Maya Chia Review

Maya Chia makes natural skincare products that give results- The Straight A Serum is no different!

Maya Chia Straight A Serum

So the Straight A Serum launched in 2020 and basically took the natural beauty realm by storm!  It was the first product that came to mind for the best of natural beauty for 2020.  This isn't just another serum.  It's a serum that means business and gets results…quickly.  I have been using this for a while and definitely can speak to the overall experience of it.  My skin looks brighter, more even and overall alive and not dull.  I use it at night. It contains the plant retinol bakuchiol which I’ve used before in other skincare products and it also contains moth bean extract- another plant derived retinol.  But it doesn't stop there.  The formula also has an advanced retinol using an encapsulated Retinol.  This is a derivative of Vitamin A without BHT.  BHT has been shown to cause live damage in rats- even in small amounts.  Conventional retinol typically contains BHT.   Plus, the supply chain with BHT is very unstable.

Besides the powerful retinols it also contains Vitamin C and Vitamin E.  These brighten the skin and help fade hyperpigmentation.  You’re also going to get some serious hydration from this serum as well with Buriti oil, and chia seed oil.   I can't tell you how many people have used this and have become sold overnight- literally.   A skin changing serum for sure!  Don't forget to check out my full Maya Chia review here. Check out The Straight A Serum here.

This Body Prophet is what body moisturizer dreams are made of!

Free + True Body Prophet

I discovered this stand out body lotion in a Beauty Heroes box.  If you are a natural beauty lover then you'll want to check out this box.  They deliver the best of the best in natural beauty to your doorstep each month for a fraction of the cost.  Subscribe here.  Anyways, I instantly fell for this luxe body lotion after one application.

They actually call it a body serum.  In my mind it's a cross between a body oil and a lotion- it's like a creamy lotion/oil.  Whatever, you want to call it, it's so good.  I literally finished the whole bottle and was scraping the insides for more.  For a beauty blogger to go through a product you know it’s a big deal!  I love how it comes in a glass pump bottle, makes it so easy for application.  I also love how it smells- with hints of ylang ylang, rosemary and pomegranate.  Such a light scent, nothing overwhelming.  Plus, it has antioxidants that help to protect your skin like olive leaf extract which is 2.5 times higher in antioxidants that Vitamin C or E.  It also has pumpkin seed oil, aloe vera juice and sea buckthorn berry.   The overall feel is so lightweight.  It absorbs instantly into the skin and doesn’t leave behind a greasy residue.  I want another bottle stat!  If you’re looking for a new body lotion- this is it.  Get it here!

I've been wearing these Ilia Chromatic Liquid Eyeshadows everyday!

Ilia Liquid Chromatic Eye Serums

These came out in the fall of 2020 and let's just say we quickly became besties.  It was love at first swipe!  If you've been in natural beauty for a minute then you know it's hard to find a liquid eye shadow that lasts and doesn't fade.  I hadn't found one until these showed up.  They come in a tube that looks like lip gloss but there's no gloss inside, instead there's a creamy consistency that swipes on the eye effortlessly.  I apply the product right on my eye and then use my finger to blend in.  They blend in so easy!  The best part?  They stay put the WHOLE day.  Yes, not like typical liquid shadow these stand the test of time.  I love applying them underneath powdered shadows too.  It really helps the color to pop even more and gives the powdered shadow something to adhere too.  They are a great eyeshadow primer!

I have four colors, Glean, Mythic, Sheen and Fresco- all gorgeous and layer so well on top of each other.  I've even used the lightest shade Glean as a highlighter!  Works so well.  I highlight the typical areas of my face- cupid's bow, middle of forehead, upper cheekbone, bridge of nose and middle of chin.  I love how they can be used for multiple things.  Can't recommend them enough!  Check out more Ilia products I love here.  Get them here.

This mask has been in heavy rotation in my skincare routine!

Alpyn Beauty Wild Huckleberry 8-Acid Polishing Peel

This is another favorite that launched this past fall from Alpyn Beauty.  Read my review here of some of their other stellar products– you could say I'm obsessed with the line!  Had to include it in the natural beauty for 2020 post.  I remember opening the lid and instantly falling in love with the scent- SO good.  It smells like berry pie!  I want to eat it- trust me one whiff and you'll understand what I mean.

It leaves your skin smooth, hydrated and soft- all within 5 minutes.  It's a mask, a peel and a polish all in one.  If you've been wanting one product that does it all look no further.  The blend of antioxidant rich wild huckleberry and white willow bark instantly give your skin glow worthy results.  It also boasts a proprietary AHA/BHA blend of Citric, Malic, Tartaric, Glycolic, Azelaic, Ferulic & Lactic Acids.  It’s a mini facial in a jar.  Perfect before putting on makeup for the day to get the smoothest makeup application or at night to unwind and set your skin up for success at night.  If you're a skincare minimalist this could be your new jam since it does so many things.  Smooth radiant skin has never been easier.  I love applying this at night and waking up to smooth, glowing skin.  But I also love using it first thing in the morning to really get my skin moving and radiant.  Get it here!

This cleanser does it all!

Beuti Skincare Pomegranate Glow Enzyme Cleanser

So I have to give a huge shout out to one of my favorite clean beauty stores Aillea.  They sent me this cleanser and let's just say I was so impressed after the first use.  This is what I expect from my cleanser.  I want it to remove all my makeup and not leave any residue- this includes mascara.  I want to be able to just rinse it off with water and not have to use a washcloth.  Now most oil cleansers you need a washcloth and I'm not saying I don't love oil cleansers but overall I prefer a cleanser that doesn't require an extra step like using a washcloth in this season of my life(hello 1 year old, a 4 year old and a 6 year old).  So you can imagine my delight when I used this cleanser for the first time and it removed all my makeup- yes even the stubborn mascara rinsed off with water.  Plus, my skin still felt hydrated and had a subtle glow to it.

It's a 3-in-1 cleanser.  I guess you could say I was into the multi-use products this last year! Not only does it act as a cleanser but also gently exfoliates with enzymes as well.  It can also be used as a facial mask if you leave it on for 5-10 minutes.  The best of all the worlds!   So if you're needing a good cleanser, gentle exfoliant, mask- look no further!  I'm also a huge fan of the Beuti Sleep Elixir as well.  Kate Middleton is obsessed too- just sayin'. Get the Beuti Glow Enzyme Cleanser here!

This is a skin game changer!

Beautycounter All Bright C Serum

Natural beauty for 2020 wouldn't be complete without the Beautycounter All Bright C Serum.  Beautycounter came out with this in the spring and it sold out right away.  This Vitamin C Serum is packed with all the things!  You apply this serum first thing in the morning before you apply your makeup.  It helps to protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun and environmental damage.  It’s filled with a 10% stable blend of Vitamin C that helps to brighten your complexion, while also reducing dark spots.  It also has camu camu and tumeric, heavy hitting antioxidants that help protect your skin from new hyperpigmentation.  My skin is brighter and younger looking.  If you’ve tried it then you know!  Perfect for anyone wanting to take their skincare to the next level.  Get it here!

I've gotten so many people hooked!  Their response is, “My skin looks so bright and even.”  I couldn't agree more.  My skin loves it.  I love the fresh smell too.  When it comes to Vitamin C serums this is one you're going to want to have in your skincare arsenal.  I apply mine after cleansing and toning in the morning before my moisturizer.  Get it here!

aluminum free deodorant

Primally Pure's Blue Tansy Deodorant and Charcoal Deodorant have won my heart!

Primally Pure Deodorants

This has been a long time fave when it comes to natural deodorant.  If you've been around the natural beauty scene for any length of time then you know finding a deodorant that works can be hard.  Primally Pure solves the problem!  They take the natural deodorant cake in all areas.  From affordable price, squeaky clean ingredients, and smell good scents that don't irritate the skin.  Overall, the formula works so well!  They have a couple blog posts that really help understand natural deodorant.  Check out what you need to know about using natural deodorant and also their blog post on the science of natural deodorant and why their formula works so well.

My hubs loves the Charcoal Deodorant.  I love their Blue Tansy.  Although I tried the Charcoal and I have to say I would use that any day too!  It's crazy because the more I tell people about their deodorants, the more feedback I hear on how amazing they are.  It seems to work for the majority of people.

If you haven't been able to get your husband to make the switch I recommend grabbing him a Primally Pure Deodorant.  The Formula goes on so smooth and doesn't cause any irritation.  I smell fresh all day long.  The Blue Tansy smell is just so good!  I also love how the charcoal smells minty fresh- I'm here for all the mint!  Check out all their deodorant scents here.

This is your new favorite foundation! It feels like your skin but offers great coverage…Skin Twin has my heart!

Beautycounter Skin Twin Foundation

Since this just came out from Beautycounter and I can't stop using it!  It's such an amazing formula.  They've been working on it for quite some time and they did not disappoint.  Filled with skin loving ingredients like hyaluronic acid that literally give your skin a surge of hydration and draw moisture to your skin.  It offers buildable coverage. So you can opt for a more lightweight feel or you can apply more product and get more of a full coverage look.  It doesn't feel like you're wearing anything!  It truly lives up to it's name- Skin Twin.  Your skin but enhanced.  It gives you an overall polished look without look cakey or heavy.  I apply the foundation after I've applied my oils or moisturizers.  It glides on so smoothly.  I wear the color 340 with self tanner and 310 if I'm not wearing self tanner.  Check it out here!

This exfoliant does it all and leaves your skin smooth and glowing!

Mukti Organics 2-in-1 Resurfacing Exfoliant

My clean beauty skincare routine just got a whole lot better with this product this past year!  I was introduced to it back in April’s Beauty Heroes box and I haven’t been able to stop using it- obsessed!  The exfoliant had me basically after the first application but sold me the more I used it.  This has a combination of fruit acids that help loosen and rid the intracellular bonds, while encouraging collagen production.  Then once the fruit acids do their thing, jojoba esters and finely ground bamboo particles remove the dead skin.  I use this in the morning first thing on damp skin.  I rub in circular motions.  Then brush my teeth. Once I'm done I rinse it off.  My skin feels so smooth and radiant!  I use it twice a week.  If you have sensitive skin I would do a patch test first and then see how your skin does.  It smells amazing too!  Like fresh lime juice and it’s this beautiful emerald green.  This has been on repeat in my skincare routine!  You will be addicted.  Check it out here!

The Christina Moss Shampoo and Conditioner was a product that had me coming back for more!

Christina Moss Shampoo and Conditioner

I posted my full organic shampoo post this last year.  The Christina Moss Shampoo and Conditioner was one shampoo and conditioner I could't shake- it was so good!  What I loved about it was the fact that I could use it on my fine/thin hair and love it and my sister could use it on her thick hair and it work just as well. This is great for any hair type.  Comes in a tube and a little goes a long way.  Suds up a little and gets my hair feeling clean.  It doesn't have a scent!  It is made for the most sensitive scalps.  I love that it doesn't have a scent. I've found a lot of people are sensitive to scent near their head especially.   It's also pretty budget friendly for a clean shampoo- $19.99!  Super impressed with the ingredients.  They really hit it out of the park with this one.  Especially great if you don't do scents or have a sensitive scalp. Get it here!

These natural beauty products have been standouts for years!

I couldn't let the natural beauty of 2020 post be complete without sharing some bonus faves that continue to rock my world year after year!

  • Josh Rosebrook Hair- The best natural hairspray I’ve found peeps-let it be known! I love the smell!  It has a list of essential oils but the ones that stick out to me are the rosemary and lavender.  I love knowing exactly what I’m breathing in, no hidden fragrance!  Second, it doesn’t goop up when you spray.  It actually has a mist feel.  Yeah, pretty cool.  Lastly, it just works.  With my hair being fine and thin, this product delivers hold throughout the day, volume, and doesn’t get crunchy…you know what I’m talking about.  It’s just good stuff.  I would recommend this for anyone transitioning from a mainstream hairspray.  You need it, trust me!  Grab it here!
  • Honest Beauty Mascara- This is hands down my favorite natural mascara in clean beauty currently.  I know, that says a lot but it’s true.  The formula checks all the boxes.  It offers thickness, length, separation- it’s just awesome!  The formula isn’t too dry or too wet and I love that I don’t have to apply 5 coats of mascara to see product on my lashes.  In just two coats my lashes are instantly lengthened, thicker and have overall more volume.  I’m sold!  On one end of the mascara wand is a primer and the other the mascara color.  I apply the primer first and then the mascara.  It doesn't smudge by the end of the day either- it's a win/win overall.  Get it here!
  • Innersense Whipped Creme Texturizer- I use this product everyday on my girl’s hair, on my hair and my hub’s uses it, I'm even using it on my little guy now!  You could say it’s well loved.  It helps to define curls, eliminate frizz and smooth hair, as well as add a bit of texture.  I love using it on my hair after I curl it to leave it with some texture, and give it a tousled look.  Can’t recommend it enough!  We can't be without it in our house. Get it here.
  • Live Botanical Glowing Honey Mask- This mask began my love affair with Live Botanical.  I love it!  It makes my skin glow in minutes- no joke!  I apply it all over in the morning and then grab my toothbrush and then rinse off once I’m done brushing my teeth.  It feels so hydrating and soothing to the skin.  It gives a slight exfoliation too with herbal grains.  The raw honey in this mask draws moisture to the skin while soaking up all the excess oils at the same time.  What I love is that this mask can be used daily as a cleanser or as a mask a couple times a week. Use code: GURLGONEGREEN for 20% off at Live Botanical.  Shop here!
  • Beautycounter Sheer Genius Conditioning Lipstick- I love how these feel on my lips.  They're hydrating, give a slight sheen and give the perfect subtle pop of color.  They are the everyday lip product you won't want to stop wearing.  I have Rose, Lilac Petal and Rosewood. Check them out here!

Clean Beauty Box Roundup January

Clean Beauty Box Roundup January

Sharing the clean beauty box roundup for January!  Anyone else wondering how on earth it is already January?!  So ready for a new year though and I'm sure everyone else is as well.  I'll be sharing the clean beauty box roundup for January on the blog.  First up is Beauty Heroes and then I'll be sharing more as they are released throughout the month.

Beauty Heroes January Box – Fitglow Beauty

Another stellar box from Beauty Heroes- Featuring the one and only Fitglow Beauty!

I was so excited when I found out Fitglow Beauty would be in this month's Beauty Heroes Box- YES!  I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Anna, the founder of FitGlow and I just love her whole outlook and ethos.  She really lives what she preaches and her skin is a testament to it.  Anna, the founder is a longtime fitness and health guru that battled sensitive rosacea skin.  She wanted products that would help her skin not turn bright red during workouts and be effective.  With over 10 years of research in plant based ingredients, Anna discovered ingredients that feed and nourish the skin. FitGlow Beauty, a Canadian born company, was created to be with you wherever the day may take you.  From yoga, to the office and everything in between.  They actually have subjects test their products while running and doing yoga, to ensure they perform in any condition…how cool is that?  Their beauty products are not only clean, and non-toxic but nourishing to the skin.  Full of active ingredients-vitamins that feed your skin, and organic extracts.  This line doesn’t mess around. They’re also Leaping Bunny certified-no animal testing happening here and gluten free.

Night Essense- I've tried a handful of products from Fitglow Beauty but had never tried their Night Essence.  I knew it would be something special as it's Beauty Heroes heroic product for the month.  The ingredients alone really make it stand out.  From Aloe, Kojic acid, Bakuchiol- a plant-derived retinol, nicainamied- one of my favorite skincare ingredients, hyaluronic acid and rose.  This treatment is meant to transform your skin at night.  It essentially does the work for you while you sleep- sign me up for that!  It helps to hydrate the skin, brighten, as well as deliver antioxidant protection.  Who doesn't want that?!   Plus, with it's super star ingredient line up it really works at erasing the appearance of wrinkles.  It's basically your news bestie in the form of a skincare product.

It comes in a spray form.  You mist it liberally on your skin and then follow with normal serum, oil, moisturizer.  It feels hydrating upon application and quickly melts into the skin.  I love how smooth my skin feels afterwards.  It smells lovely too.  Hints of orchid, rose, and peony envelope you.  This is one product I won't be putting down anytime soon!

Vita Rich Creme- This is the new and improved Vita Rich Creme!  This has long been a favorite from Fitglow Beauty and now they kicked it up a notch and are offering if with even more skin loving ingredients.  You get all the things you love about the original, plus more hydrating hyaluronic acid, bakuchiol, and cell regenerating glutathione.  Yeah, it just got really good!  This moisturizer hydrates deep and helps to protect the skin from trans epidermal water loss.  It also helps to support collagen synthesis and combat hyperpigmentation.  It does all of this and still has it's famous weightless feel!

It feels very similar to the old Vita Rich Creme but enhanced with all the new actives.  I feel like my skin is getting so much in one application, besides just hydration.  Perfect for the winter season as skin is more dry and parched.  I have used it at night and in the morning.

Night Lip Serum- Oh how I love this lip serum!!  I use this every night- yes every night.  I've been hooked on Fitglow Beauty's Night Serum for over a year.  It not only hydrates my lips and makes them feel silky smooth, but it also delivers proven plant extracts and vitamins.  These nourish the lips at night, all while fighting signs of aging.  Say bye to fine lines on the lips!  From ingredients like pomegranate plant sterols, beet extract, vegan collagen and more- these all work to fight the signs of aging.  I apply this at night as the last step in my skincare routine.  It feels rich and nourishing on the lips.

This box is so good and such a good value!  It's worth $185 but you can get it for $58.95.  Get it now before it sells out!

The Detox Box January- Evolvh

So excited to see one of my favorite clean beauty hair brands in the Detox Box this month!

I was giddy with excitement when I saw that Evolvh was going to be in this month's Detox Box- can you say YASS!  I love this clean beauty hair care line.  I first tried their shampoo and it won me over.  I was excited to dive into some of their other styling products as well.  I love how Detox Box switches things up and offers a hair box- so fun!

Ultrashine Moisture Shampoo- I’ve been testing it out and have been super impressed with the overall formula.  My hair feels so bouncy and clean.  And the clean feeling lasts for days!  I get so much volume from this shampoo and conditioner, plus it foams too! Any hair type.  I've used it and I have fine, thin hair.  My sister has used it and she has thick, fine hair.  I have a friend who loves it and she has coarse thick curly hair. Smells citrusy.  I really smell grapefruit to be exact. This is the shampoo I've been recommending for really any hair type.  It just gets the job done!  Especially great for someone who is used to mainstream shampoos and conditioners and wants one that is going to really get their hair clean. I can go multiple days between shampooing my hair with this shampoo.

TotalControl Styling Creme- I have been looking for a curl cream for my youngest daughter’s hair for while.  She has curly hair and I wanted a product that would help define it and give it some weightless hold and add a little hydration.  The Evolvh Super Curl Defining Cream does just that.  It really gives the curl a more defined look overall.  You are left with a smooth defined curl and no frizz.  It doesn’t weigh down the hair either.  I apply a dime size drop in my hands, then while her hair is wet I apply it all over her hair with my hands.  Then I go back through and twist some of the curls.

UltraFlex Hairspray- This is a lighter hair spray overall.  It's alcohol free and quick drying.  It helps to refresh your style overall but doesn't leave it feeling sticky or heavy.  Easy to brush out and restyle if you want the next day.

SmartStart Leave-In Conditioner Spray- This really helps to hydrate extra dry strands, get tangles out of hair post showering, and protect hair before heat is used on the hair.  It does so much!

Check out the full box here!  Hurry, this box is SO good.  The box is valued at $142 but you can get it for $55.  Get it here before it sells out.

How To Hydrate Skin

How To Hydrate Skin

Anyone else wondering how to hydrate skin?  Winter is officially here! I've had so many questions on how to hydrate the skin lately that I thought I would do a dedicated post on the subject.  After all, as the seasons change, so should your skincare.  When it's cold and dry your skin needs different things then when it's hot and humid. So if your skin's been freaking out the past few weeks- keep reading!  It's time to address some of the common skin issues when winter strikes!

How To Hydrate Skin-

I list the products in order that they should be applied to the skin.  If you want a more in depth read on what products do for the skin, and when to apply them head to my How To Create A Natural Skincare Routine Post here!

It's no secret that the air becomes drier when winter comes and you can wonder how to hydrate skin properly when it comes to a cleanser.  The air no longer holds as much moisture like it does in the warm months.  When the air is drier, skin also can get drier.  Unfortunately, this can lead to skin cracking, redness and an overall heightened sense of sensitivity.  When your skin loses it's moisture barrier, it can easily get infamed. Not a recipe for skin success!

How to combat moisture loss?

I'm going to get to creams and oils, but it's also important to really think about what you're using to cleanse your skin.  Are you cleansing your skin with a harsh cleanser that is going to strip your skin and leave it feeling drier? Swap out your spring or summer cleanser for a oil based or cream cleanser.  This will nourish your skin from the very beginning of your routine, keeping your skin balanced from the start.

Some of my favorite cleansers for dry skin!

Here are some of my favorite natural winter skincare cleansers-

  • Beautycounter Cleansing Balm- If you're not familiar with a cleansing balm allow me to explain.  A cleansing balm feels just like the name suggests- a balm.  It's thick and you only need a small amount applied to dry skin to get all the makeup, and grime off from the day.  Once you're done rubbing in circular motions with it, then you take a warm washcloth and use it to remove it all.  The beauty of a cleansing balm is your skin doesn't feel dried out at all afterwards.  It feels balanced, and so hydrated!  Grab it here!
  • OSEA Ocean Cleanser- This is one of my favorite cleansers in clean beauty.  It isn't drying but not overly hydrating either.  A good balance for sure.  If you tend to have oily skin, or live in a pretty mild climate during the winter this would be a great cleanser.  I first get my skin damp, then apply this cleanser all over my skin. Grab it here!
  • Mahalo Unveil Cleanser- This is another cleanser that is similar to a cleansing balm.  However, I do get my skin damp first before applying this.  It emulsifies a little(gets sudsy) when you apply to skin with water.  It feels so good on the skin!! It removes all the makeup, and grime easily too. My skin feels balanced and nourished.  Grab it here!
  • Christina Moss Organic Facial Wash- This facial wash is both affordable and effective!  It is great for the most sensitive skin types.  It doesn't leave your skin dry and yet removes your makeup and grime.  I apply to wet skin and rub in circular motions and then rinse off. Grab it here!
  • Beautycounter Countertime Cleansing Oil-  This cleanser feels amazing!  It's my favorite everyday cleanser.  I've gone through several bottles and keep going back for more.  It is an oil but when you apply just the tiniest amount of water after rubbing all over the skin it emulsifies and you get the creamy/milky consistency.  It removes all my makeup effortlessly.  Can't recommend it enough!  Get it here!
  • Beautycounter Counterstart Cococream Cleanser- This cleanser is both affordable, and effective!  You can't beat the price of $20.  It is a creamy cleanser, so it feels more like a light lotion on the skin.  I love how it removed all my makeup and doesn't leave my skin feeling stripped.  Get it here!

So now that you know what cleansers to use when it comes to how to hydrate skin, let's talk about exfoliants.

The best natural exfoliants for dry skin.

How to hydrate skin while using an exfoliant?  I know people often wonder if it's possible since skin during the winter months skin is more sensitive and vulnerable.  My rule of thumb is it's best to steer clear of the manual exfoliants if you have really sensitive skin.  Some people might do fine with them depending on their skin type but overall physical exfoliants can be too harsh.

It's best to stick with chemical or enzyme exfoliants.  Enzyme exfoliants are similar to chemical exfoliation but much gentler.  It breaks down the glue that holds together dead skin.  They use active ingredients like papain, papaya and pineapple to slough off the dead skin. Enzyme exfoliation is great for someone with sensitive skin.  There’s no actual manual exfoliant involved.  Another type is chemical exfoliation.  Chemical exfoliation is stronger than enzyme exfoliation.  It uses Alpha Hydroxy Acids(AHA’s) or Beta Hydroxy Acids(BHA’s).  AHA’s are not as strong as BHA’s.  A lot of peels are considered chemical exfoliants.  Chemical exfoliants are great for those with oily skin and acne.

Here are some of my favorite natural winter skincare exfoliants-

  • Leahlani Honey Love- This is a gentle exfoliant using enzymes to help slough off dead skin cells.  It is healing, brightening and exfoliating all at the same time.  Especially great for those with combination or acne prone skin.  I apply this to damp clean skin and rub in circular motions.  Then I let it sit on my skin for 3-5 minutes. Grab it here!
  • Laurel Honey Berry Enzyme Mask- This is also an enzyme exfoliator that gently lifts away dead skin.  It smells so good!  A mixture of honey, berries and grapefruit.  I apply this to damp skin, rub in circular motions and then let it sit on skin for 5-30 minutes.  Grab it here!
  • Pai Kukui & Jojoba Bead Skin Brightening Exfoliator- I discovered this exfoliator last year and since have been using it.  It really helps to brighten skin gently using jojoba beads. The jojoba beads aren't harsh but gentle.  They glide over the skin easily, not disrupting skin's natural moisture balance.  I apply this to clean damp skin and rub in circular motions.  Especially great for sensitive skin types. Grab it here!
  • Ursa Major Bright and Easy 3-Minute Flash Mask- This mask gets you glowing in 3 minutes flat- just like the name suggests.  It’s perfect for the most sensitive skin types.  Worried your skin might react to a harsh exfoliant?  This may be the one for you.  Using enzymes to dissolve dead skin cells, this mask does it all in 3 minutes!  It looks like a gel and feels light and refreshing on the skin.  If you’re perpetually running late, this may be the mask for you!  I put it on before I brush my teeth and rinse off once I’m done.  The perfect amount of time to get a quick glow for the rest of the day. Grab it here!
  • Odacite Bioactive Rose Gommage- This is a newer discovery of mine and I'm loving it!  Gommage is a french term that means professional-type exfoliation method.  It helps to resurface your skin gently.  Although it helps to resurface the skin it does it gently.  Your skin feels smooth and not over exfoliated.  You can either use this as a Gommage and peel it off your skin after it has set for a few minutes or a  mask.  You can even use it under the eyes as an eye mask!  Get it here!

Ok, now that we've got cleansers and exfoliants down, let's talk about oils and creams.

The best natural skincare oils for dry skin.

Facial Oils

Oils are definitely the rage, but for good reason!  An oil consists of essential fatty acids that help to bring moisture to the skin. They also help to repair the outer layer of the skin so you don't lose more moisture.  Our bodies don’t produce EFA’s on their own so we need to supplement them internally and externally.  I like taking a fish oil daily for some good omega 3’s.  Oils also can contain a mix of essential oils that help to balance the skin and provide therapeutic properties.  Oil’s work perfectly with our skin’s cutaneous and get to the center of the epidermis.  Many people with oily skin think they should avoid oils- when really the opposite is true.  Using oils helps bring balance to the skin and doesn’t clog pores(if you choose the right ones) like other moisturizers that contain emulsifiers, waxes, etc.  Having an oil in your skincare arsenal is a good idea when it comes to how to hydrate skin in the winter.

Here are some of my favorite natural winter skincare oils-

  • Supercritical Pure Chia Oil- (dry skin, sensitive) This oil is made for even the driest skin types.  Literally hydrating the most parched skin.  It also has ingredients that plump up the skin and minimize fine lines.  This is an all around super hydrator.  I use it in the morning before my makeup or after a serum at night when I need some extra moisture.  Your skin will feel like silk!  Get one for yourself here!
  • Osmia Organic's Nectar Vital Rose Drops-The name is so appropriate for it, it truly feels like nectar on your skin, a rich luxe oil.  Some oils feel thinner but this one feels fatty-haha are you still with me?!  Let’s just say I love the feel of it.  And the smell, amazing!  Subtle rose, sandalwood and jasmine envelope you.  I applied this at night and in the morning.  At night I applied it after the toner and my skin just drank it up.  In the morning my skin felt silky smooth and hydrated.  It was as if it had a big drink of water at night and was infused with oxygen.  Seriously, it’s SO good!  You only need a few drops too.  Having dry skin once the weather starts to turn I like adding a heavier moisturizer/oil in the morning.  This was just the ticket.  I allowed my skin to soak it up for 5 minutes before applying my makeup.  You guys will love this, trust me!  With only 8 ingredients, this 99.6% organic nectar is seriously so lovely. Grab it here!
  • Holi(oil) Youth Serum- This frosted bottle contains a rich oil that smells like roses.  Not only does it help smooth skin and wrinkles but it also is extremely hydrating.  It doesn’t feel greasy at all and seeps into your skin, giving your face a radiance.  My skin looked restored.  I used this after several sleepless nights and it literally brought the life back into my skin.  It’s true to it’s name- giving you your youthful skin back!  There isn’t a long list of ingredients but the ones that are in there are effective.  I also love using this before makeup.  My foundation glides on.  Bonus- my husband can use it too!  This has barely any ingredients and scores a 2 when it comes to comedogenic rating. Which means it’s most likely not to cause clogged pores in people, however it could still in some. Grab your bottle here!
  • Indie Lee Squalane Oil- Helps with texture and appearance of skin tone.  It nourishes the skin without feeling greasy.  Has a comedogenic rating of 0-1, which means it's great for acne skin. I love how simplistic this oil is.  It literally only contains squalene oil- that's it!  Great for sensitive skin and for improving the overall quality of the skin's appearance.  Grab it here!
  • Pai Rosehip Seed Oil- This oil has a rating of 1 on the comedogenic scale. Rosehip seed oil is great for so many things, from hydrating skin to calming inflammation.  I love that this oil only has 3 ingredients.  It's really known for it's healing properties and it's rich Omega 3, 6, 7 & 9 plus antioxidant Carotenoids content.  Great for sensitive skin that is dry and inflamed. This is also budget friendly oil! Grab it here!
  • Marie Veronique Soothing B3 Serum- This serum is good all seasons but especially in the dead of winter when skin can get irritated and extra sensitive from the elements.  It helps to calm the skin with essential B Vitamins.  It also helps to calm sensitivity and redness and reduce acne.  It doesn't have any essential oils in it either!  Regular use of Niacinamide has shown to help ease inflammation and overall acne.  This isn't hydrating on it's own, it's a gel consistency.  I would apply this before an oil.  Make sure if you do struggle with acne, that you're not getting a comedogenic oil.  The Indie Lee Squalene Oil and the Pai Rosehip Seed Oil would be good oils to start with above. Grab it here!

Now that you know what oil to choose, let's dive into creams.

These natural skincare creams have stolen the show when it comes to an effective moisturizer for dry skin!

Many people aren’t sure what the difference is between an oil, a cream and a lotion.  Allow me to explain.  An oil is just that- just an oil- nothing added.  A cream has a mix of water and oil, but more oil than water and then a lotion is also a mixture of water and oil but the higher percentage is water- which makes it thinner.  Creams are great at protecting the skin, especially after applying an oil and if you need additional moisture.  I like doing them at night.  A lotion is good for in the morning when you want some hydration but don’t want to be too greasy from an oil.

We are going to focus on creams and their benefits.  They really are the superstar when it comes to how to hydrate skin in the winter months.  They really help to protect skin and hold in the moisture.

Here are some of my favorite natural winter skincare creams-

  • Joshrosebrook Vital Balm Cream-  It is a cream but also feels similar to a balm because of it's thicker texture- thus the name Vital Balm Cream(more on balms below). It feels creamy to the touch-not greasy and when I apply it my skin’s dryness dissipates and I’m left with plump hydrated skin.  Ok, the smell…well it’s amazing! One of the best smelling products I’ve ever used.  It has a fresh, light smell with vanilla enveloping all of it and blue tansy and ylang ylang notes throughout-I’m obsessed with the smell.  It has the properties of a balm but feels like a cream-I mean it’s kind a dream cream!  Can we talk about the color too?!  The baby mint/blue hue just looks cool. The ingredient I was excited to learn about in the product is Indian Senna Seed.  It really performs just like it supposed to in this cream.  It’s been called the botanical hyaluronic acid, it gives skin the ability to retain moisture on it’s own.  So your skin feels hydrated well after application.  Grab it here!
  • Jane Scrivener OO Cream- This cream has a bright golden orange hue from rosehip.  I was so excited to see how this would stack up to other moisturizers.  Well, I was impressed- very impressed.  I’ve now been using this every night since I got it in the mail and can’t stop!  It’s SO hydrating.  Some creams leave your skin hydrated for a minute but this one lasts.  It really sinks into the skin so nicely.  I wake up in the morning and my skin still feels supple and moisturized, but not oily- I repeat not oily.  Can I talk to you about the scent?  I love the scent.  It smells like vanilla- soothing and warm vanilla. It’s really an amazing product!  If you’ve been looking for a cream to truly hydrate your skin in this winter season or any time- this is it.  I can’t stop and won’t stop using it! Grab it here!
  • Beautycounter Countertime Tetrapeptide Supreme Cream- This cream is what skincare dreams are made of- no joke!  Yes, it is the best anti-aging cream I’ve found in natural skincare.  Move over LaMer.  There’s a new skin cream in town and it doesn’t contain the toxic ingredients!  I have tried hundreds of natural skin creams in my day, yes as a clean beauty blogger my shelves are filled with product, after product.  This one is in a league of it’s own.  I just dare you to try it and tell me otherwise.  The consistency is like softest most decadent cream.  It literally melts into the skin and creates skin that feels so completely perfect from hydration to overall smoothness and radiance.  My skin LOVES it.Not only does it contain the plant-derived retinol bakuchiol and alpine rose but also a tetrapeptide.  Meaning it has four amino acids.  Your skin will be repaired, protected and stimulated with increased collagen, all while being completely hydrated.  Sound like something amazing?  It’s because it is.  This has been one of those products I recommend to clients when they tell me they have very dry skin and nothing seems to hydrate.  They get this and they're hooked!  Plus, it's the only cream that really fights the aging process with antioxidants, peptides and plant-derived retinols.  Get it here!
  • Ursa Major Golden Hour Recovery Cream- I recently discovered this cream a couple months ago and have been loving it. This has been the perfect moisturizer to add on top of my oils in the morning and at night for a little extra hydration.  I even used this when we were up in the mountains sledding for the day and it kept my skin feeling so hydrated and protected.  Not only does this cream moisturize but also provide great anti-aging benefits with it’s naturally rich antioxidants.  It seeps into my skin so well, and doesn’t feel greasy.  My hubs has been stealing this from me too-that means it’s good people!  He can be pickier than me at times.  What’s even better is the price tag on this cream, $48!  A steal for a green beauty cream that works and is full of skincare actives! Check it out here!

Skincare balms are often the unsung heroes of dry skin.

So first what are skincare balms and why might you need one?? Good question.  These play a vital role when it comes to how to hydrate skin in the winter months.  Balms are made generally from oils, butters, and waxes. In my opinion a true balm is waterless. The product is more concentrated when there’s not water and so pure. Balms are multitaskers. They seriously can do it all. From cleanse, hydrate, protect and even offer some serious nutrients. Since balms typically involve a lot of oils, they are using soluble ingredients. Which in the end let’s you put more ingredients into one product. Hello effectiveness! Plus, since they’re waterless usually formulas can include ingredients that are more potent. Balms are especially great in the winter when your skin needs extra protection.  They can help to protect skin from the harsh winds, cold and lock in the moisture.  I apply balms after oils or creams.

Here are some of my favorite natural winter skincare balms

  • Leahlani Bless Beauty Balm-

Dry skin stands no chance with this baby!  This is a balm and not a cream but performs like a cream in many ways. It’s full of organic shea and cocoa butters, as well as cold pressed oils.  It melts right into your skin and leaves behind a beautiful smell of rosehip oil and no oily residue.  My skin felt so hydrated!  The perfect companion for dry weather in winter, and in the summer when you’ve spent too much time in the sun.  You only need a little dab for the whole face. Grab it here!

  • CVS Restorative Skin Balm- This is such a great protective skin balm.  If your skin is cracked, dry and needing protection from the elements, this is your balm.  It is similar to a conventional petroleum jelly product, think Aquaphor.  It will soften skin, while hydrating at the same time. I even have used this on cuticles, elbows, or anywhere you experience cracked, dry skin. Grab it here!
  • Laurel Night Balm- A waterless, luxe balm filled with phytonutrients.  It hydrates the skin, while at the same time delivering nutrients. It helps to strengthen and build connective tissue. It helps to brighten and even skin tone overall.  You wake up with skin that feels balanced, refreshed and restored.  Get it here!
  • Live Botanical Sanctuary Barrier Balm– This balm is one of my newest balm finds this year and it is so good!  I can't stop using it.  First, I love that it is essential oil free.  Making it great for even the most sensitive skin types. What makes this different then other balms is the phospholipids.  The molecules attract and hold onto the water and mimic how are skin structure is. The balm also helps other skincare products such as serums or active ingredients be absorbed.  Get it here!

Also, besides skincare products there are a few other things to do on how to hydrate skin in the winter months:

  • Avoid long hot showers that can dry out your skin.
  • Use lukewarm water when your cleansing your skin.
  • Apply moisturizer when skin is still slightly damp to lock in moisture.
  • Stay hydrated- make sure you're drinking your water.
  • Eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, nuts, seeds or take an omega-3 supplement.
  • Avoid clothing that can irritate your skin like wool.

See any products you need to get?  What helps keep your skin hydrated and balanced during the winter months?

Kosas lipsticks are hands down some of the best pigment and colors in clean beauty!

Giveaway Day #13 – Kosas is giving one lucky winner a $500 gift card!

Kosas offers some of the best natural beauty makeup products.  From their tinted face oil, to their lipsticks- you can’t go wrong with a Kosas product.  The pigments are rich and colors are beautiful!  They remind me of my conventional favorite MAC products.  From the packaging to formulas. You can be entered to win a $500 gift card to pick out your own Kosas loot!

Check out some of my favorite Kosas products:

  • Kosas Tinted Face Oil- a hydrating spin on foundation that feels light and leaves you glowing. I thought I wouldn’t like it originally but after using it I realized how wrong I was.  The formula is a lot thinner than I expected.  It reminds me of Gressa’s foundation consistency.  I always say Gressa’s foundation reminds me of paint thinner.  Haha, I know a crazy example.  The Kosas Tinted Face Oil offers such good coverage, a lot better than I thought.  It gives my face an overall polished and pulled together look.  Plus, it looks so dewy and fresh.  My skin literally looks like it’s glowing! Especially great for skin in the winter as it gets colder.
  • Lipsticks- They’re definitely a go to of mine in clean beauty.  Their formula is unlike any other.  Not too hydrating where they bleed, but moisturizing enough. I feel like as the season changes to cooler temperatures and fall leaves come- it always calls for richer pigments. A lipstick does just that.  One of my faves is Kosas Lipsticks.  I may have every color!  If you follow me then you know I love a good Kosas lipstick.  These lipsticks are highly pigmented, last and plump the lips all at the same time.  They come in so many great colors too.  Honestly, I haven’t found a color I didn’t love.  Some lipsticks feel too heavy, or not hydrating enough- Kosas really nailed the formula on this one.  Everything you want in a lipstick- but clean!  Often I don’t have time for a full makeup look but I have time for a swipe of lipstick- pulling my whole look together.
  • Revealer Concealer- I included this new concealer in my Best of Clean Beauty Concealer, but wanted to pay a little tribute to it here.  I have been loving the formula.  It’s a new release for them and really is unique compared to other brands I’ve used in the past.  It’s very brightening and really wakes up your whole complexion.  It also helps to hide dark circles.  Kosas calls it a lightbulb for your skin and I couldn’t agree more!  It instantly gives your skin a glow. I love that it has caffeine to help de-puff the under eye area and hyaluronic acid to add hydration.  The formula is so creamy too.  It provides medium to full coverage for a concealer.  I love this under my eyes.  If you’ve been looking for a new concealer, look no further!
  • The Sun Show Bronzer- This bronzer is unique because it’s made with shea butter and it’s silicone free.  It hydrates your skin and not only gives you a bronzed look but an overall glow.  It feels so lightweight on the skin- such a weightless formula.  I love how easy it is to apply- you really can’t mess up when applying.  It comes in 3 shades, Light, Medium and Dark.  I wear the Light and Medium most but I’ve even tried the Dark and loved how the color looked on my skin.  It almost has this creamy texture to it because of the shea butter.  If you’ve been looking for a new bronzer- allow me to introduce you to The Sun Show Bronzer!

I love that they list a clean list on their website and a complicated list. It really helps the consumer to instantly recognize what's safe and what's not when it comes to ingredients.  It also educates them on what to look for.  They also have an ingredient glossary that tells what a product's name is, what it's used in, what it's for and the skin benefits.  They leave no stone unturned when it comes to transparency and creating truly clean products that work!

The Organic Bath Co. hand soap leaves my hands feeling clean and hydrated!

Below our a list of some of my favorite products they offer:

  • Zesty Morning Organic Body Butter- I was introduced to this body butter a year ago and absolutely love it!  It instantly wakes me up in the morning with it's citrus scent but then completely nourishes my body with it's shea butter and jojoba oils.  I love that it comes in a glass container as well- double bonus!
  • Java Jolt- This is your morning cup of coffee but literally in the shower!  It smells SO good and gives you that feeling of being woken up in the shower- in the best possible way.  I love how it smells but also how it makes my skin feel so silky smooth and soft.  It will become your favorite morning ritual if you let it!
  • Zesty Morning Hand Soap- Their hand soap is a hidden gem!  I love how much you get for the price- such a steal and how moisturizing it is on my hands. It feels so nourishing and doesn't dry my hands out.  Plus, I love the scents!  Not too overwhelming but just enough.  The perfect combination.
  • Refreshmint Body Wash- Their body washes are so good!  My hubs loves the Refreshmint scent and that it comes in a pump.  So easy to use.  It really wakes you up in the morning and gets you smelling so fresh.
  • Bar Soaps- I love that Organic Bath Co. offers a bar soap. They are so fun to gift to people and I love taking bar soaps on trips.  Such an easy way to travel.
  • Moroccan Rose Sanitizer- This is such a great addition to my purse, especially in the season we are living in.  It smells good and doesn't have any of the harmful chemicals you might find in traditional hand sanitizer.

All the scents from Organic Bath Co. are subtle but refreshing!

Aillea carries so many faves in clean beauty!

Giveaway Day #11 – Aillea Gift Card (value $500)!!

Aillea is your one stop shop when it comes to natural beauty.  They have everything! Top name brands in clean beauty. I love being able to get my fave deodorant and also my favorite foundation and lipstick all in the same place.   And they are giving away a $500 shopping spree today!

Beuti is one of the many brands I discovered at Aillea!

Read below for just a few of my favorites that Aillea offers-

  • Aila Nail Polish This is my favorite natural nail polish that's not a gel. It’s clean and they have it in so many colors.  They even have a top coat that rates a 1 on EWG called Better Than Gel.  Check out the colors Bodega, Room 212 and Namaste, some of my faves!
  • IliaI love Ilia’s makeup! From their highlighters to their foundation, lip conditioners.  There really isn’t a bad product.  They’re natural but perform like conventional beauty products.
  • Agent NateurThis is one of my favorite natural deodorants. Specifically their Holi Rose.  It performs so well and leaves me smelling fresh!
  • Kosas Lipsticks  If you follow me then you know I love a good Kosas lipstick.
  • Maya Chia Highlight of the Day These liquid highlighters are the best.  I love applying them and then adding a powdered highlighter on top.
  • Suntegrity 5 in 1 Natural Moisturizing Sunscreen- This BB cream is so good!  It definitely hits all the marks for a great tinted sunscreen.  From superb coverage, hydration and good tint.  Plus, it offers a broad spectrum spf of 30.  It’s made with non-nano zinc oxide.  It also comes in four colors which makes it easy to find one that matches your skin tone.  Trust me, you’ll love it!
  • Beuti Pomegranate Glow Cleanser- Wow, Aillea sent me this cleanser and let’s just say I was so impressed after the first use.  This is what I expect from my cleanser.  I want it to remove all my makeup and not leave any residue- this includes mascara.  I want to be able to just rinse it off with water and not have to use a washcloth.  Now most oil cleansers you need a washcloth and I’m not saying I don’t love oil cleansers but overall I prefer a cleanser that doesn’t require an extra step like using a washcloth in this season of my life(hello baby, a 3 year old and a 5 year old).  So you can imagine my delight when I used this cleanser for the first time and it removed all my makeup- yes even the stubborn mascara and rinsed off with water.  Plus, my skin still felt hydrated and had a subtle glow to it.  The only other cleanser that really hits all the marks for me is Beautycounter’s Countertime Cleansing Oil.  It does all of the things I mentioned above as well.  So if you’re needing a good cleanser- look no further!
  • Alpyn Beauty Melt Moisturizer- Another product I received from Aillea and can’t stop using!  It has the perfect weight for a moisturizer.  Not too heavy, but moisturizing enough so your skin doesn’t feel dry.  I’ve been applying this at night over my serum and oil for an extra boost of hydration.  My skin feels supple and moist.  I’ve also used it for a day moisturizer and love how my skin feels.  My makeup goes on easily but doesn’t feel cakey.  I love that it not only has ceramides but also squalene, Vitamin C and even some plant-derived retinol.  If you’re not familiar with ceramides allow me to explain.  They are lipids that help form the skin barrier, while helping the skin keep hydration and moisture.  You want ceramides in your skincare. It’s basically a nutrient dense moisturizer that not only offers the perfect amount of hydration but also feeds your skin at the same time.  My skin looks brighter after using.  After I had been using it for a while I started to read more about it and wasn’t shocked when I saw it was given 5 stars from everyone!  This is a moisturizer everyone could use.
