Why We Love It?

  • Goat whey has demonstrated positive anti-inflammatory effects in the digestive system. Cow whey has shown increased inflammatory effects.

Protein Powder

Protein Powder

So I recorded a podcast back in June with Dr. Matt all about protein powder and it was a huge hit!  You can listen to it here.  A lot of people have since asked if the information from the podcast could be put into a blog post written form.  So here it is!  These are all the takeaways from the podcast.  Dr. Matt shared so many nuggets!

Why Take Protein:

  • Athletes-easy to get some quick protein that doesn’t feel heavy/helps build muscle
  • Mom’s
  • Busy Life/Anyone on the go

What you do NOT want to find in a protein: (basically any word that looks sketchy-question!)

  • Sucralose-synthetic sweetener
  • Aspartame-synthetic sweetener
  • Polysorbate 80
  • Maltodextrin
  • Polyethylene Glycol(basically myralax which is a laxative)
  • Any Isolate-(Whey Protein Isolate, Soy Protein Isolate, etc…) causes gas, bloating, diarrhea, increases allergies. Wreaks havoc on gut flora. Very easy to store because it’s been processed so much.
  • RBGH
  • Sodium caseinate
  • GMO’s
  • MSG
  • Hydrogenated anything
  • Soy Lecithin

What to look for in a protein:

  • Grass-fed/Grass-finished if it’s an animal protein
  • Organic
  • Little ingredient list as possible
  • Whey Protein Concentrate

Heavy Metals in Plant Based Proteins:

  • Can’t tell the heavy metal content by looking at the label
  • Pea, Rice, Hemp are all plant based proteins
  • Get 3rd party testing from the manufacturer(call/e-mail them and ask for the papers with the lab testing done and make sure there is a signature so you can go back to them and say this person signed off)
  • If they didn’t have testing done-then move on, not a good protein
  • Just because your protein was tested doesn’t mean it’s good though-make sure you see what the heavy metal levels are
  • The reason there is heavy metals in plant based proteins is because whatever is in the soil it soaks up.  So if the soil contains a lot of heavy metals then the plant is soaking that up. If you take pea protein for instance you essentially are eating 100’s of peas each time you’re taking your pea protein, so you want to make sure the the quality of the peas is good. Overtime that could add up to a lot of heavy metals if not careful.

What if a protein is cheaper:

  • Proteins are often cheaper because they skimp on quality ingredients and sourcing

Can I find a clean protein at Whole Foods or other health food stores:

  • It can still be hard to find a clean protein at your local health store or Whole Foods
  • Best thing to do is e-mail/call them and ask questions

Why should I drink protein 30-40 minutes after a workout:

  • Want cortisol to come down after workout
  • Helps to spike hormones in a good way after workout
  • Build muscle
  • 15 grams of protein is great after workout

Why you don’t want to blend a whey protein too much:

  • Whey collects air and the more powerful your blender the more air is collected
  • The air can cause you to feel bloated, have gas, and make you feel like the protein is just sitting in your stomach
  • Just add the protein in after you’ve blended all the ingredients
  • If you still feel bloated, gassy or like a ball is sitting in your stomach you may just have a bad protein

What protein is best:

  • Goat Whey Protein
  • Whey Protein Concentrate(best sources are going to be from New Zealand, Australia, or Germany-although really expensive)
  • Vegeterian- Pea Protein(however plant based proteins don’t contain all the amino acids)
  • If you add some rice and pea protein together you will get more of a complete protein since they both are missing certain amino acids

*Collagen is really popular now and is great for hair, skin, nails and joints. But it doesn’t build muscle tissue or immunity.

I personally take goat whey protein.  A lot of people haven’t heard of goat whey, but it’s really an amazing protein source.

Here’s why:

  • Goat whey has demonstrated positive anti-inflammatory effects in the digestive system. Cow whey has shown increased inflammatory effects.
  • Cow whey is considered allergenic whereas goat whey is considered hypoallergenic.
  • Whey protein is the “gold standard” for serious athletes. Goat whey is the “gold standard” of that “gold standard.”
  • Goat whey is amazing for our immune systems, supporting lean muscle growth and repair, as well as optimal body composition.
  • Goat whey has the full range of essential amino acids in ratios that best support the athlete in all of us.

The goat whey protein I take is called Activ Whey.  There are many reasons why I like it!

  • It is really light and doesn’t ever make me feel bloated. That’s because there is nothing added to fill up space, just the purest goat whey and flavoring.
  • Activ Whey is a goat whey protein that comes from goats that are grassfed all the way through their lifecycle. There are zero antibiotics or hormones used on the goats or the vegetation they eat from.
  • I personally know the creator and can vouch for the legitimacy of the protein and where it is sourced from.

Current Green Beauty/Living Faves

Current Green Beauty/Living Faves

It’s time for another great round up of some recent faves!  Sometimes there is just so many products I end up doing a round up post of them all.  A win/win for the company and for the reader.  This recent one is definitely full of some serious nuggets.  Everything from a new reusable sandwich bag, to some new green beauty concealers, to a few new green beauty/living boxes I’m loving.  All this and more!  So if you still have some Christmas shopping left to do you may want to take notes because this post is full of some serious goodies!

Vert Beauty Concealer Sticks and Pencil Eyeliners

Processed with VSCO with s2 preset

I had the pleasure of visiting Vert Beauty last October.  They have an actual store in Denver, Colorado and it’s so chic and cute!  I met the founder Amanda Hume and was instantly taken by her kindness and love for green beauty.  She helped me pick out some treats and shared with me some of her faves.  You could say by the end we were friends.  Fast forward and now Vert Beauty has their own Concealer Sticks and Eyeliners!  How cool.  Let’s first chat about the concealer sticks.  I haven’t found anything quite like these concealer sticks in green beauty.  They are a stick form(duh) and they need to be sharpened(non-mechanical). They glide effortlessly on the skin.  I love that they’re in stick form.  So easy to work with.  I apply them everywhere!  Under my nose to conceal redness, cheeks to hide hyper pigmentation, bridge of my nose/on my brow bone to highlight and of course under the eyes.  Anywhere you want to conceal they work.  I even outlined my lips for bright lipstick colors.  Helps to balance out redness and provide a clean matte canvas.  They last throughout the day and don’t look cakey.  I haven’t stopped reaching for these everyday.  On to the eyeliners.  These are pencil eyeliners(once again non-mechanical).  They come in so many fun colors.  A blue, green, purple, gold…I mean so many.  I noticed some of them glided on easier, while others were a little harder.  But I found once I warmed up each pencil a bit on my hand before application it helped it to glide on easier.  I really loved the colors Vert-a cross between a turquoise and jade and Bleu-a great navy.  They stayed even better when I applied a translucent powder on top to set them for the day.  The price point is so reasonable too!  $17 for the liners and $20 for the concealers. Check them out here at Vert Beauty.  They have a ton of other green beauty goodies too!

Art of Organics- November’s Skin Owl Box

Processed with VSCO with s2 preset

Their belief is really simple-You shouldn’t have to sacrifice your health for beauty.  I couldn’t agree more!  Their goal is to bring people the cleanest, best, and most luxe products.  Claire the founder, has always been a beauty junkie and on the quest to purge her own makeup bag, she realized she wanted to share her journey with others and raise awareness.  I noticed instantly after opening the box, the attention to detail.  They name their boxes each month, each follow a theme.  This month’s box followed the theme Grace and explored what it means to age with grace- I just love that.  From the eco-friendly packaging, to the beautiful aesthetic of it all, to the actual product inside-they just nailed it on every front.  The card inside describes the products in the box so well and gave directions for application.  The box is $38, with a value of $70+ and features each month 2-4 full size products.  They have high standards for their product selection, such as being cruelty free, organic and non-toxic.  They have more specifics on the ingredients they don’t use here on their website.

This month’s selection was Skin Owl, specifically their Neck+ and Eye+.  I had the privilege of meeting the founder of Skin Owl Annie Tevelin at IBE last year and she is the sweetest most down to earth person.  I think I talked her ear off for at least 45 minutes-opps!  The Neck+ is unlike anything I’ve used before for my neck.  It contours, and smooths to reveal an overall more youthful appearance and skin tone.  It even helps to decrease dark spots and crease marks.  After showering, I applied the oil to my face, neck and décolleté.  It feels cool to the touch, you can really feel the aloe in the formulation when you use it.  It makes your skin feel smooth and soft but not necessarily moisturized.  They recommend following with your moisturizer after application.  It dries quickly too!  My neck looked smoother for sure-it was like a mini face lift had happened all over.  The Eye+ I’ve had the pleasure of trying out in the past and let’s just say I’m a fan.  I really love this eye treatment for in the morning. It instantly perks up my eyes and brightens them.  I keep mine in the fridge and pull it out in the morning for even more stimulation.  It feels cool to the touch under the eyes and is more gel like than creamy.  A little goes a long way.  If you’ve been looking for an eye treatment in the morning to perk up your tired eyes, this is it.  The Neck+ retails for $68, while the Eye+ is $46.  But if you sign up for Art of Organics you could get all of this for $38-a steal indeed!  Sign up for Art of Organics here. Also,  be sure to get in on their gratitude sale going on until tonight at midnight EST. The code: 15KEEPSGIVING offers 15% off the first month of a monthly subscription and 15% off all longer length ones. They are sold out of the November box, so any new sign ups will start with the December “GEM” box.  Be sure to snag one!

Teri Miyahira Beauty-October 2016 Collection-

Processed with VSCO with s2 preset

Teri keeps killin’ it with her beauty boxes!  October’s selection was no different.  It included the Carefree Eyeshadow Palette, Brave Satin Lipstick, and Faux Vegan Mink False Eyelashes.  Plus, I’ve had the pleasure of testing out some of her vegan makeup brushes that scream luxe!  The Carefree Eyeshadow Palette was spot on for fall/winter.  With warm/bronzed browns, they perfectly fell in step with the season.  I love mixing them together to create a sultry brown smoky eye.  The compact that they come in is so chic.  It’s sleek black design with mirror is so classy.  The Brave lipstick quickly fell into my lipstick rotation.  It’s the perfect brick/brown for right now-can’t get enough.  It’s also super moisturzing-winning!  The Vegan Mink False Eyelashes were love at first sight.  Being a mom of two now, I can use any sort of eyelash lift I can get.  These were just the ticket.  They enhanced my eyes but didn’t look completely unrealistic.  I just popped these on in the morning and was good to go.  Great for a night out or if you just want a little more drama on your lashes for everyday.  The vegan makeup brushes are so soft.  Their sleek design is on point too.  Each of Teri’s boxes are full of 2-3 full size products.  For the full scoop on these luxe boxes and all the deets check out Teri’s site here.

Back to Basics-

Processed with VSCO with s2 preset

This is Back to Basics very first month and I was so excited to be one of the first to get to review it!  The box is unlike any box I’ve experienced so far.  First off the products are all full size.  It’s also not just a beauty box but a clean lifestyle box.  For example, this month their was laundry detergent, toothpaste, body wash, and a household cleaner in the box.  I love getting a box that is catered to my whole life.  It really is fun to see what each month will bring!  Back to Basics was founded by Ashleigh, a practicing homeopath who was so tired of seeing patients that were sick because of their environments.  She realized people were just unaware of their toxic environments and was determined to bring awareness.  Back to Basics was born!  Not only is there an Eco Chica box but also a box for the Gents too-how cool!  For $29.99 a month you get introduced to clean products but also get a list of the toxic ingredients to avoid.  I really love Ashleigh’s whole approach in educating the consumer.  Back to Basics is shaping the future in a brighter and healthier way-one box at a time.  I had the pleasure of chatting with Ashleigh and I could hear her passion come through, even over the phone.  This is a box that is here to stay!

So what was in November’s box?  Somer serious clean living loot!  If you’ve read my blog long enough you know I’m a huge fan of Kosmatology, so you can imagine my excitement when I saw their body wash in this month’s box.  This stuff is so clean and leaves my skin fresh and hydrated.  I’m obsessed with their body washes and hand soaps-faves!  I had seen David’s Toothpaste around for quite sometime but had steered clear of it because of the carrageenan in it and glycerin.  I brought up my concerns to Ashleigh and she said she had spoken with the founder of David’s Toothpaste and he assured her they only use carrageenan derived from seaweed.  I read about it more on their website here too. I really loved how their ingredients were listed on their website and why they use them.  As far as the glycerin, there is such a small amount and it’s derived from vegetable glycerin.  I had read previously that it can be associated with coating the teeth, similar to plastic wrap.  However, I’ve recently read contrary findings saying the opposite.  In the end, I feel comfortable using it.  So how did I like David’s toothpaste?  Loved it!  It looks just like a normal toothpaste does, in a tube.  It leaves my mouth feeling fresh and clean.  I also  love the mint flavor.  I’m sold!  A great toothpaste for those transitioning from conventional toothpastes.

Next up was Molly’s Suds Laundry Powder.  This laundry powder is a winner all around.  It’s just works!  With simple, clean and effective ingredients this laundry powder doesn’t mess around.  I’m hooked!  It even cleaned my hub’s smelly workout clothes-it’s that good.  My clothes smell fresh and clean after washing.  The last product in the November box was Bon Ami.  This is a specialty cleaning powder that’s been around since 1886.  This powder only has two ingredients-Feldspar, and Tallow Soap.  To be honest, I was a little hesitant using Feldspar.  I’ve read some articles about Feldspar being an irritant to the respiratory system. In the Bon Ami it is in powder form and easier to breathe in.  I’ve always been conscious of breathing in powders, even before going green.  Call me crazy but it always kind of weirded me out.  That being said, Bon Ami does get an A rating from EWG and it cleans really well. It’s not something I would use on my counters where there might be food but on sinks, toilets for sure.  I still wear a mask-I know call me crazy!  Considering most conventional cleaners have phthalates, dyes, bleach etc, this is a great alternative.  Especially if you crave a powder cleaner similar to Comet.  Since Ashleigh, the founder of the box is a homeopath she tests people (clients) and makes sure they test positively, meaning the product benefits their health, not negatively.  Well that sums up the Back to Basics box. They are offering all my readers 25% off now for a month using code: GURL25.  Be sure to snag one of these with the discount!  You’ll get 25% off your first order. If you prepay for a gift subscription of multiple months though, it’ll be 25% off that entire purchase-such a good deal! Don’t miss out-Shop here!

Stasher-Silicone Reusable Bags

Processed with VSCO with s2 preset

Wow, where do I even start with these?!  I literally said to myself where have these been all my life?  But that’s how I feel.  They are the first and only self sealing, air tight, non-plastic bag in the world.  I’ve been using reusable bags but nothing that is as durable and easy to use.  Stasher bags close so easily with their push press seal, you just push along the seam and it seals-so convenient to use.  Plus, their size is just like using a plastic baggie without using plastic-score!  They are made from 100% food grade silicone and are soft and durable.  The sandwich size comes in the colors Aqua, Clear, Slate and three print designs too, plus two snack sizes.  You can even write on a Stasher bag with a dry erase marker and then wipe off afterwards-does it get much better?!  I’ve been storing anything and everything in these-they’re a serious game changer.  They’re so easy to clean too, just put them in the top rack of the dish washer open, or wash by hand with warm soapy water.  You can even heat them up in the microwave, just be sure to leave the bag open.  When  cooking sous-vide, the bag must remain closed.  These replace thousands of plastic bags!  Plus, you won’t even notice a difference because they’re so easy to use.  I would recommend them to anyone-they’re a must! $11.99

Henne- The Lip Collection-

Processed with VSCO with s2 preset

When I opened the Henne Lips Collection box I was blown away at how chic and luxe it looked.  I hardly wanted to use it. But if you know me you would know that wasn’t in the cards!  I dug into the box and didn’t look back.  I’ve used Henne Lip Balm for a little over a year now and it’s the real deal when it comes to moisturizing your lips.  If you haven’t found a lip balm yet that delivers, then I highly recommend this.  Once I got past the lip balm in the box I headed straight to the Rose Diamond exfoliant…wow this product smells so good!  The Rose Diamond combines sugar with coconut oil, shea butter, beeswax and other organic ingredients to bring your lips the ultimate in exfoliation.  The combination of this exfoliant with the Henne Lip balm is truly a luxury your lips must try.  Oh but I’m not done!  The box contains Henne’s newest product, the Henne Luxury Lip Balm V2.  It”s the same lip balm we’ve all come to love but in a tube form-doesn’t get much better!  I love, love that they put it in a lipstick tube-genius.  No digging your fingers into a jar-just swipe across your lips.  This box is such a great gift idea too!  If not for you, then for someone else! $59

That sums up my current favorite green beauty/living products and boxes.  Be sure to snag up some of these for yourself and as gifts!  Have you used any of these products or subscribed to any of these boxes?

Green Beauty Round Up

Green Beauty Round Up

I do these posts from time to time.  Often I get an accumulation of products that are standouts and instead of doing a ton of smaller posts, I just do one big post.  People seem to really like them-I’m guessing because everything is in one place.  It’s also really beneficial for the companies because they get more exposure then if I was to do them individually.  A win/win!

I’ve come across some serious green loot recently and had to share some recent faves!

Malaya Organics-

I’ve sampled Malaya before but was excited when the owner Katya Slepak reached out and sent me some of their goodies.  They have a whole new look and I was excited to see it.  The products are beautiful themselves and the new look is so chic.  I’m a big fan of their face serum, it melts right into your skin leaving a dewy finish.  It isn’t overly scented either- perfect subtle scent.  I’m also digging their Calming Botanical Bath, talk about relaxation at it’s finest!  I love a good bath and these are the perfect thing to help de-stress.  A mini spa right in your own home.  The facial steam is also a great de-stressor for not only the skin but the mind as well.  It helps to pull out toxins and gives the skin a glow.  The body oils are also luxurious.  I’m a big fan of the Woods scent.  It’s smells just like the name suggests-woodsy with a hint of citrus.  I love how the body oils feel on the skin, a truly decadent oil!  Last but not least their hair oil is perfect for giving parched hair a good drink of water.  I lightly apply it to my hair and style as usual.  For a more intense treatment I add it all over my hair and leave it on overnight.  My hair is silky and smooth the next day.  Did I mention their products are organic, biodynamic, wild crafted and ethically sourced-hello!  The products are housed in luxe glass bottles.  The whole line screams spa-a truly decadent line.  Use coupon code: GURLGONEGREEN for 15% off and snag some Malaya Organics here.

Teri Miyahira-

I was so excited when I received my first box from Teri!  Teri has her own green beauty YouTube channel and now has created a monthly subscription beauty box.  The box has become so popular that now there is a waitlist for the November box because it’s sold out!  All the makeup is vegan, and cruelty-free.  I have been loving the boxes!  The Harmony Compact Color for face and eyes has been a fave of mine.  This product is so versatile.  You can use them as eyeshadows, but also as a blush, bronzer, contour or highlight.  Such a great multi-tasker.  I’ve also been digging the pressed eyeshadow color in Strength. Goes on so smooth and stays put.  The crushed colors offer the perfect shimmer for going out, and this mama needs all the help she can get!  Oh and can we talk about her brushes- so luxe!  They are so soft and beautiful, love the rose gold.  She also has skincare products.  I loved sampling the gel cleanser and toner/mist.  I couldn’t believe how much came in each box.  This is one beauty box that is here to stay!  Grab your’s here.

Loving Naturals-

If you’ve followed me long enough, you know I’m crazy for Loving Natural’s Sunscreen for babies.  It has only a handful of stellar ingredients.  Plus, it works and keeps my babies skin protected from the sun.  It doesn’t leave that ghostly hue on the skin either like most natural sunscreens.  They recently sent me their Anti-aging cream too.  I was amazed at how moisturizing it was and how good my skin felt in the morning.  I have dry skin and even used this during the day and it wasn’t too greasy.  I love that it’s budget friendly compared to other natural anti-aging creams.  If you haven’t tried their sunscreens you’re missing out!  Check out all their products here.

Square Organics-

I love me a protein bar!  Especially since becoming a mom,  it’s often easy to skip meals because of time-can I get a witness?  I end up making a smoothie or grabbing a bar.  These ones have been perfect.  Not only are they satisfying but full of organic ingredients.  They honestly taste like a candy bar!  All of them are chocolate coated with a different flavor on the inside.  My personal favorites are the coconut and mint.  I’ve even been grabbing them mid-day for a quick snack since I’ve been nursing my 8 week old like crazy.  They have hit the spot for those sudden hunger urges.  If it’s been hard for you to find a protein bar that tastes good and has decent ingredients, then check out Square Organics- you won’t be disappointed.  Also, use coupon code: gurlgonegreen for 20% off a box! The Simply Co.-

I love testing out new natural laundry detergents!  I’m always curious if they’ll actually work.  I’m sure I’m not alone.  Well, I have good news, The Simply Co. is some legit stuff.  With only 4 ingredients: Baking soda, washing soda, and Organic Vegan castile soap (+ Organic essential oils), this laundry powder packs a big punch. It comes in this sleek glass container-so chic looking.  You simply add one to two tablespoons to your laundry, depending on the how big the load is.  You can use it in standard machines and HE machines.  The proof is in the pudding they say and I can say that this powder successfully made my clothes smell good and clean.  Did I mention the ingredients?!  They’re also vegan, organic and cruelty-free.  I’m in awe of the power of them.  The laundry powder comes in lavender and unscented.  If you’ve been looking for a natural laundry detergent with little ingredients that gets the job done-this may be just your ticket!  The whole concept of The Simply Co. is pretty awesome too.  Founded by a blogger who wanted the most natural cleaning products.  They aim to protect the environment by creating sustainable products.  Use coupon code: GURLGONEGREEN for 10% off your purchase.  Shop here.
