How To Reverse PCOS Holistically With Kate Kordsmeier

How To Reverse PCOS Holistically With Kate Kordsmeier

In episode #31 we are learning how to heal PCOS holistically with Kate Kordsmeier.  For nearly a decade, Kate was a full-time freelance food and travel writer and recipe developer–you can find her work in over 125 magazines, newspapers and websites, including USA Today, EatingWell, Cooking Light, Travel + Leisure, Shape, FITNESS, Women’s Health, The Washington Post, Clean Eating, Vegetarian Times, Wine Enthusiast, SELF and Real Simple.

In October 2015, after being diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), Leaky Gut Syndrome (IBS), and hypothyroidism, and subsequently healing her symptoms naturally, she created Root + Revel. Though she’s a food writer—it’s literally her job to eat and report on the world’s most delicious foods—and a food lover, who believes strongly that life is not worth living without fried chicken, cheese and wine, she’s also seen firsthand the power of nutrition and how much the food we eat affects the way we feel. After her diagnosis, she was blown away by the rapid transformation she saw in her own body from simple, natural and holistic lifestyle changes. Truly, the food she ate and the natural products she used (and the toxic products she tossed!) have helped her live a near symptom-free life.  You can learn more about her diagnosis, 80-20 lifestyle and how she strikes the balance between eating well and feeling well here.

Beauty Heroes May Discovery: OSEA

Beauty Heroes May Discovery: OSEA

It’s another month and with it brings Beauty Heroes May Discovery: OSEA!  This month is a fun one. We are seeing a cleanser and a body polish in the box.  I haven’t sampled much from OSEA so it was nice to get to try their products.  As always if you haven’t heard of Beauty Heroes or you’re not sure what it’s all about, then keep reading below.  If you have, just skip ahead to the juicy review!

Beauty Heroes was founded by Jeannie Jarnot.  A longtime spa director herself and healthy beauty expert.  I had the pleasure of meeting Jeannie at IBE, and she is truly one of the sweetest people.  Beauty Heroes is a monthly beauty service that selects only the best clean beauty brands.  Each month you can find one to two full size truly heroic products in each box.  The products typically range from skincare to haircare products.  However, every 3 months Beauty Heroes offers a makeup box as well that’s optional for members or non-members.  I absolutely love their “Use Less, Love More” philosophy.  By only getting one or two products, you allow yourself to truly experience them.  Of course you can trust their picks, as they are strict on their integrity standards.  What’s not to love about this whole concept?  As a Beauty Heroes Ambassador, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to be part of such a movement.

On to the review…

So this month we had the privilege of seeing OSEA in the box.  This brand is truly unique.  I was so intrigued by the founder Jenefer’s story of how she started it.  She was inspired by her grandmother who credits the ocean to healing her.  She had been on bedrest after a severe leg injury.  Her grandmother recalls having a dream about the sea and the next day went for a swim.  A few weeks later her grandmother was healed!  Jenefer went to her roots when creating OSEA.  From what she learned from her grandmother of the healing properties of the ocean and her knowledge, she chose seaweed as the base of her skincare line.  Seaweed contains powerful minerals and ingredients to help restore and nourish the skin.

Undaria Body Polish-

This body polish is unlike any I’ve used.  It is creamy in consistency but yet strong enough to remove and exfoliate unwanted dry skin.  After using it my skin looks slightly pink and plump.  It takes dull skin and gives it a good polish, revealing the brightest and prettiest skin.  Upon opening it, you’re greeted with scents of lavender and Sweet Melissa.  It awakens your senses and revitalizes your whole body.  It exfoliates the skin with powdery grains of pumice, acai, and guarana.  I get my body wet first, and then apply the body polish and use circular motions to rub it in.  A serious skin treat!

Ocean Cleanser-

This cleanser is a definite fave!  I love that it comes in a frosted glass bottle- so chic.  It’s such an overall soothing cleanser, yet highly effective. It removes all my my makeup and grime from the day- yes even my stubborn eye makeup.  I get my skin damp first and then apply several pumps to my hands.  Then I rub in circular motions all over my face.  After rinsing with water my skin feels so hydrated, and clean.  Not stripped or dry.  It does such a great job of imparting hydration to the skin, and nourishing it with vitamins and minerals.  Did I mention it smells like candy?!  The lime really stands out to me.  There also are notes of juniper, and cypress.  A great all around cleanser- can’t get enough!

This month’s Beauty Heroes is definitely a special skin treat.  I truly have loved getting to know the brand OSEA and experiencing their luxe creations.  I really feel each product is thoughtfully and carefully made.  If you’ve never been a Beauty Heroes subscriber I recommend signing up! This month is too good to pass up and word on the street is it will go fast.  The value this month was $92!  You can sign up here!

Products I actually bought as a Beauty Blogger

Products I actually bought as a Beauty Blogger

So want to know the products I actually bought as a beauty blogger?! Well, I’m about to divulge.  It’s no secret I get sent a lot of product.  As a beauty blogger it’s both one of the perks and a necessity to stay in the know of what’s working and what’s not.  However, there are products that I buy myself because they’re just so good and because I’m not above buying product myself.

I wanted to share my current picks with you in hopes you might find something you like as well.  These are tried and true faves that never get old.  But are necessary staples in my green beauty arsenal!  I’ve got a little of everything, something for skin, hair and makeup.   Keep reading to find out what I can’t get enough of!

Leahlani Skincare Mermaid Mask-

If you’ve been around green beauty for even a hot minute you’ve heard of Leahlani Skincare.  Where would green beauty be without Leahlani Skincare?!  But really, it’s true.  I just can’t get enough of their Mermaid Mask and I know I’m not alone.  This mask is all around lovely.  Upon opening the frosted glass jar you’re greeted with the smell of the Hawaiian Islands where this decent skincare line is created.  I can just feel all the love that goes into each jar.  The formula is still handmade by Leah, the founder.  This beauty mask is filled with raw honey, spirulina, chlorella, green microalgae, kaolin sea clay and a plethora of wonderful flower oils.  It was the first green beauty mask I tried and saw a noticeable difference in my skin instantly.  My skin was glowing!  Not only that but my skin felt hydrated and decongested.  My skin is less red, and more even after using.  If you’ve been on the fence about purchasing a facial mask- just do it and snag this one!  I promise you won’t be disappointed.  A serious skin treat!  It’s also a great gift too!  Get your Leahlani Mermaid Mask here!

Also, check out all my favorites from Leahlani Skincare- read my full review here!

Osmia Organics Soap-

Again, another brand staple in green beauty.  Just the name sounds sexy doesn’t it?!  The founder Sarah is an ER doctor and really knows her stuff.  If you’ve seen her describe her soaps then you’ve probably bought one!  She makes them sound irresistible and then you buy one and realize she was absolutely right!  I was never a bar soap girl until the first day I laid eyes on an Osmia bar soap and I was sold.  First, the packaging is so luxe.  Wrapped in a partially-recycled, watercolor paper and hemp twine that is all biodegradable and compostable.  You’ll love the soap before you even use it.  Then once you unwrap it, you see this beautiful bar of soap with these waves at the top.  It’s just a thing of beauty.  All the soaps are made with organic and natural plant butters, organic and wildcrafted herbs, high quality organic oils and organic or wildcrafted essential oils.  Great lengths go to making this so much more than just a bar of soap and that’s why I just can’t stray from them.  There’s nothing artificial in these soaps!  They have seasonal scents that come out throughout the year and their staples too.  One of their staples I always have to have on hand is their coffee mint soap.  SO good.  Use it in the morning and you just may not need your morning cup of coffee!  I also love to sample the seasonal scents.  I just picked up a bar from their Spring Collection, and it’s all around lovely!  Get your Osmia bar soap here!

Also, check out all my favorites from Osmia Organics- read my full review here!

Aila Beauty Nail Polish-

My nails can’t stop sporting Aila nail polish for good reason- it’s the best!  The color and pigment in the polish is so vibrant.  It’s easy to apply and is long lasting.  Plus, I love the color selection.  My favorite is Bodega, but I also love I’m Naked, I’m Naked and Namaste.  Some nail polish can feel goopy and hard to work with but not Aila- it glides on the nails.  I bring this with me when I have my nails done and they love the formula!  The founder, Dr. Cary Gannon knows her stuff as a Board Certified Podiatric Surgeon.  She wanted to create a nail polish line that not only worked but also was free of the common harmful toxins lurking in conventional nail polish.  Well she did it and I can’t get enough.  Besides her nail polish colors, I’m also addicted to her better than gel topcoat.  It keeps my nails chip free for 5 days!  And it rates a 1 on EWG!  Get your Aila Nail Polishes here!

Also, check out all my favorites from Aila Beauty and why you want to avoid certain ingredients in nail polish- read my full review here!

Josh Rosebrook Styling Cream-

This styling cream is a favorite for my hubs and I.  He loves how it gives hold to his hair and definition without the “wet” look.  I love using it after I’ve curled my hair to add separation and texture.  It offers the hold but doesn’t get crunch or leave my hair feeling too greasy or weighed down- which I love! The ingredients are so pure too and even help stimulate and feed your scalp for optimal hair growth.  Plus, it smells so good, with essential oils of cardamom, peach and fennel.  My hubs can’t not have this and I feel the same!  Grab your Styling Cream here!

Also, check out all my favorites from Josh Rosebrook- Read my full review here!

Gressa Minimalist Corrective Serum Foundation-

This foundation is different than any other foundation I’ve used.  It’s actually a facial serum and foundation in one.  It comes in a bottle with a dropper.  Not only are you putting on a great foundation everyday, but nutrient vitamins your skin will drink up.  The serum doesn’t feel oily like you might think.  But it feels similar to a really watered down, thin paint.  I applied a few drops onto my fingers, and applied it on my face-quite like I would a facial serum.  Once it came in contact with my skin it dries, and creates this flawless finish.  It’s a matte finish but not dry looking.  The foundation covered redness, and gave my skin an overall pulled together look.  However, it looked like I wasn’t wearing anything-which I loved!  It gives you a polished look, but looks very natural at the same time.  Doesn’t every woman want that?  My skin can breathe and it doesn’t feel like I’m wearing a mask.  I also, love how it doens’t feel dry at all, and it looks just as good after a full day.  A little goes a long way too!  I love having this on hand to mix with other foundations too.  If you’re looking for a foundation that makes you feel comfortable in your own skin, then this is it.  I’m wearing the color 3.5.  Get your Gressa Minimalist Corrective Serum Foundation here!

Why I love Raw Veggie Bread

Why I love Raw Veggie Bread

Why I love raw veggie bread?  I thought you would never ask?!  Ok, you actually have and that’s why I’m finally writing this post.  My friend Deanna from @realfoodlab on Instagram is the creator and expert behind raw veggie bread and I totally blame her for getting me hooked- in the BEST possible way!

I remember seeing Deanna post about Raw Veggie Bread before and being totally intrigued by the whole process.  A bread that is full of veggies,  so nutrient dense and actually tastes good? I mean sign me up already!  Even though the bread sounded amazing, I was intimidated to start.  In fact I just didn’t for the longest time.  I had all the tools- dehydrator, veggies and recipes but couldn’t bring myself to make it.  After talking with others I’ve learned I’m not the only one who’s done this!  It does seem intimidating, but can I let you in on a secret?  It’s not!  I don’t know how many people after they started to make it realized how easy it is and wonder why they didn’t start sooner.

Bottom line: Just start making it!  The more you make it the better you’ll get.

One thing I can’t recommend enough is to buy the E-Course from Deanna from @realfoodlab.  It’s the secret sauce!   A lot of people have complained to me that it doesn’t work, or they haven’t gotten their breads to turn out.  But when I ask them if they’ve bought the course they tell me they haven’t.  Trust me when I say the process of making the raw veggie bread will go SO much easier when you buy the E-Course.  Deanna the creator of the course has been doing raw veggie bread for 10 years and knows her stuff.  She literally has come up with over 100 recipes in her E-Book and walks you through the process in her 7 videos in the course too.  If you want to save yourself time and money then get the course!  She knows just the right variations to make the bread turn out great each time.

Get the E-course here!

What does the course include:

  • 103 page eBook that includes raw veggie bread recipe book and manual
  • 7 detailed how-to-video tutorials- learn how to transform boring veggies into tasty breads, wraps and crackers
  • Veggie bread trouble shooting lesson
  • Home-made nut butter tutorial
  • Nut-free and seed-free options
  • Plus, creative ways to get your child to eat more veggies
  • Dozens of low-carb and keto friendly desserts
  • Bonus: Lifetime Acces to bonus recipes and tutorials

It’s kind of amazing the amount of content you get for the price of $79!  I have the course and was blown away by the amount of info. Deanna gave.  I felt so empowered and ready to start making raw veggie bread.

I did an Instagram Live with Deanna recently to help people see how easy it is to make the raw veggie bread and answer some questions.  You can watch the video here!  I also have received a lot of questions since talking about it on Instagram and Facebook.  Below I’m answering all of the most asked questions.

What’s in raw veggie bread?

Veggie bread is a combination of nuts, seeds, veggies, oils, herbs and spices.  The combination gives you such a nutrient punch.  From healthy fats to antioxidants- you’re body will thank you!

How I eat the raw veggie bread?

So many ways! Here are a few of my favorites.  Instead of using a traditional wrap I just use a veggie wrap!  From egg wraps to turkey wraps- I mean if you can wrap it then I veggie wrap it!  I also love cutting up the bread into cracker sizes and using it as a dip in hummus or any other type of dip.  It’s also SO good on it’s own.  The flavors in the raw veggie bread come out so vividly in the bread.  Trust me when I say it will be hard to not stop eating it.  It’s addicting!  We also love using it as a patty for hamburgers, the list is endless.

I’ve never eaten so many veggies in my life!

How many times a week do I make it?

I make the raw veggie bread twice a week usually.  I make two batches typically each time.  It ends up accounting for two recipes I make from Deanna’s eBook.  The dehydrator has trays and I end up with 4 trays filled each time I make it.  Sometimes 5 trays depending on the recipe.  This is split between my husband and two daughters who are 3 1/2 and 17 months.  They like eating their raw veggie bread with hummus especially!

Do you buy your produce all at once?

I do!  I buy everything on Sunday usually and then will make a batch that day and then another batch on Wednesday night or Thursday.  This ensures we always have veggie bread.  I’ve learned my veggies are great even after being in the fridge for a couple days.  If you’re concerned about your veggies going bad, check out these OXO Good Grips GreenSaver Produce Keeper !

Do you store veggie bread in fridge or on counter?

I store my veggie bread on the counter in a Stasher Reusable Silicone Food Bag usually.  If we are going to be gone and not eat it right away I’ll store it in the fridge. But we eat it so quick I never have to worry about it going bad!  If you like your veggie bread extra moist, then you may want to stick it in the fridge just to make sure it doesn’t get moldy.

What dehydrator do you use?

Yes, a dehydrator does make the raw veggie bread work.  Some people have asked if they can use an oven.  You could try but the whole point is to keep all the enzymes intact by using a temp of 115 or lower.  Deanna goes over this in her course too.  I use the Excalibur dehydrator.  There are many different models.  But they all look about the same and work great!  You can get them off Amazon for a great deal, especially if you get a used one.  Typically the used ones aren’t really used but just opened and then returned.  A great way for you to save some money!

One thing I wanted to mention too is the kale chip recipes you get in the eBook.  I’ve never tasted kale chips that were so good until I had Deanna from @realfoodlab kale chips- SO tasty!  We makes these weekly and my daughters love them too.

Deanna answers so many questions in her course too.  If you want to take your healthy eating to the next level then get the course and start becoming a raw bread machine!  Get the course here!
