Natural Hand Creams/Lotions/Balms

Natural Hand Creams/Lotions/Balms

With temperatures dropping my hands are slowly getting drier.  The cold weather zaps all the moisture out of them.  I’ve done my fair share of testing with hand creams/lotions (whatever you want to call them) and narrowed it down to my natural top picks.

People apply a hand cream several times a day, so it’s important to pick a non-toxic one.  Conventional hand creams can contain a number of toxic offenders, like mineral oil, phenoxyethanol, PEG’s, parabens, and fragrance…just to name a few.  No thanks!  Think about it?  You apply your hand cream several times a day, so you end up applying toxins several times a day…not good.  Plus, a lot of these toxic creams contain ingredients that will actually dry your skin out more, instead of help hydrate and bring moisture.  So what to do?

Here are my top picks for hand creams/lotions-

Osmia Organics Shea Hand Cream-

This hand cream does it all.  It comes in a pump dispenser that makes it easy to use, and the smell is amazing!  A mix of vanilla, rosemary and a few other essential oils.  It’s not a strong smell, just perfect.  The hand cream itself hydrates my skin, but leaves no greasy residue-something I love.  It isn’t the most hydrating moisturizer I’ve used, but a good mid-range one.  I use this all year round.  I also prefer it during the day when I’m out and about because it is so easy to use, and doesn’t leave a greasy residue.  A must for anyone looking for a moisturizer that has it all.  They’re offering 20% off for Cyber Monday- use code: OOHOLIDAY2015 They also have it the scent Linden Rose. $24  (sample size for $4)

Metta Hand Balm-

First, I love how this hand balm comes in a glass jar!  It is just like the name suggests-more of a balm then a hand cream.   A little goes a long way with this beauty.  It melts into an oil feel when you put it on.  However, the oily feeling quickly resides, and your left with perfectly hydrated hands.  The scent is really mild, hints of lavender, but nothing overwhelming.  I love applying right before I go to bed- I wake up with happy, hydrated hands.  My hands have never been softer!  I definitely recommend for those with dry/cracked hands.  This is a lot heavier than the Osmia hand cream, as it a balm and not a cream.  $22 (Use coupon code: GURLGONEGREEN for 30% off)

Booda Butter-

This moisturizer can be for your hands or anywhere you need a little extra hydration.  It comes in a tin and is more of a balm texture, similar to the Metta hand balm.  The smell reminds me of chocolate…chocolate frosting to be exact.  I gather the smell comes from the cocoa butter in it.  With only five ingredients, this moisturizer packs a punch.  If you don’t like an oily residue, then this may not be your moisturizer.  It definitely leaves an oily residue behind.  But it really leaves your skin soft and hydrated, so take your pick.  I’ve even used this on my body.  It’s a more budget friendly option, and a little goes a long way, so you’ll definitely have this for a while.  Plus, for those who don’t like any added fragrance this is a natural  great pick.  $14

ZOE Organics Everything Balm-

This is another balm but it’s not greasy.  It really melts right into your skin, leaving behind the smell of lavender and vanilla.  It’s more of a barrier or shield than a greasy balm.  It leaves my skin moisturized and for a while.  I have this in my purse at all times.  I’ve used it on my daughter’s diaper rashes, my hands and even this weird rash I had on my neck for a while, (don’t ask).  The name really does describe it well, it does a little of everything.  I’ve even used it on my lips.  You all need one of these!  Bonus, you can find this at Target.  Use coupon code: GGG20 for 20% online at Zoeorganics.com.  $14

Shea Terra Organic Mini Shea Whippers-

I had never heard of this brand before getting their shea butter in my Glowing Beets Box-but I am huge fan now.   Shea Terra Organics sources the most potent, organic and wild harvested ingredients from across Africa.  This pristine environment, little tainted by modern pollution, grows some of the safest, unchanged botanical ingredients on earth. Unwilling to compromise, Shea Terra Organics uses whole herbs for its potent, synergistic benefits.  This shea butter smells like the tropics-a perfect blend of lime and coconut.  It melts right into your skin and leaves behind no greasy residue.  It’s pack full of all the good stuff too!  Aloe vera, pumpkin seed oil, shea butter and essential oils.  The 10z. jar is the perfect size to take on a trip or stash in your purse.  They also have so many other tantalizing scents available.  This is also a more budget friendly option.  Can you say the perfect natural stocking stuffer?!  $6

q c Natural s quinny’s cream-

I was sent some of q c naturals products and as I’ve been testing them out, I have to say, I am thoroughly impressed.  Their quinny’s cream has quickly become a fave.  It only has three simple ingredients: shea butter, avocado oil, and olive fruit oil.  I haven’t seen this combination together before, but it’s a good one, because it works!  You can use it for so much more than just your hands too!  It comes in a hefty 4 oz. jar, and looks and feels like a hand cream more than a hand balm.  It goes on smooth and hydrates so well.  My hands feel soft and not greasy.  I was really impressed how long my hands felt smooth and moist…this is some good stuff.  Not only is this natural vegan but also scent free for those who are sensitive to smell.  $20 (35% off for Cyber Monday Use Code: CYBERSTEALS)

100% Pure Coconut Hand Buttercream-

This is similar to most hand creams/lotions I grew up using.  It comes in a snap closure/squeeze package.  This smells amazing…like island paradise.  They also have several other scents as well.  This hand cream is a good all around moisturizer.  It isn’t the most intensely hydrating hand cream, but it does the job and doesn’t leave your hands feeling greasy.  It’s also very budget friendly at $11.99.  (Pharmaca.com is having a 30% off Cyber Monday sale, use code: CYBER, stock up on this one).

Well that’s a wrap!  Those are my top hand cream picks.  Make sure and stock up with the coupon codes!  These all would be the perfect stocking stuffer!  Do you see any faves?  What’s your favorite hand cream?

Uncle Harry’s Green Review

Uncle Harry’s Green Review

Uncle Harry’s was so kind to send me some of their natural green products to try out-so many goodies!  I was familiar with the brand a little, since I use their toothpaste-my fave!  I sampled some of their skincare/teeth products this time around.  Uncle Harry’s is a family owned company, specializing in creating earth friendly, natural products at affordable prices.  All of their creations are handmade using the best in organic, sustainable, and local materials.  Another bonus?  They’re made right here in the greater Seattle area-my hood!

Why I really like Uncle Harry’s?   A lot of people either can’t afford luxury organic products or don’t want to pay for them-that’s where Uncle Harry’s comes in.  A company that not only makes quality products, but products for the whole family and that anyone can afford or are willing to buy!

What did I sample?  Some skincare, teeth products and a scalp product.  They have SO many products that I didn’t sample, so if you don’t see something you like here, trust me, there’s probably something on their website.  Anyways, let’s get to the ones I did sample.

Instant Clay Mask Bar-

This is definitely the first time I’ve used Indian clay on my skin.  It has a different smell that’s for sure.  Kind of herbal medicinal.  It’s also a different concept than a traditional mask I’ve used.  It comes in a bar form and you wet your skin and then take one end of the bar and cover your face in it.  Let it dry and then wipe off.  My skin felt so moisturized afterwards, counterintuitive to what you may be used to with traditional clay masks.  My skin felt so smooth.  There is literally two ingredients in the whole bar-Indian Yellow clay and Kewra fragrance.  It can be used as a cleanser, but I found it didn’t remove all my makeup, so I just used it as a mask.  $3

Jojoba Face Tonic-

This toner has jojoba oil, colloidal silver water, grapefruit seed extract and an array of essential oils.  The smell is light and refreshing.  It left my skin feeling hydrated and soft.  A great hydrosol after cleansing and before serum/moisturizer.  $5

Pure Raw Argan Oil-

I loved this oil!  One of my favorite products that I’ve tried from Uncle Harry’s.  It’s moisturizing but not greasy.  It melted into my skin so effortlessly and in the morning my skin was supple.  It just has organic extra virgin cold pressed raw argan oil.  Great for a deep hair conditioner too!  I also used it before I applied my foundation and it just glided on-a great product to get skin prepped for even makeup application.  $12

Hemp Blemish Salve-

I was really interested in this salve.  I’ve never used a salve for a blemish before, but used a ton of serums.  It has lavender and calendula in it-both known for their antiseptic properties.  I loved the smell!  Smells definitely like the perfect blend of lavender and calendula.  So I did put it on a blemish and slept on it overnight.  The blemish was just red and painful to the touch.  What happened?  The next morning the blemish had gone down.  I used it for several days in a row and it went away-no rupture!  It definitely didn’t take it away the next day, but it did help over time.  $6

Herbal Coconut Oil-

This was another favorite!  Filled with hydrating oils like coconut, hemp, almond oil and an array of essential oils.  I loved using it after showering for all over moisturized skin.  I also used it for shaving and my skin was silky smooth afterwards.  I highly recommend! It smells fresh and very herbal.  This is also great for travel-only 2 oz.!  $3

Hair and Scalp Elixir-

This was another great one.  I mean who doesn’t love a good scalp massage, especially when a good scalp oil is involved?!  This concoction is filled with apple cider vinegar, and essential oils to remove build up, help stimulate the scalp and help hair grow.  It feels very invigorating on the scalp-especially with the peppermint, and eucalyptus.  You put the drops on your scalp and then rub it in.  You can leave it on for 30 minutes or overnight.  My husband and I took turns giving scalp massages.  I definitely would recommend this if you find you have an oily scalp, prone to dry scalp/dandruff or just like  a good scalp massage!  $5

Oral Swish-

This was another fave!  It is a cold pressed sesame oil mixed with essential oils for oil pulling.  Oil pulling not only removes toxins from your mouth but your whole body.  It is simply adding a small amount of the oil in your mouth and swishing it around for 5-20 minutes and then spitting out and brushing your teeth.  You will be amazed at how clean your teeth feel.  I really liked using sesame oil.  I typically use coconut oil with no essential oils.  This also didn’t solidify like my coconut oil-another perk of sesame oil.  $10

Peppermint Toothpaste-

I wasn’t sent any of their toothpaste, but this is what I use for my toothpaste and I love it!  My teeth feel so clean and my breath stays fresh.  There is no glycerin or sugar in the toothpaste-something I find in most natural brands.  It uses bentonite clay to draw out bacteria and grime from the mouth, which is very alkalizing.  Also, it comes in a glass jar, and there’s no need to worry about double dipping because the essential oils in it are antiseptic.  You all need this! $6

Want to try some of their products- I don’t blame you!  Just enter GURLGONEGREEN at checkout for 20% off.  For more information and to view all their products, check out their website here. Have you tried any of their products?

HomemadeDuJour Review

HomemadeDuJour Review

I was sent 4 different products to review by Jessy the owner of HomemadeDuJour, an Artisanal Organic Skincare Line.  HomemadeDuJour offers body products, scrubs, and facial care.  It has been such a delight getting to know Jessy through social media.  Her passion for living a holistic lifestyle is so evident in her skincare products.  She is not only a mom but a business owner…my hat goes off to her!

The four products I had the pleasure of sampling were the Cocoa Lavender Organic Body Butter, Lemon Lavender Organic Sugar Scrub, Organic Eye Cream and Organic Face Cream.  All of which are filled with pure ingredients.  Jessy even lists all her ingredients on her website and is so transparent-which I love!  Also, all her products come in dark glass jars.  Not only does that help preserve the product but it doesn’t leach plastic into the product!

Ok, enough chit chat, let’s talk products.

Cocoa Lavender Organic Body Butter-

I’m typically an oil gal through and through but this body butter had me coming back for more!  I applied it right after my shower and my skin soaked it right up.  There wasn’t any greasy residue leftover.  I especially loved this for my feet-helped soften my callouses.  My skin felt so soft the next day.  When I applied it, I warmed it up in my hands first.  This helped to soften the butter so it would glide on.  Only 7 ingredients…so great!  I really enjoyed the lavender scent as well, not too strong but just enough.  This retails for $22.

Lemon Lavender Organic Sugar Scrub-

This sugar scrub is infused with real lavender and lemon throughout and smells so good.  It would literally wake me up in the morning.  It was a little too rough for my face but I loved it for my body.  My skin felt so revived and moisturized after using it.  This product was also great for my feet…haha I’m a big proponent of keeping up my feet!      Just like the body butter this has 7 pure ingredients.  Retails for $15.

Organic Eye Cream-

I’m pretty sure this eye cream will last me forever!  A little goes a long way.  It is a thicker eye cream then I’ve ever used before.  I had to warm it up with my fingers to help dab it on.  Always pat your eye cream, the skin is the thinnest around the eye.  Oh and use your ring finger, has the least muscles in it.  It really moisturized the eye area and when I woke up in the morning it wasn’t greasy.  It was too heavy to apply during the day…my makeup looked greasy under the eye area.  If you’re really dry underneath the eye area and are looking for a good eye moisturizer, this would be great.  Retails for $25

Organic Face Cream-

This organic facial cream, like most of HomemadeDujours line is for dry/mature skin types.  It is very moisturizing.  With ingredients like coconut oil, cacao butter and shea butter, you’re skin will be so hydrated.  Again, I’m an oil gal and have to have my serum for at night.  I applied my serum, waited 5 minutes for that to soak in and then I applied the facial cream.  I always recommend using an anti-aging serum first-your skin soaks in all the antioxidants, then apply the facial cream for added moisture.  My face was greasy when I went to bed but in the morning it was supple and moisturized.  If you have really dry, thirsty skin this would be perfect!  Pure ingredients as well in this one.  I did have to rub the cream in my hands to warm it up so it applied easier.  Retails for $45.

You can find all of these products and other HomemadeDujour products on Etsy here.  Jessy also offers custom orders, so if you don’t see what you like, just ask!  Follow HomemadeDujour on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.  Also, use code GURLGONEGREEN for 10% off minimum purchases of $15 or more.

Mask Madness

Mask Madness

I’m kind of obsessed with clean masks, but for good reason.  They make my skin feel moisturized, revived…oh and let’s not forget the glow I get too!  Plus, masking is like having my own mini spa session, while in the comfort of my own home (a big deal when you’re a mama).  As an esthetician, I’ve realized the mark of a good mask is bringing  real nourishment to the skin.  In conventional masks, you find nothing but junk…serious toxic junk.  I looked up one of the most popular masks out on the market and you know what’s in it? A ton of chemicals!  What’s crazy is masks sit on your face for a good 15-30 minutes.  A long time for chemicals to be soaking into your skin…um scary!  And people wonder why their hormones are all messed up.

So now that you’ve tossed your carcinogenic masks, let’s chat about what to replace them with.

This mask is seriously so good.  The founder Leah is a saint, no joke.  I’ve gotten to know her on social media and she truly is the sweetest.  She creates all of her products by hand in Kaui, Hawaii.  Her mask is a little piece of heaven.  With ingredients like Chlorella, sea buckthorn, spirulina and raw honey, this mask is pure decadence.  A lot of masks moisturize after wearing, but you don’t notice a visible difference to the naked eye.  Not the case with the Mermaid Mask, you’ll be glowing!  It smells so insanely good too.  You’ll be tempted to eat it.  Also, the price point for this mask is crazy awesome…$22!  A serious steal!  This mask is great for everyone.  Acne skin, pre-mature, congestion, dryness and redness.  Oh and P.S. when you buy it you must know that there is this thing called Mermaid Mask Monday on social media- where all the mermaids come out and wear their mask!

This was one of the first masks I tried when transitioning to green beauty.  I knew after trying this my love for masking ran deep.  This mask is ideal for dry/irritated and mature skin types.  At the time I bought it, my skin was in a frenzy.  I had just found out I was pregnant and my skin was inflamed and irritated.  Not to mention dry patches were popping up.  My skin went from angry to happy after using this religiously for several months.  With manuka honey, aronia berry powder and amazonian white clay, the ingredient list is amazing and not to mention organic.  This mask really lives up to it’s name- healing mask.  It smells divine too! $60

I love this mask!  If you want to see a noticeable difference the minute you take off your mask, then this is it.  I had heard people rave about it in the green beauty community for quite sometime and let’s just say It did not disappoint.  Tata Harper has created some amazing skincare products, that are not only natural but perform.  So often a product can be clean, but it does’t do anything.  Tata’s products are the opposite.  Having tried several other products, I’m always impressed with the quality and difference I see in my skin.  The resurfacing mask is a gel like substance that looks clear when applied.   You leave it on for 30 minutes and bam, your left with that lit from within glow.  I love doing this in the morning before I put on my makeup.  It literally exfoliates and removes the dead skin cells, all while minimizing pores and redness.  You are left with revitalized skin.  It’s really more of a peel than a mask.  I use it once a week.  It is suitable for all skin types, but if you do have sensitive skin I would patch test before trying.  Another great perk about Tata products?  They can be found in mainstream stores like Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Sephora.  $55

The Problem Solver does just that, solves your skin’s problems.  It a little miracle in a bottle.  I use this on my skin after late nights, when I have a blemish or when my skin is just congested.  Unlike the others I’ve mentioned, this mask is a powder and doesn’t activate until you mix it with water.  I love May’s philosophy in doing it this way.  You are getting the full potency every time you use it, since it activates with water.  With ingredients like bamboo charcoal, raw cacao and soil nutrients, your skin will be in it’s own little wonderland.  My skin is renewed and revived after this mask.  Oh and did I mention it will literally last you forever??  The jar is huge!  Trust me, you need this in your life. $90

That’s my mask line up currently.  I have others I’m trying, but haven’t tested as long.  I’ll be sure to add them once I do a full review!  What are your favorite masks?  Do tell!
