Back by popular demand we are so excited for our second annual Best of Green Beauty 2017! This was such a hit last year, that my girl Lisa from This Organic Girl and I had to do it again, giving you only the best of the best.
We had three criteria when choosing products:
1. We had to love it.
2. Had to be clean(duh).
3. And of course above all it had to work- no compromises.
It’s easy to get lost in the sea of products these days- even green beauty products. We wanted to bring you products that are tried and true and live up to the hype! We both have tried a ton of products in our day as bloggers and these are straight up standouts. Products we go back to again and again because they’re that good!
After all you shouldn’t have to compromise when transitioning to green beauty. The game has changed friends and green beauty has got it going on! We don’t feel like we’re sacrificing at all with these products. If anything they perform better than their conventional ones.
Get ready to hang with the stars because the Best of Green Beauty 2017 is here! And don’t forget to head to Instagram for a chance to win all this loot!
Suzi – These hands soaps scream luxe! They are so beautiful you hardly want to use them, but then you smell them and you can’t help yourself. Bar soaps in the past could seem boring and old school but Osmia has taken a simple bar soap and turned it into a must have luxury product! The perfect gift anytime of year. My fave scent is the coffee mint!
Lisa –If you have an appreciation for artisan formulators who not only perfect their craft but take it to the next level with thoughtful packaging and presentation then look no further than OSMIA. Not only are these soaps handmade, they are formulated with organic, wildcrafted, conflict-free, top shelf ingredients. It’s not uncommon for a batch of OSMIA soap to adorn $1,000 worth or organic essential oils. AND these soaps are cured two weeks longer than industry standard making them dense and long lasting. Let’s just say my heart skips a beat every time I open a new bar. Suzi says her fave is coffee mint which is next on my list. So far my fave is Milky Rose.
Suzi – Let’s just say the moment I used this oil I knew I was going to be hooked! This body oil is the best of the best. It comes in a dark bottle that helps preserve the oil. The smell is amazing, with notes of jasmine, rose and magnolia. My skin feels so hydrated but without the greasiness, just supple and smooth. I can’t get enough- already used up two bottles!
Lisa – Three words: Max and Me knows oils. I’ve tried several of their face and body oils and they are all out of this world. We chose Circle of Protection as our #1 pick but really, any of their body oils take skin nourishment to the next level. Smooth, fast absorbing, rich in color with a whisper of fragrance, this oil is frankly a stroke of brilliance. The base of Circle of Protection is a blend of certified organic Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil (oil expressed from the kernels of this African tree), wildcrafted Marula Oil and certified organic Musk Rose Seed Oil – scented with a blend of essential oils. Light, nutty and fruity, this oil will bring you to your knees.
Suzi – This nail polish takes the cake when it comes to longevity. You put it on as a top coat after applying nail polish. You’ll be amazed how your manicure lasts! The kicker? It rates a 1 on EWG!
Lisa –I picked this up on a whim when I needed a new top coat and with no expectations I brought it to the salon for a mani/pedi. No joke, my pedi lasted a week longer than any pedi I’ve ever gotten. #truth And it’s cleaner than most nontoxic nail polishes!
Suzi – This is a staple and must have at all times in my beauty routine. It’s the best natural hair spray I’ve come across in green beauty- it works and works well! My hair is fine and thin and this doesn’t weigh my hair down but gives it a lift. I can even brush out my hair after using it the day before and my hair is even better! Did I mention this comes in a travel size bottle as well?! I stock up on both the full size and travel size. My hubs is even hooked too! Say hello to your new favorite!
Lisa – Let’s be honest. I don’t have to buy too many beauty products these days. But this gem!? I literally buy it for myself like 4x a year. I have curly hair so every time I wash + diffuse, I finish with Josh Rosebrook’s hairspray. No ifs, ands or buts about it. You can use it lightly to maintain volume and control fly-aways or layer it for a strong hold. This is hands down the best hairspray green beauty has to offer. And just when you thought the world couldn’t get any better, try and pick your chin up off the floor when you look at the ingredients and wonder how Josh can lock your waves into place using brown rice, yuca starch and glycerin (all certified organic of course).
Suzi – This mask smells amazing and truly gives you a glow after using. It helps to even out skin tone more than any others I’ve used! It hydrates and detoxes but doesn’t dry your skin out. This mask instantly transports you to the island of Hawaii where it’s made by hand. The amount of dedication that goes into each batch is truly amazing! You won’t be disappointed!
Lisa – From start to finish the entire Bean experience is next level skincare. First, be still my heart with their hand carved glass-in-wood packaging. Next, raw + organic ingredients sourced from co-ops, biodynamic farms (as well as homegrown) are thoughtfully handcrafted in Kauai, Hawaii. This chocolate creamy mask will transform your skin. And I don’t say that lightly. I was converted the day it evened and brightened my sunburned cheeks and forehead. Best mask of the year right here!
Suzi – This mascara is an all around winner. It gives my lashes separation, length and doesn’t come off during the day. Plus, no irritation at all! It gets better the more you use it too! The formula gets better after some air has gotten to it. Give it two weeks and you’ll have vixen lashes for days!
Lisa – I think every girl would agree with me. It’s a “lashes or bust” world and we are just living in it. Lashes tie a whole look together and Hush + Dotti does not disappoint. This formula lengthens like the best of ’em and with a couple of coats your will have va va voom volume that will stop anyone in their tracks.
Suzi – This deodorant takes the cake for best natural deodorant. It goes on so smooth, no scraping your underarms anymore, it smells amazing and best of all- it works! I can put it on and get two days wear out of it- smelling fresh! I’ve had no irritation either!
Lisa – This deo does it all. Eliminates odor, goes on smooth and keeps me dry. Yeah I said it. This formula keeps me dryer than any other natural formula out there and not only does it eliminate odor, it actually makes me smell like roses. Oh and I used a whole stick without experiencing any irritation.
Suzi –This mask is everything! I use it everyday in the morning to wake my skin up. I put it on when I’m brushing my teeth and then rinse it off after. It’s my cleanser and mask in one. It gives my skin a pick me up and glow for the rest of the day! The exfoliant in the mask isn’t harsh at all- which I love. Gentle enough to use everyday. Your skin will thank you! Did I mention it’s only $28?! Carolyn the founder really knows her stuff and takes great lengths to make sure the products are made with the best of the best.
Lisa – Suzi and I met LIVE Botanical formulator Carolyn at iBE Dallas and we were both so impressed with this up and coming brand. Her sourcing is crazy clean and her passion for formulating is palpable. But better than any of that is her Honey Rose Cleansing Mask. This mask exfoliates and cleans in two ways – with herbal grains (manual) and fruit enzymes (chemical). And it’s super versatile. You can use it as a mask and let it sit or you can use it immediately as a cleanser/exfoliator. Either way, get ready to GLOW girl!
Suzi – This illuminating serum is a staple in my makeup routine. It instantly gives my skin a glow and lights up my whole complexion. I love the color After Hours, it wakes up tired skin and yet looks natural. I mix mine with foundation or just apply it on top.
Lisa – Anytime my makeup doubles as skincare, I’m in. But when it surpasses pro-lines in both performance and health….there’s nothing left to do but shout it from the rooftops! The Highlight of the Day comes in three “colors” and I love them all. Each brings a certain je ne sais quoi to my look. I love it for my cheek bones, Cupid’s Bow, bridge of my nose and if I want to get jiggy with it, a little mixed into my moisturizer for my décolletage too.
Suzi – This red lipstick is the quintessential red color for everyone. It’s a classic hands down. I love that with one swipe I can transform my look from ho hum to next level. The formula is so good too. It has a weighty feel for a lipstick formula and stays put on the lips all day. You’ll feel like a goddess carrying around this lipstick! The packaging is so chic too!
Lisa – This red looks good on both warm or cool skin tones and takes your look from subtle to bold in just a few strokes. If you’ve never found a red that works for you..look no further than KW Red. My favorite thing about this lipstick (okay I have two fave things) is it’s matte so it wont move. It literally stays put all day and I love that I don’t have to worry about getting it on my teeth or it smudging onto my skin. I also love the packaging here. The lipstick tube sits heavy in my hand and is like a piece of jewelry for my bag. It’s also refillable so when you run out, you can stock up next time (or change shades) for almost half the price.
Suzi –Want a natural shampoo and conditioner that makes your hair feel clean all the time? This is it! These are game changers when it comes to giving your hair the cleanest feeling possible. No more greasy hair from natural shampoos that don’t work! I have fine/thin hair and this works amazing for my hair. Lisa has thick curly hair and she loves it as well! Bottom line- it works all around! My hair has never felt cleaner using a natural shampoo- they nailed the formula.
Lisa – I looked far and wide, high and low and almost gave up on ever having that clean hair feeling again (sans toxins) until I met True Botanicals. Seriously. Not only does this formula clean my hair (like it truly CLEANS) but it also leaves my scalp moisturized and nourished. No itchiness or dryness from the winter season. This duo is my dessert island “must take with me” pick. True Botanicals also has a subscription option where you can select the frequency at which your items get delivered and you save 10%! Every 8 weeks is perfect for me and I adjust as I go because I don’t use conditioner as fast as I use shampoo.
Suzi – This face oil is so soothing. I put it on my skin and it instantly absorbs, giving it a supple feel. No greasy residue left behind, plus I wake up with perfectly hydrated skin. A newfound fave! I love how calming this serum is too with the blue tansy helping to soothe skin. Say goodbye to redness and ruddy skin and hello to bright and even skin!
Lisa – I love KHUS + KHUS face serums. I’ve tried their Sans Age and Blossom and both are magnificent. Sans Age has the slightest blue tint to it and smells like Blue Tansy. Made with all organic + sustainably wild crafted oils and CO2 extracts, KHUS + KHUS doesn’t play when it comes to using only the best ingredients. I love how this oil makes my face feel: supple, plump and well fed.
We are at it again with the best of clean beauty 2018! My girl Lisa from the blog This Organic Girl and I are dishing up our faves this year in clean and natural beauty. This is our third year in a row and the post always seems to be a crowd favorite.
Join the 5 Day Clean Living Challenge and start living your best natural life!
I’m going to give you a quick run down on some past favorites too that we can’t stope reaching for, plus some personal picks that I’ve tried and Lisa hasn’t. But before I do, I wanted to share a little about two places that keep me well stocked when it comes to clean and natural beauty products.
Just some of the clean beauty you can find at detox market!
This was the very first green beauty store I shopped at. I still remember angels singing when I visited the actual store in L.A. Ok, maybe angels weren’t singing but it felt like I had arrived in green beauty heaven! They have ALL the brands and more. You want some Josh Rosebrook- they’ve got you covered. Need some Osmia Organics in your life, sister they have it. Want some Odacite? No problem- they have the whole line. It’s your one stop shop for all things natural beauty! They have a list of ingredient standards, which lists ingredients they don’t allow in their formulations, so you can be sure your products are squeaky clean.
I remember hearing about their pop up shop in 2010- I was salivating to go! It was at the same time I had started to detox my beauty products. It’s so crazy to think where The Detox Market is today! There’s so many natural options, compared to 8 years ago. I love their mission on educating the consumer and bringing awareness. Forever a Detox Market fan! You can basically get any clean beauty product from their store.
Also, I love Boxwalla!
Love this clean beauty box by Boxwalla. It hits all the marks when it comes to a clean beauty box.
This is a clean beauty box that you can get bi-monthly. In case you’re not familiar withBoxwalla– allow me to introduce you. This box delivers some of the best of green beauty. I find that’s what sets them apart from other green beauty boxes is their thoughtful curations. I always find they go out on a limb and really find brands and artisans that I haven’t heard of- which I love! If you’re into trying new brands and discovering people that truly love their craft- this box is for you. I also love that this box is bi-monthly versus every month. It helps me to savor each box and really get to know the products. Their selections are always cruelty free as well. The products are also free of certain ingredients according to Boxwalla standards. You can find the specific ingredients they avoid here.Another reason I love getting behind this box! Plus, don’t get me started on their actual boxes the products come in- seriously next level. I keep each box and give them to others with gifts in them because they’re so gorgeous! Read below on how their boxes are made. A quote from Boxwalla’s website:
Each box containing Boxwalla goodies is carefully crafted from tree-free handmade paper. A small company in India makes the paper for us, from cotton scraps, using the traditional art of paper-making that involves 9 steps and takes several weeks. The handmade paper is then meticulously fashioned into the boxes that you see in the pictures. The whole process is completely child labor free and employs 63 local villagers and 20 skilled artisans whose families have been making paper for generations. We love supporting socially and environmentally conscious businesses such as these: They craft beautiful products while preserving traditional crafts and skills that would otherwise be completely lost.
If you want to start the new year off right and start discovering the best of green beauty, sign up for a Boxwalla box here!
Here are past favorites of Lisa and I that we can’t get away from:
Lisa and I wearing the beloved Mermaid Mask by Leahlani skincare.
Leahlani Mermaid Mask- Another cult favorite in clean beauty- the Mermaid Mask by Leahlani. It does wonders for the skin. First mask I used in natural beauty that literally showed improvements after the first use!
Ok, on to the BEST OF CLEAN BEAUTY 2018!
Moss Skincare Beurre Céleste Honey Antioxidant Infusion Recovery Mask in Cleansing Baume-It was love at first swipe when I used this cleansing mask/balm. It comes in a balm form and quickly melts in your hands and removes makeup and grime so effortlessly. Your skin feels so clean, and not stripped in any way. I often use it in the mornings and leave it on my skin while I brush my teeth. Such a unique formula too because it’s completely waterless- so no preservative!
African Botanics Fleurs de’Afrique-An amazing plant based retinol oil that my skin LOVES! I literally have seen a brightness in my skin and hyper pigmentation fade- no joke. If you got it, then you know what I’m talking about. I discovered this in a Boxwalla box- they are always dishing out the good stuff.
Kosas Lipstick-These lipsticks are the best. To own a Kosas lipstick is to love it! These are pigmented, long lasting and moisturizing. I almost have all 8 colors in the collection and there isn’t a bad color.
Odacite Lip Serum- I had never used a lip serum like this on my lips until Odacite’s. It helps to hydrate, minimize fine lines on the lips and plump. I love applying as my last step in my skincare routine. My lip’s nightly nightcap!
Laurel Sun Damage Repair Serum-This is a serum and oil in one that helps to repair sun damaged skin. The formula contains 27 whole organic plants! It helps to reverse the signs of aging that the sun brings. It also helps to brighten and fade age spots. The oil feels richer on the skin but it also seeps right in. When I used it I noticed a decrease in overall redness, faded sun spots and clearer skin tone.
Khus Khus Modern Herbal Fusion + RASA Restorative Potion-This is such a unique body cream. Not only does it contain adaptogenic herbs but Ayurvedic and Western nervine herbs as well. It helps to bring a calm to the nervous system. It feels so soothing and healing! Plus, my skin feels so hydrated as well.
True Botanicals Cellular Repair Serum, Antioxidant Booster and Vitamin C Booster-The Cellular Repair Serum is designed to reverse the cellular damage caused by sun exposure and aging. Pretty sure everyone wants to sign up for that-am I right?! Besides reversing cellular damage it also replenishes moisture and plumps up skin. It’s highly concentrated and goes past the surface of the skin to really get to the cellular level. This Vitamin C Booster treatment is preserved in it’s freshest form. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps to even skin tone, brighten and fade wrinkles, stimulate collagen, plus firm and repair skin. I mean every face needs this stuff. You might be wondering why it comes in a powder form. When vitamin c is mixed with a liquid it slowly loses potency. By keeping it in powder form you can be assured it’s in it’s freshest form. The Antioxidant Booster is similar to the Vitamin C Booster but it uses apple peel powder instead, which has actually been shown to be more powerful then Vitamin C! It helps brighten dark spots, even out skin tone and firm skin.
Sappho Brow Pomade- When my beloved brow cream that I had been using for a couple year from Hynt was reformulated I was back to the drawing board to find one that worked just as good! Thankfully Sappho answered my prayers. This works so well. Leaves my brows looking natural and so easy to apply. I wear the color dark brown black.
Honest Beauty Mascara- If you’ve followed me for a hot minute you know I’m OBSESSED with this mascara! It’s the best I’ve found in green beauty. It gives my lashed definition, length and drama. Plus, you can get it on Amazon and it’s under $15! I know- we hit the jackpot with this one.
Osmia Body Oil- I can’t get enough of Osmia’s Body Oil. It’s like the biggest drink of water for your body. Your skin will thank you and so will your mind as you wrap yourself in this goodness. I apply mine right out of the shower or bath and my skin stays silky smooth all day. I love the Night Oil scent- with notes of lavender, roman chamomile and atlas cedarwood. But if you don’t like scent you would love their naked oil- it has no essential oils in it.
Maya Chia The Optimist Hydrating Essence-I get SO excited for any new Maya Chia product and The Optimist was no exception. This gem is housed in a dark glass bottle, preserving every last drop of goodness. Smells divine with hints of neroli, sweet orange, and ylang ylang. The formula itself feels so hydrating on the skin and refreshing with white tea, antioxidants, fatty acids and phytonutrients- just to name a few. I can’t forget the actual spray function. It works so well! I know it might sound funny, but after truing hundreds of mists in my day, the spray function is actually quite important. You don’t want the mist to feel like it’s attacking your skin or spraying you in the eye! The Optimist sprays so well all over the face. The founder Susanne nailed it!
Honest Beauty Mascara is my favorite green beauty mascara.
Here are some favorites of mine that I discovered this year and I can’t not share:
Beautycounter’s Face Wipes- These wipes are the best I’ve found in green beauty. They offer the perfect amount of moisture, and they remove all my makeup! Plus, they’re biodegradeable.
Beautycounter’s Eye Makeup Remover-Ok, I seriously was so excited when I tried this eye makeup remover. All you Mary Kay fans will get me. Back in the day I used to be big Mary Kay Eye Makeup Remover devotee. It was the best I found and since I stopped using it I’ve never even able to find a replacement. Until now! This eye makeup remover works like a charm- can’t say it enough. If you like having an eye makeup remover- you’ll love this!
Ilia Eye Primer- I have finally found my favorite eye primer in clean beauty! This magic little wand does not mess around. It keeps my eye shadows in place the whole day, no creasing, or smudging. I can’t recommend it enough.
Tata Harper’s Clarifying Mask- I had tried this once before this year but nothing more. It had been a small sample. Then I got a full jar and lets just say, it quickly dwindled! This helps purify pores, detoxify the skin and leave you with an overall glow. Can’t get enough!
I’m so excited to share why I decided to join Beautycounter! This post has been a long time coming. If you would have told me 6 months ago that I was going to be joining Beautycounter I would have laughed. For those of you who have followed me for a long time this may come as a big surprise to you. That’s one of the reasons why I wanted to share why I decided to join Beautycounter. To not only share why I changed my mind but also share more about Beautycounter and their mission- because they mission is great and something I had no idea about. I didn’t care to listen, read, or watch. If you don’t care about reading about why I joined and just want me to share my experience with the product- then scroll to the end! 🙂 I’ve got pics of me wearing the products! And my thoughts. Plus, don’t forget to shop right now! Beautycounter’s Black Friday Sale started today! They rarely have sales- like hardly ever, so this is pretty big. Shop 15% off sitewide plus, free shipping on orders of $50 or more! Shop here!
I didn’t like the MLM or direct sales model- whatever you want to call it. I’ve been pitched to about Beautycounter more than I can count. Some have been nice and thought out but others to be honest seemed really salsey and impersonal. It turned me off.
They had ingredients in their products that I thought were bad. Specifically talc and phenoxyethanol. I’ve since done a deep dive into both and I’m no longer fearful of either. I’ll share more about it this below.
All other green beauty bloggers around me were against it and so of course so was I. I guess you could say I followed the pack! Everyone has their standards and I can only make this decision for myself. It just feels good to make MY own educated decision though and have researched it. I think it’s easy to get swept up in things, and listen to what bloggers say as Bible. People think what I say is absolute all the time. I constantly want to encourage others to do their own research- us bloggers don’t know everything- far from it. We are all on a journey!
Overall, I didn’t give Beautycounter a chance. I didn’t read up on them, or even entertain conversations about them. I simply looked at some of their products on their site and that was it.
Ingredient Deep Dive- Phenoxyethanol and Talc
Phenoxyethanol- This is used as a preservative in products. If a product contains water or aloe, it needs a preservative otherwise mold, yeast and bacteria can grow. There is a lot of false statements about phenoxyethanol out there on the internet. Trust me- I’ve read them! Beautycounter uses a pure form of phenoxyethanol, which has been tested twice by Tufts University. They have also had 1,4 dioxane and ethylene oxide tested on their raw form and it came back negative. Phenoxyethanol is not bioaccumulative so it’s not something that builds up in your body like many chemicals can. Beautycounter only allows products to contain less than 1% of phenoxyethanol in all their products. They work with formulators to only use what’s absolutely necessary. I don’t know about you but I’ve had multiple green beauty products have mold in them! Preservatives have been made to be the villain. We need them in formulations. Obviously, there are good ones and bad. Would I recommend you use any brand that has a product that contains phenoxyethanol-no. It’s important to know the sourcing. I trust Beautycounter’s work and efforts to make sure they have a clean source and our third party testing to ensure it stays clean.
It’s also important to understand the studies done and the percentages used. Many people are citing studies that have used 100% phenoxyethanol! I don’t care what chemical you use, you’re going to have some negative impacts when used at that high of a dosage. Some reports also state irritation when using phenoxyethanol. I would say to check if the source is clean but to also see how much they’re using in a product.
Made Safe and EWG the two most credible third party non-toxic certifications enable phenoxyethanol to be used at less than 1%.
The thing I love and respect about Beautycounter is that they are constantly wanting to improve and find better solutions. They don’t claim to know it all! They are working with industry leaders to always find a newer list of preservatives to use. They have worked to create a Safer Preservative Challenge and Sustainable Chemistry Alliance. I would also be cautious of new preservatives that have come out on the market that claim to be clean when no research has been done on them. Let’s always keep asking questions!
Talc- I had thought talc was a big no, no since I went green 8 years ago. But I’ve quickly learned I was wrong. Talc isn’t bad, it’s the by product of talc- asbestos and other heavy metals that can be the problem. Beautycounter works only with a certified company that is asbestos free and they don’t stop there, they then third party test all their talc to ensure there’s no contamination. Once again, Beautycounter always takes their efforts to the next level!
My biggest piece of advice as I preach all the time as a green blogger is to do your own research and be your own advocate! Don’t just believe everything you read, hear or see.
Fast Forward several months and now I want to share why I decided to join Beautycounter and why I changed my mind. I thought about this and it really boiled down to 5 main things.
Third Party Testing-
For those who might not be aware of what third party testing is, let me explain. Third party testing is an independent organization that tests the product to ensure it is what it’s supposed to be. They make sure it’s safe and has the ingredients it’s supposed to have in it. For ex. Beautycounter had to recall some of their face cream back in 2017 because of a failed preservative and microbial growth. I don’t know any green/natural beauty brands that are third party testing their products! The FDA is so loose on regulations for beauty products. A company could manufacture a product and list the ingredients on the label but the ingredients could be different then what’s actually in the label- and no one would know.
Beautycounter’s mission is to create laws that would force companies to be accountable. To be honest, I really didn’t fully understand this or think it was a big deal when it came to beauty until my own health journey with hashimotos. I learned that heavy metals could be a trigger for my thyroid condition! I also had a doctor share her own journey with heavy metal toxicity and an autoimmune condition. I’m not sharing this to bring fear but to be aware. I’ve been in this space for a long time and I wouldn’t have thought about heavy metals in products before. Beautycounter tests their makeup line three times for 10 heavy metals before they put it out for the consumer. Since natural makeup contains many minerals from the earth, even though they’re natural, they still can carry a load of heavy metals. If you’re using these consistently that can produce a heavy metal load. The fact that Beautycounter third party tests all their products is huge. I literally know what’s in each product!
They aren’t just third party testing for heavy metals but for common toxic ingredients like phthalates, formaldehyde, 1,4 dioxane, etc.
This coalition is pretty amazing! Beautycounter created this alliance of companies that supports the Personal Care Products Safety Act. If you’re not familiar with the bill it would require manufacturers to post complete label information about products online and force beauty companies to provide the Food and Drug Administration with information about the ingredients used in their products. The last time a bill was passed to regulate personal care products it was 1938! I think it’s time to start linking arms and make our voices heard.
Companies in the coalition are well known green beauty brands.
Vapour Organics, Annamarie Skincare, Follain, OSEA, Rahua, Silk Therapeutics, S.W. Basics, Vinter’s Daughter, and TenOverTen to name a few. Beauty Counter unified everyone and created something so much more impactful than if everyone was on their own. There are power in numbers! I love that Beauty Counter isn’t trying to bring other companies down but create positive change together. I love the quote from founder Gregg Refrew-
I set out to get safer products in the hands of everyone, not to get Beautycounter products into the hands on everyone.
Beautycounter is creating change and that’s something I want to be a part of!
Wearing Beautycounter’s BC Red Color Intense Lipstick, Satin Powder Blush in Guava and The Classic Eyeshadow Palette in Ivory, Sahara and Copper.
Beautycounter Spreads The Clean Beauty Message-
Isn’t that what it’s all about? Getting the clean beauty message out! Beautycounter is pioneering this. For so long I was against one of the companies making the biggest impacts in the natural beauty industry. Instead of linking arms to join in the support to raise awareness I was fighting it. They have the resources and have set it up where people are getting educated and empowered to make better choices for themselves and their families. I want to be part of a movement that is supporting the clean beauty movement and women in business.
The amount of work they are doing to clean up the industry is amazing. You can literally get email updates on their advocacy work by signing up here!
We can do more TOGETHER!
This is one of my favorite aspects of Beautycounter. The people you meet. Women seriously passionate about making a difference and sharing it with their friends and family. Beautycounter first and foremost wants to educate the consumer and the amount of materials and resources they share is amazing!
Learning from one another- that’s what it’s all about. Not, I know more than you, here’s what to think, but an open dialogue where we are always growing. People aren’t just detoxing their beauty but their lives. It opens up the conversation. When you have a community of women who are sharing together- good things happen. You can lean on one another.
Beautycounter Supports Women Building Businesses-
Ok, this point is one that I strongly believe in and I’m so passionate about. I love that women can create a business that fits their lifestyle. A business that can support their family. If you would have told me I would be in direct sales 6 months ago, I would have thought you were joking. But now I get it. When your passion lines up with it, it’s impossible to say no.
Gregg, the founder, set it up as direct sales because she wanted it to be personal and relational. She wanted to educate the consumer. She could have set it up to be a retail but she didn’t. She wanted consumers to know ingredients and to ask questions. That’s why she chose direct sales. The stories I’ve heard from women being able to support their families are definitely moving to say the least.
From being able to buy healthier food now for their family because of earning extra income through Beautycounter. To being able to take their family on a vacation or affording a mom to stay at home with her kids. Beautycounter has literally changed these women’s lives.
I recently watched a video where Gregg the founder shared why women need stop apologizing for being in direct sales. Why are we apologizing? Because we now can afford to live the lifestyle we want? To pay for those ballet lessons for our child or educate others about nontoxic products? It’s silly! We need to own it and realize the change we’re making!
Those are my 5 reasons why I joined Beautycounter. These are my why’s.
Beautycounter’s Classic Eyeshadow Palette, Guava Satin Powder Blush and Color Intense Lipstick in BC Red.
I also wanted to share with you some of the product I’ve tried and their bestsellers-
I’m going to be sharing my experience with other products too- follow me on Instagram to get the most up to date looks! Also, don’t forget to shop the Holiday Collection! From what I’ve been told, it’s a limited edition, and they only bring back a few select items. Shop Holiday here!
My organic beauty foundation guide is officially complete…at least until I try another foundation that I like! I’ve tried a ton of foundations since going green 7 years ago and I’ve narrowed it down to the products that performed. After all you shouldn’t have to sacrifice a good foundation when transitioning to green beauty.
I really wanted to give you guys all the tools to make the best decision when choosing a foundation. I broke it down into easy to read categories, getting specific on skin type even. Also, all the photos below are taken in the same light up until the W3ll People BB Cream. After that I added new foundations and they are in a different light. However, there is no filter on any of them. The foundations are on the right side in the photo for the first half of the reviews, then for the second half of the reviews they’re on the left side. If I’m wearing foundation on one side then I’m wearing nothing on the other side. I wanted you guys to see the comparison. This is literally what the product looks like on my skin. I really hope it helps you to find a foundation that works for your skin and that you love!

Formula: Comes in a stick form. It feels like a thicker cream.
How it looks on: It gives a very natural dewy look.
Coverage: It gives light to medium coverage.
Skin type: This foundation is great for those with dry to combination skin. I like applying a finishing powder on top to help set it for the day since it can wear off by the end of the day.
Why I like it: I love how easy it is to use and the buildable coverage you can get with it. You don’t have to worry about anything spilling out since it’s in stick form. A great option for those who want a natural look but with some coverage. It’s also quick to apply, so good mom option for when you only have 5 minutes to get ready. Get your Vapour Foundation Stick here!
Formula: Comes in a solid cream compact. It feels like a solid cream foundation opposed to liquid.
How it looks on: It gives a very covered, more matte look. This is great for those who like a heavier foundation and full coverage.
Coverage: Medium to full coverage.
Skin Type: This foundation is great for those with oily to combination and even dry if you make sure and apply an oil or moisturizer before application.
Why I like it: I can literally apply this in the morning and still look fresh faced by 7 at night. It really keeps you looking polished all day long. It’s great for days you need long wear and days you just need more coverage. Snag your Kjaer Weis Foundation here!
Formula: This is a liquid foundation and is creamy and moisturizing and comes in a glass container- which I love!
How it looks on: It looks dewy and natural.
Coverage: It offers medium coverage.
Skin Type: Great for all skin types.
Why I like it: This is a great everyday foundation. It literally glides on the skin and offers good coverage, while still looking like you don’t have a ton of makeup on. It also has a slight hint of vanilla- but not strong at all and not synthetic. It quickly dissipates after a while. Get your Crunchi Foundation here!
Formula: This foundation is a creamy liquid foundation.
How it looks on: It gives your skin a put together look but at the same time doesn’t look overdone or heavy.
Coverage: Provides light to medium coverage depending on how much you apply.
Skin Type: Great for all skin types, but especially those who have oily skin. Since this is oil free there’s no extra shine to worry about.
Why I like it: This foundation looks good on everyone, is easy to apply and can be found at most Whole Foods or health food stores. Plus, it’s budget friendly. A great all around pick! Get your Zuzu Luxe Oil Free Foundation here!

How it looks on: It looks dewy and natural but gives a pulled together look.
Coverage: Gives light to medium coverage.
Skin type: Great for all skin types, even those with acne. It has many healing properties that help soothe acne. If you do have oily skin, we recommend using a powder after application to help set it for the day since it is a very creamy formula.
Why I like it: This BB cream is so easy to apply and a great effortless look for everyday wear or in the summer when you want some coverage but don’t want to look overdone. Get your foundation here!
Root Pretty Pearlized Mineral Powder Foundation in G3.5
How it looks on: It has tiny light reflective pigments in it that help create a pearlized effect on the skin giving your face a glow.
Coverage: Light to medium to full coverage, depending on application. When used with a wet beauty blender the coverage is medium to full.
Skin Type: Any skin type. If you have dry skin just make sure and apply a moisturizer/oil beforehand, so you don’t have dry patches.
Why I like it: It stays the whole day when we use a damp beauty blender and almost gives us an air brushed look. It looks dewy compared to other powders we’ve used because of the pearlized light reflective pigments in it. Get your Root Pretty Powder here!
Formula: This feels like a very thin paint, almost like a paint thinner- I know sounds strange but the best way to describe it. It comes in a glass dropper bottle.
How it looks on: It looks very natural and dewy on. It will feel like you aren’t wearing foundation at all.
Coverage: It offers light to medium coverage.
Skin Type: This is great for any skin type. Although it is a liquid it dries more matte. So it’s good for oilier complexions or dry.
Why I like it: It creates such a natural flawless dewy look. You’ll feel like nothing is on your skin. It’s a lit from within glow. Plus, it offers a vitamin for your skin with all it’s nutrients. Always shake it up as the product can separate naturally. Get your Gressa Foundation here!

It’s so easy to apply too, feels like a really great tinted moisturizer but with solid coverage. Get your Ilia Foundation here!
Wearing Inika BB Cream
Inika BB Cream-
Formula: A very creamy consistency in a pump bottle.
How it looks on: It gives a dewy, natural look to the skin.
Skin Type: This is great for dry to combination skin types that don’t want a lot of coverage.
Why I like it: Although the formula is too light for me(I like at least a medium coverage foundation) I really like the consistency and the feel of the product. It doesn’t feel like you’re wearing anything and the ingredients are great. If you do like more of a medium to full coverage look you could always spot conceal where you don’t get enough coverage or you could try mixing your concealer with the bb cream. Get your BB Cream here!
Wearing Honest Beauty Foundation

Wearing W3ll People Bio Tint BB Cream
W3ll People BB Cream-
Formula: Feels creamy and thicker.
How it looks on: Looks natural and dewy.
Coverage: Light to medium.
Skin Type: All skin types.
Why I like it: This is a newer product within the last year for W3ll People. I like that it offers SPF30, some great protection, yet it doesn’t feel too heavy. Great for summer, but also if you live somewhere that’s constantly sunny and want sun protection in your foundation on the daily. I really appreciate that it is a little thicker and offers some decent coverage too. Get your BB Cream here!
Wearing Ilia True Skin Serum Organic Foundation in SF3 on the left and nothing on the right.
Ilia True Skin Serum Foundation-
Formula: Feels creamy and comes in a pump bottle.
How it looks on: Looks velvety and like your skin- very natural.
Coverage: Light to medium coverage.
Skin Type: All Skin Types.
Why I like it: I actually prefer this over Ilia’s Vivid Founation because it doesn’t feel greasy to me and the longevity is great. It is a liquid but then it sets after a while and you get a great long wearing foundation. It really feels and acts like your skin, yet I still feel like it gives my skin great coverage.
Wearing Inika Organic Liquid Foundation in Nude on the left and nothing on the right.
Formula: Feels creamy and more like a thicker lotion.
How it looks on: Looks dewy and soft on.
Coverage: Offers light to medium coverage.
Skin Type: Normal to dry skin types
Why I like it: The formula is so hydrating with hyaluronic acid. It feels like a cross between a great facial lotion and foundation. I like it better for me because it offers better coverage than the bb cream. This is great for those wanting a more hydrating liquid foundation with some decent coverage. I feel like I have a glow while wearing it!
Wearing Fitglow Vita Active Serum organic Foundation in VF2 on the left and nothing on the right.

Why I like it: This formula is so good. I’ve only been testing it for a week and debated whether or not to put it in the post but honestly even after a week of using it I love it! My skin looks so natural. It acts like your skin but covers up the redness, and imperfections- creating a smooth even canvas. I can’t stop wearing it! What I’m excited to see is how my skin improves from wearing it. It’s really a skin serum and foundation in one. Filled with skin healthy ingredients like vitamin C, seaweed brighteners, and beta carotene. It’s no surprise if your skin starts to look better after using it!
Wearing Kosas Tinted Face Oil on the left in 03 and 05-mixed together and nothing on the right.
Kosas Tinted Face Oil-
Formula: An oily paint thinner like feel more liquid feel then creamy- I know so weird but that’s an accurate description. 😉
How it looks on: Looks so natural and dewy. Very hydrated look.
Coverage: Light to medium coverage.
Skin Type: Normal to dry.
Why I like it: This is a new find for me and I’ve been loving how dewy it makes my skin feel. I thought I wouldn’t like it because I didn’t think it would offer enough coverage for me, but it actually gives a good amount of coverage. It makes my skin glow. I’v gotten so many compliments since wearing it! People always say my skin is glowing. I’ll take it!
Wearing Clove and Hollow Pressed Mineral Foundation in 04 on the left and nothing on the right.
Clove and Hollow Pressed Mineral Foundation-
Formula: A pressed powdered mineral foundation, very finely milled.
How it looks on: It looks so natural and soft. A light matte finish.
Coverage: It provides light to medium coverage.
Skin Type: Normal to oily.
Why I like it: It’s been hard to find a pressed powered foundation in green beauty. This one is nice because it is pressed but still feels light and airy on the skin. Also great to wear over liquid foundation to help set it. I love applying this to my oily eyelids too to help set them!
Wearing Alima Pure Satin Matte Foundation Powder in Neutral 2 on the left and nothing on the right.
Alima Pure Loose Mineral Powder Foundation-
Formula: A loose mineral powdered foundation- super fine powder.
How it looks on: This powder looks so lovely on. Very natural and velvety even though it’s a powder.
Coverage: Provides light to medium coverage.
Skin Type: Normal to oily.
Why I like it: Even though this is a loose powder foundation, it still doesn’t get messy. I just tap the powder into the cap and swirl the brush around and then apply the foundation. Doesn’t feel cakey or heavy for a foundation but light. The fish is flawless. For a powdered foundation this one is pretty great!
Wearing Inika Organic Pressed Baked Mineral Foundation in Patience on my left side and nothing on my right.
Inika Pressed Mineral Foundation-
Formula: A pressed mineral powdered foundation.
How it looks on: This powder looks so natural. Very lightweight, gives more of a mate finish.
Coverage: Provides light to medium coverage.
Skin Type: Normal to oily.
Why I like it: This is another pressed mineral powdered foundation that’s come on the scene. It’s feels feathery light and is a great powder to apply over liquid foundations. The coverage is lighter than Inika’s loose mineral foundation. A very soft look overall.
