Best Green Beauty Oils/Serums

Best Green Beauty Oils/Serums

This post has been a long time coming, but I’m finally dishing on the best green beauty oils/serums.  I seriously have had an oils/serums post in the works forever.  I have notes I jotted down about each one I tried.  This is one product that you can’t just try in 2 weeks- it takes some time to really get to know the formula and see results.  I’ve done my homework though and rounded out my favorite green beauty facial oils/serums.  I often get asked which ones I like best in green beauty- so I knew I needed to eventually write a dedicated post.

Now you might be wondering why use an oil/serum on your face?  Good question.  First, I must explain what the difference is between an oil and a serum.

A serum is meant to target specific concerns of the skin and is usually a mixture of water, and ingredients like antioxidants, vitamins, etc.  The molecule structure is smaller, so it’s able to penetrate the skin and do the work, repairing, replenishing and so on. I like to think of a serum as the real game changer when it comes to your skincare routine.  It isn’t filled with a lot of extras, instead it’s loaded with all the potent, skin changing ingredients.  Usually a serum is the most expensive product of a skincare line because it’s the most activated.

“My mantra as an esthetician has been, put your money into oils/serums and skimp on cleansers.  Cleansers you wash off, an oil/serum stays on your skin doing the work.”

A facial oil is different.  It’s going to give your skin moisture and nourishment, and obviously doesn’t include water.  You want an oil to have a blend of essential fatty acids(EFA’s) or omegas.  Our bodies don’t produce EFA’s on their own so we need to supplement them internally and externally.  I like taking a fish oil daily for some good omega 3’s.  Oils also can contain a mix of essential oils that help to balance the skin and provide therapeutic properties.  Oil’s work perfectly with our skin’s cutaneous and get to the center of the epidermis.  Many people with oily skin think they should avoid oils- when really the opposite is true.  Using oils helps bring balance to the skin and don’t clog pores like other moisturizers that contain emulsifiers, waxes, etc.

Ok, now that you know the difference between an oil and a serum, let’s talk about when and how to use them.

This is how to apply an oil/serum:

  • Cleanse skin
  • Tone/Mist
  • Add a few drops of serum to your hands and press into your face(allow to seep in before applying oil, also don’t overdue it with a serum. They can contain powerful ingredients and often people apply too much which leads to sensitivity if not careful)
  • Add a few drops of oil to your hands and press- in rub in with upwards streaks
  • Apply eye serum(use your ring finger and apply in tapping motions. Your ring finger has the least muscles out of all your fingers)
  • Finish with a cream if you need additional moisture and to protect skin(a cream doesn’t seep into the skin like an oil or serum will, it’s meant to protect the skin from environment and elements)

An oil/serum have the power to change your skin.  Think words like resurface, hyper pigmentation, fade, even out skin tone, and so on. All words that perk people’s ears up when it comes to skincare.  Often people give up on an oil or serum too early.  I’ve seen it time and time again.  They use a product for two weeks and say it doesn’t work or my skin is freaking out.  You need to give oils and serums time to see change.  Especially when it comes to clean skincare.  If you’ve switched over from conventional it may take a period of time for your skin to adjust to your new products.  Give it time and watch your skin take on a whole new look.  Many of the products I list below are really powerful oils.  I have a few dedicated serums as well.

Things I’ve noticed since using oils and serums:

  • Hyper pigmentation fade
  • Overall brighter/radiant complexion
  • A more balanced complexion(doesn’t feel dry in certain areas)
  • Less red and more even toned

Ready to see my favorites??  I’ve got options for low and high budgets and all kinds of skincare needs.  These are products that I’ve personally tried over the years and can say they they work.  So grab your note pad- it’s time to take notes!  I’m not going to go into great detail about ingredients, or brands.  I’ve done reviews on most of these already and will link the review so you can check out more details if you wish!

Maya Chia-

The Super Couple- (all skin types, even sensitive) Love this oil.  The smell is so good, nothing over powering, just an amazing mixture of essential oils.  It just feels so luxe the moment you apply.  It’s not super heavy, but a nice medium rich feel.  It literally absorbs so well into the skin leaving behind a pinkish hue that gives your skin a glow. My skin drinks up every drop of this oil. It helped to lighten my hyper pigmentation and even my skin tone.  It also brightened my under eye mom circles- seriously.  I started using this when I had a 4 month old and lets just say I needed all the help I could get.  This oil is a game changer. Check out my full review here and grab one for yourself here!

Supercritical Pure Chia Oil- (dry skin, sensitive) This oil is from Maya Chia as well but it is different than The Super Couple.  It smells more citrusy in my opinion but still light. This oil is made for even the driest skin types.  Literally hydrating the most parched skin.  It also has ingredients that plump up the skin and minimize fine lines.  This is an all around super hydrator.  I use it in the morning before my makeup or after a serum at night when I need some extra moisture.  Your skin will feel like silk!  Read more on the Supercritical Pure Chia Oil here and get one for yourself here!

Clary Sage Chamomile Calming Serum- This serum is also an oil.  It really is filled with so many therapeutic oils that help promote cell turnover and calm the skin.  Great for those who have acne or have sensitive skin that wants to flare up.  I love the smell of this oil! I get hints of rose and chamomile, but it’s not overwhelming.  It’s not a super heavy feeling oil but a good medium texture.  I noticed improved skin clearness, the redness was minimized- especially around my t-zone.  I also noticed my skin felt so hydrated and smooth in the morning.  Like it had a big gulp of water.  My sisters used this as well when we were on vacation and they loved it too!  This is a budget friendly oil.  Read my full review here and snag your’s here!

Pure Radiance Oil- (all skin types) This rich oil does what it’s name suggests- gives you a radiance.  It smells so fresh too.  This oil is packed full of powerful antioxidants that do some serious work on the skin.  It’s  True Botanical’s best selling product and for good reason- it performs.  It not only hydrates the skin to the core, but also provides antioxidants to help fight free radical damage.  My skin looks renewed and dewy when using this oil.  I often feel like a broken record, but True Botanical’s products perform.  Even though I try many serums/oils I find myself reaching for this one often when I need an extra surge of hydration and a pick me up.  Read my full review here and snag your bottle here!

Basics Collection Hydrating Oil- (budget friendly, ok for pregnancy) This oil is from True Botanical’s Basic Collection.  It’s a more budget friendly line from True Botanicals and I love it.  This oil doesn’t feel quite as heavy as True Botanicals Pure Radiance Oil.  It has the signature TB scent but much lighter.  This oil is completely safe for pregnancy too.  It really just delivers all around.  From hydration to soothing the skin and it has antioxidants that help fight signs of aging too.  This is such a good deal for what you get!  Read my full review here and get your bottle here!

Basics Collection Hydrating Serum- (budget friendly, ok for pregnancy) Another budget friendly option from TB’s Basic’s Collection. This is a traditional serum that isn’t going to hydrate on it’s own but assist in hydrating your skin with hyaluronic acid.  It penetrates deep into the skin, leaving lasting hydration and helping fight free radical damage.  I really loved how this made my skin feel.  It would feel completely plump and moist.  I felt my skin looked more youthful because all my wrinkles weren’t defined from being dried out but were filled with water.  Huge fan!  Read my full review here and get yourself a bottle here!

Leahlani- (dry, combination, sensitive skin)

Mahina- This elixir oil quickly became a fave.  It not only hydrates your skin, but nourishes it with nutrients while you sleep.  You wake up with smooth, even skin.  One particular oil that Leah put in that I love is prickly pear seed oil.  It has been known to help brighten skin, fight signs of aging and moisturize like crazy.  A definite home run oil.  The biggest thing I noticed right away with Mahina is how much it calmed my redness.  Especially around my nose.  My skin felt replenished and soothed.  The smell is of course wonderful too, as are all of Leahlani’s products.  Read my full review on Leahlani here and grab your Mahina here!

Marie Veronique- (acne, sensitive, rosacea)

Soothing B3 Serum-This is a powerful serum!  It’s main ingredient B3 helps calm inflammation and help ceramide rejuvenate production.  It acts like a gel when it goes on your skin, leaving a serious glow all day long.  I feel like everyone needs this!  Got hormonal breakouts, acne or redness?? This serum helps to reduce inflammation, which causes all acne.  My redness was reduced and my skin looked more even and clear.  I love that it is fragrance free and essential oil free, great for those with the most sensitive skin types.  Great for night time or day time, this is a must in anyone’s skincare routine!  Get your Soothing B3 Serum here!

Kahina- (all skin types)

Brightening Serum- I’ve been using this serum for 5 years and it still remains one of my faves!  It helps to minimize dark spots and hyper pigmentation and bring an overall brightness to my complexion. Fave Serums

Fave Serums

Ok, this post has been a long time coming… a really long time!  I love a good serum and so does my skin.  Why use a serum?  Oh boy, don’t get me started.  There are some areas where you can skimp but a good serum is not one of them.  If there was one skincare product I would recommend investing in it would be a good quality serum.  Serums are different then traditional cream moisturizers.  Instead of adding in all the extra thickeners and emollients they pack them full of anti-aging antioxidants and other beneficial ingredients.  Serums are more concentrated to treat the skin, whether it’s for anti-aging, hyper pigmentation, eczema or just overall moisture renewal.  Are you getting why I invest in a serum?  This is also why they typically cost more than other skincare products, because they are so potent-full of  ingredients that can really help steer your skin in the direction you want it to go.

A lot of people think if they have acne, then they should stay away from serums because they’re an oil-couldn’t be farther from the truth!  Most of the time with oily skin, serums are the better option than a traditional moisturizer.  As I mentioned, traditional moisturizers have a lot of added fillers that could clog pores, and serums just contain the pure oil and antioxidants.  Serums since they’re so potent, can target specific areas, so if you do have acne, there is a serum for you.  Plus, gone are the days where people starve their skin of any moisture as to dry out their acne.  No more peroxides and harsh ingredients needed.

I’ve tried out a good number of serums in my day and I’ve come across some favorites for all skin types and issues.  And good thing, considering most conventional serums are filled with toxins like mineral oil, Parfum/Fragrance, Phenoxyethanol, Propylene Glycol PEG’s and a lot more junk that you don’t want anywhere near your skin.

Here are my findings, there will be more to come-for sure, but for now these are tried and true.

Acure Seriously Firming Facial Serum-

This is another great serum that really works and doesn’t break the bank.  Full of all organic ingredients like pumpkin seed oil, borage oil and argan oil, this little bottle packs a punch.  It’s heavier then some serums, definitely more of a rich oil.  It smells so good too-the scents that stick out to me are lavender and orange.  This felt like a drink of water for my skin.  I would wake up in the morning and my skin would just feel so plump…in a good way.  Borage oil is actually known for soothing skin and calming redness…hello!  I didn’t use this in the day under makeup because it was too heavy for me.  Over time I noticed a glow to my skin and just balanced skin.  My skin felt firmer and I attribute it to all the moisture my skin was getting from the potent oils.  Remember, dry skin lends itself to wrinkles, hydrated skin equals happy plump skin.  This is great for those with dry to combination skin.  At $19.99, a no brainer for anyone sticking to a budget and wanting a natural serum!

Skin Owl Beauty Drops-

These are such great affordable serums too.  I used the Geranium Beauty Drops and it’s almost gone-that’s how good it is peeps!  I love one of Annie’s(the creator of Skin Owl) concepts on skincare-she said, “I wanted to provide more than just skin care, I wanted to deliver a core component of total self-care too.”  And who can argue with that?  Total self care is what you get with this beautiful serum.  First off, it smells amazing and has two ingredients raw organic argan oil and organic geranium oil.  Just pure stuff people-it really doesn’t take much!  The geranium is best for combination skin types that need to decongest, enhance radiance and give overall moisture.  My skin feels so moisturized when I use it.  Not greasy- it literally melts into my skin.  I wake up in the morning with supple and even skin-no redness.  I also used it underneath my makeup.  I would apply 5 minutes before my foundation application-it went on so evenly.  They also make two other Beauty Drops, one for oily/acne skin called Lavender and the other for dry/mature skin called Clary Sage.  She also has a nighttime oil called Mangosteen, which I haven’t tried but can only imagine how wonderful it is.  Bottom line if you’re looking for a serum that does the work on your skin but want an affordable option, then this is it!  It retails for $30.

Wonderland Organics/Sublime Serum-

The Sublime Serum is great for sensitive skin.  I have dry skin, but it can be oily sometimes too, and this was just what my skin needed.  With organic ingredients like pomegranate oil, apricot kernel oil and argan oil, this truly is a moisturizing serum.  What I love about the serum is that it melts right into my skin and doesn’t leave an oily residue.  It smells amazing too, with notes of rose in it.  Upon waking up in the morning my skin feels supple, moist and revived.  My redness has gone down and I felt my skin looked even and awake.  This also works great underneath my makeup.  I would highly recommend if you have dry to normal skin. I also have a full review on the other two serums from Wonderland Organics on the blog here. $39.99.

May Lindstrom Youth Dew-

This is a luxurious serum and I love it.  First, it smells insanely good, I get hints of rose and citrus-perfectly blended together.  The serum melts into my skin and feels weightless while at the same time perfectly balancing my skin.  My skin absorbed it all-no oily feeling…something I just love about this serum.  It’s not as heavy as some serums I’ve used.  After using it for a while I noticed a glow and dewy look.  I never felt my skin was dry…it’s hard to explain, it was just so balanced.  I used it underneath my foundation and it created a perfect even complexion.  Don’t even get me started on the ingredients- it’s just packed with over 20 botanical plant oils that are anti-aging, as well as CoEnzyme Q10.  I recommend this for all skin types.  It’s not too heavy for blemish proned skin, yet moisturizing enough for dry/combination.  The creator May puts so much into her products, if you’re looking for a luxurious skincare experience that is not only pure to the core but produces results, then this is it.  The price is steeper but you also have to consider how many active ingredients are packed in it…it’s chockfull!  $120.

Kahina Beauty Brightening Serum-

This has been in my skincare routine for a while-a must have product for me.  Just like the name says, it brightens and lightens spots on your skin.  From sun spots, hyper pigmentation, acne scars, elasticity, and firmness-it gives an overall radiance.  It’s not like a typical oil serum that’s heavy but lighter.  It doesn’t even look like an oil, it’s a whitish color.  It does take some time to see results as far as brightening spots but it does work over time.  I feel an even look to my skin.  A lot of times people say their skin doesn’t feel even or their complexion is dark in one area and light in another…well this is the product you need!  I’m a pretty big fan of anything Kahina, her cleanser is amazing too and I think she has the best night cream I have tried.  Anyone could benefit from the brightening serum…that’s all.  $72

Kypris Antioxidant Dew-

This is a water based serum.  It is the perfect serum to apply pre-makeup application.  It hardly feels like an oil to me, because it’s so much lighter than what you think of traditional oils.  My face doesn’t look oily or greasy at all but moisturized.  It just settles in my skin perfectly, leaving the perfect canvas for foundation.  This is especially great for those who have unbalanced complexions.  I’ve just been using this since the summer, and I imagine in the winter I’ll need more moisture for sure, since this is so light.  But this is the perfect serum for day time.  Just like the name suggests, it helps to protect skin from environmental damage and pollutants.  All of Kypris products are great for sensitive skin types- the serum doesn’t really smell like anything to me.  They also have two other serums Moonlight Catalyst and Clearing Serum.  As well as 3 Beauty Elixirs.  They all serve a different purpose and can be combined together for the ultimate skin cocktail.  $67

These are my current faves when it comes to serums/treatments.  This only the tip of the iceberg of all the serums out there.  I will definitely be reviewing more to come (I currently am) but for now I wanted to share what I’ve used and loved.  Have you used any of these or do have other faves?  Let me know in the comments, I would love to hear!
