What is the best non stick cookware that is non toxic?

What is the best non stick cookware that is non toxic?

There are so many non toxic cookware options out there.  Which is great because that means we can pick out what works best for us and our cooking needs.  However, I find a lot of people want to know what the best non toxic cookware option is that is non stick.  Having a non-stick option in your cupboards is so handy when you want to make certain dishes and I am going to share with you my favorites!

What toxins are lurking in traditional non-stick cookware?

Non-stick cookware may seem great initially but when you dig a little deeper it's easy to uncover the toxins lurking in them.  The most common nonstick cookware out there is Teflon. Teflon is the brand name of the chemical, non stick coating and it contains Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).  It's a popular choice for most people when it comes to cookware because it's non-reactive, non-stick and stain resistant. It basically is a cook's dream- that is until you read the fine print on the toxins it's releasing every time you cook with it!

Scary enough, 95% of non-stick pots and pans are made with Polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon).  (1)

While Teflon was first made using the chemical Perfluorooctanoic (PFOA) in the 1950's, they started adding Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) acid, or C8, to it to help alleviate some of the lumpiness from just using Perfluorooctanoic (PFOA).  However, this produced an even greater toxic substance overall.  It has been linked to many diseases, from cancer, liver disease, thyroid issues and growth issues.  I dive in deep in my Non Toxic Cookware post and share everything you need to know about Teflon and why it is a MUST to avoid.  Check out the post here!

My Top Picks For Non Stick, Non Toxic Cookware

Caraway Cookware

This is easily my #1 pick for anyone that wants a non toxic, non stick cookware set.  Caraway Cookware is such an easy transition for anyone looking to swap their traditional cookware. You won't miss your old toxic cookware at all with Caraway!  It's so easy to use and it's completely nonstick.  I haven't had any issues with food sticking to the ceramic pots or pans at all.  Even my husband was so impressed with the performance.  He couldn't get over how easy it was to use.  I've made ground beef, sausage, chicken, eggs, quesadillas, vegetable stir fry's and more.  I love the small fry pan for cooking eggs or quick one person meals.  The Sauce Pan I've used so much for sauces, oatmeal and pasta.  The Sauté Pan is great for cooking larger one pot meals, meat and stir fry's and the Dutch Oven is great for soups, chili, whole chickens and broth.  I really have used them all for different things and they work so well.

Another point I wanted to make is that Caraway Cookware doesn't feel quite as heavy as some other ceramic cookware I've had in the past.  They are sturdy but not too heavy.  I like being able to still lift the pan with one arm if I need too.  As with any ceramic cookware you want to make sure you use wooden, or silicone utensils on the pans, no stainless steel to prevent scratching.

I have been so happy with Caraway Cookware and the overall performance of their ceramic pots and pans.  Often you find a cookware and you love how it looks but not how it performs- Caraway does it all.  From the sleek design, to the amazing even cooking, easy cleanup and effortless storage- Caraway makes it easy to switch to nontoxic cookware without thinking twice!  Check out Caraway Cookware here.

The Always Pan

This is the newest ceramic cookware pan to me. The Always pan is so unique compared to anything else I've used in the past. It does so much and only requires one pan!

The Always Pan is coated in a non-toxic, ceramic non-stick coating.  That means no PFOA, PTFE, GenX chemicals or any other toxic chemicals for that matter!  Since it is tested to the standard of ceramic coating that means that NO heavy metals are able to pass through it.  Our Place takes it a step further and tests it to the standards of polymeric coating (this is a thin layered coating that provides superior adherence and protection from corrosion).  These standards mean that NOTHING can pass through their ceramic coating and that makes it the safest non-stick coating available!

Initially I wasn't even going to review The Always Pan as I had read where people were talking about it having lead.  I looked into it further and read Lead Safe Mama's full review on The Always Pan and how she had found traces of lead and several other heavy metals in it.  You can read about her findings here.  She wasn't able to determine if the trace amounts were in the actual coating or if they were in the substrate of the pan.  Meaning, once the coating wear's off you are left with the substrate.  Although they were in the safe range and technically at very low levels, she still had detected lead.  I think this is important for people to know and be aware of when making the best decision for them and their family.

Ok, now time to actually share what I thought of The Always Pan.  I really loved it!  It definitely lives up to the hype in my opinion.  It can do it all, from sauté, steam, boil, sear, fry- everything.  The goal of The Always Pan is to replace 8 pieces of cookware- so it makes cooking simpler.  It comes with a stainless steel steamer basket, a beachwood spatula, and a pourable spout.  It's also much lighter than a traditional ceramic pan coming in at 3lbs.  It's higher sides on the pan make it unique to other pans and easier cooking.  There really isn't anything I disliked about it- other than the lead findings!  😉  It works great for steaming veggies, cooking meat, tortillas- anything.  I think this would be a great addition for someone who hasn't made the switch over to nontoxic cookware or if you want to incorporate this into your overall nontoxic cookware options to try.  Check out The Always Pan here!

How To Use Waterless Cookware | Our Tips & Tricks

How To Use Waterless Cookware | Our Tips & Tricks

My Nontoxic Cookware post has been one of my most read posts on the blog and I know many of you are making the switch to detox out your cookware!  Unfortunately, I think it's easy to feel a little intimidated when it comes to cooking with some of the nontoxic options that are out there as you do have to change how you cook.  Specifically, using waterless cookware can be so different than what you are currently using to cook with. No worries…I am going to share all the tips and tricks for cooking with waterless cookware – specifically one of my favorite non toxic cookware brands 360 Waterless Cookware – so you can feel confident in investing in this awesome brand for your family!

*Affiliate Disclosure: I do have affiliate links in this blog post. If you purchase something from my link, I will receive a small commission from the sale.  This comes at no cost to you but is paid by the company.  I do not take becoming an affiliate with any company lightly.  If I am, it’s because I believe in the company and their product.

What is waterless cookware?

Waterless cookware uses a technology called Vapor Technology to cook your food at lower temperatures.  When you cook your food at lower temperatures you are not only increasing the flavors but protecting all the nutrients in the food.  Yielding higher nutrients in your cooked food once they're done. Not only does it heat your food at lower temperatures but it also does it quicker!  Yes, in this case you can have the best of both worlds.  You are cooking the food in it's own juices so you don't need the added oils, butters, etc like you would with other cookware.

The lids of 360 Cookware are specially designed to create a Vapor Seal that encapsulates the heat and moves it around the food to cook it.  Instead of overcooked, low nutrient food, with bland taste, you are left with nutrient dense flavorful food!  I can attest to the magic of waterless cookware after using 360 cookware myself- more on this brand in my full review here.  If you prefer to cook as you always have you can still do that with 360 Cookware too.  You don't have to use the waterless cookware method but once you learn it you won't want to go back!

Benefits of Waterless Cookware

Waterless cookware has definite benefits to its use.  First, and most importantly to me, is that by cooking without adding water and at a lower heat, this cooking style is able to maintain and protect the nutrients in the food.  If we are going to do the work to invest in organic vegetables, grass fed and finished meat, etc we want all those amazing nutrients in the foods to be available to our bodies when we eat them.  And with waterless cookware, they are more readily available than traditional cooking methods! (1)  Secondly, it requires no added oil, butter, etc.  Some say this is healthier due to less calories or fat being added into your food.  If it’s the right kind of fat that doesn’t bother me, but for some this may matter!  Thirdly, cooking with waterless cookware is more energy efficient.  Only low heat is used and some brands even work by sealing in the heat and turning off the stovetop once a certain level is reached.  Lastly, and certainly not least, when it comes to 360 Cookware, this is a true nontoxic cookware option.  No worries about crazy chemicals leaching into your food!  And they are so serious about being green, sustainable and eco-friendly. (2)

Waterless Cookware Methods

The directions for waterless cookware that I am going to share will be specific to the 360 Cookware, as it can vary slightly from brand to brand. Simply follow the directions below and you will know you will have nutrient dense, flavorful food made with nontoxic cookware!

  1. You will need to choose the right size pot or pan to use.  It will need to be at least ⅔ full of the food you are cooking.
  2. Use the correct size burner.  The burner should be approximately the same size as the diameter of the bottom of the pan you are using.
  3. Place the food in the correct size pan (that has been pre-heated) and place the cover on (the pre-heat is so important).
  4. After approximately 3-5 minutes you will note vapor coming out from beneath the cover.  At this point you will spin the cover and turn the burner to the low heat setting.  If the cover spins freely this is how you will know that the vapor seal has formed.  After a few minutes you will no longer note the vapor escaping beneath the lid and therefore the appropriate cooking temperature has been reached.
  5. Only remove the cover at the end of the cooking time to check that what you are cooking is done.  If it isn't done you will need to add 1-2 tablespoons of water and return the heat setting to medium.  You will then repeat step #4.

Seems simple enough!  But I will say that it will take a couple tries to figure out your settings on your stovetop.  I will also share some tips and tricks I have picked up along the way that will make your waterless cookware so much easier to use!

  1. Fresh fruits and veggies have enough moisture in them naturally that you won't need to add any further water.  This definitely seems so strange, but it's true!  What you will want to do is put the fruit/veggie in the appropriate sized pot.  Cover it in water, and then pour the water back off.  That small amount of moisture will be enough for most.  Meats will also typically only require their own juices to cook in.  Only add oils/fats if the recipe requires it.
  2. Once you have your pan set to low/medium for 3-5 minutes then you can test the pan to see if it's hot enough by dropping some water in the pan.  If it splatters it's not hot enough, but if the drops of water bead up and dance across the pan you know it's hot enough.
  3. When cooking using 360 Cookware if you note that vapor continues to escape the pot (in Step #2 from above), you have a heat setting too high and you will need to reduce the heat
  4. Also, when cooking and checking for the vapor seal, if the cover doesn't spin freely and is locked in place that tells you the heat setting is too low and you will need to the raise the heat so the lid will loosen.
  5. Avoid lifting the cover when cooking as this will let the heat and moisture out.
  6. While these pans are very durable, you will still want to take great care of them so they will last you for years to come!
    • Do not clean with Chlorine Bleach, rather use water and a non abrasive stainless steel cleaner to make a paste (can be as simple as using baking soda as the cleaner).
    • Avoid hitting the the rims of the cookware with metal kitchen utensils.
    • Do not cut or chop in the pan.
    • Don't allow undissolved salt to remain in the pan for longer periods.
    • Don't allow acidic or seasoned food to remain in the pan for long periods.

Trust me, once you get the hang of waterless cookware you will love it!  You can check out all of 360 Waterless Cookware here.  Share with me below, what do you think of cooking with waterless cookware?

My Top Natural and Organic Products at Target

My Top Natural and Organic Products at Target

Sharing my top natural and organic products at Target! I am often asked what natural products can be found and accessed more easily than ordering on-line.  Of course if you love Target as much as I do, then you know you can find affordable and clean products there!  I decided it was time I put together my Top 10 Natural Products that you can pick up at your local Target store.  Even better, I have created a shopping list you can take with you that includes 100+ Natural/Clean Finds at Target.  With this list in hand, you can feel confident you are buying only the best for you and your family!

What is Target Clean?

Target Clean is used as a standard for products that don’t include certain toxic chemicals in their formulations. An icon is used to represent the products that meet these standards and can be found on-line and in store.

Target Clean Icon.

Based on what category you are shopping in (beauty, cleaning products, household essentials, baby, etc) the excluded chemicals will vary.  Specifically with beauty, the following chemicals won’t be included in those products that are considered Target Clean:

  • Propyl-parabens
  • Butyl-parabens
  • Phthalates
  • Formaldehyde
  • Formaldehyde-donors
  • nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs)
  • Oxybenzone
  • SLES
  • retinyl palmitate
  • Hydroquinone
  • Triclosan
  • Triclocarban
  • BHA
  • BHT

While I love that Target is making an effort to inform the consumer, don’t just blindly follow this standard.  Just because a product fits Target's standards doesn't mean it will meet yours!  That's why I am sharing my top 10 must have natural and clean living finds at Target below.  But hold on, I didn’t stop there.  I also made a whole shopping guide for you so you know EXACTLY what you want to purchase (or stay away from) to support your natural living lifestyle.  I include in this guide natural and clean products in Beauty, Baby, Food, Kitchen, Feminine Products and Household.  I even made up a wallet sized shopping guide so you can easily keep this available for your shopping trip!

Fave natural beauty mascara!

1) Honest Beauty Extreme Length 2-in-1 Mascara and Lash Primer

If you have been around for any sort of time you shouldn’t be surprised to find this mascara at the top of my list.   This is hands down my favorite natural mascara in clean beauty currently.  I know that says a lot but it’s true.  The formula checks all the boxes.  It offers thickness, length, separation- it’s just awesome!  The formula isn’t too dry or too wet and I love that I don’t have to apply 5 coats of mascara to see product on my lashes.  In just two coats my lashes are instantly lengthened, thicker and have overall more volume.  I’m sold!  On one end of the mascara wand is a primer and the other the mascara color.  I apply the primer first and then the mascara.  Plus, it's super budget friendly! You will not regret picking up this mascara! Get it here.

W3ll People makeup!

2) W3LL People Makeup

W3ll People was one of the first green beauty brands on the scene years ago.  It makes me so happy to see a brand like this in Target.  They have 35+ EWG-verified products.  W3LL People is committed to the highest standard for ingredients, health and safety.  They are also on a mission to be “easily accessible to all, ensuring more people have the ability to choose clean and be well.” (1)  And with access to their products every time you go to Target, they are hitting their mission out of the park!

I have featured so many of their products on my blog.  Check out their concealer in my Best Natural Beauty Concealers.  Their eyeshadow palettes I love and have written about in multiple blog posts.  They come in a palette with 5 different eyeshadow colors.  I love that they have matte and shimmer shadows in them.  Sometimes I'm feeling matte and sometimes I want something a little more pumped up. It has basics for everyday wear or for kicking it up later on. A great palette to take you from day to night.  PLUS, these palettes are so budget friendly!  You get an entire eyeshadow palette for $19.99 at Target!  I also reviewed their mascara in my Natural Mascara Guide And these are just a few of their products available at Target.  You can also get tinted moisturizer, foundation stick, pressed powder foundation, stick blush, lipstick and the list goes on!  Check out W3ll People Makeup products here.

This is our favorite natural diaper rash cream!

3) Honest Diaper Rash Cream

I find it essential to choose only the best for my babies.  Especially when applying a product directly on their sensitive skin. Unfortunately many conventional diaper rash creams can contain some less than stellar ingredients not limited to:

  • Fragrance
  • Petrolatum
  • Potassium Hydroxide
  • Dimethicone
  • BHA
  • Methyparaben

Honest Diaper Rash Cream I have found to be so good.  When my babies have needed it, it really soothes rashes and redness.  Plus, there are times when you run out and need it ASAP.  You may not have time to place an order on-line, so this can be picked up at your local Target.  Get it here!

OEKO-TEX Blankets at Target!

4) OEKO-TEX Blankets and Throw Pillows

I’ve gotten so many blankets and throws from Target and even bedspreads!  They have so many OEKO-TEX options.  OEKO-TEX is the world's leading textile processing authority for organic fibers.  The certification is the toughest organic textile standard because it goes far beyond verifying just the organic farming process.  It also includes every step of manufacturing and ensures there is no child or slave labor. And, it means the final product was made using pure and clean standards so you can have peace of mind when purchasing anything with this label.  I know when I buy OEKO-TEX blankets and throw pillows at Target not only am I getting a great quality product, but I am also getting it at a great price!  Get the blankets here and the throw pillows here!

5) Threshold Organic Cotton Sheets

That’s right…even Target has options for 100% cotton sheets that meet the highest standards for organic textiles!  This means a really great budget option for those that want better quality bed sheets, but aren’t wanting to fork out the price tag that can come with some of the more luxury options.  Target has 100% cotton sheets that are Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX certified and GOTS certified. Love that organic cotton sheets are so easily accessible and even priced right!  I even included them in my blog post Organic Cotton Sheets.  We've had a set for years and love them.Get them here!

Genexa's Allergy Care.

6) Genexa Products

I have definitely fallen for this clean medicine brand as of lately and I love that it can be found at Target. What makes Genexa stand apart is that, unlike other medicine brands, their inactive ingredients are actually clean and therefore don’t come with potential unwanted side effects themselves.  Inactive ingredients are the ingredients in the medicine that determine taste, texture and stability.  From their Kid’s Allergy products to their Kid’s Pain and Fever, they offer so many great options when it comes to medicine but without the artificial additives.  They also offer homeopathic remedies for those that are looking for something more like that!  Read all about Genexa in my recent blog post.  Check out the Genexa products here!

Love my Lodge Cast Iron Skillet!

7) Lodge Cast Iron Pan

This is the cast iron pan I have and love.  It was actually the first type of nontoxic cookware that I switched over too.  It really has been around forever and that's one of the reasons I love it.  It does take a little bit of time to get used to it but once you've worked with it you can definitely figure it out. Plus, Lodge Cast Iron is so budget friendly too!  I use this pan for cooking eggs, veggies, frying- really the list is endless.  A couple tips when using cast iron:

  1.  Make sure and slowly add heat.  I found this works best instead of blasting the food with heat.  It helps to not burn food.  Cast iron retains heat very well.
  2. Make sure you season it regularly. This helps to create a type of natural non-stick surface.  If you're unsure how to season it, The Wellness Mama did a whole blog post on it here.  When you season a cast iron it's basically adding a good oil to keep it hydrated and then baking it.
  3. I avoid cooking acidic foods in cast iron because it can break down the seasoning or patina that's been made on the cast iron.
  4. Cleaning cast iron can seem intimidating at first, but it's actually not.  You don't want to use soap with cast iron- it can damage the seasoning and dry it out.  Instead, use some salt to clean it.  I just shake salt on top and then take a scrubby and scrub away.  Then rinse with water, allow it to dry and rub in a cooking oil.

So inexpensive and you don’t have to worry about crazy chemicals leaching into your food.   Check out my Best Non Toxic Cookware posts for all the details on the Lodge Cast Iron Pan and my other favorite non toxic cookware options!  Check it out here.

8) Vital Farms Pastured Eggs

I just love that I can find good quality eggs so easily.  And, we love these eggs!  You can tell a huge difference in the quality of a pastured egg the minute you break it open.  The yolk is so orange and vibrant!  And if you aren’t sure why you might want to spend a little more and purchase eggs from pastured hens, a study from Pennsylvania University showed that:

“pastured eggs contained 38% more Vitamin A, two times as much Vitamin E, more than two times the omega-3 fatty acids, less than half the Omega-6 to omega-3 ratio compared to non pastured eggs” (2)

Check out Vital Farms Pastured Eggs here!

Love these clean salad dressings from Primal Kitchen!

9) Primal Kitchen Salad Dressings

If you haven’t heard of Primal Kitchen, let me tell you a bit about them.  This brand started with a goal of creating the world’s best-tasting, real-food pantry staples, starting with a mayonnaise made with avocado oil.  Have you ever looked at a label for a salad dressing or mayonnaise?!  They are stocked full of inflammatory oils.  So to say I was so excited when I saw these there not too long ago is an understatement.  We always have these on hand.  I love the Ranch and Caesar.  They have super clean ingredients and NO inflammatory oils like canola oil or sunflower oil.  What a better option to top that healthy salad or for your kiddos to dip their carrots in;)  Check out the dressings here!

10) Chosen Foods Avocado Oil

I love this oil and always keep it on hand because it’s cold pressed and naturally refined- meaning there are no chemicals or solvents used in the process. It has a high smoke point too which makes it great for cooking (up to 500 degrees!).  And if you haven’t used avocado oil before, it has a neutral flavor profile so you can easily use it for so many different things  From high-heat sautéing and flame grilling, to dressing your salad, grains and pasta salads it is so diverse and so easy to get when you know you can pick it up on your next Target run!  Check it out here.
