Sprouts Community Giving + Vitamin Angels

Sprouts Community Giving + Vitamin Angels

I’m back talking about Sprouts Community Giving + Vitamin Angels! ¬†This company really gets better and better the more I learn about them. ¬†They really have created such an amazing place for people to learn about health from the groceries they buy to helping support their local community.

Sprouts has moved beyond just making healthy living accessible and really embraces the important idea of giving back.  I love that!  Every year Sprouts supports local nonprofit organizations from food banks and service groups though in-kind and direct donations.  SO amazing!  They are really showing that healthy living starts with us and we can make a difference in our local communities.

Food Rescue Program

I’m also a huge fan of their “Food Rescue Program” that helps those in need by providing food, plus feed for animals and nutrients for agriculture soil. ¬†Sprouts takes food that can no longer be sold but is perfectly edible and ¬†donates it to local hunger agencies. ¬†The agencies then disperse them to families in need. ¬†Since the Food Rescue Program started in 2013, over 43 million pounds of food have been donated! ¬†SO cool! ¬†That’s 35 million meals. ¬†Even if the food is not ok to give to hunger relief agencies, it is then donated to local dairy farms and cattle ranches as feed. ¬†This offers a more nutritious feed, plus lowers greenhouse gas emissions. Finally, food is also donated as compost which makes the soil our crops grow in so much richer. ¬†Over 18 million pounds of food have been given since this was started in 2014. Sprouts is raising the bar when it comes to using all resources to create a positive change in the world.

Community Awareness + Giving

Sprouts really is all about being part of the community and giving back. ¬†They have supported 830 community events with volunteers and in-kind donations. ¬†This effort has reached over 2.75 million residents! ¬†I was also impressed with Sprouts efforts when it comes to national disasters. ¬†Sprouts has given over 16,000 pounds of food and water to those affected by Hurricane Harvey and Irma. ¬† It didn’t stop there, Sprouts also raised over $350,000 for the American Red Cross too! ¬†They also have this annual drive during the holidays called “Grab and Give” where they have provided over 2 million meals.

Vitamin Angels-

Vitamin Angels is a program that helps those in need and at high risk, such as expectant mothers, young children and new moms. ¬†It’s goal is to really serve undeserved communities around the U.S. and in 74 countries around the world. ¬†To learn more about Vitamin Angels, their financial transparency and accountability, head to¬†vitaminangels.org.

The whole idea of Vitamin Angels was birthed out of a strong desire to give mothers and children the best possible life through nutritional help.  Sprouts has committed with Vitamin Angels to help support their initiative to eliminate infant mortality due to vitamin deficiency disease by year 2030.  This initiative will help mothers around the world get the prenatal vitamins they need to ensure healthy babies.  What an amazing movement and cause to be a part of!

Since 2014 alone, Vitamin Angels and Sprouts have reached over 6 million kids with vitamin A and de-worming tablets. ¬†They are literally changing the course of these children’s lives one supplement at a time! ¬†Through August 29th at the Mill Creek Sprouts, every time a product is purchased from a list of more than 1,000 qualifying items throughout the store, .25 will be donated to Vitamin Angels. ¬†These add up quickly and provide change for so many!

As you can see, shopping at Sprouts is a no brainer.  When you shop there you are creating ripple effects for generations to see!

I can’t wait for you all to experience Sprouts!  If you’re in the greater Seattle area then put August 15th on your calendar, Sprouts grand opening in Mill Creek.  This is the first Washington store!  For more information on the Mill Creek opening check out the press release here.

Naturpedic Mattress Review

Naturpedic Mattress Review

So excited to finally share with you guys my Naturpedic mattress review!

*I was gifted my Naturpedic mattress from the company. However, thoughts and reviews are my own.

I had the pleasure of testing out the EOS Classic Organic King Size Mattress. ¬†The specific one I received was the medium latex with plush coils. ¬†My husband and I both prefer a soft mattress! ¬†We had gone to a store that carried organic/natural mattresses in the Seattle area first before choosing our mattress. ¬†We got to test out different types of Naturpedic mattresses. ¬†In the end we knew we wanted the EOS Classic with medium latex and plush coils. ¬†It was so soft and felt dreamy just laying on it in the store. ¬†I couldn’t wait to start sleeping on it at home!

Naturpedic offers options for everyone in your family from baby, to child, all the way up to adult and something for every budget- which I appreciate! ¬†You can customize the firmness too depending on what you want. ¬†For ex. you can have it be firmer or softer on each side depending on what your partner and you want. My husband and I both chose the medium latex with plush coils but we could have each chosen a different option if we wanted. ¬†If for some reason you weren’t happy with the firmness you can exchange it for a different option within 90 days– pretty cool!

I was first introduced to Naturpedic over 4 years ago when I was searching for an organic mattress for my baby girl. ¬†At the time I hadn’t started to detox our bedroom yet and was learning all about the toxic load conventional mattresses can bring. ¬†I ended up choosing their organic crib mattress for our daughter and have loved it. ¬†Since they say we spend a 1/3 of our lives sleeping it’s important to consider the bed you’re sleeping on. ¬†I remember finding it alarming to learn all about the toxic ingredients in mattresses! ¬†From flame retardants, VOC’s, and formaldehyde- the toxic load can be scary. ¬†Not too mention, mattress companies are not required to disclose all the chemicals they use in order to make their mattresses compliant with mattress regulations. ¬†It’s also important to mention that many companies may claim to be organic, natural but actually have no certifications backing up these claims.

When I’m searching for a mattress I want to make sure it’s certified organic. ¬†Then I know it’s met third party testing. ¬†Look for the labels, GOTS, GOLS, and GREENGUARD. ¬†Naturpedic meets all these certifications, plus so many more such as¬†Formaldehyde Free Verified,¬†OCS100 Organic Content Standard, Non-GMO verified, and Made Safe Verified.

You can read all about their certifications here!

Here’s a list of ingredients they avoid:

NO Flame Retardants or Flame Retardant Barriers
NO Memory Foam or other forms of Polyurethane Foam
NO Soybean or Biobased Foam (polyurethane foam with soybean oil mixed in)
NO Synthetic Latex Rubber
NO Harmful Glues or Adhesives
NO GMO Cotton or other GMO fibers
NO Shoddy Insulator Pads

Unboxing/Putting The Mattress Together-

When we received the Naturpedic mattress it came in several boxes. ¬†I know sounds interesting to put the mattress together huh? ¬†But it’s SO easy! ¬†It comes in 4 boxes and there is a box that’s marked open me first with the instructions in it. ¬†So you’re all set. ¬†Then it walks you through the whole process step by step. ¬†It was super easy to set up. ¬†It comes with an encasement which essentially houses the mattress parts. ¬†My hubs laid that out first on top of our bed. ¬†Then we opened the box that had the coil support- one for each side of the bed since we have a king. ¬†My hubs put those in. ¬†Then we we opened the next box that had the 3 inch comfort layers and put those on top of the coils. ¬†Then we zipped up the encasement and we were all set- easy peasy! ¬†My hubs was even impressed with how simple the whole process was.

I have a video I posted to my stories of the whole process.  You can watch it below.

Our Thoughts-

After having slept on it for almost 3 months I can honestly say we LOVE it! ¬†My husband once a week tells me how much he loves the mattress- no joke! ¬†He said it’s kept him feeling cooler in warm months- which says a lot since he tends to run warm. ¬†He also likes how it feels soft but not too soft. ¬†He went on a business trip and all I heard the whole time he was gone was how excited he was to come back home to his mattress! ¬†He said he’s slept better- which I agree and I’m wondering if it has to do with not breathing in toxic fumes? ¬†He has allergies and used to sneeze all the time at night- now he doesn’t!

I agree with my husband. ¬†I feel so much cooler than I did with our last mattress. ¬†It also feels supportive but not hard or too firm. ¬†I also like how breathable everything feels. ¬†I truly look forward to going to bed each night! ¬†I love knowing we aren’t breathing in harmful fumes when we’re sleeping and our body isn’t absorbing toxic chemicals either. ¬†It did have a faint smell when we first opened it. ¬†But it wasn’t a chemical smell just a subtle unboxing smell in my opinion. ¬†Once it was out for a day I didn’t smell anything.

My husband and I both can’t recommend this mattress enough! ¬†Check out all that Naturpedic has to offer here! ¬†Also check out their store finder to find a store¬†near you!¬†It really has exceeded our expectations and we are a hard sell! ¬†I’m not getting compensated for this post, it is my opinions but my they did send my the mattress. ¬†I also have a Naturpedic Baby organic baby mattress that I’ve had since my first daughter was born and we have loved it! ¬†We’ve used it for both of our daughters and can’t recommend it enough. ¬†Overall, our experience with Naturpedic has been amazing!

Non-Toxic Stain

Non-Toxic Stain

Ok, this non-toxic stain post has been a long time coming! ¬†So long story short my hubs made me an amazing table as a birthday and Christmas present last year. ¬†Yeah, he rocks. ¬†I had been wanting a table I had seen at Restoration Hardware but didn’t want to pay $3k for it- anyone else feel me on this?? ¬† So he made one for me with my uncle, who is an expert craftsman. ¬†To say I love it would be an understatement! ¬†He nailed it and it’s a gift I will cherish forever.

He finished the table in December of last year but we weren’t able to stain it until now(8 months later in September). ¬†It was too cold to stain it in the winter because the stain wouldn’t cure unless it was inside the house. ¬†There was no way I was going to have it stained in the house with two little girls around. ¬†I was concerned about the off gassing, but also having my 3 year old accidentally put her hands on the newly stained table- and with my 3 year old the probability of that was very high. ¬†We don’t have a garage, so we simply had to wait until the temps warmed up. ¬†We could have done it sooner but summer was so crazy busy that we hardly had a free weekend to do it.

Anyways, it’s finally done! ¬†I wanted to share what we ended up with, the process of application and the final look. ¬†I searched high and low for a non-toxic stain. ¬†For those who may not know of the toxicity of wood finishes- it’s really toxic! ¬†Wood finishes contain¬†high levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are not only harmful to the environment but horrible for your personal health. ¬†Stains are solvents that can be derived from petroleum or synthetic chemicals and are highly toxic. ¬†I didn’t want to be breathing in chemicals but I also wanted my table to be protected.

We ended up choosing Vermont Natural Coatings Furniture Finish Poly Whey Clear Semi-Gloss. ¬†It is a sealer and topcoat. ¬†I had read up on Vermont Natural Coatings and heard great feedback and reviews. ¬†I also spoke to someone at The Green Depot here in Seattle and was very impressed with the product. ¬†When it came down to the final decision, it was either Vermont Natural Coatings or Osmo. ¬†However, we ended up going with Vermont Natural Coatings because with little kids we really wanted the surface to be protected and durable. ¬†Osmo would give a more matte finish which I wanted and would be easy to touch up just one area if need be, but it’s not durable like Vermont Natural Coatins PolyWhey Furniture Finish. ¬†Also, the Osmo would turn the wood more yellow and I didn’t want that either. ¬†At the end of the day I wanted a durable stain that would last through many meal times. ¬†You just have to weigh what’s important to you in a stain/wood sealer.

The Vermont Natural Coatings Furniture Finish uses whey protein from the dairy industry for a bonding agent. ¬†It’s a natural and renewable resource. ¬†It has very low VOC’s. ¬†When I spoke with The Green Depot staff they said to let the table sit out for a week and it would off gas mostly. ¬†You couldn’t even smell anything when my husband was applying it. ¬†We did let it cure for a week outside to let it set, just because the directions say to allow one week for full product cure. ¬†When we brought it in you couldn’t smell anything. ¬†Score!

I was nervous about the amount of gloss but once my husband did the first coat I knew I had made the right decision- I loved it! ¬†It doesn’t look super shiny. ¬†You can choose from satin, semi-gloss and glossy. ¬†We chose semi-gloss just because we knew it would be eaten on and used frequently. ¬†We even had a wood worker tell us we could take a 220 grit electric sander and sand it just a little after to give a more matte look if we really wanted too. ¬†We may in the future but for now I think it looks great! ¬†Another big concern was not changing the color of the table. ¬†I loved the light color and didn’t want to sacrifice that but also knew it would get a little darker but was fine with that. ¬† The Vermont Natural Coatings Furniture Finish was the perfect solution.

My hubs just followed the directions on the back of the container.  Everyone I talked too recommended we do that since natural products can have very specific directions.  The drying time between coats was only 2 hours which was nice.  My hubs did sand it before the first application with a 220 grit sand paper and then after each application (there was a total of 3 applications) too.  This is what the directions said.

I’m so pleased with the way it turned out and would recommend it to anyone looking for a natural alternative to traditional wood finishes! ¬†Have you used natural stain or wood sealer? ¬†What were your thoughts?
