comes in a tube.

SPF/Mineral- They use an SPF of 50 using non-nano zinc oxide in all their lotions.

Rubs in Clear- Yes, it is clear!  Rubs in well.

Longevity- The longevity on this is amazing.  It lasts for 80 minutes.  I don't feel like I need to reapply that often.

UVB/UVA- Yes, it offers both UVB and UVA.

Water Resistant- Yes, up to 80 minutes.

EWG Score-  2- Check it out here.

Overall Experience-  This is just a really great overall sunscreen that offers some of the highest SPF protection available.  It was also the first sunscreen to see the Whole Foods Premium Requirements.  It's clean and effective and can work for the whole family. I also love that it's very accessible!  You can find it at Target, Walmart, CVS and other drugstores.  Definitely a great sunscreen for those long days at the beach!  Check it out here.

Badger Clear Sport Sunscreen SPF 40 Unscented

Formula- This is a heavier formula.  It comes in a tube.

SPF/Mineral- They use an SPF of 40 using non-nano zinc oxide in all their lotions.

EWG Score-  1- Check it out here.

Overall Experience-  I love that this is unscented and with only 4 simple ingredients.  It's great for the whole family.  It's also easy to find.  You can find the Badger brand at Walmart, Target, and Walgreens.  Great for the beach as it has a high water resistant time of 80.  I found that I could lather this on and not burn for several hours.  A great EWG sunscreen pick. Check it out here!

Babo Botanicals Clear Zinc Sunscreen

Formula- This is a great smooth formula, hydrating but doesn't feel greasy. Comes in a tube.

SPF/Mineral- They use an SPF of 30 in this formula. They use non-nano zinc oxide in all their lotions.

Rubs in Clear- Yes, it is clear!  Rubs in well.

Longevity- The longevity on this is great!  I have used this on my kids and it really lasts so well, even in direct sun.

UVB/UVA- Yes, it offers both UVB and UVA.

Water Resistant- Yes, up to 80 minutes.

EWG Score- 2- Check it out here.

Overall Experience-  I found this sunscreen before at Target!  I was so excited to find a budget friendly option when it came to mineral sunscreen that I didn't have to order online.  You can also find Babo Botanicals at Walmart!  You can get this for $10 and it hits all the marks of a great EWG Sunscreen.  I love how it's unscented too, making it great for delicate baby skin and even sensitive adult skin.  Get it here!

I hoped that helped you when choosing a safe EWG sunscreen picks for yourself and your family!  Do you have a favorite mineral sunscreen that you use?

Filtered Water 2021 Ultimate Guide | Is it Better?

Filtered Water 2021 Ultimate Guide | Is it Better?

If you are trying to improve your health then the amount of water you drink in a day is probably something you have put some attention to.  But have you ever looked at the type of water you are drinking or (the scary part) what else could be lurking in your glass of water?!   I am diving in today to help you make a better choice when it comes to the source of your water so you can make an informed decision for you and your family!

Types Of Water

If you have looked at the beverage section of any grocery store or convenience store it is easy to see that there are so many different water choices to quench your thirst. The water types I am going to look closer at include: tap water, filtered water, spring water, distilled water and purified water.  I am also sharing with you my top choices for at home water filtration.

Tap Water

Tap water is simply the water you get that comes straight out of your faucet at home.  This water is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), who sets legal limits on over 90 contaminants. (1)  These contaminants can include anything from microorganisms, disinfectants and their byproducts, chemicals and more.

What is important for you to consider is what is in YOUR tap water as it can differ greatly by location.  You can easily access this information in a couple ways.

  • First, tap water suppliers publish their water quality tests. This report is called a Consumer Confidence Report and should be mailed out yearly.  You can also call your utility and ask for a copy or look here to see if it is online.
  • Secondly, you can go to the EWG’s National Tap Water Database and enter your zip code.  Here it will show you any contaminants found that exceed the Environmental Working Group’s health guidelines.  These are different and more stringent than the EPA’s legal limits.

A reminder that legal levels don’t always mean safe as legal limits for contaminants in tap water have not been updated in almost 20 years and therefore may not meet the most recent health guidelines if you follow the EPA’s levels.

Also, don’t forget that not only is chlorine added to kill bacteria but also more tap water than not has had fluoride added to it.  While many say that this is to protect teeth from decay, countries that don’t have fluoride added to their drinking water have also seen a drop in cavities amongst children. (2)  Add the concern of health risks associated with consuming a neurotoxin and it makes looking into other water sources a must!

Filtered Water

Filtered water is water that has gone through further purification to remove any impurities from the water.  One thing that is super important to consider is that no one filter is one size fits all.  You will need to consider what is in your tap water before choosing a filter.  You can go to the Environmental Working Group’s National Tap Water Database and based on your zip code it will also recommend what kind of water filter you need to remove the specific impurities and contaminants in your water. These include:

  • Activated Carbon: Is a common method used in water filtration that is found in many filter systems.  The carbon filter removes contaminants through adsorption (basically the carbon uses a magnetic-like pull on certain contaminants and traps them within the pores of the surface while the water flows through).  The effectiveness of a carbon filter can vary greatly from one to another.  Some will only remove chlorine (which improves taste and odor), while others are certified to removed asbestos, lead, mercury and volatile organic compounds, or VOCs.
  • Reverse Osmosis: This is a system that begins with activated carbon to remove contaminants.  It then will take it a step further and the water will pass through a semipermeable membrane that will block any particles that are larger than a water molecule.  This can include: arsenic, fluoride, hexavalent chromium, nitrates and perchlorate.  Unfortunately, it also includes the removal of minerals from the water like calcium, magnesium, etc.

Spring Water

Spring water is water that has been harvested from a natural spring.  To understand fully what that means as far as drinking spring water, it is important to know what a spring is.

A spring is a water resource formed when the side of a hill, a valley bottom or other excavation intersects a flowing body of groundwater at or below the local water table, below which the subsurface material is saturated with water. (3)

Spring water is typically rich in minerals giving it an extra crisp taste to it.  One thing to be noted about spring water is that it shouldn’t be assumed that it doesn’t have contaminants in it.  Bottled water is regulated by the FDA and doesn’t have as stringent of guidelines as the EPA does for tap water.  That is why it is so important to know the source of your spring water. I LOVE Mountain Valley Spring Water.  On their website is a Water Quality Report so I know exactly what I am drinking. PLUS, it gets delivered in glass bottles.  No plastic!  The glass is better for the environment, avoids leaching of any chemicals into the water and helps to maintain the high quality of water and taste. So good!

Distilled Water

This type of water is steam that is collected from boiling water that is then cooled and returned to a liquid form.  This process will remove minerals, many microbes and some chemicals that have a higher boiling point than water.  And while this type of water is safe to drink according to WebMD, (4) many will find it bland as it doesn't have any minerals in it.

Purified Water

This is water that is nearly free of chemicals and microbes.  This is achieved through some of the methods previously mentioned including reverse osmosis or distillation.  Purified water must meet the U.S. Pharmacopeia definition of purified water, which is that it must not contain more than 10 parts per million of total dissolved solids and depending on the type of treatment it has gone through it may also be free of microbes. (5)

My Favorite Filters:

Clearly Filtered is the best pitcher water filter I've found on the market!

Clearly Filtered – Water Pitcher (budget friendly) or Under the Sink-

I was so excited when I found this water filter!  I often share about water filters but they usually come with a heftier price tag. Not Clearly Filtered!  This is a great budget friendly option for your home.  Coming in at $75, this is a huge savings from many standard water filters.  This isn't like most of the water pitchers on the market either!  What makes it different?  Allow me to explain.

  • Only pitcher independently tested to NSF standards 42, 53, 244, 401 & 473
  • Removes Fluoride, Lead, BPA, Glyphosate, PFOAs, Hormones & over 220 of the most harmful tap water impurities
  • Retains the natural minerals & nutrients found in the water

Clearly Filtered uses a unique Affinity Filtration System to filter the water.  It uses magnet like chemical absorption, as well as the physical structure to ensure the best filtration.  Opposed to having a straight line to work through the contaminants have to move through a series of twists and turns.  This makes it a slower process which ensures you're getting the most contaminants out of your water!  Often times other filters will create great tasting water with simple carbon filters but don't address the chemical contaminants. Clearly Filters does!  They don't just stop with chemicals, they also remove physical contaminants, radiological, and biological.  All at 99.9%!  You can check out their performance data on their website here.  The big kicker is that it doesn't remove all the beneficial minerals!  They keep out the bad stuff and keep the good stuff.  Check out the pitcher option here!

*I also wanted to mention their 3-Stage Under The Sink Water Filtration System as an option as well.  Although it's a lot pricier overall it's still less expensive then many options out there when it comes to water filtration.  It installs under your sink, doesn't require a plumber and can be done in 10 minutes.  I also love that that the hoses are stainless steel.  It's also great for renters because it can easily be removed.  Check it out here!

I've had the Berkey water filter for 10 years!

This is the water filtration system that I have and love!  I've used it for 10 years now. This filters out everything, even fluoride with their fluoride filter.  I would recommend for most average size families the Big Berkey– which is what we have, but you may want a smaller one or larger one depending on family size.  I always tell people to think about not just drinking water but also water that you use to cook with.  It might seem like a lot initially but really you go through the water quick for daily use.  Once you buy it, you will only have to replace the filters every couple years, except the fluoride filter usually every 8-12 months.  A worthwhile investment knowing you will have clean water for a lifetime!

The black Berkey water purification element is what removes majority of the contaminants.  They trap the contaminants with micro-pores and then absorb them so they don't get passed to your drinking water.

Here are the contaminants they remove:

  • Viruses
  • Pathogenic Bacteria
  • Chlorine and Chloramine
  • Heavy Metals
  • Aluminums
  • Pharmaceutical Drugs
  • It also can remove or reduce gasoline, arsenic, nitrites, petroleum products, rust and silt.

*If you also get the fluoride filter- which is a totally separate filter besides the black Berkey water purification element, you will be filtering out fluoride, which I highly recommend as well!

We have the Big Berkey water filter.  We initially had the Travel Berkey, but that was too small as our family has grown. I also have the Berkey shower filter and love that too.  Check out Berkey here!

Mountain Valley Spring water is the purest natural water.

Mountain Valley Spring Water-

This is the last water recommendation I love.  I've been getting this water delivered to my home for the last year.  It's fresh spring water from the spring in the Ouachitas Mountains.  The water is sodium free and has a naturally detoxifying pH blend of calcium, magnesium and potassium.

Their water is tested for contaminants.

Our natural spring water is tested regularly for any trace of multiple organic and inorganic chemicals that are regulated by the FDA. Additionally, we also measure and test for any presence of unregulated contaminants. No contaminants were detected above the FDA’s allowable limits in our testing. Mountain Valley Spring water meets all standards of quality water established by the FDA.

Check out their water quality report here.

They bottle their water in glass to preserve it's freshness and taste.  So you don't have to be concerned with plastics leaching into the water.  I get their 5 gallon water jugs delivered to my house every month.  I love knowing that I have pure spring drinking water always.  You might wonder why drink spring water when you have a Berkey?  Great question.  Spring water is full of all the essential minerals.  It also is very pure unlike most city water. Even with the Berkey purifying it, spring water in my opinion still is the cleaner option.  It's the way nature intended water to be- untouched.  I love my Berkey and think it's a good investment because no matter what happens in the world you always have the option of filtering your own water with a Berkey.  However, I like to still drink the spring water on a consistent basis.  Our family gets 5 gallon glass jugs per month and it's the perfect amount for us.

Check to see if they deliver Mountain Valley Spring Water in your area here!

I hope this was helpful when looking for filtered drinking water for your family.

Mother’s Day Gift Guide 2021

Mother’s Day Gift Guide 2021

Sharing my favorites in my Mother's Day gift guide 2021 to help you celebrate that special mom in your life!  These gifts are perfect for a mom, grandma, aunt, daughter, friend…or even if you need to get yourself something;).  Check out my top picks to treat those special ladies and celebrate Mother’s Day!

Mother's Day Gift Guide 2021-

OSEA Anti-Aging Body Balm- This is a favorite body product of theirs!  You get the hydrating benefits of a lotion but also the anti-aging benefits of a serum…a perfect combination.  It has top notch ingredients that will take your skin to the next level. I apply it on my skin while it's still slightly damp after showering to lock in moisture. It has the essential oils passionfruit, jasmine, lavender, and rosemary which give it an almost tart sweet smell to it, which I love!  Anyone would love to receive this. Get it here!

Beautycounter Skin Twin Foundation- If you have been around for any time at all, you know I LOVE this foundation.  Definitely my favorite liquid foundation in clean beauty.  It is the perfect consistency and it feels hydrating but offers the coverage I still crave.  A great medium coverage overall which means it looks like your skin but better.   I wear the color 340 with self tanner and 310 if I'm not wearing self tanner.   The mom in your life would definitely up her makeup game with this.  Get it here!

Maya Chia Straight A Serum- This isn't just another serum.  It's a serum that means business and gets results…quickly.  Since using it, my skin looks brighter, more even and overall alive and not dull.  What makes this serum so special is that it contains the plant retinol bakuchiol as well as moth bean extract- another plant derived retinol.  But it doesn't stop there.  The formula also has an encapsulated retinol.  This is a derivative of Vitamin A without BHT (which has been shown to cause liver damage in rats- even in small amounts).  Conventional retinol typically contains BHT.   Besides the powerful retinols it also contains Vitamin C and Vitamin E, which will brighten the skin and help fade hyperpigmentation.  You’re also going to get some serious hydration from this serum as well with Buriti oil and chia seed oil.   I can't tell you how many people have used this and have become sold overnight- literally.   A skin changing serum for sure!  Check out The Straight A Serum here.

Coyuchi Sheets-  These sheets are a cut above and worth the money in my opinion.  They feel silky soft on the skin and hold up well in washings.   I also love that they don't wrinkle as easily as other sheets.   Sometimes I feel sateen sheets can feel extra heavy but these don't feel that way.  They have a lightness to them.  I have the color Mid Gray.  My husband is obsessed with them!  He has told me multiple times how he feels they keep him cooler at night.  Which is saying a lot from someone who is a hot sleeper.  If sateen sheets aren't your thing, they also have percale, linen, jersey and flannel.  Your mom will feel so pampered with these sheets.  Check out Coyuchi Sheets here!

Evolvh Shampoo and Conditioner- My hair feels so bouncy and clean after using Evolvh.  And the clean feeling lasts for days!  I get so much volume from this shampoo and conditioner, plus it foams too!  I have found it to work for all hair types and it has a really great citrusy scent to it.  Any mom would love a clean shampoo and conditioner that works so well.  Check it out here!

Bloomeffects Tulip Dew Drops- I realized I hadn't shared this with you yet and I thought shame on me!  This has quickly become one of my favorite skin prepping products before makeup.  I was sent this by Credo Beauty and I must say it lives up to the hype.  It's a dewy serum that you apply right after hydrating your skin with a mist.  If you find your skin tends to be on the dry side I would apply your moisturizer first, then apply the dew drops right before your makeup.  These draw water to the skin and leave it feeling completely dewy feeling- just as the name suggests!  It helps to blurb fine lines and even skin out so your foundation doesn't settle in.  You will love them!  Check out Tulip Dew Drops here!

Purity Coffee- You all know I love Purity Coffee, as does my hubs. Purity coffee is true to the name- so pure.  They take it to the next level when it comes to sourcing. And, it has such a smooth taste to it!  You can personalize what type of Purity Coffee you give as a gift – there is whole bean coffee in 12 oz bags or 5 lbs. They offer a Dark Roast, a Medium Roast, a Founder’s Blend and a Decaf Roast(Swiss Water Processed), you can get a coffee subscription too (you choose when and how much) and they offer single serve coffee with their coffee pods and coffee sachets called Pocket Purity. So many options and in my opinion moms deserve coffee!  Get Purity Coffee here!

Glass Mugs (lead free)- I use these everyday for my coffee!  They look chic, aren't too big and they're free of lead.  It's hard to find ceramic mugs that are lead free.  That's why I ended up turning to glass instead.  Can't recommend them enough and the price is great for a set of 6! They would also go perfectly with some Purity Coffee for a cute and non toxic gift for Mother’s Day. Get them here!

Pique Tea- I'm obsessed with this tea!  They are the cleanest tea on the market.  Using cold brew crystallization that maximizes all the plant actives.  Plus, it is triple toxin screened for heavy metals and toxic mold.  I've reordered it which tells me that there's something to it.  I love taking the liposomal vitamin c and elderberry everyday for an immunity boost.  I call it my candy shot because it's so sweet and always hits the spot.  Then I love their hibiscus beauty elixir tea for an afternoon pick me up.  It's great iced as well!  I'll add some stevia drops to it.  I've also added it to my smoothies.  Then at night the Reishi Calm Elixir is amazing!  It really does help to calm me overall and help me sleep- a game changer!  They have so many more teas too.  Check out their bestsellers here!

White Lotus Home Organic Shredded Latex Pillow-There are a variety of pillow options offered by White Lotus Home.  My hubs has the shredded latex pillow and he LOVES it and he says he has never had a pillow that he has liked more.  It is unique in that you can customize the amount of fill that is in it.   Just get a zippered case for the pillow when selecting the type of pillow and you'll be able to take latex out if it's too much.  I love this feature!  They also offer a more firm, 100% cotton pillow that I have and is also customizable!  Use code: GGG for 20% off. Get the White Lotus Home Pillows here.

by Rosie Jane- As a person who typically doesn’t love scents in general (whether natural or not!) the by\ Rosie Jane scents have still managed to win me over.  They are just so good!  These aren't too strong and are more complex than just one fragrance note. It wears SO well!  It's only $25 and you get all 7 of her scents in the cutest box!  A perfect gift idea.  Then once you've tried them you can purchase the larger size.  I can't recommend her fragrances enough. I love the scents Madie, Blake, Angie and Dylan- clearly it's hard to choose! Check out all of by\Rosie Jane fragrances here!

Beautycounter Sheer Genius Lip Conditioning Lipstick- This is the perfect everyday lipstick!  The color is buildable, it is soooo creamy and the color options are all so pretty.  My newest favorite is Lily.  And the light vanilla scent is so good.  Get it here!

OSEA Body Scrub- Talk about a scrub!  This body scrub doesn't mess around.  It is filled with Dead Sea and Himalayan Pink Salts, Bolivian Rose and Organic seaweed of course.  Plus, it boasts some Acai, shea butter and passionfruit that leave your skin feeling like butter.  I applied to wet skin and used circular motions.  My skin felt so refreshed and clean! A great way to pamper your skin. Grab your Salt of The Earth Body Scrub here!

Nisolo Cleo Clutch Convertible Purse- This is a new to me brand but do I ever love it!! Nisolo is a top notch brand.  They are sustainable, fair trade, socially responsible and certified B corp amongst others.  I have gotten to try out some of their products and I absolutely had to share the Cleo Clutch Convertible Purse on the Mother’s Day Guide.  It is smaller so can be used as a clutch, put in a bigger bag, worn over the shoulder or even as a fanny pack.  Did I mention it is also cute and classy??  They also have shoes, accessories, clothes…all made with the highest standards.  Your mom will love anything Nisolo carries.  Check out the Cleo Clutch here!

What are you going to get your mom for Mother’s Day?!
