Best Green Beauty Cleansers

Best Green Beauty Cleansers

I've rounded out the Best Green Beauty Cleansers for you!  I get so many questions on what is the best green cleanser, so I thought I would share my faves.  There is something for everyone and every budget. Every skin type has specific needs and goals. All of these cleansers keep your ph in check, so you're not left with skin that is crying out for hydration.  If anything these organic face washes help put moisture back in your skin and protect your acid mantle.

Also, on another note something I've noticed people don't often do is cleanse their skin properly.  If you don't properly cleanse your skin, none of your other products can be as effective.  You want to make sure you get all your makeup off from the day and the grime.  Otherwise you are caking products on top of dirty skin and causing possible blemishes because of dirt buildup.  Even if you don't wear makeup you need to wash your face!  Yes, it get's dirty even without makeup.  Let's find the best green cleanser for your skin type!

How to choose the right cleanser?

Think about what your skin type is and what you need.  Is your skin dry, is it oily, sensitive, acne prone?  Once you've established your skin type then you can decide on what type of formula you like working with.

  • Oil Cleanser
  • Balm Cleanser
  • Cream Cleanser

*I've highlighted my favorite for each skin type below.

Best For Dry/Normal Skin- Marie Veronique Replenishing Oil-

This cleanser is an oil but more of a creamy oil.  It comes in a glass pump bottle which makes me love it even more.  I always shake it up before I use it to make sure the product is evenly distributed.  I get my skin slightly damp and then squeeze out a small amount and massage into my skin. It removes not only my face makeup but also my eye makeup-with no stinging!  Yes, a miracle cleanser is what I call it.  After I massage it all in, I then take a warm wash cloth and wipe off.  It doesn’t dry out my skin at all but helps keep it so balanced.  It’s rare as a green beauty blogger that I actually finish a product, but this one…it’s almost gone.  Get the Marie Veronique Cleanser here!

Best Cleanser for Mature/Aging Skin- Beautycounter's Countertime Cleansing Oil-

This cleanser is unique and so good and is the best natural face cleanser for aging skin.  The cleanser is a spin off of Asian skincare.  You apply it to dry skin as an oil but as you add water it emulsifies into a milky consistency.  It removes all my makeup effortlessly, no stinging and my skin doesn't feel stripped after using.  I literally want to use this every night- it's that good.  Trust me I have a variety of other products I could use but I keep reaching for this one over and over.  Did I mention the smell?  AH-MAZING!  Get it here.

Best Cleanser for Sensitive Skin or Reactive Skin- Tata Harper SUPERKIND Softening Cleanse-

I am currently using this cleanser and LOVE it!  This is from Tata Harper's newest line for sensitive and reactive skin.  It's fragrance free, and essential oil free.  It has the best of both worlds.  It not only foams up slightly so your skin feels clean, but it doesn't strip or dry out your skin because at it's core it's a cream cleanser.  They nailed the formula!  I love how it removes all my makeup and the daily grind effortlessly.  It has lipid complex in it to support a healthy skin barrier. Plus, it comes in the chicest pump bottle!  Get it here.

Best Dry Skin Cleanser- Josh Rosebrook Essential Balm Cleanse-

If you have been around green beauty then you know Josh Rosebrook products are a cut above.  This Essential Balm Cleanse is no exception.  It is so nourishing and hydrating.  It is an oil based cleanser, that transforms from a gel into a milky texture.  It not only removes all your makeup, but grime from the day too. It contains micronutrient-dense plant oils, antioxidant rich blue-green algae, chlorella and micro-biome supporting probiotics.  It even has well Josh Rosebrook's in-house herbal extracts to nourish skin.  Apply it to dry skin with circular motions and then add a little water to turn it into this milky consistency that's so good. Your skin feels perfectly balanced afterward as it really protects the delicate acid mantle.  Get it here!

Best Overall Cleanser Pick- One Love Organics Botanical B Enzyme Cleansing Oil + Makeup Remover

First off, the smell of this lovely cleanser is divine!  It smells like tropical paradise…if that's even a smell or possible.  It is an oil cleanser, but has more slip to it.  You don't need to even use a washcloth to get all the residue off, you can just rinse with water.  After cleansing, my face feels perfectly clean, smooth, and balanced.  It gets rid of all my makeup so easily.  Oh and it comes in a glass pump bottle, which my inner green goddess loves.  If your skin is dry/combination this is your baby. Get it here!

Best Normal/Combination Skin Cleanser- OSEA Ocean Cleanser-

This cleanser is milky smooth to the core!  I love how it gets rid of all my makeup and grime but doesn't strip my skin.  It feels so silky on the skin.  The scent is so pleasant too- I get hints of jasmine.  It has lactic acid in it that helps to slough off the dead skin and reveal a bright glowing complexion.  I love how it even removes my eye makeup effortlessly.  I just rub it all over my eye area and it quickly picks up all the dirt and grime.  Then I rinse off with water and then wipe clean with a warm washcloth.  I also get my face a little damp before I apply the cleanser- helps to give it a little slip.  My skin feels so clean but balanced and not too dry.  Plus, I love that it comes in a glass frosted bottle- swoon!  Get the OSEA cleanser here!

Best Budget Friendly Cleanser- VaniCream Gentle Facial Cleanser-

This cleanser is not only the most budget friendly cleanser and easiest to get(hello Amazon) but it also works amazingly well!  I had a skin flare up this past year and was desperate to find a cleanser that wouldn't irritate it and would soothe my skin.  After reading rave reviews about VaniCream's Gentle Facial Cleanser, I knew I was on to something.  It comes in a pump bottle.  It is free of fragrance, sulfates, gluten and is non-comedogenic.  It's made for acne prone skin or any skin that is irritated in general.  I get my face damp and then rub the cleanser in circular motions all over my skin.  It leaves it feeling so smooth and clean.  This is also a minimal ingredient cleanser, which makes it great for sensitive skin.  Even though it doesn't contain oils, it doesn't feel stripping to the skin.  This was the only cleanser I used for months because my skin was so inflamed.  It totally helped calm it!  Highly recommend if you have sensitive or acne prone skin. This is definitely my husband's pick for best natural face wash for men.  It's a no fuss cleanser.  Apply it to damp skin, it slightly emulsifies and you rinse off- so easy for men. Get it here!

All Skin Types- Mahalo Unveil Cleansing Balm-

The Unveil Cleanser is a definite fave-it's so good!! I can't get enough.  First the scent is tantalizing. With notes of lemon, fragonia, ginger, pink peppercorn and cardamom. It smells like a burst of lemony bright goodness! It comes in a round wooden jar- Mahalo's signature look. It's so unique compared to any cleanser I've used-in a league of it's own. Upon contact with your skin and a little water it melts and turns into this amazing lather. It removes all my makeup effortlessly and with no stinging around the eye area. Don't get me started on all the ingredients-swoon worthy!  My skin feels so balanced and nourished after. Get the Unveil Cleanser here!

All Skin Types- Maya Chia The Great Cleanse-⠀⠀

This cleanser is so good.  First of all the packaging-on point.  Dark glass pump bottle, preserves every last drop.  It’s an oil cleanser.  So you apply it on dry skin and rub in circular motions all over.  It removes all my makeup effortlessly-yes even the stubborn eye makeup.  When I’m ready to rinse it off I apply the slightest amount of water and rub it over my face.  It really helps to break up anything lingering.  It has the slightest emulsification when adding the water-which I love!  Then I rinse with warm water and it comes off easily.  A lot of oil cleansers you have to really rub off with a washcloth to get the product off but not with this cleanser.  It’s so nice to have it come off so easy.  My skin feels perfectly balanced after cleansing-not too dry or oily.   Get the Maya Chia Cleanser here!

Beauty Heroes was founded by Jeannie Jarnot.  A longtime spa director herself and healthy beauty expert.  I had the pleasure of meeting Jeannie last year at IBE, and she is truly one of the sweetest people.  Beauty Heroes is a monthly beauty service that selects only the best clean beauty brands.  Each month you can find one to two full size truly heroic products in each box.  The products typically range from skincare to haircare products.  However, every 3 months Beauty Heroes offers a makeup box as well that’s optional for members or non-members.  I absolutely love their “Use Less, Love More” philosophy.  By only getting one or two products, you allow yourself to truly experience them.  Of course you can trust their picks, as they are strict on their integrity standards.  What’s not to love about this whole concept?  As a Beauty Heroes Ambassador, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to be part of such a movement.

Ok, on to the Beauty Heroes sale!

I wanted to share some of my very favorite brands with you that Beauty Heroes carries in their Beauty Store.  They really do carry the best of the best and have so much to offer when it comes to natural skincare, natural body care and even natural makeup.

Below are some of my favorite brands you can find at Beauty Heroes and the products I love from each brand.

Beauty Heroes Store-

OSEA

If you’re not familiar with OSEA allow me to fill you in on this natural skincare line.  This brand is truly unique.  I was so intrigued by the founder Jenefer’s story of how she started it.  She was inspired by her grandmother who credits the ocean to healing her.  She had been on bedrest after a severe leg injury.  Her grandmother recalls having a dream about the sea and the next day went for a swim.  A few weeks later her grandmother was healed!  Jenefer went to her roots when creating OSEA.  From what she learned from her grandmother of the healing properties of the ocean and her knowledge, she chose seaweed as the base of her skincare line.  Seaweed contains powerful minerals and ingredients to help restore and nourish the skin. And of course Beauty Heroes carries the line!

Hyaluronic Sea Serum- It’s no wonder this serum was awarded Best Beauty Award in Style for 2017!  It works and works well!  If you have dry skin or wrinkles this is for you.  It instantly adds moisture to thirsty skin and smooths fine lines.  Hyaluronic acid is known for it’s ability to attract moisture to the skin.  Just to give you a little visual, hyaluronic acid attracts 1,000 times it’s weight in water- making it a powerful player in improving elasticity.  Your skin will feel supple and smooth.  Not only does this serum have hyaluronic acid but also three different kinds of organic seaweed that help deliver antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.  In other words it’s a powerhouse serum for the skin! Shop the hyaluronic sea serum!

Ocean Cleanser- This cleanser is a definite fave!  I love that it comes in a frosted glass bottle- so chic.  It’s such an overall soothing cleanser, yet highly effective. It removes all my my makeup and grime from the day- yes even my stubborn eye makeup.  I get my skin damp first and then apply several pumps to my hands.  Then I rub in circular motions all over my face.  After rinsing with water my skin feels so hydrated, and clean.  Not stripped or dry.  It does such a great job of imparting hydration to the skin, and nourishing it with vitamins and minerals.  Did I mention it smells like candy?!  Shop OSEA cleanser here!

Undaria Body Polish- This body polish is unlike any I’ve used.  It is creamy in consistency but yet strong enough to remove and exfoliate unwanted dry skin. After using it my skin looks slightly pink and plump.  It takes dull skin and gives it a good polish, revealing the brightest and prettiest skin.  Upon opening it, you’re greeted with scents of lavender and Sweet Melissa.  It awakens your senses and revitalizes your whole body.  It exfoliates the skin with powdery grains of pumice, acai, and guarana.  I get my body wet first, and then apply the body polish and use circular motions to rub it in.  A serious skin treat! Get it here.

Leahlani Skincare

First, before I tell you about the skincare line, I must tell you about the creator herself, Leah.  A true artist when it comes to skin, Leah dealt with her own set of skin issues.  Through her own skin struggles, she believes fate led her to pursue a career in skincare, and become a holistic esthetician.  Leah learned so much firsthand being a spa director, and then having her own practice.  This journey not only led her to find her passion, but it paved the way for Leahlani Skincare to be born.  Leah wanted to create a skincare line that would be a, “ritual and not a routine.”  Well she definitely achieved that and so much more. Oh and side note, to know Leah is to love her!  She is a serious sweetheart, and has a heart of gold. I was so excited when Beauty Heroes started to carry the brand.

Mermaid Mask- This mask is seriously so good.  I was out of it for several months(shame on me) and the first time using it again I promised to never be without it again!  This green goodness makes me happy every time I put it on.  Many people ask what mask they should buy when transitioning to green beauty and this is it!  I promise you will love it and thank me.  Her mask is a little piece of heaven.  With ingredients like Chlorella, sea buckthorn, spirulina and raw honey, this mask is pure decadence.  A lot of masks moisturize after wearing, but you don’t notice a visible difference to the naked eye.  Not the case with the Mermaid Mask, you’ll be glowing!  It smells so insanely good too.  You’ll be tempted to eat it. Get the mermaid mask here!

Mahina- This baby quickly became a fave.  It not only hydrates your skin, but nourishes it with nutrients while you sleep.  You wake up with smooth, even skin.  One particular oil that Leah put in that I love is prickly pear seed oil.  It has been known to help brighten skin, fight signs of aging and moisturize like crazy.  A definite home run oil.  The biggest thing I noticed right away with Mahina is how much it calmed my redness.  Especially around my nose.  My skin felt replenished and soothed.  The smell is of course wonderful too!  Notes of citrus mixed with vanilla…can’t go wrong with that.  Oh and your skin doesn’t feel greasy-which I love.  Shop Mahina here!

Bless Beauty Balm- I recently tried this toner out from the line.  I’ve tried most Leahlani products but I hadn’t tried the toners yet.  This toner is all about soothing and balancing the skin.  The smell is seriously tantalizing!  All of Leahlani skincare smells so good.  I spray it on in the mornings to help wake me up.  It perks my skin right up.  One thing I really love about this toner is how hydrating it feels on the skin.  It instantly preps my skin for my serums and oils.  I’ve even sprayed it during the day when I just need a quick pick me up.  Have I mentioned I love the smell?!  Yeah, it’s that good.  Get it-you’ll love it! Shop Bless Beauty Balm here.

Bluh Alchemy

The products are infused with highly potent plant actives that really complement one another.  The whole Bluh Alchemy line is mean to target the signs of aging skin and to deliver highly active plant ingredients that help protect against the environment and stress.  Their formulations are filled with bioactive, organic and wild harvested ingredients.  This is what skincare dreams are made of!

Botanic- Retinol- This is one skin transforming product!  It contains the beloved Bakuchiol. The only plant-derived retinol that has been proven to produce results!  I’m talking increase collagen, improve the skin’s elasticity and support skin’s firmness.  You could say it’s a one-two punch for giving skin it’s youthful glow back.  It does what you want conventional retinol to do but without the negative side effects.  Not only does it include the superstar Bakuchiol but also a ton of other active plant oils from carrot, fig, cacay and watermelon.  All rich with Vitamin A.  Plus, it doesn’t stop there.  This also hydrates your skin with lupine ceramides and lupine amino acids.  It’s basically your new BFF when it comes to effective skincare.  Get it here!

Multi-C Serum- It’s actually more stable than any other Vitamin C!  This serum has a multitude of Vitamin C’s all wrapped into one.  From quandong and sea buckthorn berry oils.  When you combine them together they are a force to be reckoned with!  It’s no secret Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can brighten, lighten and create a glowing complexion.  Plus, this unique formula has peptides that help to firm the skin, green coffee, and ferric acid.  Say bye to dull, ruddy skin and hello to glowing, radiant skin!  I use it after toning my skin at night and in the morning.  I noticed an improved overall texture, glow and evenness to my skin.  I love how it absorbs so effortlessly into the skin.  And can we talk about the luxe frosted glass bottle?  I love how it pumps how and has a cap- so easy for travel. I can’t wait to keep using it! Get it here.

Eye Oil Serum- I’ve been testing this eye oil serum out and LOVE!  I’m not big into creams for the under eye area for me personally because I tend to get milia if I use anything too heavy.  This is just the right amount of hydration but not too much.  It comes in a glass rollerball and you just apply it right onto the under eye area.  I love how it feels cooling with the rollerball.  The formula doesn’t feel to greasy.  It really seeps right into the eye area.  I use this in the morning and at night. I find in the morning it’s nice for a little de-puffing with the cooler rollerball.  Get it here.

Ursa Major

I love that they keep things simple in the Ursa Major Skincare line.  They are obsessed with natural skincare and creating formulas that truly work.  They spend much of their time focused wholeheartedly on what products they are actually creating.  They don’t want another product sitting on the shelf but something that they love.  They want products that perform and only have the essentials, not a long laundry list of ingredients.  Simple is best.  Lastly, they’re line is focused on all gender types- so it works for everyone!

Golden Hour Recovery Cream- I recently discovered this cream a couple months ago and have been loving it. This has been the perfect moisturizer to add on top of my oils in the morning and at night for a little extra hydration.  I even used this when we were up in the mountains sledding for the day and it kept my skin feeling so hydrated and protected.  Not only does this cream moisturize but also provide great anti-aging benefits with it’s naturally rich antioxidants.  It seeps into my skin so well, and doesn’t feel greasy.  My hubs has been stealing this from me too-that means it’s good people!  He can be pickier than me at times.  What’s even better is the price tag on this cream, $48!  A steal for a green beauty cream that works and is full of skincare actives! Check it out here!

Go Easy Shampoo and Conditioner- This is such a good all around shampoo and conditioner.  It really makes my hair feel extra clean and bouncy.  Not a heavy shampoo at all.  It still lathers a little too which I love.  It smells of citrus mixed with a little sandalwood.  The conditioner is light, yet my hair still feels hydrated. My husband also loves this shampoo too.  I have fine hair and it really gives it the clean feeling.  If you’ve been around clean beauty for any length of time then you know it can be hard to find a shampoo and conditioner that get the job done.  My sister tried it and she has thick coarse hair and she didn’t love it.  I know everyone has a different hair type so wanted to throw that out there.  Get it here!

Maya Chia

The all star ingredient in Maya Chia is the supercritical chia oil.  Not only is chia oil heralded for it’s fast absorbing ability, but also for it’s antioxidants, minerals, and omega’s- a skin’s dream team!  You can say bye to fine lines and wrinkles.  Plus, it has clinically been proven to increase hydration. Check out my full review on Maya Chia I did to learn about how they extract the chia oil!

The Optimist-  This gem is housed in a dark glass bottle, preserving every last drop of goodness.  Smells divine with hints of neroli, sweet orange, and ylang ylang.  The formula itself feels so hydrating on the skin and refreshing with white tea, antioxidants, fatty acids and phytonutrients- just to name a few.  I can’t forget the actual spray function.  It works so well!  I know it might sound funny, but after trying hundreds of mists in my day, the spray function is actually quite important.  You don’t want the mist to feel like it’s attacking your skin or spraying you in the eye!  The Optimist sprays so well all over the face.  The founder Susanne nailed it! Get it here!

The Super Couple- Ok, so this is the serum that started my infatuation with Maya Chia!  I did a whole YouTube video on this product.  You can watch it here.  So why all the fuss?  Well, for starters it melts right into your skin.   No oily residue at all.  Perfect for at night, and during the day before makeup. Get it here.

Highlight Of The Day- My Maya Chia review wouldn’t be complete without talking about these little guys!  Where do I start?!  I’ve fallen hard for them.  So what is The Highlight of The Day?  It is this bottle filled with liquid radiance- I know sounds too good to be true, but it’s not.  It comes in two shades.  Golden hour- a golden, warm champagne radiance and Happy Hour- a cool pink toned radiance.  You apply it really however you want!  I love applying mine on my upper cheek bone, bridge of my nose, in the upper middle section of my brows, cupid’s bow, and middle of chin.  All the normal places you would use a traditional highlighter.  You can even apply it on the inner corners of your eyes to wake them up.  You can apply it over your foundation or mix it with your foundation or just where it by itself. Get it here.

The Straight A Serum- This is Maya Chia’s newest product.  I have been using this for a while and definitely can speak to the overall experience of it.  It contains the plant retinol bakuchiol which I’ve used before in other skincare products and it also contains moth bean extract- another plant derived retinol.  But it also contains an advanced retinol using an encapsulated Retinol.  This is a derivative of Vitamin A without BHT.  BHT has been shown to cause live damage in rats even in small amounts.  Plus, the supply chain with BHT is very unstable.  Besides the powerful retinols it also contains Vitamin C and Vitamin E.  These brighten the skin and help fade hyperpigmentation.  You’re also going to get some serious hydration from this serum with Buriti oil, and chia seed oil. Check out The Straight A Serum here.

Free + True Skincare

Free + True is known for simplifying skincare routines.  If you’re wanting to clean up your routine and make things a little less complicated Free + True is the perfect skincare line for you!  It really streamlines the whole process and makes things so much easy.  With their botanical formulations and real food ingredients, Free + True makes creating a natural skincare routine easy. I was so glad I found this product through Beauty Heroes!

Ramblin Rose Soothing Hydrating Serum- This formula is so good!  I was introduced to it by Beauty Heroes and have since not been able to put it down.  I used it consistently for months and I kept looking at my skin thinking, wow it’s never looked better!  Trust me, that’s saying a lot considering I’m always analyzing my skin in some way or another.  My skin looked bright and even and my hyperpigmentation on one side of my face was virtually gone.  I couldn’t believe it!  I’ve always struggled with hyperpigmentation on one side of my face.  So seeing it so even was amazing!  This is a serum so it has a smaller molecular size than other products so it’s able to seep deeper into the skin and really deliver nutrients.  It’s filled with all star ingredients like pomegranate juice, hibiscus extract, rose and neroli flower waters, Vitamin B5, and white tea extract.  The hibiscus extract is especially great because it contains Vitamin C which has a brightening effect on the skin, as well as giving it an overall brightness.  I would put this on at night right before my oil or moisturizers.  It also works so well right before make-up too. Can’t recommend it enough!  Get it

Body Prophet It wouldn’t be right not to include this product in the best natural and organic brands for May!  Obsessed with this body lotion! I was introduced to the brand in a Beauty Heroes box this year and fell in love with this product.  For a beauty blogger to go through a product you know it’s a big deal!  I literally am currently scraping the bottom of the bottle- it’s that good.  I love how it comes in a glass pump bottle, makes it so easy for application.  I also love how it smells.  Such a light scent, nothing overwhelming.  Plus, it has antioxidants that help to protect your skin.  The overall feel is so lightweight.  It absorbs instantly into the skin and doesn’t leave behind a greasy residue.  I want another bottle stat!  If you’re looking for a new body lotion- this is it.  Get it here!

Mukti Organics

The brand Mukti is from Australia and really is a pioneer when it comes to incorporating their native resources into their products.  Their mantra is to be organic, sustainable and ethical in all that they do.  Their formulas are the real deal and don’t contain any unnecessary fillers.  Just potent botanical ingredients that do the work for the skin. I love that their ingredients are third party tested, ensuring that products are in fact eco and meet their strict criteria. They have an advanced extraction method that helps them to preserve the products so they are represented in their most potent state.  They really take it to the next level when it comes to creating something truly special in a skincare brand. I feel like there are two heroic products for this month, even though technically one is a sidekick- read on to see why! Love that you can get this Australian brand at Beauty Heroes.

2-in-1 Resurfacing Exfoliants- My clean beauty skincare routine just got a whole lot better with this product!  I was introduced to it back in April’s Beauty Heroes box and I haven’t been able to stop using it- obsessed!  The exfoliant had me basically after the first application but sold me the more I used it.  This has a combination of fruit acids that help loosen and rid the intracellular bonds, while encouraging collagen production.  Then once the fruit acids do their thing, jojoba esters and finely ground bamboo particles remove the dead skin.  I used this in the morning first thing on damp skin.  I rubbed in circular motions.  Then brushed my teeth. Once I was done I rinsed it off.  My skin felt so smooth and radiant!  I used it twice a week.  If you have sensitive skin I would do a patch test first and then see how your skin does.  It smells amazing too!  Like fresh lime juice and it’s this beautiful emerald green.  This has been on repeat in my skincare routine!  You will be addicted.  Check it out here!

Mukti Hyaluronic Marine Serum- This is the heroic product for the month!  A serum of all serums.  This serum with it’s low molecular weight, absorbs so well into the skin.  It uses the power of hyaluronic acid to plump and hydrate the skin.  Did you know that hyaluronic acid delivers 1000% times it’s weight in water?  So if you’re skin feels dry or thirsty as I like to say- this is your new best friend!  The combination of hyaluronic acid, plus a special extract called Fucoidan that’s derived from Wakame Seaweed, is a one-two punch for preventing wrinkles from forming.  Get it here!

Evolvh

This organic hair brand has some of the best natural shampoo I've tried as well as some amazing natural styling products. So excited they're available at Beauty Heroes!

UltraShine Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner- I’ve been testing it out and have been super impressed with the overall formula.  My hair feels so bouncy and clean.  And the clean feeling lasts for days!  I get so much volume from this shampoo and conditioner, plus it foams too!  This works for any hair type.  I’ve used it and I have fine, thin hair.  My sister has used it and she has thick, fine hair.  I have a friend who loves it and she has coarse thick curly hair. It smells citrusy.  I really smell grapefruit to be exact. This is the shampoo I’ve been recommending for really any hair type.  It just gets the job done!  Especially great for someone who is used to mainstream shampoos and conditioners and wants one that is going to really get their hair clean. I can go multiple days between shampooing my hair with this shampoo. It was a no brainer for the best natural shampoo and conditioner’s post! Get it here!

Super Curl Defining Cream- I have been looking for a curl cream for my youngest daughter’s hair for while.  She has curly hair and I wanted a product that would help define it and give it some weightless hold and add a little hydration.  The Evolvh Super Curl Defining Cream does just that.  It really gives the curl a more defined look overall.  You are left with a smooth defined curl and no frizz.  It doesn’t weigh down the hair either.  I apply a dime size drop in my hands, then while her hair is wet I apply it all over her hair with my hands.  Then I go back through and twist some of the curls.  Get it here!

Indie Lee

After being diagnosed with a tumor, Indie Lee set out on a journey to create a truly effective clean beauty routine. Indie Lee was birthed. She is on a mission to empower and educate others on a natural lifestyle.

Indie Lee Squalane Oil- Helps with texture and appearance of skin tone.  It nourishes the skin without feeling greasy.  Has a comedogenic rating of 0-1. I love how simplistic this oil is.  It literally only contains squalene oil- that’s it!  Great for sensitive skin and for improving the overall quality of the skin’s appearance.  Grab it here!

Innersense

When it comes to hair Innersense knows how to create great products.  I use some many of their styling products on the daily. The founders of Innersense, Greg and Joanne Starkman, were in the beauty and wellness industry for years when they realized their beliefs weren’t matching up with their professional lives.  This birthed Innersense, a company that prides itself on integrity.  Their whole philosophy is so commendable and just down right amazing!

I Create Lift Volumizing Foam- This foam is the best for giving your roots and hair the body and volume that lasts all day!  Literally my hair will still have volume after a couple days.  The best volumizing hair product I’ve found in organic beauty.  A lot of times I’ll wash my hair and then blow dry it before bed.  Once I’m done blow drying it I’ll stick it up in a high pony tail.  In the morning my hair is full of body from being up in the pony tail and using the volume foam- it’s so good!  Get it here.

Inner Peace Whipped Cream Texturizer- for defining my curls after styling and smoothing away frizz without greasiness. My hubs uses it everyday too and I use it on my kids as well- this product is well loved.  Get it here!

I Create Waves Salt Spray- is another favorite.  I spray this in my hair after styling and it gives it the beachy look so effortlessly.  Get it here.

Khus + Khus

Can I be honest, I really thought I had tried all the body oils/lotions out there…then I tried one of the body waxes by Khus+Khus and I was quickly mistaken.  This stuff is pure luxury and available at Beauty Heroes!

Body Waxes-  They are hydrating and soothing.  Depending on what your body needs, they treat the skin.  I love their Bleu Body Wax. This is another product from Khus Khus and smells amazing!  I love Blue Tansy if you can’t tell.  An amazing oil that really helps to calm and soothe the skin.  This soaks right into the skin and leave my skin feeling hydrated for days!  It makes me feel overall calmer when I use it too.  Blue Tansy just has that affect on me.  I can’t get enough of it.  It feels very rich, especially great if you have very dry skin and it’s sensitive or prone to redness. Get it here.

Sen Face Serum.  It was in my best of clean beauty 2018!  The face oil sinks right into your skin and nourishes it and leaves my skin glowing in the morning. The rosehip and Chamomile in it are so fresh and vibrant.  I love the ingredients too. Simple, yet powerful. I really loved seeing Helichrysum oil in the serum.  It’s long been noted to have anti-inflammatory activity, as well as lymph drainage and detoxification properties.  Really just a home run when it comes to a facial oil ingredient!  The formula is slighty blue tinted from the blue tansy.  It absorbs quickly into the skin and leaves my skin feeling so balanced and hydrated.  Loved waking up to clear, even skin!  I’ve been using this on the daily and can’t get enough.  Very impressed with the results so far and exited to continue using it! Get it here.

Hope this helped you find some products from Beauty Heroes!

Top 7 Natural Hairspray Products: A 2021 Guide

Top 7 Natural Hairspray Products: A 2021 Guide

I am going to be honest, this was a hard one for me to switch over to.  Not that I didn't want to, but there just wasn't a lot of natural hair sprays out there that actually performed.  Being a hairstylist makes it even harder.  But, thankfully, natural hairsprays have come a long way in the past 10 years, and there are non toxic ones that work.  Can I get an amen?!  Now I will give a little disclaimer.  These by no means are going to feel like an aerosol hairspray…yeah, sorry.  But once you get used to these top brands, you will never look back!  Oh, and I am including my top texture sprays for you too:)

What are the dangers of using conventional hairspray?

I think it is no secret that conventional hairspray has some less than stellar ingredients in it. It is these ingredients that are able to hold a hairstyle so well that also come with unwanted side effects.

Aerosol hairspray was actually developed from technology created during World War II that was used for bug spray in the Asian jungles. (1

The general makeup of conventional hairspray is as follows:

  • Holding Agents: Polymers which are chain like molecules and the ‘glue’ that will ultimately hold your hairstyle in place (most commonly polyvinylpyrrolidine (PPV) or vinyl acetate is sometimes mixed with PPV (PVPVA) for extra hold in humid conditions)
  • Solvent: Typically alcohol or hydrocarbons (used to be chlorofluorocarbons aka CFC’s until it was discovered how harmful these CFC’s were to the atmosphere and ozone layer). It is the solvent that evaporates to allow the polymer to hold your hair in place.
  • Additives: This includes things like essential oils, fragrance, conditioning agents or silicone.
  • Propellants: (non-aerosol products don’t contain): This is what actually pushes the product out of the container. An example would be isobutane.

So some big hitters for toxic ingredients have been taken out of hairspray over the years thankfully. However below are just some of the ingredients that are still in conventional hairspray that come with unwanted side effects:

  • Fragrance: The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) lists 3,059 materials that are reported as being used in fragrance compounds. Yikes! And when we use a product with fragrance, we have no idea which of these materials are in it because they don’t have to disclose it! This makes it impossible to make an informed choice. Of these 3,059 ingredients, some have evidence linking them to health effects including cancer, reproductive toxicity, allergies and sensitivities. (2)
  • Propellants: The same chemicals that are needed to create that lovely aerosol spray we all love are most often a chemical mix that includes Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s).  Exposure to VOC’s can lead to eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches, loss of coordination and nausea and potentially even worse! (3)
  • Parabens: Typically used as a preservative to prevent growth of unwanted microbes, these scary ingredients have been shown to have an effect on hormones in the body, potentially harm fertility and reproductive organs, affect birth outcomes and increase the risk of cancer (4)
  • Phthalates: An interesting fact: Adult women have higher levels of metabolites measured in urine than do men for those phthalates that are used in soaps, body washes, shampoos, cosmetics, and similar personal care products. (5) So finding products without these are a must!  Especially considering the effect they have on our endocrine system (think hormones). (6) Fragrance can commonly contain phthalates, so that is important to know too! Since phthalates might not be listed in the ingredients, but they could still be in your hairspray!

Obviously the more you use a product, the more exposure you will have to the toxic ingredients it has.  If you are using conventional hairspray daily, that is going to increase your exposure and your toxic load. Plus, did you know breathing in chemicals is the fastest way to get it into your bloodstream…scary.  Yeah, sorry but that stuff is just downright toxic and we don't want to be anywhere near it.

What exactly is a natural hair spray?

First, a natural hair spray will use more of a pumping mechanism versus a pressurized mist, so you’re less likely to breathe them in. And while they may not have the same hold as an aerosol, they also won’t be having those negative effects on you or the environment.

And the best part about a natural hairspray besides the lack of nontoxic ingredients is that it can even contain ingredients that are good for your hair!

Some of my favorite hair sprays contain things like herbal infusions that stimulate follicle circulation supporting continued hair growth and a healthy, nourished scalp. Or aloe, which research suggests (unfortunately no firm scientific link yet) that there is a positive correlation between this nourishing and hydrating ingredient and hair health. Or even essential oils that promote hair health.

And these are just a few examples! Ultimately, as always, check the ingredients in your beauty products to know what exactly you are using!

What are the best natural hairspray products?

DISCLAIMER:  My hair is thin and fine, so what works for mine may not be perfect for your hair.  However, I like each of these for different reasons and styles.

1. Josh Rosebrook Hair Spray

The best natural hairspray I’ve found!  It’s in pump form, there’s no aerosol.  I love the smell!  It has a list of essential oils but the ones that stick out to me are the rosemary and lavender.  I love knowing exactly what I’m breathing in, no hidden fragrance!  Second, it doesn’t goop up when you spray.  And it actually has a mist feel.  Yeah, pretty cool.  Lastly, it just works.  With my hair being fine and thin, this product delivers hold throughout the day, volume, and doesn’t get crunchy…you know what I’m talking about.  It’s just good stuff.  I would recommend this for anyone transitioning from a mainstream hairspray. Get it here!

2. Intelligent Nutrients Hair Spray

It holds up, is free of toxic chemicals and smells earthy.  It doesn't leave my hair with a plastic feeling, but just a really great medium hold.  I love that it feels light on my hair and doesn't weigh it down at all.  The spray is more direct than the Josh Rosebrook hairspray, and not as mist-like.  The Josh Rosebrook has a bit more hold to it as well.  This is more of a medium hold spray and I would recommend it for those with natural wavy/curly hair.  It's going to provide that hold but with a little swing to it.  This hairspray would also be good for someone with thick/coarse hair that doesn't need a ton of hold. Get it here!

3. Evolvh Ultraflex Hair Spray

This is a lighter hair spray overall.  It's alcohol free and quick drying.  It helps to refresh your style but doesn't leave it feeling sticky or heavy.  It’s also easy to brush out and restyle if you want the next day. It keeps my hairstyle pretty well even after brushing it out the next day but doesn’t feel dirty. More so like it has some texture in it.  Initially it will feel a little more wet, but it doesn’t stay like that. Get it here!

4. John Masters Hair Spray

This hair spray is a great alternative to conventional spray.  It comes in a pump form, not an aerosol.  It is a bit more of a wet formula.  I find myself using it on my daughter's hair more because it's less expensive and I can save the Josh Rosebrook for my hair;)  It comes in an 8 oz. bottle and is $24 and the Josh Rosebrook comes in a 4 oz. bottle and is the same price.  A little more bang for your buck! Get it here!

5. Giovanni Hair Spray

I really like this formula.  I just wish it didn’t have fragrance in it.  I used to do wedding hair a lot years ago and I would bring this along because it works so well and is cleaner than an aerosol spray.  It holds up extremely well.  I love the pump applicator, it comes out great.  It not only has extremely good hold, but also adds some shine too.  It is easy to find and can be found at a lot of natural food stores.  The downside is it’s not as clean as the other hair sprays.  As I mentioned above, it has natural fragrance in it.  And, it definitely smells like there is fragrance in it, so if you’re sensitive to fragrance, I would steer clear of this one.  It’s nice to have a better holding option however for special occasions! Get it here!

6. Innersense I Create Finish

This is a very lightweight hair spray and more nourishing and hydrating then any of the other sprays.  It’s a flexible hold.  Great for those who have drier hair, curly hair and just need a light hold with some added hydration.  For my fine, thin hair I found it didn’t provide enough holding power and was too hydrating.  I love the pump/mist on the bottle.  The hairspray comes out great. Get it here!

7. Andalou Naturals Sunflower & Citrus Hair Spray

This one is definitely the most budget friendly of all the hair sprays.  It is $9.99 for 8.2 oz.  It offers medium hold and some shine.  The sunflower and citrus scent isn’t overwhelming and dissipates fairly quickly.  I love using this on my kids too since it’s such a budget friendly option.  It feels a little sticky at first but then dries out and gives a nice flexible, medium hold.  And bonus, you can get it on Amazon!  If you look this up on EWG it will rank a 5, but it’s because of the essential oils, which unfortunately the computerized system of the EWG can’t take into account.  The only other ingredient it’s listing the 5 for is for Polysorbate 20, which ranks a 3 on the EWG for concerns of toxicity with 1,4 dioxane possibly being in the Polysorbate 20.  I’m ok with using it because it’s pretty small and I’m not directly applying it to my skin, but my hair.  Get it here!

What can be used instead of natural hair spray?

A firm hold isn’t always wanted when it comes to hairstyles, and that’s when I like to use more of a texture spray. Texture spray is meant to give more of an undone look. Thankfully, clean beauty brands offer some great choices when it comes to textures sprays too!  Here are my top 4 texture sprays!

1. Innersense I Create Waves Texture Spray

A lot of texture or salt sprays can weigh the hair down a bit.  Not this one.  It gives my hair some decent hold, almost like a subtle hair spray, and then it adds texture. Not a heavy texture that gets super crunchy.  This is an effortless texture that makes it feel like your hair just did it on it’s own.  I spray it in when it’s damp to add some texture and subtle wave and after styling my hair with a curling iron. Get it here!

2. Rahua Enchanted Island Salt Spray

I always love trying hair products that give hair some texture, while at the same time giving some hold and this product does just that.  It helps create more texture in my hair and make it more piecey looking.  Plus, it gives a great hold, without looking crispy.  The smell is so good too- takes you to the beach!  I even sprayed it in my hair without curling it and loved the texture it gave it. Get it here!

3. Herbivore Coconut Sea Mist Hair Texturizer

This sea salt spray really lives up to its name. It gives hair that beachy vibe instantly.  I love using it after curling my hair.  It brings some definition and hold to my style and makes the curls look less perfect.  It comes in two scents- coconut and lavender. I'm partial to the coconut smell! Get it here!

4. Captain Blankenship Sea Salt Spray

It gives me the tousled beach waves and texture.  It smells divine too!  I get notes of geranium and palmarosa.  This one has a little less hold overall than the other salt sprays and feels more hydrating. Get it here!

And there you have it!  All my favorite natural hair sprays along with some top picks for natural texture sprays.  What is your favorite natural hairspray?

First up is Beauty Heroes.

Beauty Heroes: Joaquina Botánica

I was excited to see a new brand in Beauty Heroes Box this month!  Joaquina Botanica is in the box.  The brands name comes from the founder's great grandmother who started the first apothecary in Cali, Colombia.  Giovanna Campagna, the founder, wanted to honor the natural beauty and rituals of Latin American women and so she created Joaquina Botanica.

The brand pays embodies the tropics with it's vibrant, natural botanicals, that are also laced with clinical actives. Loaded with South America- cacay, camu camu and sacha inchi, all rich in antioxidants.  They use oils as their delivery system.  Their formulas are also loaded with hyaluronic acid that helps to moisten and plump skin. It's a taste of tropical skincare!

Orquidea + Vitamin C Hydrating Glow Oil- This oil has dewy written all over it!  Have you ever been on a tropical island and your skin is plumped, and glowing from the humidity. This glow oil is that in a bottle.  The products has flora that is native to South America.  These oils are used in traditional healing and active botanicals. Orchid extract helps with firmness, elasticity.  Plus, it is packed full of antioxidants like camu camu and sacha inchi. It has a slight buttery sweet scent to it.  It is very hydrating overall and nourishing.  It even has the retinol alternative bakuchiol.  My skin felt all sorts of dewy and completely soft.  I loved waking up to the buttery soft texture and hydration still intact.  It works even during the day time if you really want to glow!

Calendula + Peptides Hydrating Essence- This essence is full of anti-inflammatory properties.  It has a blend of calendula, rose water, glycerin and hyaluronic acid.  This formula gives the skin an instant boost of plumpness and brightness.  Plus, it feels calmed and soothed as well.  The plant peptides from Amazonia superfruit sacha inchi help with fine lines and wrinkles.  It's also loaded with antioxidants from vitamin c-rich camu camu and combination of superfruits.  I love using this before my oils and serums, over makeup or just to wake myself up!

This Beauty Heroes Discovery is valued at $142, but you can get it for $58.95!  Get it here before they sell out.

The Detox Box: LXMI

Another brand that I had heard of but hadn't tried much of!  In this month's Detox Market Box we are seeing LXMI.  This is an organic skincare line, that features Nilotica, which is a rare shea butter that is sourced from the Nile River.  This shea butter is known for it's beautifying properties and how it benefits the skin.

The late Leila Janah made the Nilotica the focus of her beauty brand, all while giving back to Easy African Women who grow the nuts.  Sadly, Leila passed away in 2020.  The CEO of the brand, Anna-Maja Bjorkenvall, now carries the mission and message forward.

Pure Nilotica Melt- This is for skin that is feeling extra parched or cracked.  This features one ingredient that will deeply nourish the skin.  It is a balm to oil and instantly absorbs into the skin.  Say hello to brand new skin! I love applying this everywhere.  From my hands to my dry feet, elbows and even lips.

LXMI 33 Face Oil- This oil contains 33 nutrient oil that help to calm and soothe the skin, protect it and nourish it with hydration.  Your skin will be glowing and vibrant!  I apply this right to my skin after my serum and patting in gently all over.  You can even add the Pure Nilotica Melt over it for added hydration.  My skin drank up this oil.  It doesn't feel too greasy, but truly nourishing.

Copper Wand- Ok, I may have been the most excited to try this copper wand when I saw it in the package!  It is totally new for me.  It helps to de-puff and energize the skin. It's a mini facial massage you can do right in the comfort of your home.  One end you use to scoop the product onto your face and the other end you use to massage it in.  I liked using it specifically on my eyes.  You can even put it in the fridge for an added cooling sensation!

This Detox Box is valued at $144, but you can get it for $57.99!  Get it here before they sell out.

Boxwalla: Lepaar

I was so excited to dive into this box. I've used a couple of Lepaar's products in the past and was impressed so I couldn't wait to get my hands on these!  Lepaar is a luxury clean skincare brand.  It is slow, soulful beauty. Lepaar was founded by Johanna & Christo Everingham.  Johanna has been creating her own organic formulas for 20 years.  She was introduced to organic crafting by her alchemist mother.

Johanna & Christo combine their shared passion for exceptional quality & the revival of nurturing practices & lost widsom, to create ‘living objects’ be they skincare, clothing or even garden hoses. Their skincare line exemplifies the magic of slow whole-plant beauty. -Boxwalla

In this box we are seeing three products from their newly launched ‘Kairos Moment Capsule Collection'.  These products are meant to work together for a variety of skincare concerns.

Summer Wine Even Tone Antioxidant Shield- This is a cocktail of antioxidants that is made to help fight free radicals, pollution, soothe inflamed skin and even skin tone and hyperpigmentation.  You could say it's loaded! The formula is filled with sun-infused extracts of Primitivo Grapes, fermented Chardonnay grapes and seed and Shiraz leaves- all loaded with resveratrol. If that wasn't enough, it also has Dragon's Blood resin, Strawberry gum, Strawberry seed oil, Saffron, Mulberry leaves and Genetian in it.  I love how it felt soothing to my skin and really soaked in.  I can't wait to keep using it to see the full benefits!  Especially with hyperpigmentation.

Elastic Love Firming Face and Neck Oil- Ok, this product had me at neck oil!  Often you see so many products target to the face, often the neck can get neglected.  Which is sad because it's one of the first areas to show signs of aging.  This blend helps to not only tighten skin but make it firmer.  It has sun-infused extracts of Kangaroo's Paw Flower, Quince, Red Clover, Bamboo, Horsetail and Artichoke.  These are all mixed in with cold pressed seed oils.  It's a beautiful oil that helps to take back elasticity that may have gone and tighten the skin.  Plus, it increases collagen production!  It does a lot.  It smells like berries, not overwhelming.  I basically want to drench myself in this every night!  It sinks right into the skin.  This is definitely my fave out of the three!

Smooth Operator Unfolding Face Balsam- This product was created with a nod to artisan coffee- sign me up!  It contains coffee bean oil, Bacuri butter, Green coffee seed oil and more.  It helps to gives smoothness to the skin, while also keeping the hyaluronic acid intact.  This can even be used as an eye serum.  It doesn't feel too heavy.

This Boxwalla Box is valued at $188, but you can get it for $49.95!  Get it here before they sell out.
