7 Tips To Living Healthy As A Busy Mom

7 Tips To Living Healthy As A Busy Mom

Sharing my 7 tips to living healthy as a busy mom!  Have you ever felt like living healthy in the 21st century is challenging?  We all have our reasons right?  It might be you don’t have time to cook, you can’t find time to exercise or take some time in the morning to pray, meditate or just be still.  Whatever it may be, we all know when we are feeling our best and taking control of our health and when we aren’t.

Over the past month I’ve even felt like I don’t measure up!  Being pregnant with my third baby has definitely thrown it’s curve balls when it comes to healthy living.  I’ve had weeks in the first trimester where I barley cooked because I was vomiting and so nauseous that the thought of cooking anything repulsed me.  I’ve had moments where I just wanted pizza and not a salad.  Days where I’m so tired the idea of going for a walk sounded like a half marathon.  Trust me, I’ve been there!

Having kids can definitely change things up.  Your plans don’t always go as “planned” and you’re often feeling like how does everyone do “ALL” the things.  I mean I even I think that and I’m a natural lifestyle blogger?  I know as a mom it’s really made me prioritize what’s most important and what can wait when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle.  Because at the end of the day, there’s only 24 hours in a day and I can’t do it all!

When your single or even just married life can often look a little different.  I know it did for me.  I didn’t have to plan as much, could do things when I wanted and things didn’t pop up as much as they do now with kids.  Any other mom remember those days?

I know as a mom it’s really made me prioritize what’s most important and what can wait when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle.

I realized if I feel like I’m running the rat race when it comes to healthy living at times, how much more are other moms?!

As much as I want to sauna, fix the perfect instagram worthy meal everyday, have my house in immaculate condition, exercise, practice prayer or meditation, do red light therapy, fix my kids the perfect healthy meals…sometimes it just doesn’t all happen.  I’m human, and I’m reminded daily by 2 little girls and a growing babe in my belly.

Does that mean I throw in the towel and think this healthy lifestyle isn’t for me?

Not at all!  I’ve learned flexibility is key and planning when it comes to life with kids now.  There’s also lots of seasons as kids grow and you just have to learn how to pivot.

I wanted to share 7 tips to living a healthy life as a busy mom that have really made such a difference in my own life.  I want to fully embrace the season I am in and these babies I’ve been blessed with!  I love knowing I can teach them healthy habits and have them grow up living them out for themselves, their family and the environment.

I also realized if healthy living is going to happen in the homes, it’s usually up to the mamas!  We hold so much power and can shape how our family operates and lives everyday.  For example, I know if I cook healthy food that’s what my hubs will eat!  I’m sure it goes for most of your husbands too.  We women often set the tone.

I want to arm you with some tips that helped me so much and have shifted my mindset when it comes to creating a healthy lifestyle as a busy mom.  These tips have saved me time, money, and stress.

I hope they help you as much as they’ve helped me!

7 tips to healthy living as a busy mom

Living healthy as a busy mom doesn’t have to be hard or complicated. With these tips I’ve learned it can be fun and enjoyable!

1. Plan ahead-

I feel like you’re all looking at me going, “Yeah, I’ve heard that a thousand times!”  Ok, well my question then is are you practicing it?  It’s so easy to hear something but not actually put it into action.  PLANNING, will literally change your life!  Imagine what it would look like if you didn’t plan out your meals for the week.  When it’s time to eat breakfast lunch or dinner, instead of feeling prepared and able to pull something out of the fridge you scramble last minute to throw something together. The end result is it’s not that healthy, maybe it ends up being takeout, a trip to the grocery store where you spend more money, or eating cereal for dinner.  The point is you end up frazzled, not well fed and having spent more money than you wanted.  Not cool, right?!  So what if you took 30 minutes each week and planned your meals.  30 minutes!  That’s it.  You plan out breakfast, lunch and dinner and snacks if you need them.  You take your list to the grocery store and you get everything you need.  You then take an hour or two and prep one day.  Wouldn’t that make life SO much easier?  I know it does for me.  We all know what happens to kids when 5 O’Clock rolls around…they turn into hungry hippos and the last thing any mom wants to do is try to come up with some healthy meal amidst whining and crying.

Planning also comes into play for exercise.  If you don’t plan it into your schedule the likelihood of it happening is slim to none.  Penciling in when you’re going to get some activity into your day is crucial for actually seeing it happen.  Right down what your going to do, and tell someone.  You’re so much more likely to actually do it if someone else knows.

Planning your life as a family in general.  Do you ever feel like your kids are in too many activities, and you’re just running around with your head cut off?  A lot of times it might seem necessary to have your kids in every activity but really it might not be.  Both my hubs and I have realized we don’t want to live a taxi service lifestyle.  I definitely want my kids involved in sports but I also don’t want to feel stressed out all the time, overwhelmed and not having any family time.  For each family it will look different, but I challenge you to take an inventory of all your extracurricular activities.  Maybe one activity per season is doable but is three?  Think about what seems manageable and enjoyable for your family.  Every situation is different so do what feels best for you and your family.

green smoothie

One of my secret weapons to living out a holistic lifestyle? Green Smoothies!

2. Drink a smoothie a day-

This one might seem odd but it literally has changed my life.  You might be thinking why a smoothie?  Well, for one it’s easy.  I can prep all my smoothie ingredients, have them in the freezer or fridge and then just pop them in the blender in the morning.  Easy peasy!  Then I can take it with me on the go to work, dropping off the kids etc.  I love knowing that I’m getting a nutrient dense breakfast but on the go.  It’s one less meal to have to think about making beforehand too.  I make a smoothie for my hubs and I every morning and then in the summer months I make them for my girls for lunch.

I wrote and entire smoothie blog post all about what I put in my smoothies and why.  I even have recipes to my favorite smoothies.  This isn’t just a sugar smoothie, it’s full of healthy fats, fiber, protein and veggies.  You’ll be full until lunch and satisfied.  Check out the blog post here!  Also, if you want to make it even easier for yourself, you can subscribe to Smoothie Box!  It’s an all organic smoothie box that takes the guesswork out of making health smoothies.  The smoothies come in prepackaged bags and all you have to do is add it to a blender with liquid and blend away.  Check out Smoothie Box here!

3. Wake up before your kids-

Another serious game changer.  I used to not wake up before my kids and really made my days so much harder.  Instead of feeling prepped and ready for the day, I felt like I was thrown into the fire without any protection.  Ok, a little extreme but you get what I’m saying.  When I give myself time have a slow morning and do something for me right away my whole day goes better.  I have more patience for my kids, I’m able to think a little more clearly, and make better decisions  In the end, it always leads to a healthier life.

For me it’s getting up and having some quiet time reading, listening to a podcast or working out.  Then I’m able to get breakfast on the table for my kids, make my smoothies and even throw in a load of laundry.  Things just flow so much smoother when I allow myself a little “me” time before the kiddos come on the scene.  Even if it’s only 30 minutes I challenge you to get up just a little earlier.  I promise it will make such a difference in your day!

Vitacost Faves

Vitacost saves me every month! Love this natural online shopping center!

4. Shop online-

I know this might sound counterintuitive to going green but hear me out.  A lot of the companies I support are small companies trying to make it in this big world.  Not only does shopping online save me a lot of time as a busy mom but it also gives me a chance to support smaller companies I might not.  For instance I love shopping on Etsy!  It’s one of my favorites for finding thoughtful and unique gifts for friends and family.  I also buy online from a lot of local Seattle companies.  I live an hour south of Seattle so being able to still support some of my favorite jewelers is awesome.  I also get my pastured meat from a small company in California.  I love knowing the quality is amazing but that they ship directly to me!  Saves this mama so much time.

A few other stores I love shopping at are Vitacost for healthy organic dry goods- I have a whole blog post on my favorites here.  I also love Amazon for convenience- and all the moms said AMEN!  I have a whole Amazon blog post on all my favorites I get from them here.  Just having things delivered when living out a healthy lifestyle helps me a ton.  I’m able to spend more time making a decent meal for my family, spending time outdoors and just not stressing about driving here and there.  They even have so many grocery delivery services now where you can order online and then have it delivered to your house!  Take a little off your plate and start living out your healthy life, instead of feeling like you’re running around with your head cut off to 10 different stores.

7 tips to healthy living as a busy mom

Involving your family in activities makes living healthy so much more doable!

5. Make it a family activity-

It’s easy to want to compartmentalize everything but unfortunately that just isn’t reality once you have kids.  An example of this is when I want to exercise.  I’ve realized sometimes it means including my girls.  Whether that’s playing with them outside, going for a walk as a family or even a bike ride.  It might not look like an hour at the gym.

My brother and sister in law are a perfect example of this.  They have 5 kids- yes I said 5!  They had twin girls last year.  But guess what?   It didn’t stop them from getting working out.  They were creative in making it a family activity.  They would put the twins in a double bob stroller, walk and run with them, while the other girls would ride their bikes or scooter.  They also set up a garage gym, so they didn’t have to go anywhere to get in a workout.  They saved time by doing this and were able to show their kids the importance of staying active.

Same thing when it comes to being in the kitchen.  I got my 5 year old a kid safe knife set so she can help me when I’m in the kitchen. Instead of having me make meals by myself she can now get involved.  The more involved she is in preparing the food the more she learns about how real food is made.  When you make things a family affair you may have to get a little creative but I promise it will be worth it!

6. Don’t compare-

Sounds easier said then done.  Trust me I get it but it’s so worth it.  How many times are you scrolling through Instagram and you see a photo of a someone with a picture perfect life and you start thinking I can’t live that way.  Looks impossible.  They’re so healthy, look at the meals they make, wow they’re house is always clean and they have the perfect body.  Come on, we’ve all been there.  But what you might not have seen is that the person you’re comparing yourself too actually is a work in progress too, like us all.  Remember no life is perfect, even if it looks that way.

If you need to stop unfollowing people in order to get a right mindset, do it!  Your life is amazing and awesome and if you truly don’t feel like it is, then do something about it.  Start implementing one of these tips today and I know you’ll see a difference within the month.  Small changes add up over time.  I have learned to embrace my life, flaws and all.  I love my kids and hubs and the messy life we’ve created.  It’s not perfect but that’s ok, we’re human.   Stop comparing and start loving your own life!  Healthy living doesn’t look the same for everyone.

7. Say NO-

This one is so good and needed more than ever in our society!  Have you ever felt like you literally are a taxi service for your kids?  Or that you are constantly stressed out?  Maybe you have to stay up so late every night just to get all the things done.  It could be that every weekend you have some sort of family function, birthday party, or sporting event to go to.  Sound familiar?  I know I’ve been there.  I’ve said yes to so many things that I literally end up running myself into the ground and getting sick.  Do you know it’s ok to say no?  Yes, you can say no and your friends won’t hate you(I mean if they do, are they even your friends), you’ll still have a life and you’ll still have fun.  When you say no to things it puts you in control of your life instead of someone else.

I find when we say no, we aren’t rushing around but enjoying one another’s company, playing outside more and just being together as a family.  When your gone all the time it doesn’t lend itself to a healthy lifestyle.  You won’t have time to prep food, cook, or even have a normal routine.  They say that adults thrive off of routine as much as children do.  When you can get in a rhythm of life your body thanks you.  When I know I’m home for the week I can get my workout in, make healthy meals, eat together as a family- all things that breath health into my life.  Sometimes it might be hard saying no to all the invitations but at the end of the day you’re really saying yes to your health!

Do you implement any of these tips into your life?  What tips have helped you as a busy mom live a healthier life?

HOME-

sol organics review

This organic summer down comforter is the perfect temperature for my husband and I.

Smoothie Box

I’ve fallen hard for Smoothie Box!  They offer organic, low sugar smoothies made with veggies and fruits and collagen for protein.  They taste amazing and make drinking a smoothie everyday super easy.  Trust me, if you’ve been struggling to eat a good breakfast, lunch, even dinner, get Smoothie Box!  This weekend they’re offering $20 off your first box!  Get your Smoothie Box here!

Berkey

I’ve had the Berkey water filter for many years and I’m super happy with the performance.  It removes bacteria and parasites, heavy metals like lead and mercury, VOCs and toxic chemicals like benzene, chlorine and chromium-6, pesticides, pharmaceutical drugs and more, to levels higher than 99.99%.  The water sits in a stainless steel container on your counter.  When you buy the Berkey water filter you get the black purification elements with it but you have to buy the fluoride filters separately.  The fluoride filters also filter out arsenic too.  Obviously I would recommend buying the fluoride filters!  I have both and have been happy with their performance.  All their Bundles are on sale this weekend!  Get a Berkey here!

Almond Cow

This is another gadget that I really thought would be unnecessary but I’ve come to love!  It makes creating nut milk so easy.  When I stopped drinking dairy milk I quickly was thrown into the world of non-dairy milks.  When I realized there wasn’t great options to buy I knew I would need to start making my own.  This makes it so easy!  Just add the nuts and water- push a button and then poof!  You’ve got nut milk!  I can’t recommend it enough.  Use Code: GURLGONEGREEN for $15 off.  Shop Almond Cow here.

White Lotus Home

Looking for a nontoxic organic mattress?  Maybe organic pillows?  Well look no further- White Lotus Home is your go to store!  I have their pillows for our whole family and we all love them.  You can choose from so many varieties- kapok, latex, organic cotton and more.  Our personal favorites are the latex and the kapok.  My daughter also has their twin Organic Cotton and Wool Foam Dreamton Mattress.  Free of harsh chemicals and fire retardants.  We love it!  Use coupon code: GGG for 20% off your order!  Shop all of White Lotus Home here!

SOL Organics

I love my SOL Organics sheets and comforter.  Sheets are one of the worst offenders when it comes to chemicals.  When you think of how much you sleep the toxic load adds up.  Getting organic sheets was a must for my family and I.  I also love their down comforters.  It’s filled with 100% Canadian White Down, that’s responsibly grown and harvested.  It is also 100% GOTS cotton down proof.  It has an even fill and is hypoallergenic.  I love how it lays flat and even, something that my last didn’t do.   We have the summer down, since we tend to run warm at night.  Use GGG25 for 25% off!  Shop all of SOL Organics here!

Road Trip Essentials

Road Trip Essentials

I’m back and sharing my road trip essentials with you!  If you didn’t know I took a road trip with my hubs and two girls throughout California for the last two weeks.  It was so fun!  I’ll be creating a natural California guide with you highlighting all my favorite hot spots from real food, to hotels and lodging- stay tuned.

But for now I wanted to share how I travel and what road trip essentials I bring with me.  This could help you even if you’re not road tripping but just traveling in general.  I have so many tips in here for moms especially!  Because when you’re traveling with two small kids you definitely want to be prepared.

I’m going to share the snacks we brought, the products, games/activities, and other random stuff that we didn’t bring that I wished we would have.

Since summer is just around the corner this is the perfect time to start thinking about travel essentials!

Road Trip Essentials

This sunscreen not only is super convenient with it’s spray form but also works so well!

Products

I’m all about products that perform and these were essentials on this trip!

Beautycounter Travel Set- I brought this travel set along from Beautycounter and it was awesome!  I can’t recommend it enough.  It has a little of everything.  It includes a hand soap, body cream, body wash, and bar soap.  It was great because my hubs loves a bar soap and I love body wash.  Plus, it’s so convenient having the smaller sizes of bottles.  Once the body wash is gone I’ll just refill it with more body wash.  If you’re traveling soon you need this set!  Get it here!

Rahua Shampoo Set- I love having smaller bottles for my shampoo and conditioner.  Rahua has great shampoo and conditioner travel sets.  I love their volumizing shampoo and conditioner.  But they also have one for color treated hair and normal hair.  My hair feels clean and not weighed down.  Been using them for years.  Snag them here!

Beautycounter Sunscreen- Ok, have you tried this stuff?  It’s kind of amazing.  I’ve tried a lot of sunscreens and this one just delivers.  It doesn’t feel heavy or greasy, sprays on white but blends in as you rub it in and blocks blue light- something that we should all be considering with the new research coming out about blue light.  We went through two bottles on our trip!  That’s how much we loved it.  And guess what?!  Beautycounter just came out with a tinted version too.  Can you say awesome!  So now you not only get sunscreen protection but also a little tint with it as well.  It comes in light medium or medium dark.  If you want a noticeable difference I would go with the medium dark.  Check out the sunscreen here!

Beautycounter After Sun Cooling Gel- Planning on going somewhere warm this summer?  Then you’ll need this!  Seriously with the amount of time my kids spend in the pool aloe of some kind is always needed.  Unfortunately all the conventional brands have a ton of other chemical additives in the product.  Not Beautcounter, you’re just getting the pure stuff!  Grab an After Sun Cooling Gel here!

road trip essentials

Hanging with my girl at Cafe Gratitude! One of our favorite restaurants in southern California.

Josh Rosebrook Advanced Hydration Mask-  If you’re like me and have dry skin already, then being in the sun all day can really suck all the moisture out of you.  I love this mask!  This one by Josh Rosebrook is great at adding hydration back into the skin.  You can leave it on even overnight for intense hydration.  It goes on like almost a thick frosting and just melts into your skin. I leave it on for 15 minutes and when I take it off my skin feels so hydrated! You don’t remove it with water either but just a dry cloth-helps retain the moisture! Dare I say fine lines look a little less fine if you know what I mean!  A great skin treat after you’ve been in the sun. Snag it here!

Luna Rose and Honey Mask- I love this mask!  Perfect for when your skin needs a little pick me up post swimming or after sun.  It makes my skin glow in minutes- no joke!  It apply it all over in the morning and then grab my toothbrush and then rinse off once I’m done brushing my teeth.  It feels so hydrating and soothing to the skin.  It gives a slight exfoliation too with herbal grains.  The raw honey in this mask draws moisture to the skin while soaking up all the excess oils at the same time.  What I love is that this mask can be used daily as a cleanser or as a mask a couple times a week.  It really lives up to it’s name: Glowing Mask.  I promise you won’t be disappointed!  I can’t get enough of this decadent skin treat!  Oh and did I mention it’s only $30?  Get your mask here! Use coupon code: GURLGONEGREEN for 20% off!

Beautycounter Dew Skin- I wore this everyday on vacation! I was wearing makeup but it didn’t feel like it.  It’s light and airy.  If I felt like I needed some concealer I would just add a little under my nose or eyes with their concealer pen.  I love that it has spf 20 in it.  I put this on, plus wear a hat if I’m outside all day.  I wear the shade #2.  Check out all the colors here!

Primally Pure Deodorant- Yes, this deodorant made the cut even in 95 degree weather!  It works and works so well.  I can’t stop talking about it.  It’s that good.  My hubs loves the charcoal one and I love the blue tansy- let’s be honest though I would totally use the charcoal one too- love me some mint!  I have had no irritation at all.  Get it here!

Primally Pure Baby Oil- Since being pregnant with baby I’ve been rubbing this body oil all over belly and body.  I love knowing it’s safe to use during pregnancy, plus extremely hydrating.  My hubs can’t get enough of this either- I guess you could say it’s a family fave!  Get it here!

Primally Pure Baby Balm- I’ve also been using this baby balm exclusively on my growing belly this pregnancy.  It feels so good and extra moisturizing for my stretching skin.  I also loved using this on my girls during our trip.  I loved knowing that it was safe for me and them!  One less product to bring just for them.  Snag it here!

Aila Nail Polish- If you’ve followed me for a hot minute you know this is hands down my favorite nail polish.  It works so well!  The colors are so pretty too and it stays.  For the trip I bought a new color called California Love- perfect for our California trip.  I have to say it’s quickly becoming my fave for this spring and summer.  It just screams sun!  Get it here!

Aila Nail Polish Wipes- These are a must when I travel.  They are cloths that come in pre-packaged squares and are perfect for on the go.  No smiling the nail polish remover, no needing to bring a cotton round, you have everything you need in one little pouch- can’t recommend them enough!  Get them here!

Beautycounter Mattifying Powder- I just got this product a month ago and didn’t realize how much I would end up using it!  Especially on our trip.  It’s amazing because it literally keeps my makeup in place ALL day!  I’m talking through sweat, warm weather, pool time, my makeup still looked just as good as when I applied it.  This would be great especially if you live somewhere warm and humid- get it you’ll be so glad.  Check it out here!

Road trip essentials

These lip sheers are the perfect lippy for spring and summer!

Beautycounter Lip Sheers- This is another product I wore every single day- yes- every single day!  This is the ideal lip formula for spring/summer and on vacations in my opinion.  It is moisturizing- check, it gives a subtle hint of sheen or gloss- check and gives a little color pigment but nothing dramatic- check.  Basically hits all the marks.  I was wearing poppy all trip.  With a little tan from the sun this color just is everything!  Check out all the colors here!

Follain Hand Soap- I love bringing my own hand soap places.  Conventional hand soaps contain a ton of ingredients I avoid.  From fragrance, to sulfates, PEG’s and even triclosan.  Follain has a cute travel friendly version of their everything soap.  It comes in this 1 oz. glass pump bottle and you can easily refill it each trip.  I love knowing I’m not exposing myself to toxins!  Get it here!

Snacks

Ok, food is just as important when you’re traveling and all the moms said yes and amen!  Having two kids I wanted to make sure I came prepared with snacks and being pregnant too, especially if we couldn’t find anywhere decent to eat at.  I wanted healthy options at hand.  I just bring a cooler with me and some ice packs.  Most hotels have mini fridges and I’ll just freeze the ice packs each night.  I really like Whole foods Coolers.  I have several of them and they’re so easy to clean!

Hummus Packs- We get these from Costco and love them.  They’re organic and come with just a few simple ingredients.  They’re great for dipping veggies, plantain chips or eating with some turkey meat.  I like that they have a little protein too!

Muffins- I like making some healthy muffins for the trip.  This time I has made some paleo banana muffins.  They’re just sweetened with bananas and are great for a snack or in the morning for a quick breakfast.  I really like Paleo Running Mama’s recipes!

road trip essentials

As you can see we had no fun on vacation!

Perfect Kid’s Bars- These are smaller and great for the girls.  I like that they’re a little more filling than an average granola bar.  I don’t let them have these all the time but on road trips they’re a decent whole food choice. Get them here!

BHU Bars- I discovered these bars about a month ago and love them! They’re low in sugar and high in protein and fat.  Plus, they’re organic and contain real food ingredients.  Loved having these on hand for the trip.  Check them out here!

Organic Fruit- I brought some blueberries, bananas, and apples on the trip with us.  The girls love fruit and it’s not really messy either in the car making this mama happy!

DIY Trail Mix- I love making my own trail mix.  Most trail mixes are loaded with inflammatory oils and tons of sugar.  Making your own is fun and is free from all the bad stuff.  I love putting mine in a reusable Stasher bag.  I like adding macademia nuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, goji berries, and lily’s chocolate chips(sweetened with just stevia.  Sometimes I’ve toasted some coconut and added that too.  My hubs loves it too! I like getting some of my nuts from Trader Joe’s and Amazon

Plantain Chips- I love getting Terra’s plantain chips in the salty version.  They only have 3 ingredients, plantains, coconut oil and salt.  Plantains actually promote a healthy gut with their resistant starch too.  They satisfy that salty craving but without having a conventional chip.  Get them here!

Guacamole Packs- Wholly Guacamole has these awesome organic guac packs just like the hummus packs.  They have all clean ingredients and are so clutch when you need some good healthy fat.  Great for dipping veggies or plantain chips in.

Organic Cheese and Turkey- These are great for travel as well.  You can get organic turkey at Costco and Organic Grass-fed cheese at Trader Joes.  It’s great for the girls when they need something more than just fruit or another bar.

Nut Butter Packs- These are a great quick protein.  I love eating these with an apple or banana.  Helps to fill me up and also slow down the sugar rush in the body with the added fat protein.  I like these ones!

Dr. John’s Suckers You bet I had something up my sleeve for when my kids were at the end of their rope!  These Dr. John Suckers are free of sugar, and artificial dyes and tasty!  I get the large variety bag from Amazon!

Smart Sweets- I also brought some Smart Sweets with us.  These little gummies are so good and sugar free as well as artificial dye free.  You can get them in bulk on Amazon and then you have these little packets.  My girls love them!  Check them out here!

road trip essentials

These two have my heart!

Random Things

There are so many random things I brought with me too or wish I would have in hindsight.  These don’t fit into a category other than random- so random it is!

Activated Charcoal- I didn’t bring this with me but I wished I would have especially with the random bug that Finley and Gracie ended up getting.  Not that we couldn’t have gone to the store but sometimes there just isn’t a close option and it’s nice to have something really close. I was even thinking it would be good for eating out since we hardly ever do when we’re home.  This is a good one!

Supplements- I brought all my supplements and I’m so glad.  I haven’t gotten sick and neither has my hubs and hopefully we don’t- knock on wood.  It might have something to do with this- who knows but I can only imagine it helps.  We love Seeking Health Supplements and Elite Fuel.  This is what I’ve been taking from each.

Dr. Wholeness Kid’s Multivitamin- I did not bring this with me and I’m still kicking myself!  I felt so bad.  I had it set out on our counter but forgot it.  Call it pregnancy brain I don’t know.  My kid take this religiously and it’s interesting that for the first week they didn’t they got sick.  Just really bummed I didn’t have it with me.  When traveling it’s crucial to have immunity up.  Can’t recommend this kid’s multivitamin enough!  Get it here!

Electrolytes- I’m so glad I brought my electrolyte packets from Seeking Health.  These are clutch for me daily but especially when I’m traveling and in the sun.  The sun can quickly dehydrate you and electrolytes are essential for keeping you hydrated with all the right minerals.  I just add one of these packets to my water and thats it!  They come in plain, berry and orange.  Get them here!

Imagination Magnets- This was such a fun game for my kids to play on the road trip!  It’s a magnet board and then it comes with cards with different images on them.  You take the magnet shapes it comes with and create the different shapes based off the cards.  Bonus you can find this on Amazon!

Magnetic Drawing Board- I’m pretty sure most of us had these as kids!  Well, my kids still love them.  I got this from amazon too.  Kept them busy!  They would switch toys too.  Great for my 2 year old and 4 year old.  Get it here on Amazon!

Washable Markers and Drawing Pads- I know it sounds simple but when kids have blank paper and markers a lot can happen!  These are clutch for the long road trip.  We got them both on Amazon too.

Back Seat Organizer- I bought one of these before our trip and now I’m wondering what we did before it!  It’s so handy!  It keeps everything organized.  I know exactly where all the essentials are.  No sifting through a bin.  I had some wipes in there, a brush and hair ties for the girls hair, water bottles, tissue, Clean Well Wipes, extra diapers, easy to get to snacks, garbage bags and some lotion.  I’m so excited to reorganize it for our daily use!  They’re so cheap on Amazon too!  Check them out here!

Laundry Detergent- I wish I would have brought some laundry detergent with us.  My mom brought some and saved us but on the way back Finley threw up in the car and we had to use random laundry detergent at a laundry mat when we washed her clothes.  Needless to say I washed them twice when we got home to get out the smell- so awful!  We stayed at a condo for a week so we had a washer and dryer.  My mom brought some Molly’s Sud’s with her thankfully.  Just a reminder next time to pack some!  I prefer powder when I travel- less mess!

Clean Well Wipes- Ok, not sure what we would have done without these on the trip!  From kid spills, to just cleaning things in general, to throw up.  Yes, you heard me right- vomit!  My oldest got sick on our trip and threw up in the car.  These were so clutch.  Not only did they help to disinfect but they also helped to take away the smell.  Clean Well uses the power of the essential oil thyme to kill germs.  I’m always going to have them in the car!  Get them here!

Well that sums up my road trip essentials!  I want to hear what you like to bring with you- what are your essentials?  Leave me a comment!

Stay tuned for my full organic California Guide coming soon!

Meet LuckyVitamin: Your one stop shop for natural living

Meet LuckyVitamin: Your one stop shop for natural living

I wanted to share a new online retailer I came across recently, Meet LuckyVitamin: Your one stop shop for natural living.  LuckyVitamin is different than any online retailer I’ve used in the past.

*This post is sponsored by LuckyVitamin, thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

I was so intrigued reading LuckyVitamin’s story!  It started as a pharmacy and has turned into an online natural wellness store.  A legacy that’s been passed down for 3 generations.   They have a passion for health, community, and spreading wellness.

LuckyVitamin takes the guesswork out of living a natural lifestyle.  It’s your one stop shop for all things wellness.  From natural and organic foods, supplements, herbs, baby, health aids, exercise and more!  They literally have it all.

One thing that I loved when shopping LuckyVitamin was how smooth the whole experience was.  They make it so simple with their easy to navigate website.  You can shop by health concern, by brand, department, by diet and they even offer a specialty tab for those who may have specific needs such as wanting products that don’t contain artificial fragrance.  They really have thought of it all!

They also have a tab called “Deals” that indicates what sales and promos are happening.  Making sure you don’t miss a thing!

I love their mission statement!

Mission Statement:

They also have a new membership program called LuckyVitamin+ that I joined.  I was so excited to learn of all the perks that came when becoming a member!

This Follain Everything Soap makes a great addition to any kitchen sink or shower.

Follain Everything Soaps

I’ve been a fan of these Everything Soaps for a while.  They’re packaging is so chic and really makes a statement on any sink counter or shower/bath.  They’re amber glass bottles with attached pumps.  What’s so cool about them is that you can refill them with the soap at any Follain store.  They have large soap dispensers there.  Don’t live next to a Follain, no worries!  Just buy the bottle and when you need to refill it, just use another soap.  If you’re wanting a natural soap but don’t love the look of plastic bottles, this is a great alternative.  Check them out here!

These two are the best when it comes to cream blushes in natural beauty.

Cream Blush

If you’ve followed me for a little bit, you know I love a good cream blush.  Especially for those with mature skin.  Powder blushes can settle into fine lines and look cakey.  Cream blushes make your skin look dewy and moist, bringing back the youthful glow.  I love Beautycounter’s Cream Blush Stick and Kjaer Weis Cream Blushes.

Love these organic sheets for SOL Organix!

Organic Sheets

Who wouldn’t love getting a new set of organic sheets?!  I have sheets from SOL Organics and love them.  They are soft, organic and keep me cool at night.  Great for going into summer when you want a cooler sheet set for the warmer months.  Conventional sheets are so toxic!

Since we spend about a 1/3 of our life in bed it’s important to know what were sleeping on.  Cotton is one of the most heavily sprayed crops.  Being doused with synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.  However, that’s not the only thing we should be concerned about.  Sheets often contain formaldehyde, and toxic dyes too.  There are also toxic softeners that are used now on bedding, creating a recipe for a toxic sleep experience!  Trust me, you’re mom will thank you when she sees a new organic sheet set.  Check them out here!

Love knowing that I’m protecting myself from harmful radiation with this phone case.

Safe Sleeve Phone Case

I recently got myself a Safe Sleeve phone case and have been so happy with it!  Protecting yourself from radiation from EMFs is so important with all the exposure we are receiving today.  A phone emits a good amount of radiation, since we constantly have our phones near or on us, it’s important to know how to protect ourselves.  Getting a Safe Sleeve Phone Case is one great option.   With a Safe Sleeve Case you block over 99% of RF and 92% of ELF radiation.  A gift any mom would appreciate!  Check them out here!

These sunglasses have been a favorite!

Sunglasses

These Ray Ban sunglasses I got last year and I LOVE them!  They are so comfortable and stay on my face so well.  I always get so many compliments on them.  They are polarized too!  I love that I can put them up on my head too, and they don’t get caught in my hair- it’s totally the little things.  They also look super chic- which never hurts.  Check them out here!

Beautycounter’s Flawless in Five is a game changer when it comes to transitioning to natural beauty.

Flawless In Five

I like to describe it as being on a roller coaster.  One minute you’re up and the next minute you’re down.  To be honest, sometimes I feel like two different people.  There’s the me before pregnancy, and then there’s the me during pregnancy.  There’s just so many changes happening all at once.  You want to just feel normal and carry on but that is anything but how it is.

I called this blog post how to survive pregnancy in the first trimester because that’s really how I feel.  I know so many people who don’t have symptoms or feel amazing throughout their pregnancy which is awesome.  But it hasn’t been my case.  I literally feel like I’m in survival mode.  Everything that came easy to me before feels 10 times harder.  Whether it’s doing laundry, making dinner, cleaning the house, doing my job, or being a parent to my kids.  It just takes more head space and energy than before.

Suffice to say babies really can take it out of you.  I’ve experienced all of the symptoms in the first trimester listed above.  Overall, the  fatigue is real.  I don’t know how many times I would literally just end up taking a nap when I should have been blogging or cleaning or anything besides napping.  I’m not a napper at all, so taking a nap is just all around foreign to me.  But when I’m pregnant sometimes it’s the best medicine.

I’m going to be sharing my experience and tips and tricks throughout my pregnancy that really help me.  Trust me, if you’re reading this and you’re not a mama yet, don’t worry!  Pregnancy looks so different on everyone and you might not experience these symptoms at all.  It also usually gets so much better as you get further along in pregnancy, especially nausea.

I created a list of natural resources that have really helped when it comes to surviving the first trimester.  I hope these help you like they did me!  After all, us mamas have to stick together. 🙂

First trimester survival

Just a few of my favorite things in this first trimester!

First Trimester Natural Resources-

  • Brooklyn Crafted Extra Spicy Sugar Free Ginger Beers- These have helped me in a massive way with my nausea.  My friend Kate from Root and Revel had recommended them to me.  They’re made with just a few real food ingredients and sweetened with stevia not sugar so you’re not getting a crazy high sugar spike.  Plus, they have real ginger in them so they help ease nausea.  They’re carbonated too which is huge for me!  I love carbonation when I’m pregnant and these definitely hit the spot when I’m needing something fizzy.  I usually have one in the morning when my nausea is at it’s peak.  Get them here!
  • Real Food For Pregnancy Book- This book was recommended to me by my friend Dr. Ben Lynch.  He’s a research doctor and knows his stuff.  It has been such a resource for me!  I’ve read pregnancy books before that have talked about nutrition but don’t have a lot of evidence to back up their claims.  This book really gives so many references!  It debunks so many of the common pregnancy nutrition guidelines people have been taught and turns them on their heads.  Lily does such a thorough job of laying out what you should eat during pregnancy and why.  She even goes into meal plans, recipes and supplement advice.  I can’t recommend this book enough if you want to optimize your pregnancy. Get the book here!
  • Seeking Health Supplements- These supplements have been taken on the daily by me.  Supplementing is so important these days since are soil is so depleted and even if you’re eating a whole foods diet you can miss key nutrients.  From Seeking Health I take their Optimal Prenatal, or their Optimal Prenatal Chewable,  their Optimal Fish OilVitamin B Complex Plus, NAC, ProBiota HistaminX,  and Optimal Magnesium.  It’s so important to take folate instead of folic acid.  Watch this video my friend Dr. Ben Lynch did.  So insightful!
  • Elite Fuel Iron Supplement- This has been the best iron supplement I’ve found.  It literally has increased my iron levels quicker than any other iron supplement.  I can’t recommend it enough!  Get it here!
  • Elite Fuel Vitamin D3+K2 Supplement- This is a liquid Vitamin D3 +K2, I love that it’s a liquid.  It’s so easy to take. Get it here!
  • Podcasts:  I’ve done two podcasts about fertility and conceiving and what to supplement, eat and so on in pregnancy.  You can check them out here and here.  Such great resources!

This is the best stuff! Sweetened with stevia and contains real ginger.

Other Tips-

  • Make breakfast ahead of time- I’ve found for me that having some foods prepped has helped me a lot.  In the mornings my nausea is at an all time high.  One of my favorite foods to have on hand is homemade granola.  Then I just add some to 100% grass-fed organic greek yogurt.  I really like the brand Maple Hill.  They have an organic 100% grass-fed greek yogurt that’s amazing. I just eat plain to avoid the extra sugars.  This greek yogurt I’ve found has the best texture!  The combination of the fat and protein with some carbs has been just the ticket for me.  It helps to curb my nausea and keeps me feeling full a couple hours. Plus, it sounds good which is half the battle!  If you have been pregnant before you know this is key.  Knowing I have this quick breakfast in the morning to go too has been huge.  It really has made a huge difference in helping me operate smoother in the mornings.  Then I’ll make a green smoothie a couple hours later.  But right away I need something the moment I wake up. Scroll to the bottom for my granola recipe.
  • Chicken and Egg Salad- For whatever reason I’ve been craving both of these throughout my pregnancy.  I’ve made them both and then we also have local place that uses good ingredients that I feel great about ordering from.  I’ll make some for the week and store it in the fridge for lunches.  It’s so nice already having something pre-made on hand.  I don’t follow a particular recipe- kind of a rebel like that but there are a few ingredients I use instead of conventional ones that are important to note.  Instead of regular mayonnaise I use Primal Kitchen’s Mayo- super clean ingredients.  I like adding dill to my egg salads- love me some dill!  For the chicken salad I put celery, chicken, pecan, and apple a lot of times.  It really depends on what I have on hand.  Then I chop up some spinach leaves and toss it all together with the chicken or egg salad.  SO good!  If you want a good recipe I would up opt for one that’s paleo- usually they have pretty simple, clean ingredients.  Here’s a chicken salad recipe and an egg salad recipe.
  • Soda Stream- If you follow me then you know I love some good carbonation.  Well it’s at an all time high when I’m pregnant!  The carbonation really helps to ease my nausea.  I love having this glass soda stream.  It keeps me fully supplied with sparking water.  I love knowing that my carbonated water is filtered since I use the water from my Berkey.  They have the plastic bottles but I prefer the Soda Stream that use glass bottles.  Plastic bottles can leaky unwanted chemicals into my water.  Check out the glass Soda Stream here!
  • Cold Fresh Fruit- All my pregnancy I’ve craved fresh fruit, this one no different.  I loved having organic strawberries, organic organges, organic blueberries and organic raspberries on hand.  Costco has some of the best deals for organic fruit.  I’m pretty sure I had 2-3 Cara Cara oranges a day!
  • Smoothies- I find it hard to eat my normal amount of veggies when I’m pregnant in the first trimester.  Texture, smell and taste are all off for me.  I’m grateful for smoothies!  These help me pack a ton of veggies in and just slurp them down instead of having to chew them and gag- just being real. I would pack spinach, celery and cucumber in my smoothies and then add some healthy fats like cashew butter, some fiber with chia seeds, some superfood powders like pomegranate powder, camu powder, açaí powder, and half a banana. I would add a cup of coconut milk and blend up!  Then once blended add my protein powder.  Activ Whey Goat Whey Protein is the BEST protein!  If you haven’t tried it you need to get on it.  I personally know the owner and founder and love how authentic he is.  He sources from grass-fed goats.  Can’t recommend it enough!  Get it here!
  • Eggs- I hadn’t been eating eggs because my food sensitivity test showed I was sensitive to them.  However, when pregnant I’ve been eating them because of the choline content in them.  Choline is so important in pregnancy. If you want to understand more about Choline check out a podcast I did with Sarah Morgan a functional nutritionist.
  • Primally Pure Deodorant- I knew I needed to find a natural deodorant that was safe during pregnancy because your underarms soak up so much of what you put on them.  I was happy to find Primally Pure and know that they are completely safe to use during pregnancy.  They have done extensive research to ensure that their products are clean.  I love the Blue Tansy and Charcoal Deodorant- so does my husband!  Get them here!
  • True Botanicals Pregnancy Skincare Line- I love knowing that I can still have an active natural skincare line that is still safe for myself and baby during pregnancy.  If you’ve followed me you know that I love True Botanical’s Antioxidant Booster and Repair Serum- holy grail products in natural beauty.  Well, True Botanicals has a whole skincare line dedicated to pregnancy.  Excluding the ingredients you don’t want in your products while pregnant, yet still creating an amazing skincare line.  I’ve been using their Calm Pure Radiance Oil and Vitamin C Booster. Since True Botanical’s Antioxidant Booster isn’t recommend for pregnancy I’ve been swapping it out for the Vitamin C Booster. Check out all their pregnancy safe products here!
  • Beautycounter- Another safe line for pregnancy is Beautycounter.  I trust their line completely with all of their third party testing and stringent screening process for ingredients.  I have been using their body butter– so luxurious and crucial for my growing belly!  I also have been using their body wash and their shampoo and conditioner.  Plus, their Countermatch Recovery Sleeping Cream.  I love knowing I can literally just go to their website and not think twice about picking up a product when I’m pregnant.  Shop all of Beautycounter’s products here!  This is an excerpt taken from their website:

This granola recipe is SO good! It is a spin off of Purely Elizabeth’s chocolate granola but with less sugar and more good fiber!
