This was NOT an easy choice. But, I chose Tower 28 as the best tinted moisturizer with SPF for multiple reasons. First, I love when I can find clean beauty at mainstream retailers. And you can find Tower 28 at Sephora. It’s also budget friendly coming in at $32. Finally, it checked all the marks for moisturizing, coverage and sun protection. A total winner! I will say that the Saie Beauty Slip Tint came in at a VERY close second. It is a little more expensive (just slightly) but such a good product too!

What Is Tinted Moisturizer?

Tinted moisturizers are a moisturizer infused with a bit of foundation. They are a minimalist’s dream with the benefits of a moisturizer and light foundation coverage. Tinted moisturizers can be used as a standalone product or as a base to layer on more foundation.

What Is The Difference Between BB Cream And Tinted Moisturizer?

Sometimes a visual is helpful in understanding the difference (similarities) of two items. Here are the differences between a BB cream and a tinted moisturizer:

Ingredients To Avoid In Tinted Moisturizers

The main purpose of a moisturizer is to keep your face hydrated and supple, however, they can also cause skin irritation and clog pores.

A few of the ingredients that we want to limit or avoid altogether are:

  • Parabens – can disrupt hormone production
  • Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) – can be carcinogenic, allergenic, and an endocrine disruptor
  • Dimethicone – can irritate skin and disrupt healthy skin function
  • Fragrance – can denote an undisclosed combination of chemical ingredients, including hormone disruptors and allergens
  • Alcohol – can cause skin to compensate with an overproduction of oil
  • Petroleum – can block pores

If your tinted moisturizer has SPF, you’ll want to make sure to avoid the following chemical sunscreen ingredients:

  • oxybenzone
  • avobenzone
  • octisalate
  • octocrylene
  • homosalate
  • octinoxate

Chemical sunscreens absorb the sun’s rays through chemical UV filters, however these chemicals absorb into the skin as well. (source)

The concern around chemical sunscreens is their ability to disrupt certain endocrine functions (aka hormone disruptors). (source)

Because of their toxic effect on marine ecosystems, Hawaii and Key West have banned oxybenzone and octinoxate. If concern has been raised around marine life, I think we as humans should probably avoid these chemicals too.  (source)

Chemical sunscreens can also exacerbate rosacea or melasma, promote skin irritation like redness and inflammation, not to say anything of the free radicals being released that can cause skin damage.

What Is SPF And Why Do I Need It In My Moisturizer?

SPF stands for sun protection factor and indicates the amount of time the sunscreen will protect you from the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

Since a moisturizer is usually a part of a daily skincare routine, using a moisturizer that has SPF is a guarantee that you’ll get some protection throughout the day.

This list was so helpful in my search for clean, non-toxic tinted moisturizers! I like how you mentioned which skin types may or not benefit from some of the tinted moisturizers. I have oily skin so that helps so much!
