The Best Nontoxic Cookware

The Best Nontoxic Cookware

I finally rounded out the best nontoxic cookware!  I have received this question so much within the last 6 months that I knew I needed to write a blog post.  It’s crazy how many toxic chemicals can be lurking in cookware.  It might not seem like a big deal but over time these chemicals add up and produce a toxic load!

So What’s In The Average Pot or Pan?

I’m sure you’ve either used nonstick pots or pans or heard of them.  These pans may make it easy to cook your food with but unfortunately they carry dangerous toxic exposure as well!  Nontoxic cookware usually contains this chemical called perfluorooctanoic acid or PFOA.  Science has shown that it can stay in human bodies for long periods of time.   It has even shown to cause cancer in lab studies done on animals.

While cancer is nothing to bat an eye at, it also can cause infertility, liver damage, plus delayed development just to name a few other things.  Of course PFOA isn’t the only ingredient you want to avoid in your cookware.  Things like aluminum, plastic, lead, teflon, and cadmium.  These all pose a serious risk to our health and should be avoided.

When living out a natural lifestyle one of the foundations is cooking your food.  It’s no secret that when you cook your own food, you’re getting more nourishment usually then when going out.  However, if the cookware we constantly use is leaching out harmful toxins we may be doing ourselves a disservice.  As I mentioned earlier it’s the toxic load over time that really adds up.  These chemicals are literally getting into the food we’re eating and then absorbed by our bodies.

So What Is Safe?

There are some great options out there now when it comes to nontoxic cookware!  I will say some of the cookware definitely are a little pricier than non-stick- however the investment is worth it.  These pots and pans are going to last you a lot longer than many conventional pots and pans and won’t carry the toxic burden.

Cast Iron-

This was the first type of nontoxic cookware that I switched over too and I still love it.  It really has been around forever and that’s one of the reasons I love it.  It does take a little bit of time to get used to it but once you’ve worked with it you figure it out.  I really love the Lodge cast iron pans.  They’re easy to find at Target or you can order them on Amazon.  They’re also budget friendly!  I use this pan for cooking eggs,  meats, frying- really the list is endless. A couple tips when using cast iron.  Make sure and slowly add heat.  I found this works best instead of blasting the food with heat.  It helps to not burn food.  Cast iron retains heat very well.  Also, make sure you season it regularly. This helps to create a type of natural nonstick surface.  If you’re unsure how to season it, The Wellness Mama did a whole blog post on it here.  When you season a cast iron it’s basically adding a good oil to keep it hydrated and then baking it.  I avoid cooking acidic foods in cast iron because it can break down the seasoning or patina that’s been made on the cast iron.  Cleaning cast iron can seem intimidating at first, but it’s actually not.  You don’t want to use soap with cast iron- it can damage the seasoning and dry it out.  Instead, use some salt to clean it.  I just shake salt on top and then take a scrubby and scrub away.  Then rinse with water. Then you want to dry it and rub in a cooking oil. *The one caution I would make is that cast iron has been known to leach iron so if for some reason you have an abundance of iron you might want to switch up your pans every now and then.  I’ve been the opposite more anemic so I welcome all the iron I can get! Check out Lodge Cast Iron here!

Stainless Steel-

This is another option.  It is unique because it comes in many varieties and types.  In other words not all stainless steel is created equal. Stainless steel is made up of a combination of metals.  Some of the most common metals are chromium and nickel.  The chromium is what helps to protect against rusting and is nontoxic for the most part in the body.  Our bodies do need chromium in small amounts but it’s not that much and if you eat a fairly healthy diet you may already be getting more than you need.  Nickel on the other hand is used to give stainless steel that extra hardness and to give it that polished look.  However, it isn’t great for our bodies.  There is virtually no reason for us to consume nickel.  Your best bet is to buy food grade stainless steel.  When shopping you will see numbers like 200, 304, 316 and 430.  These numbers represent the series of stainless steel.  For example, a 300 series may corrode easier then a 400 series. Whereas a 400 series is going to be the strongest and have almost no nickel.  Of course the 400 series will cost more!  I wouldn’t buy anything less than a 304 for overall quality. You will also see numbers 18/8, 18/10 or 18/0. The first number represents the amount of chromium and the second number the amount of nickel.  It’s also important to not use harsh cleaners when cleaning stainless steel because it can cause damage to the lining. When the lining is damaged the heavy metals can leach into the food a lot easier.  Personally, although this option is safer than many I still prefer not to cook with it all the time because of the possible metal content leaching into food, especially if the food your cooking is acidic. Also, many stainless steel cookware has a layer of aluminum in between the stainless steel.  So it’s important to note that if your stainless steel was to get scratched you need to stop using it. You may also see copper sandwiched in the in-between layer as well.  They do this because both aluminum and copper are heat conductors.  From what I’ve read and researched since the aluminum isn’t coming into contact with the food and is protected by stainless steel it’s fine to have it in the cookware. *Some people already have high levels of heavy metals in their bodies and cooking with stainless steel wouldn’t be a good idea.  However, many people might be fine.  I know a lot of people who use it only for certain things and then other foods that might be more acidic they use different cookware.  One more important tidbit is that commercial kombucha is brewed in large stainless steel vats and since kombucha is acidic it is soaking up all those heavy metals. Even though it’s housed in glass it’s best to steer clear of  store bought kombucha and make your own at home. Check out this great set of stainless steel cookware here!

This has been my newest cookware option that I’ve started to use for the last several months and really have come to love!  It is different than both stainless steel and cast iron.  From the glaze on the cookware to the core it’s made with 100% ceramic.  Ceramic is awesome because it’s completely inert- meaning it won’t leach any harmful toxins.  All of Xtrema has been tested for heavy metal content and is free from glues, polymers, coatings and dyes. If you want to see their testing results check them out here.  Plus, it’s dish washer safe- something all the mamas can get behind! It heats very evenly too.  You can even take a dish from the fridge to the stove or oven- it’s very versatile. It also can withstand high temperatures.  It’s easy to clean Xtrema cookware too, just use warm soapy water.  You can also use baking soda or an abrasive scrubby if you need to.  The best way to heat an Xtrema is to turn the heat on low or low medium.  Since it’s so great at heat conduction you don’t need or want to crank the heat up to high.  Doing this would result in foods sticking or burning.  It’s best to turn the heat on a couple minutes before you start cooking and then add a little cooking oil once it’s heated.  I like avocado oil, ghee or coconut oil.  Don’t add the oil to a cold pan, wait until it’s heated up or it will cause foods to stick.  Personally, I love cooking with Xtrema!  I have their 8-inch Versa Braiser.  It’s nice because it has a lid and can be used for cooking meats, quiches, casseroles etc, but also can be used for cooking eggs with.  *Beware, there is a lot of deceptive marketing around ceramic cookware.  It may say ceramic but it is coated with a nonstick chemical.  The only company I’m aware of that is a true ceramic, with no additives is Xtrema.  Xtrema

Porcelain Enamel-

There has been a lot of confusion I’ve noticed about this type of cookware.  It is cast iron but then has been given a coating of enamel.  This enamel is a type of glass.  It is completely safe.  There has been some controversy about the enamel being made of clay and therefore having lead but from various tests performed on it, there has been no lead detection reported.  A common brand you may think of is Le Creuset.  Their cookware is made in France.  One might think that porcelain enamel is similar to cast iron and that is true but it does have it’s differences.  Porcelain Enamel will not rust where regular cast iron can if not seasoned properly.  Also, porcelain enamel won’t leach iron because of the coating, where cast iron will.  Porcelain enameled is also nice to have for acidic foods like chili or spaghetti sauces.  Acidic foods as I mentioned above can strip cast iron of it’s seasoning, especially when simmered for a long period of time.  For cleaning you can use some mild dish soap on it and a scrub pad of some kind.  For stubborn stains or food that’s stuck you can boil some water in it with a few tablespoons of baking soda.  Let it sit for a few hours or overnight.  *Personally I love having a porcelain enamel skillet on hand too.  It’s great for using with acidic foods or making stir frys, soups, or stews.  I would stick with Le Creuset.  To my knowledge they are the only ones that have been tested for lead content and come back negative.  The only small trace amounts that were found were on the outside of the lids and pots where there was some color but not inside.  Also, I’m a skeptic of things made in China as they have been known to have higher metal content and most of the other porcelain enameled is made there. Check out Porcelain Enamel cookware here!

Glass Cookware-

This is a great budget friendly option that’s available almost anywhere cookware is sold.  One of the most common glass cookware is called Pyrex.  It is inert, meaning it doesn’t add or take away from the food.  I have several casserole or baking dishes whatever you like to call them.  I use them for both casseroles and special desserts.  I also have a round glass dish with a lid that’s great for soups or stews that I use a lot.  For making breads I like to use a glass bread loaf pan too.  *Glass is a great option for those starting to detox their cookware and looking for accessible and budget friendly options.  I have even seen really good deals on Pyrex glass sets at Costco! Check out this Pyrex set here!  Check out this great set by Anchor Hocking here!

When it comes to baking you can use a lot of the cookware I mentioned above but there are a few other options too.  For the ones mentioned above you can use cast iron to bake breads, or porcelain enamel for desserts such as crumbles, cobblers or pies.  Also, glass cookware is a great option for baking too, as well as stainless steel.  Stainless steel is especially nice for cookie sheets or cake pans! These are a great option for stainless steel cookie sheets! If you’re still concerned about the possible metal leakage just use some parchment paper.  I love this brand that doesn’t leach any toxic chemicals.  I use parchment paper when baking always because it makes clean up so much easier and is sometimes essential when making cakes.  You can also get stainless steel muffin trays.  Another option I haven’t talked about is stone cookware.  They have stone baking sheets, loaf pans and cake pans.  I personally haven’t used them.  I know that you have to be really careful when cleaning as you can’t use soap or get them wet.  They’re also heavier too. Rada is a good American made brand that is lead free.  *When it comes to bakeware think about what you use the most and swap that out first.  As I mentioned earlier, you can always buy some nontoxic parchment paper and use that as a protectant too.  I also like these nontoxic paper muffin liners.

I have never used silicone for cooking or baking other than some silicone muffin liners.  However, I stopped using them because I started to wonder if they were actually safe.  I had read a lot of information saying there just isn’t enough research out there yet and I agree.  Until more long term studies come out, I’m going to stick with using silicone when food isn’t heated or cooked.

I do think it’s important to switch out your cookware because this is something you use all the time and the accumulative affect is great.  Even if you could replace one item every quarter, by the end of the year you would have a whole new cookware set!

What nontoxic cookware option do you love?

December Beauty Heroes Discovery: Khus Khus+Kari Gran Holiday

December Beauty Heroes Discovery: Khus Khus+Kari Gran Holiday

This month the December Beauty Heroes Discovery: Khus Khus is in the house!  I was thrilled to see this brand in the box this month.  I’ve tried them before and couldn’t wait to sample more of their skin treats.  I also wanted to share about the Beauty Heroes Holiday Discovery- Kari Gran.  It just launched on Beauty Heroes website last Friday and it’s so good!  I’m sharing more details with you below.  If you aren’t familiar with Beauty Heroes, keep reading to see why I love it!

Beauty Heroes was founded by Jeannie Jarnot.  A longtime spa director herself and healthy beauty expert.  I had the pleasure of meeting Jeannie at IBE, and she is truly one of the sweetest people.  Beauty Heroes is a monthly beauty service that selects only the best clean beauty brands.  Each month you can find one to two full size truly heroic products in each box.  The products typically range from skincare to haircare products.  However, every 3 months Beauty Heroes offers a makeup box as well that’s optional for members or non-members.  I absolutely love their “Use Less, Love More” philosophy.  By only getting one or two products, you allow yourself to truly experience them.  Of course you can trust their picks, as they are strict on their integrity standards.  What’s not to love about this whole concept?  As a Beauty Heroes Ambassador, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to be part of such a movement.

Thoughts on Khus Khus Bleu Body Wax-

Can I be honest, I really thought I had tried all the body oils/lotions out there…then I tried this body wax by Khus+Khus and I was quickly mistaken.  This stuff is pure luxury.  First off it smells amazing.  I’m not into super fragrant products and this product is the perfect balance.  With ingredients of blue tansy, and blue yarrow this wax is perfect for helping with inflamed skin, as both are anti-inflammatory.  I received this at the best time.  I had just fallen on some ice and sprained my elbow.  The Blue Tansy is especially great for bringing relief to tired sore muscles, strains, etc.  I started to apply it daily, sometimes twice a day.  I would apply at night, because that is when it would start to ache, since I wasn’t moving it.  I can honestly say it felt looser and more limber while using it.  Also, if you have eczema or irritated skin, this is a great was to soothe your skin. A little goes a long way.  It instantly absorbs into your skin, no greasy feeling and leaves you hydrated the whole day.  I have to say the wax is really more of an experience from start to finish.  It awakens me in the morning and soothes me at night.  I can’t get enough!  Plus, can we talk about the luxe packaging?  It’s housed in a dark glass jar.

Thoughts on Khus Khus Sans Age-

This facial serum is so luxurious.  It smells amazing first off!  The rosehip and Chamomile in it are so fresh and vibrant.  I love the ingredients too. Simple, yet powerful. I really loved seeing Helichrysum oil in the serum.  It’s long been noted to have anti-inflammatory activity, as well as lymph drainage and detoxification properties.  Really just a home run when it comes to a facial oil ingredient!  The formula is slighty blue tinted from the blue tansy.  It absorbs quickly into the skin and leaves my skin feeling so balanced and hydrated.  Loved waking up to clear, even skin!  I’ve been using this on the daily and can’t get enough.  Very impressed with the results so far and exited to continue using it!

Kari Gran Holiday Discovery-

This is a special holiday box that will only be available while supplies last- so definitely get on it while there’s still some left!  It features Kari Gran’s newest product The Essential Balm and a tinted Lip Whip in either Jolene, Suji Red, or Jeannie.  The Essential Balm really keeps with Kari Gran’s mission and ethos to only use what you need and to keep things simple.  I love that about their brand.  This balm can be used for so many things.  From a facial moisturizer, to an eye balm, a cleansing balm and even a primer.  Really it’s what you make of it and what works for you.  It has incredible texture and feel.  A little more slip than a traditional balm and almost melts into your hand when applying it.  I can’t wait to take this on my next trip!  It really would be all you need.  Did I mention the color?  A bright yellow and the smell- I get notes of calendula and jasmine.  I’m totally into this new product and can’t wait to keep finding new ways to use it!

You all know I’m a huge fan of Kari Gran Lip Whips!  I can’t get enough.  These little jars of goodness are seriously so decadent.  One of the few things that really keep my lips moisturized.  So really getting a tinted Lip Whip is the best of both worlds!  You not only get hydrated lips but some serious moisture-sign me up!  I received the color Jolene- a berry hued lip that makes a statement.  I can’t get enough!  Such a perfect color for the holidays!  Grab your Kari Gran Holiday Discovery here!

3 Steps to the Best Skincare Routine

3 Steps to the Best Skincare Routine

So excited to share with you my 3 Steps to the Best Skincare Routine.  I find people often aren’t sure what a beauty routine is or where to even start.  Or perhaps they think they have a routine, yet instead it looks a little more chaotic.  In this post, I want to help you create a beauty routine that you not only love but that works for you.  I will also be sharing some of my staples in my beauty routine and how they create the base of it.  If it’s one thing I’ve learned since being in the beauty industry for over 14 years it’s that a beauty routine should not be ignored.

For this post I’ve partnered up with Beauty Heroes to showcase my faves and highlight why they make the staple list.  If you’ve followed me long enough, then you’re no stranger to Beauty Heroes.  If you are new, you can read up on this amazing company here.

Step 1- Identify What You Need

I love Beauty Heroes philosophy, “Use less and love more”. Beauty Heroes is so much more than just a green beauty subscription box.  They really raise the bar when it comes to challenging the status beauty quo of always needing more.  This phrase and mantra resounds in my head now more than ever!  In essence, the goal is to find the products that speak to you, work with you and that you love.  The end result is creating a beauty routine that is not only functional but one you enjoy.

For example, some people aren’t into having 7 skincare products.  They just want 3 that really work.  On the other hand, some love their skincare routine and couldn’t go without one of their beloved products.  The point?  Do you!  Create a beauty routine that feels right for you, not someone else.  After all, I truly believe that’s what holds up many people in having a routine at all.  They feel overwhelmed and don’t know where to start.  Know what you need, find it and use it.  Your body will thank you and so will your subconscious as you take a little time each day just for you.

Step 2- Find Your Favorites & Staples

If you’re wondering how to find those products think about what you always use everyday or what you find you want to use but might not have.  Maybe you have curly hair and a curl cream is a must, or maybe you have really dry skin and to not have a moisturizer would be the end of the world for you.  Find what you need and works for you.

That’s one of the reasons I love Beauty Heroes subscription box.  They deliver full size luxury green beauty products each month that work!  Often you can get a subscription box and it only gives you a trial size of many products.  You end up barely scratching the surface of what the product can even do.  In the end you end up feeling a little more overwhelmed and back at the same spot of trying to find quality products.  Enter Beauty Heroes!  Not only do you get an amazing box each month with their subscription service but they also have a carefully curated section of green beauty products in their online store.  You may be searching for a curl cream but haven’t received one in your subscription box yet.  No worries!  The great thing about Beauty Heroes is they’ve vetted the products in their store.  You simply can go there and search under hair and have their top picks.  It really doesn’t get any easier!

Another tip is to ask bloggers, search online for best natural curl cream or find natural hair companies and ask them about a curl cream.  You will end up finding the best natural curl cream out there and your hair will thank you!

Step 3- Commit To Your Routine

Once you know what you need and find the products you love, then it’s time to commit to your routine.  Often people complain about beauty results because they aren’t consistent with their routine.  The point of finding products you need and love is your more likely to stick with them, because you love using them and they make you feel good.  I like to have a morning routine and a night routine

Morning Routine-

My morning routine is all about awakening and prepping.  I love using a mask/cleanser as a morning ritual to awaken my skin and brighten it.  This gives my skin a glow but also mentally wakes me up.  I also like to prep it with a toning mist after to again awaken my senses and perk up my skin.  Then I apply an oil or serum for hydration.  This helps create balance and prep my skin before foundation.  My final step is to apply sunscreen to protect my skin throughout the day.  (As a mom some days I’m just at home and I may skip this step).

*My morning routine also includes exfoliating 2 times a week.

Night Routine-

My night time routine is all about restoring and relaxing.  At night I really like to take more time and savor my beauty routine.  It may sound funny but for me taking 10 minutes for myself at night really helps me mentally process the day and relaxes me.  Especially as a mom it’s easy to go throughout the day not really doing anything for yourself. This little act really creates a space to ease my mind.  I find myself looking forward to it every night.  Restoring my skin is an important part of my night routine.  After being in the elements during the day I like to give it the nutrients it needs to help restore it.  I love oil cleansing first to remove makeup and impurities.  Then toning with a mist for extra hydration.  Next, I apply an active serum.  This really does the main work at repairing and treating the skin.  Finally, I apply an oil to help retain moisture.

*My night time routine includes masking 2-3 times a week as well.

 Skincare Staples-

Ok, now that you know how to create your best beauty routine, lets dive into some skincare  staples in green beauty you should have in your beauty routine.  These are products every skin type needs.  They are what give you results and an effective skincare regimen.

This is a must if you want your skincare products to be effective.  An exfoliant gets rid of the dead skin cells and reveal new cells.  When you remove the dead skin cells your enabling your skincare products to not only work, because they’re not being blocked by skin that’s just sitting on top of your face but you’re also creating a smooth surface and a brighter more even complexion.  I mean who doesn’t want that?!  You only need to exfoliate 2-3 times a week depending on your skin type.  Over exfoliation can lead to sensitivities, so don’t over do it.  I pick two days of the week and add exfoliation into my morning routine.  It keeps it simple and easy to remember.

One of my favorite exfoliants in green beauty and a staple in my routine is The Active Enzyme Exfoliator by Josh Rosebrook.  This not only utilizes a mechanical exfoliant with crushed walnuts but also an enzyme exfoliant.  It helps even discoloration, remove dead skin cells and create a glowing complexion- it’s SO good!  Beauty Hereos carries this all star product in their store!  Snag it here!

I often hear people say what does a mask really do?  My response- so much!  Masking can impart key nutrients to the skin, give you a glow, even skin tone, improve hyper pigmentation, draw out impurities and so much more.  Finding the right mask may seem daunting but it’s all about addressing your key skincare concerns.  If you really just want glowing skin, opt for a hydrating mask.  If detoxifying your skin is top priority, look for masks with clay and minerals to draw out the toxins.  Whatever your skincare need is, find a mask suited for that and then use it 2-3 times a week.  Just like exfoliation, I pick 2 days of the week and set those as my mask days.  It’s something I look forward to and creates a little ritual out of it.

One of my favorite masks I found through Beauty Heroes is Mahalo’s The Bean Antioxidant Mask.   It like a thick mud but not drying like you might assume.  It goes on easy and then dries.  However, my skin doesn’t feel dry after using it.  Instead, it feels like it just received a surge of adrenaline to the skin- in the best possible way!  I know, weird way to describe it but my skin is more awake and the blood flow to the skin is so apparent.  It was as if my skin had a good workout and is shining from the inside out.  It smells divine.  A sweet smell with notes of cacao and vanilla, ylang ylang and sandalwood.  My skin also feels much smoother, and clear.  I literally can see sun spots fading after using.  It’s evident the mask actually gets in and detoxifies the skin.  Snag the mask here!

Active Serum-

A serum is something that delivers the active ingredients directly to your skin cells.  This is where the real magic happens when it comes to seeing change and results with your skin.  A serum may contain an active form of vitamin c or hyaluronic acid.  It’s a potent blend of antioxidants that go in to repair and rejuvenating cells.  Want help with aging, dark spots or acne?  Serums are the products that will be the game changers.  I apply my serum after my toning mist.

Well, for starters it melts right into your skin.   No oily residue at all.  Perfect for at night, and during the day before makeup.  It evens my skin tone, my skin has never looked better-I know big statement but it’s true.  I have this one spot on my left cheek side and it has some hyper pigmentation and it faded quite a bit after I had been using Maya Chia.  My skin looked less red and just overall smooth.  Trust me when I say I get a lot of product to sample as a beauty blogger, so when I actually go through a product it’s a big deal.  This serum is on the last few drops.  It’s filled with vitamin C, CoQ10 and the beloved antioxidant asthaxanthin.  This serum doesn’t mess around and truly delivers!  Great for even the most sensitive skin types.  I even use it under my eyes and it works.  Say goodbye to dark circles.  Guys, this stuff is the real deal.  It has a slight pinkish color which actually gives your skin a glow-I love it! Face Oil-

Oils and serums are different.  An oil usually doesn’t contain the active ingredients like a serum would.  Not that it doesn’t help facilitate change but it’s not as active as a potent serum.  Oils are essential for hydrating the skin and bringing moisture balance.  They are also incredibly soothing too.  Contrary to popular belief oils aren’t just good for dry skin but for oily skin too.  Oil dissolves oil friends!  I know sounds crazy but it’s true.  Oils are really cure alls for many skin aliments from dry skin, irritated skin, aging skin and acne.  You can call it your one hit wonder!

A favorite oil of mine is Maya Chia’s Pure Supercritical Omega-3 Chia Oil.  It has a heavier feeling and is more moisturizing than The Super Couple Serum.  Especially great for those with dry skin that can’t quite get hydrated.  It also works amazing on fine lines.  Although it is heavier, it still absorbs so well.  Your skin feels plump and soft.  A rich, extremely hydrating oil, that absorbs quickly, doesn’t feel greasy, and makes you look younger…what are you waiting for?!  This is great for even the most sensitive skin.
