Huut Organic Egyptian Cotton Sheets Review

Huut Organic Egyptian Cotton Sheets Review

I’m so excited to share my Huut organic Egyptian cotton sheets review with you!  I’ve tried many organic sheets in my day but never Egyptian cotton sheets that were organic.  Sheets are one thing that needs to be detoxed quickly if possible.  The toxic load really adds up over time.  Keep reading to hear of the toxic burden conventional sheets pose.

Since we spend about a 1/3 of our life in bed it’s important to know what were sleeping on.  Cotton is one of the most heavily sprayed crops.  Being doused with synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.  However, that’s not the only thing we should be concerned about.  Sheets often contain formaldehyde, and toxic dyes too.  There are also toxic softeners that are used now on bedding, creating a recipe for a toxic sleep experience!

What to look for when buying organic sheets?

  • Look for sheets that are certified organic by the GOTS- Global Organic Textile Standard.  For more info. on GOTS click here. This standard ensures the product is made without any toxic chemicals and that at least 90% of fibers are organic.  Also, no child or slave labor.  It’s peace of mind when buying the sheets if you see this label.  It means the sheets were made using pure and clean standards.
  • Avoid sheets or blankets that say “Wrinkle Resistant”, “Easy Care”, or “Permanent Press.”  These words indicate that formaldehyde resin was used in the process and it will NOT rinse out.
  • BE AWARE- just because a sheet set says “organic cotton” does not mean they’re certified organic.  It may indicate the cotton was grown organically but after that the fabric was processed with toxic chemicals.
  • Look for Oeko- Tex Certified Sheets.  These sheets may not be grown organically but they are tested for unhealthy chemicals in the final product.  These often tend to be a little less expensive and easier to find. For more on Oeko- Tex Certification click here.

Naturpedic Mattress Review

Naturpedic Mattress Review

So excited to finally share with you guys my Naturpedic mattress review!

*I was gifted my Naturpedic mattress from the company. However, thoughts and reviews are my own.

I had the pleasure of testing out the EOS Classic Organic King Size Mattress.  The specific one I received was the medium latex with plush coils.  My husband and I both prefer a soft mattress!  We had gone to a store that carried organic/natural mattresses in the Seattle area first before choosing our mattress.  We got to test out different types of Naturpedic mattresses.  In the end we knew we wanted the EOS Classic with medium latex and plush coils.  It was so soft and felt dreamy just laying on it in the store.  I couldn’t wait to start sleeping on it at home!

Naturpedic offers options for everyone in your family from baby, to child, all the way up to adult and something for every budget- which I appreciate!  You can customize the firmness too depending on what you want.  For ex. you can have it be firmer or softer on each side depending on what your partner and you want. My husband and I both chose the medium latex with plush coils but we could have each chosen a different option if we wanted.  If for some reason you weren’t happy with the firmness you can exchange it for a different option within 90 days– pretty cool!

I was first introduced to Naturpedic over 4 years ago when I was searching for an organic mattress for my baby girl.  At the time I hadn’t started to detox our bedroom yet and was learning all about the toxic load conventional mattresses can bring.  I ended up choosing their organic crib mattress for our daughter and have loved it.  Since they say we spend a 1/3 of our lives sleeping it’s important to consider the bed you’re sleeping on.  I remember finding it alarming to learn all about the toxic ingredients in mattresses!  From flame retardants, VOC’s, and formaldehyde- the toxic load can be scary.  Not too mention, mattress companies are not required to disclose all the chemicals they use in order to make their mattresses compliant with mattress regulations.  It’s also important to mention that many companies may claim to be organic, natural but actually have no certifications backing up these claims.

When I’m searching for a mattress I want to make sure it’s certified organic.  Then I know it’s met third party testing.  Look for the labels, GOTS, GOLS, and GREENGUARD.  Naturpedic meets all these certifications, plus so many more such as Formaldehyde Free Verified, OCS100 Organic Content Standard, Non-GMO verified, and Made Safe Verified.

You can read all about their certifications here!

Here’s a list of ingredients they avoid:

NO Flame Retardants or Flame Retardant Barriers
NO Memory Foam or other forms of Polyurethane Foam
NO Soybean or Biobased Foam (polyurethane foam with soybean oil mixed in)
NO Synthetic Latex Rubber
NO Harmful Glues or Adhesives
NO GMO Cotton or other GMO fibers
NO Shoddy Insulator Pads

Unboxing/Putting The Mattress Together-

When we received the Naturpedic mattress it came in several boxes.  I know sounds interesting to put the mattress together huh?  But it’s SO easy!  It comes in 4 boxes and there is a box that’s marked open me first with the instructions in it.  So you’re all set.  Then it walks you through the whole process step by step.  It was super easy to set up.  It comes with an encasement which essentially houses the mattress parts.  My hubs laid that out first on top of our bed.  Then we opened the box that had the coil support- one for each side of the bed since we have a king.  My hubs put those in.  Then we we opened the next box that had the 3 inch comfort layers and put those on top of the coils.  Then we zipped up the encasement and we were all set- easy peasy!  My hubs was even impressed with how simple the whole process was.

I have a video I posted to my stories of the whole process.  You can watch it below.

Our Thoughts-

Husband-

After having slept on it for almost 3 months I can honestly say we LOVE it!  My husband once a week tells me how much he loves the mattress- no joke!  He said it’s kept him feeling cooler in warm months- which says a lot since he tends to run warm.  He also likes how it feels soft but not too soft.  He went on a business trip and all I heard the whole time he was gone was how excited he was to come back home to his mattress!  He said he’s slept better- which I agree and I’m wondering if it has to do with not breathing in toxic fumes?  He has allergies and used to sneeze all the time at night- now he doesn’t!

Suzi-

I agree with my husband.  I feel so much cooler than I did with our last mattress.  It also feels supportive but not hard or too firm.  I also like how breathable everything feels.  I truly look forward to going to bed each night!  I love knowing we aren’t breathing in harmful fumes when we’re sleeping and our body isn’t absorbing toxic chemicals either.  It did have a faint smell when we first opened it.  But it wasn’t a chemical smell just a subtle unboxing smell in my opinion.  Once it was out for a day I didn’t smell anything.

My husband and I both can’t recommend this mattress enough!  Check out all that Naturpedic has to offer here!  Also check out their store finder to find a store near you! It really has exceeded our expectations and we are a hard sell!  I’m not getting compensated for this post, it is my opinions but my they did send my the mattress.  I also have a Naturpedic Baby organic baby mattress that I’ve had since my first daughter was born and we have loved it!  We’ve used it for both of our daughters and can’t recommend it enough.  Overall, our experience with Naturpedic has been amazing!

Best Organic Pillow

Best Organic Pillow

Have you been searching for the best organic pillow like I was?  Well, if you have don’t worry, I’ve got your back!  I’ve tested out many options and I’m here to report on my favorites.  Finding a pillow shouldn’t be a hard process, but it can be if you don’t know where to start.  I take the guess work out so you can find your perfect pillow, minus the toxic load.

So why should you avoid conventional pillows?

Well, for starters most pillows are either filled with polyester, or cotton.  Polyester contains a toxic chemical ethylene glycol, most commonly known as the deadly substance in anti-freeze.  Cotton contains harmful herbicides and pesticides- many are carcinogenic.  If you think about the amount of time you spend sleeping on your pillow it adds up to a toxic load.  Even memory foam pillows are a toxic recipe since they’re off gassing VOC’s(volatile organic compounds).  As you sleep you’re breathing in all those harmful substances.  These VOC’s have been known to cause a host of problems from irritation to the throat, nose, eyes, headaches, nausea, damage to liver, kidneys and nervous system, some of the organic compounds have even been found to cause cancer in humans.  No thanks!

Besides the toxic load it puts on your body, investing in a conventional pillow also puts a toxic load and burden on the environment.  The herbicides and pesticides are then thrown back into our environment where they end up in our streams, lakes and rivers.  Then they make their way into our water streams.  I think sometimes people forget that when you purchase something you are casting a vote for the kind of world we live in.  Good or bad- it’s up to us to make our voice heard!

As you can see picking up a new pillow requires a little more thought than just going to Target.  Whenever I think about detoxing my home, I really have to stop and think about what kind of impact this will have on my health.  In my opinion, pillows are pretty high on the priority list.  Since you spend so much time sleeping, the toxic load of your pillow adds up.  I want the peace of mind knowing what I lay my head on at night is not negatively impacting my health.

Something to think about…

I’ve seen “organic” pillows popping up in Costco or Target and other major retailers that aren’t necessarily organic.  Allow me to explain.  Marketers are catching on and realizing consumers want to see the word organic.  So they’re putting organic on anything and everything these days.  I’ll see “organic” pillows at these stores for $10 or $15- which isn’t possible if it’s truly organic.  What they really mean is the cotton sheet encasing the fill of the pillow is organic but not the actual fill of the pillow.  Which can be hard to know unless you’ve done your research.  Bottom line: don’t be fooled by marketers and always ask lots of questions!  If it seems to good to be true it often is.

So what materials should you look for in an organic pillow?

  • Organic Cotton- Make sure it is certified GOTS ensuring it has gone through testing to vouch for it’s pureness. Cotton is a firmer option, but not the firmest.  More of a medium firmness.
  • Organic Wool- Naturally flame resistant and pest resistant.  Also, naturally microbial.  It’s also comfortable in the summer and winter because of it’s insulative properties.  Some people can be allergic to wool, so something to consider.
  • Organic Buckwheat- These pillows are made from buckwheat hulls.  They offer firm support for your head.  They are great at circulating the air, which helps you stay cool throughout the night.  They’re also naturally resistant to pests.
  • Kapok- It’s a natural fiber that comes from the Ceiba Tree in Central America.  This is a vegan option for those who like a down pillow. It’s fluffy like a down pillow but plant based.  It has an overall lighter feel than cotton as well.
  • Latex- Shredded latex is great for those who like a soft pillow.  Your head will sink into these pillows.  They will keep you cooler too.  It is similar to conventional memory foam but without the toxic chemicals. It’s also mold and mite resistant, 100% biodegradable, and even antimicrobial.

Ok, now that you know the different types of materials to look for in a safe natural pillow, let me review the natural pillow options I’ve personally tried.

White Lotus Home sent me 3 different pillow options to try.  They are store that offers pure and natural mattresses, bedding, and home furnishings all made in the USA.  It’s your one stop shop to clean up your bedroom!  When I was choosing my pillow options to try out they were so helpful.  Walking me through the whole process and asking questions to ensure I had the best options for how I sleep.

I ended up with the Shredded Latex pillow for my husband, the 100% Organic Cotton pillow for myself and the Kapok Travel pillow to try out as well.

Shredded Latex Pillow- My husband LOVES this pillow!  I’m not just saying that.  He probably tells me at least twice a week how much he likes his pillow.  He had been on me for  while to pick up a new pillow.  He’s a side sleeper and likes his pillow to have some softness with it, but still offer some support.  The shredded latex pillow hit the nail on the head for him.  He said he’s never had a pillow he’s loved more!  The overall weight of the pillow is pretty heavy, it reminds me of a down pillow a little.  What’s great about White Lotus Home is you can customize the fill amount.  Just get a zippered case for the pillow when selecting the type of pillow and you’ll be able to take latex out if it’s too much.  I love this feature!  I did try my husband’s pillow too and I have to say I really loved it as well.  It offers the support I like but still felt fluffy.

100% Organic Cotton- So this is the pillow I got for myself.  It offers more of a firm support then the shredded latex. This is especially great if you sleep on your stomach.  I don’t sleep on my stomach but I do like a decent pillow firmness.  I used to sleep with two pillows before getting this one.  I also got the medium fill because I knew I could always take some fill out if I wanted too.  It felt a little firm initially so I did take some of the cotton out.  Another perk of getting the zippered case!  That helped a lot.  Then I felt my head could sink more into the pillow and not be so stiff.  It’s also nice because once the pillow flattens out a little, I know I can go back and add more fill that I took out.

Kapok-  A great option for a side or back sleeper.  This one felt light on the head and not as firm as the cotton.  I like how it molded to my head after a while and didn’t feel as firm as it did in the beginning.  It seemed more breathable than my cotton one too.  The pillow we got to try was a travel pillow so it was a little harder to get an accurate idea of what a kapok pillow might be like since the pillow itself is smaller but overall I was happy with it.  I think the next time I order one I would order a kapok pillow.  I’ve been letting my 22 month old use the travel size pillow and she loves it!  It’s the perfect size for a toddler pillow.  The kapok pillows are also more budget friendly compared to the other two options above.

If you’re looking for a good quality pillow that isn’t going to off gas toxins I would definitely look into White Lotus Home.  They really offer so many great options for natural pillows.  I didn’t get to try out their wool or buckwheat options but they’re reviews look great for both of those pillows as well!  What I love too about White Lotus Home is that each of their pillows comes in a smooth 100% organic cotton sateen pillow casing.  You can know your pillow is doted on from start to finish!  Use Coupone Code: GGG for 20% off your order!!

Have you swapped out your conventional pillow for a natural alternative?  If so, what was your favorite pillow you’ve tried?

Best Organic/Natural Bedding

Best Organic/Natural Bedding

I’ve rounded out my favorite organic/natural bedding on the blog today!  So you all know I’ve been on the hunt for some non-toxic bedding options.  As we’ve slowly renovated our bedroom it was a goal of mine to swap out our bedding.  I did have some sheets that were bamboo but they were 5 years old and needed an update.  Plus, they always came off our king size bed- not a fan!

I was able to test out a couple different sheet options. A higher budget option and a lower budget option.  They both worked out great and I would recommend them each.  Now you might be thinking why make the switch to organic sheets or bedding?  Well, there’s a lot of factors at play.  Allow me to explain.

Obviously it can be hard to throw out all the old bedding at once but I recommend starting with one room and slowly doing it when you can.  I recommend starting with your sheets and towels since they are right next to your skin.

I love knowing I’m sleeping on organic sheets!

So what did I end up for my bedding?

Sheets-

SOL Organics- These sheets are what luxury is made of!  They are made with fair trade certified cotton, and certified organic cotton.  The second party certifications include GOTS, Oeko-Tex and FLOCERT- a global fair trade certification.  These 300 thread count cotton sheets wrap you up in softness the minute they touch your skin!  They come in a variety of colors too. We chose white and are happy with how crisp and clean they look.  They also have 3 different sheet sets.  You can get a hemmed version, classic or pleated.  We got the hemmed version.  Each set comes with two pillow cases, a fitted sheet and a flat sheet.  And yes they stay on our mattress too!  They also come in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King and Split King. Can’t say enough about these luxury sheets.  They also offer organic duvet covers and bedroom sets that include the duvet and sheet set.  They were kind enough to offer a discount for my readers.  Use coupon code: GGG25 for 25% off all products over $99, plus free shipping within the U.S.  Shop here for all bedding!

Target Organic Sheet Sets- Now you can find organic sheet sets at Target even.  I bought a set to try out for you guys too.  I wanted to give you a budget friendly option.  These sheets are also certified by GOTS and Oek0-Tex.  The king size comes in at $55.99- not bad for a toxin free sheet option.  These also come with two pillow cases, fitted and flat sheet.  They aren’t as silky soft as the SOL Organics.  They have a stiffer feel and texture to them.  Some people may like that feel, others may not.  It’s obviously your preference.  My hubs could tell a difference when comparing the Target sheets to the SOL Organics.  I think these would be a great option for kids, who may not notice.  However, for adults it might be nice to splurge a little on the SOL Organics!  These come in some fun prints if your into printed sheets.  We got the White- which does have some grey lines going across it but they call it White.   Check out the Target sheets here!

Bedding is so important to get organic when you think of the toxic load over time!

Coverlet/Euro Shams- I ended up going with a West Elm Coverlet cover.  I used to have a duvet cover and down cover but due to allergies and not having a big enough washer to properly wash it all the time(hello dust mites) I ended up going with just a bedspread.  It’s organic and super chic if I do say so myself!  They have shams as well that I got to match as you can see above.  I got the euro shams.  I went with the frost gray color and really love it.  I really like how the coverlet isn’t stiff feeling and is soft and cozy.  West Elm also has more options for organic bedding too.  Check out the coverlet I got here!

sol organics review

This organic summer down comforter is the perfect temperature for my husband and I.

SOL Organic Organic Down Comforter- I’m so excited to finally share about this comforter!  I had a down comforter in the past but it wasn’t organic.  I also sometimes would get too warm, and my husband too.  We both tend to run a little warm when we sleep so when I saw that SOL Organics had a summer down comforter I couldn’t wait to try it!  The summer down has 600 fill, compared to the all season 700 fill.  Making it a little less heavy.  It’s filled with 100% Canadian White Down, that’s responsibly grown and harvested.  It is also 100% GOTS cotton down proof.  It has an even fill and is hypoallergenic.  I love how it lays flat and even, something that my last didn’t do.  It is the perfect temperature for my husband and I!  We both don’t get too hot and feel comfortable all night long.  I can’t recommend it enough.  It really hits all the marks for a clean organic down comforter and also isn’t too warm.  Check them out here!

Plisse Blanket- This is an organic cotton blanket my friend Steph from @stephdufordlifestyle had recommended to me from West Elm.  She had raved about them and I knew once I started detoxing my bedding I was going to snag one of these for the bed.  It’s such a perfect layering blanket.  We have our sheet down first, then this Plisse blanket.  It gets softer the more you wash it too!  We got ours in the color white.  I like having a couple layers of blankets on the bed and this is a perfect fit.  Get your Plisse blanket here!

West Elm carries so many great organic bedding options.

Oeko-Tex Blanket- Ok, so I wanted a warmer blanket for during the winter to layer on my bed.  I knew in the summer I would take it off.  I found one from Target that I like.  It isn’t organic, however, I was ok with that.  My biggest concern was that it was at least Oeko-Tex certified.  As mentioned above they test for harmful substances once the product is made.  I was excited to see how many options for Oeko-Tex were at Target!  I was ok with it not being organic since it’s not directly touching my skin and it’s Oeko-Tex Certified.  Check out all the blankets here!

Target is a great option to find natural bedding for budget friendly prices.

Nightstands- The nightstands are from All Modern and they’re made from a combination of real wood and manufactured wood.  I wasn’t as concerned with the nightstands since they’re a lot smaller piece of furniture.  Plus, I let them air out in the garage for a week and outside when it was sunny to help off gas as much as possible.  There wasn’t a strong smell at all once we brought them in. Here are the nightstands I got from All Modern!

Lamp- The lamps I got from All Modern too.  I had been eyeing them for a while.  I love anything with gold and these just make a statement!  Check out the lamps here!

Bed Frame-  I’ve been searching for a new bed frame for a while.  I had some strict guidelines when looking.  It had to be made of real wood- no particle board or manufactured wood because of the chemicals involved in the process.  Since a bed is such a large piece of furniture I didn’t want it off gassing harmful fumes. It also couldn’t be cloth or fabric.  Although I do like the look of the cloth headboards, from research I’ve learned how dust mites can live in them!  Plus, I wondered how they would really get clean, since you can’t take the cloth off.  After much looking I landed on the West Elm Mid Century Modern Bed.  It’s not only made with real wood but fair trade as well.  The price wasn’t so crazy either.  I found most furniture made from all wood can be very costly.  I’m SO happy with the purchase!  It didn’t even have a smell when we opened it other than just a pleasant real wood smell.  My hubs was impressed with how well it was made too.  Can’t recommend it enough!  Check out the West Elm Bed Frame here!

Love this organic coverlet from West Elm!

That sums up my organic/natural bedding review!  Did you see anything you like?

Loving Lately

Loving Lately

Loving Lately…This is a new series I’m going to start.   Not sure if it will be monthly, bi-weekly-still figuring it out.  I often get so many questions about what I’m wearing, home products I love and such.  I thought I would just turn it into a blog series where I share what I’m loving lately.  These could be recent finds from clothes, to bikes and even things on my wish list.  Hopefully, you get to know me along the way too.

Without further adieu, welcome to the first Loving Lately post.

  1. Dwell Collection Connolly Coral Wallet- This wallet has my name written all over it.  I’m obsessed with anything coral.  Plus, I love that all of Matt and Nat’s products are vegan and made with recycled plastic water bottles.  One more reason to buy!
  2. Nordstrom 50 MM Square Sunglasses- I’ve been wearing these nonstop since I bought them in April.  They make a fun statement, cover up my tired mom eyes and go with anything.  Did I mention they’re only $12?!  I’ve had so many people ask me about them…so here you go!
  3. Huffy Nel Lusso Cruiser Women’s Cruiser Bike- My sister got this bike a month ago and I’ve been drooling over it since I first saw it!  I mean does a bike get any cuter?  I can see myself riding it to the farmer’s market and putting my loot in the front basket.  Did I mention it even has a cell phone holder?  Oh and a mint green option too…I told my hubs I better be getting one for some special occasion.
  4. Lululemon Discipline Pant- I just gifted these pants to my hubs for Father’s Day and let’s just say he’s worn them almost everyday since he got them!  They not only are comfy he tells me but they look so good on him.  He can dress them up or down which he loves.  He wore them to work with a collared shirt and dressed down with sneakers and a t-shirt.  I personally love that they’re fitted-I’m all about him showing off that physique!
  5. Pottery Barn Kid’s Organic Jersey Scalloped Quilt- I recently bought this quilt a couple months ago for my 3 year old when she transitioned to a twin size bed.  I loved that it was a comforter and not a duvet cover.  With duvet covers you have to buy the cover, plus the duvet, which can add up quick.  The comforter is just one thing to buy.  I had been looking for an organic comforter but also one that was cute-this one fit the criteria perfectly and my daughter loves it too! Oh and it’s on sale right now!
  6. Pottery Barn Organic Multi Mini Heart Sheet Set- What says girl then hearts?!  These organic sheets were love at first sight.  Not only are they organic, but not crazy expensive!  They also match the organic comforter I got from Pottery Barn Kids.  They have a ton more prints to choose from if hearts aren’t your thing.
  7. Nixon Descender Silicone Strap Watch- My hub’s birthday is in July and he’s border line obsessed with watches…specifically Nixon watches.  He has two and I’ve been eyeing this one for his birthday present.  He doesn’t have a silicone wristband and I love that you could dress it up or down.
  8. Matt and Natt Dwell Collection Brave Backpack- I’ve had my Matt and Nat backpack for over a year now and I’m still in love with it-no joke.  It is perfect for travel-has a spot for my laptop, it fits all my necessary mom stuff and it goes with anything…I mean it, anything!  I always get so many compliments on it.  Of course I love that it’s vegan leather!  If you’ve been looking for the perfect bag-this may be it!
  9. GapFit Pleated ShortsThese may be my favorite shorts to date-no joke.  I just got them on vacation and have been wearing them nonstop.  They’re so comfortable, make you look thinner(I promise) and are the perfect length.  I need them in the other two colors-the obsession is real.  Did I mention they’re on sale for $25?!

What are you loving lately??
