Traveling and want to know the best organic places to eat!? Me too! These haunts are the best of the best in organic dining and I am so excited to share them with you. As buzz words continue to drive business there are more and more restaurants claiming to be “local” “natural” “sustainable” or “organic” but the proof is in the ingredients and sourcing and my standards do not waiver. Choosing only the best of the best to list here. Also, if you have a suggestion please send it along, I am always looking for the next and the best!
Also, I’ve teamed up with my girl Lisa over at This Organic Girl to build out this list. Lisa is a real OG (organic girl) and her standards are as sharp, if not sharper, than mine and she has some must-try organic joints. Check out her list at This Organic Girlwhich includes Boston, Atlanta, Charlotte, Las Vegas, New York City, San Fransisco, San Diego and Tampa/Clearwater, Santa Monica and more to come.
This list is live and will be changing as I visit and try more fun organic/clean hot spots! I’ll be sure to post of upcoming trips so you guys can offer your top recommendations.
Root Down(Denver)– They have one of these at the airport and it’s heavenly. Over 50% of their ingredients are sourced locally in Colorado. They use pasture raised meats and that are fed non-gmo feed. They have a 4,000 sq. ft. garden in the middle of the city, where they grow 20% of their seasonal vegetables. They use biodegradable cleaning products and paper products are all made from post-consumer unbleached recycled paper. Their colorado lamb sliders and coconut ginger fizz are worth the trip every time.
True Food Kitchen(Denver)– Another True Food. They cater to every type of foodie. From gluten free, organic, vegan, and vegetarian. They serve a variety of dishes, from bowls, burgers, pizzas, salads and sandwiches. I love their kale aid and their grass fed steak tacos!
Blooming Beets– Organic and local whenever possible. 100% gluten and grain free. Meats are locally caught, pasture raised or grass fed. No soy, corn, processed sugars or seed oils. Instead they use coconut oil, olive oil and avocado oil. They even have an AIP(auto-immune protocol) menu, veggie menu and vegetarian menu! For an appetizer get their brussel sprouts and bacon wrapped dates.
L.A.(many of these have various locations around the area)
Sidecar Donuts– I don’t have donuts anymore, for many reasons but sometimes I would love to be able to have one…I mean you got to live a little. Sidecar makes it possible because they make gluten free donuts! They offer one flavor daily that’s gluten free. It’s worth every bite. And no there’s nothing organic about them!
True Food Kitchen– They cater to every type of foodie. From gluten free, organic, vegan, and vegetarian. They serve a variety of dishes, from bowls, burgers, pizzas, salads and sandwiches. I love their kale aid and their grass fed steak tacos!
Cafe Gratitude– Plant based restaurant. Serving organic, local food. They also support environmentally friendly products. The environment is hip and fresh too. I could inhale everything but really love their magical CG / double double and their house made gingerale.
Sage Vegan Bistro– Organic, plant based restaurant. Work with local farmers for the freshest ingredients. Brunch, lunch, and dinner. They also have an assortment of dairy free ice creams. Their potato filled tacos are life giving and their almond butter and banana shake is amazing!
Sunlife Organics– All ingredients are organic, wild-crafted, or grown 100% pesticide free. Their straws and silverware are compostable. They offer smoothies, cold pressed juices, food/sandwiches, smoothie/acai bowls, salads, and organic frozen yogurt(yes ORGANIC)…it’s a haven for pure goodness! Try their organic frozen yogurt of course and get their bliss bowl-you won’t regret it!
Frankie and Jo’s- Ice cream that is vegan, gluten free, soy free and free of any gums or stabilizers. They’re all handmade. Most of the ingredients are certified organic and if they’re not, they use local farms that follow organic practices. They also make all their own nut milks in house with sprouted nuts. Some recipes use organic cane sugar but a lot use maple syrup or dates to sweeten. Did I mention the gluten free waffle cone that’s sweetened with maple syrup? They offer seasonal flavors, plus staples. Tahini Chocolate and Salty Caramel Ash are my jam!
Revolve: True Food Wine Bar– Gluten free, GMO free, soy free, refined sugar free, organic produce, 100% grass fed beef, sustainable wild seafood, organic eggs and organic biodynamic wine. Everything is made fresh daily. They serve brunch, lunch, dinner and smoothies. Get the biscuits and gravy! The biscuits are made with cauliflower.
Chaco Canyon Organic Cafe– Local, 90-97% organic, vegan. Over 90% of their waste is hand sorted, recycled or composted. They’re serious about their food and environmental impact. Get The Famous Lentil Burger and try a smoothie!
Portage Bay Cafe– One of my faves! Local, organic and sustainable. They serve breakfast and lunch. Always so packed. Their Jo’s Scramble and Buckwheat Pancakes are delicious. If you order pancakes, waffles, or french toast you get a trip to their topping bar to eat as much local, organic fruits and homemade whip you can handle!
Sweetgrass Food– Local, mostly organic, vegan and responsibly sourced ingredients. I am a fan of their Melbourne Smoothie and Mira Bars. Their Mira bars are amazing! They have bowls and great salads. I like making my own bowl. Really fun modern space.
Homegrown– Soups, salads, sandwiches. Local, organic and sustainable. They even have their own farm. Their breads are made fresh from a local bakery-yes even their gluten free bread. They have a kid’s menu, seasonal flavors, and also serve breakfast. Their tomato soup is amazing, and so is their chicken pesto sandwich. They’re all about composting too!
Pressed Juicery– A vegan option for a treat! They have freezes (basically frozen yogurt) made with almond milk and sweetened with dates. They also serve cold pressed juices. They aren’t organic.
8oz. Burger– Local, organic and sustainable. They use grass fed beef for their burgers. Juicy and delicious, just the way a burger should be. I love the classic burger but they all are good!
Julep Nail Parlor– This nail parlor is chic and luxe. All their polishes are 5-free. They autoclave all their bowls and implements(medical grade sanitation). They don’t do any acrylic nails. No strong smell. They also use better quality products during their service. All their products are not completely clean however, so I still like to bring my favorites with me.
Ok, so most of you know I created a Green Beauty Christmas Guide. I did one last year and it was a big hit, so I had created another one just like it this year too. It gives you all the latest on the deals that are happening, coupon codes and what I love from each online retailer. It’s such a great resource if I do say so myself! If you haven’t downloaded one, be sure too here. However, I’ve gotten so many e-mails, and messages asking a lot of detailed questions about what to get for a guy, baby, mom, household gifts, stocking stuffers…well you get the picture. I thought instead of just answering the e-mails I could share it with you guys too-after all we’re family right?!
I broke it up into categories for you. I give several ideas for each category and really help you narrow down your options and hopefully give you some great green gift ideas.
Most Natural Air Purifying Bag– The perfect gift for those gym rats whose bags could use a little stench control. These soak up all the stench, but do it all naturally with charcoal!
TICO Organic Shave Oil- It’s definitely been hard to find a shave oil that is full of pure ingredients but that also works. This is an oil, so it doesn’t clog up your razor like some of the creams.
Blue Avocado (re) Zippered Travel Quart– The perfect gift for the jet setter. It’s a quart size bag that can be used over and over. It’s clear, so it’s easy to see into and grab whatever you need. You can stop the plastic baggie madness!
Kari Gran Lip Whip– These lip balms are my fave. They moisturize and provide a subtle lip tint. Best of all they can be found even at Sephora!
Josh Rosebrook Travel Size Hair Spray or LIFT(volumizer)– Hair products can be hard to make the switch over to. But thankfully there is Josh Rosebrook who makes it easy! His hair spray and LIFT volumizer are the best I’ve found. He offers travel sizes now so it’s not as big of a commitment starting out. Great stocking stuffers!
Leahlani Mermaid Mask– This mask is famous and for good reason-it performs! If you want to treat that special someone in your life this is it. A great mask for anyone new to green beauty or anyone who’s been around a while-it’s that good!
Artifact Uprising Thank You Cards- Personalize some thank you cards just for them with Artifact Uprisings thank you card prints. These prints are printed on 100% recycled paper and look so chic!
Matt & Nat Crossbody Bag– The perfect bag for any occasion. All Matt & Nat bags are vegan and the lining is made out of 100% plastic water bottles.
Keep Cup Cafe Range(glass cup)-I love these cups! They do sell plastic ones, but I prefer the glass ones because if you have a hot beverage in the cup you don’t have to worry about plastic leaching into your cup. You can even design your own!
Berkey Water Filter– This is the filter I use to filter my water. It even filters out fluoride! If you’re wondering what to get someone, then this is it. You can’t put a price tag on clean filtered water. It’s the gift that keeps on giving!
Pyrex– I love storing my food in Pyrex! It’s glass and I don’t have to think twice about anything crazy leaking into my food. Ditch the plastic food storage and snag one of these sets instead.
Simple Green Smoothie Book– This book is packed full of so many great smoothie recipes, plus it gives so many helpful tips. A great book for anyone wanting some smoothie motivation.
Live Simply Meal Planner– This has been a game changer for me. It helps me to stay organized and on track with my budget for the week with our food. It has everything, from a budget list, grocery list, pantry inventory, freezer inventory and so much more.
Fourth & Heart Ghee- This ghee is unlike any I’ve had! With so many flavors, it will keep you coming back for me. My favorite flavors are Madagascar Vanilla Bean and White Truffle Salt.
MatiMati Organic Bamboo Wash cloths– I love these wash cloths for my girls! They are so soft and completely clean since they’re organic. Perfect for my infant daughter up to my toddler. They even feel softer the more you wash them.
Pottery Barn Organic Crib Sheets– I have used these for both daughters and love them. They come in some really cute prints and I love knowing that they’re sleeping on chemical free sheets.
Planetbox– These are seriously changing how people pack a lunch! They are stainless steel and come in various sizes. They have compartments for all the food. I really like how it portions out the food with the sizes, helps educate your child on a wide variety of foods, plus keeps food separate.
Pura Water Bottle-These are a must for any toddler/child. It’s a completely plastic free water bottle! The top is made from silicone and the bottle made from stainless steel. You can easily switch out the top depending on what your child likes. From a nipple for a bottle top, straw top, sippy top or even a sports top-they grow with every phase of your child.
Watering Can by Green Toys– I love Green Toys! All their toys are made from 100% recycled milk jugs and they look so cute. This watering can is perfect for teaching kids about gardening. Whether you have indoor plants or outdoor ones.
Wei of Chocolate- The ultimate experience when it comes to clean chocolate. These treats come in 30 piece boxes or 8 piece packs. All the chocolate is vegan, organic, non-GMO, fair trade, dairy free and soy free. There’s a variety of flavors to choose from that will make your mouth water! My personal fave is Wei Beautiful with peppermint. You can even order a Wei subscription-my kind of gift!
ALTER ECO– I love their chocolate! It’s organic, fair trade and offers so many flavors. Plus, you can buy it in bars or truffles-can you say yum! They are soy free, GMO free, and gluten free. You can get these at most health food stores and Whole Foods.
Theo Chocolate- It’s only natural I’m a Theo Chocolate lover as well, after all, they originated right here in Seattle. They also are soy free, organic, gluten free, vegan, fair trade and non-GMO. I will mention that some of their holiday bars and other flavors have corn syrup in them. So be sure to check the ingredients. I like sticking with my fave- Salted Almond 70% dark chocolate bar, just pure ingredients.
Heavenly Organics-These are amazing! My favorite is their Mint Honey Chocolate Patties. Made with just a handful of pure ingredients. These are organic, gluten free, dairy free, non-GMO, fair trade and just sweetened with 100% organic raw honey-hello!
Eating Evolved– Their chocolate is gluten free, soy free, paleo, organic, dairy free, vegan and refined sugar free. I love their cups! They have chocolate bars too, chocolate spreads, and hot chocolate.
That sums up some Christmas gift ideas for the green heart! What are you eyeing?
I came across Kosmatologylast spring when I tried their “Mint Your Feet” Foot Scrub, and “Mint Your Feet” Soothing Foot Balm. Let’s just say they definitely did not disappoint! If you’re looking for a good foot scrub that will leave your feet feeling tingly and wonderful, then this is it. Their balm is the perfect moisturizer post scrub. Anyways, after trying those products I knew I was in for a treat when I was sent some more goodies from them.
Kosmatology’s founder is Janis, a pharmacist who had a daughter with eczema. As a pharmacist, she knew the steroid cream prescribed for her daughter had side effects, and she wasn’t comfortable living with that. As a result, she started experimenting with different oil combinations, and it wasn’t long before people were asking her to make products for their families. How cool is that?! One thing I love about Kosmatology is their commitment to organic, pure ingredients. There’s no fluff or toxins in these products. Also, there is something for the whole family. From bug repellant, to hand sanitizer, even face wash, they are your one stop shop. They make healthy products, that you won’t have to think twice about. They’re also affordable organic skincare, and body care, something that can be hard to find.
I was sent the Rose Geranium Face Wash, the Rose Geranium Face Moisturizer, Grapefruit Lotion Bar, the Orange Sweetness Foaming Hand Soap, and the Herbal Fresh Hand Sanitizer.
This face wash comes in an easy to use pump. It’s a foaming cleanser, so you’re skin feels really clean after using it. It’s not super drying like some foaming cleansers. The first several ingredients are oils, which help to bring moisture to the skin. It has organic ingredients that you can pronounce and understand…can someone say YES! The rose geranium is a pleasant smell, and doesn’t overwhelm you. I was also super impressed with the size of the face wash. It comes in a hefty 6oz. bottle! The perfect face wash to get the grime off at the end of the day and not sacrifice quality. They have it in Lemongrass as well. $22.49
This is another hefty product size, it will take you a while to get through this-such a good value! This smells again like the Rose Geranium Face Wash. I used this two ways and liked them both. The first was for cleansing. I’ve been a long devotee of double cleansing. With double cleansing you always start with an oil, and then use more of creamy/foaming cleanser after. This Rose Geranium Oil is the perfect oil to remove makeup and grime from the day. I then used a warm towel to wipe off the oil. After, that I used the Rose Geranium Face Wash. My skin felt balanced and clean. The second way I used it was as a facial moisturizer, post toning. It kept my skin feeling hydrated and soothed. It would leave a slight oily feeling on my skin initially but within 15 minutes it was gone. A great moisturizing serum, packed full of goodness, and of course all organic, and available in Lemongrass as well. $24.99
The lotion bar is what started Kosmatology, and has helped so many customers with eczema. If you or someone you know has struggled with eczema, this may be your ticket. This lotion bar is just like a deodorant, making application so easy. You just glide it over any area that needs more moisture. It’s not a thick body butter, but more of a balm texture. It does leave my skin feeling oily, which I don’t love for day use. However, at night this was perfect. I would apply it on my hands before bed, and wake up with soft hands. I also used this on my body as a moisturizer, and my skin felt oily as well. I would use it only if I was going to bed to avoid the oily feeling. Haha, I know I’m weird! I loved the grapefruit smell, so refreshing and light. They do have other scents if you’re not keen on grapefruit. $10.49
I LOVE this hand soap! Best organic, natural hand soap I’ve tried…hands down. I have struggled with finding a hand soap. It either wasn’t pure, squirted out weird or didn’t foam. This baby does it all, and has the best ingredients. Not to mention, it doesn’t dry out my hands at all! The orange smell is the perfect fresh scent. Everyone needs this in your kitchen and bathroom…trust me. They have them in several other scents as well. Of course I want to try them all! $8.99
This hand sanitizer is another amazing product Kosmatology offers. I love a good hand sanitizer. Especially when they’re organic and full of pure ingredients. I’m also a fan of spray hand sanitizers, probably because I have a one year old. It makes disinfecting little hands on the go so easy. The smell is really mild and refreshing. I really liked the size of the pump as well. It pumped so easy compared to other hand sanitizers. May sound picky, but everything helps when you have 2 seconds before your kid moves! They have these in several other scents. Moms, you need these. $3.99
Well, that sums up my review of Kosmatology. I have loved sampling their products. It is so refreshing to know companies are really stepping up to the plate, and creating products for the whole family that are not only pure, but effective! Also, Kosmatologyis offering an amazing coupon code right now! Just enter GURL20 and receive 20% off your order. Coupon good through 12/31/15. These are great stocking stuffer gifts too! Have you tried any Kosmatology products??
I recently received a beauty box from Goodbeing (formerly Goodebox). I was so excited! A green beauty box created just for me-I couldn’t wait to unbox all the goodies! Now you may be asking what is Goodbeing? Well, allow me to explain. Goodbeing is a premium discovery & trial service providing expertly curated, healthy beauty products, non-toxic cosmetics, natural wellness & sustainable, toxin-free living goods. Sounds amazing huh?! Well, it is.
Here’s how it works-
-You sign up and choose what plan works for you. One time, Monthly, multi-months or every other month. A one time purchase starts at $21 and after that it gets cheaper if you bundle more months together. For example, if you sign up for 3 months, you’ll pay $60-so $20 per box instead of $21.
-Once you decide what plan you want, then you fill out your member profile. Each box is customized according to your profile. This is the part I love. So if you don’t like lavender, there won’t be lavender in your box! Pretty cool!
-Then once you’ve done all that, you’ll receive your box within the first 14 days of the month with 4-5 trial sized products. When you receive your box, you’ll get a card talking about each product and how to use it.
-Once you’ve received your box you will get special offers and discounts for all the products found in the box. So if you really like the lip gloss in your box, you can get 20% off of it.
Why I love it??
It’s not a super expensive box. Most people can spend $21 a month on a beauty box. Goodbeing gives you a great opportunity to test out clean products you might not normally. For example, there were brands I hadn’t even heard of in my recent box. I love that! Not only that but I receive discounts to purchase the full size products or other products they offer. I also like the fact that each box is customized. You don’t end up with product you wouldn’t use or fragrance you might not like, etc. Another cool feature of Goodbeing is that they focus on not just clean beauty, but also wellness products and sustainable living products.
Ok, so now that you know all about Goodbeing, let’s talk about the loot I received in my October box.
I was a little skeptical when I saw that I had received a konjac sponge. I had tried others in the past and didn’t like them. But I was hoping for a different experience with this one and that’s exactly what I got. This isn’t your average konjac sponge-it’s so much better! When I looked into it further I noticed My Konjac Sponge had several different varieties of konjac sponges and the one I got was French Red Clay-which is great for dry/mature and sensitive skin types. I used it in conjunction with my cleanser and it helped to clean and exfoliate at the same time. Other konjac sponges were too harsh in the past, but the My Konjac French Red Sponge brings the perfect amount of exfoliation. When you get a konjac sponge it’s hard, but then you get it wet and it softens completely into a sponge like loofah. Konjac is actually made of a porous root vegetable, and are touted for being great at removing dirt, oil and blackheads. The fibers of the sponge help to dislodge the dirt. I loved the My Konjac Sponge because it wasn’t too harsh of an exfoliation. I felt I could use it everyday because it was more mild. It gave a great smoothness to my skin too. If you are like me and favor a more gentle exfoliation, then the French Red Clay Konjac Sponge would be perfect for you. They also offer other Konjac sponges for varying skin types or if you prefer a deeper exfoliation. $10
When I saw that I got this Lillian Eve Cuticle Pen I was pretty stoked! I hate when my cuticles are dry looking, and this is the perfect solution for that. Best of all I can take it anywhere and not have to risk it spilling because it comes in a convenient pen. Just brush it on your cuticles and rub in. It only has four simple ingredients too! I love putting this on before doing my nails. After I put it on, it’s so much easier to push my cuticles back because my cuticles are soft. I noticed I wasn’t getting hang nails as much either because my cuticles were so hydrated. You all need this! Plus, what a great stocking stuffer for Christmas. Lillian Eve also carries a ton of non-toxic nail polishes, hand creams and nail polish removers-you’re one stop shop for nails! $12
Who doesn’t need hand sanitizer?? Since we know the mainstream stuff is filled with junk, grabbing something more natural is a no brainer. I love that this comes in spray form. So easy to just spray on my hands, but also on other things I’m wanting to disinfect. I noticed myself spraying it on shopping carts at the store or cleaning my steering wheel with it. Oh and bonus, it smells good! Coconut and lemon are definitely a winning combination. I also took this with me on a recent trip, and the little size was perfect for travel. I especially loved it for my daughter. Since she’s only 16 months it’s hard sometimes to get her hands to put hand sanitizer on them but with the spray it makes it so much more convenient. Another great stocking stuffer! EO also carries a ton of other products. Anything from body oils to deodorant. $2.99
I had never heard of Bonnie products before getting the box. But I’m so glad it was in there! This is definitely one of my favorite lip gloss formulas. It isn’t sticky or goopy at all, but goes on so smooth. The name says it all-it is an “Ultra Shine” gloss. I really loved the color Garnet I received too. More of a brick red, perfect for fall. The ingredients are amazing as well- no synthetics, just the pure stuff. It also has a peppermint smell, which I love. The gloss layered perfect over my lip liners and lipsticks too for more of a pop. They have it in two other colors. You can’t beat the price either! $8, is a steal. Bonnie also carries body products, candles and fragrance.
Hamadi was another brand I had never heard of before but was so excited to try out. In this box I received the Shea Spray which is similar to a shine spray. It isn’t like traditional shine sprays that can actually end up damaging the hair. It’s nourishing and hydrating for the hair with ingredients like aloe, avocado and shea butter. I was concerned it would be too much for my fine hair but I was mistaken! It actually didn’t weigh down my hair at all. I sprayed a few sprays on before blowdrying to help hydrate hair, and after I was done I sprayed some more on to calm fly aways. It gave my hair a great shine and really brought out the highlights, and color of my hair. I also love how it doesn’t leave my hair crispy at all like some shine products have in the past. It really does it’s job quite well! This would be especially great for those with curly, frizzy or coarse hair. Hamadi also carries a ton of other hair products that I definitely want to check out! $16
That sums up my review of the Goodbeing box. I highly recommend you guys check them out! A great clean and affordable beauty/wellness box. Have any of you guys heard of it or subscribed? I’ve teamed up with the Goodbeing to offer one lucky reader a free October box-(what I just reviewed for you)! Check out my Instagram @gurlgonegreen for all the details.
