The Power Of Essential Oils With Osmia Organic’s Founder Sarah Villafranco, MD

The Power Of Essential Oils With Osmia Organic’s Founder Sarah Villafranco, MD

Sarah is an ER Doctor turned soap maker.  After almost ten years of practice, she became unsettled about the course of her career. She liked the work, and was good at it. But the practice of emergency medicine was not what she thought it would be. The paperwork. The dictations. The constant hum of worry in her brain about the existence of human error – that she could miss something with a potentially devastating result. And there was the upsetting fact that many of the patients she cared for had absolutely no interest in contributing to their own health.

She leased a commercial space in Carbondale, Colorado.  She put together a green facility with a small retail space, a soap making area, a perfumery station, and two “clean rooms” (clean room attire required) for making skin care products. She launched the store and the website in April of 2012. This is where she operates today.

She loves what she does now more than she could have ever have imagined.  She does miss a few things about being in the ER, but, in some ways, feels like she is practicing a broader medicine now – helping people choose natural and organic skin care products, encouraging them to nourish themselves physically and spiritually, and detoxifying their medicine cabinets all the while. Guiding people to make healthier choices for their skin, their bodies, their minds, and this beautiful planet seems like a brand of medicine that could really do some good.

Holistic Medicine Cabinet

Holistic Medicine Cabinet

So excited to bring you my holistic medicine cabinet product favorites today! This post has been a long time coming. I’ve wanted to share what holistic products my family uses and what I keep in my medicine cabinet on the regular. Especially with cold and flu season at the peak right now, I thought what a perfect time to really showcase what I’m using for natural and holistic products. After all, it can seem intimidating when trying to find swaps from your conventional medicine cabinet products.

*Just a reminder I am not a doctor. These are simply recommendations and things that have worked for my family. Use at your own risk and please always seek the help of a medical professional.

Ok, on to the good stuff! So I get questions all the time on what products I use for my family and when it comes to holistic medicine cabinet products. I get it, you want a natural option for when you’re sick. The truth is, these holistic remedies and natural products actually can really help. I’ve seen it in my own life.

Our immune system is super smart and really does know how to take care of us. These natural products I suggest are often helpful before you get sick, really helping to support your immune system. Sometimes you just need a little extra support, especially if your system is run down. The point is to let your body run it’s course, but help support the process, or speed it up.

Here is what’s in our Holistic Medicine Cabinet-

Vitamin C Liposomal from Seeking Health- I take this everyday.  It comes in a liquid form, that’s why it’s called a liposomal.  Liposomals are often easier to absorb.  You can read more about liposomals here on Seeking Health’s Website.  Vitamin C supports the immune system,   as it a strong antioxidant.  According to several studies, vitamin C can help increase antioxidants in your blood which end up helping you fight inflammation in your body.   It has also shown to be effective in helping shorten a cold length, even in kids. Optimal Liposomal Vitamin C Plus!

Probiotics- Your gut is so important for overall health.  Since 70% of your immune system is located in the intestines, it’s important to make sure your gut health is optimal.  Probiotics are a great way to help give your gut a boost of good bacteria.  The good bacteria in our gut help to protect us from the bad bacteria.  We always want to have more good bacteria than bad.  If we don’t we can have what is called Dysbiosis- where you have more bad bacteria than good.  I try and rotate which probiotics I take and I don’t take them all the time either.  But this is great to have in your medicine cabinet especially when you’ve had antibiotics and you need to build up your good gut bacteria again. I take Seeking Health’s Probiotics and vary them. Get the ProBiota Woman here!

Elderberry- We’ve been taking this for years.  Elderberry is known for being rich in flavonoids- specifically anthocyanins, they’re antioxidants that keep the bodies immune system strong and resilient.  They help the production of cytokines, which are messengers within the immune system.  Cytokines help to to improve the bodies immune response. Elderberries are also believed to contain antiviral properties as well.  Literally deactivating viruses. Viruses can’t increase in number by themselves, they have to get inside a healthy cell in order to replicate. Research has also shown they can kill common pathogens. Get it here!

Dr. Wholeness First Defense- I was recently introduced to this by my Naturopathic Doctor and WOW am I impressed!  Both my girls got a nasty cold and my hubs and I started taking this right away to boost our immune system and fight off the cold.  Well, we didn’t get it!  You are supposed to take them at the first sign of a cold.  I can’t recommend them enough.  They are in pill form and contain an array of powerful antioxidants, elderberry and amino acids. Get it here!

Beekeeper’s Honey/Propolis Products- I was introduced to Beekeeper’s products last year and I haven’t looked back.  Propolis is what bees lines the hives of bees as shield or protectant.  They make it from plants and tree resins.  As it lines the hive it helps to protect the bees from the outside germs.  It is pretty powerful stuff!  Propolis has over 300 powerful natural compounds known for supporting immunity.  I love the B Powered– I’ll take a teaspoon a day or add to a tea.  I also love their throat sprays.  They have them for adults and kids!  Finley, my 4 year old, loves spraying it in her mouth daily.  Here’s the kid’s spray. The sprays are especially great for travel for a boost!  Get Beekeeper’s Products here!

Biocidin- This is a spray as well and is great for travel.  It helps to soothe sore throats, and good for allergies.  It contains an array of powerful herbs.  We always have this in our arsenal! Grab it here!

Activated Charcoal- This is great to have in the medicine cabinet.  I have them in capsules.  Charcoal binds to some poisons, heavy metals, and other toxins and flushes them out of the body.  I’ve been taking this as I’ve gotten my amalgam fillings removed.  To get rid of the heavy metal content I may have been exposed to. Get some here!

Gaia Herbs-  I like a lot of their tinctures. They have high standards when it comes to their herbs, the organic certification and how they process them. The formula’s then in return are potent and effective, without added chemicals. We have used the Kid’s Elderberry Syrup, their Bronchial Wellness for kids and adults- (great for throat and respiratory health), and Lemon Balm(good for immune system and balances nervous system).  They have so many herbal formulas.  You can check more of them out here.

Oil Of Oregano- I take these in a capsule from from Seeking Health.  Oil Of Oregano is known for it’s anti-fungal properties, and natural antibiotic properties.  I’ll take this at the first sign of symptoms.  But you don’t want to take it for longer than a week from what I’ve read. Get it here!

Fire Cider- I’ve made a little tonic like this before when my hubs or I have had sore throats.  I’ve made mine before from apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, fresh ginger, honey, garlic and some cayenne pepper.  It’s like taking a shot of really strong medicine!  It will burn but in a good way.  A brand actually sells Fire Cider specifically now and has trademarked the name.  They add a few more things to their Fire Cider.  It’s also a great option when you’re just not into making one on your own.  You can take this everyday to really give you a kick in the pants and energy and immune support.  Once you start to feel something come on you can take it every couple hours. Get it here!

Host Defense Mushrooms-  I’ve been using this for a while and both my hubs and I really like it!  It contains agarikon, red reishi, chaga, birch polypore and turkey tail mushrooms.  This combination of mushrooms provides an array of immune support.  I spray this in my mouth 3 times a day. Grab it here!

Herb Pharm Mullein Garlic Pure Ear Oil- Finley got her first ear ache when she was two and this literally took the pain away.  She hasn’t had one since but I like to keep it on hand just in case.  I just apply one drop in each ear.  Get them here!

Elite Fuel Liquid D3-K2- I love having a liquid Vitamin D3-K2 that I can give my kids, since they’re not into swelling pills yet.  Having adequate Vitamin D levels help to strengthen your immune system.  A must for really keeping your body’s immune system in tip top shape!  I take a drop of this a day in the winter.  I give my 4 year old a drop a couple times a week.  Snag it here!

Doterra Breathe Oil- I actually received this from my friend Steph and love it.  I had diffused this when my kids were sick with a cold and super congested.  I also would take steamy showers with them to help open up the congestion and put a few drops in the shower to breathe in.  It’s a combination of Laurel Leaf, Eucalyptus Leaf, Peppermint Plant, Melaleuca Leaf, Lemon Peel, Ravensara Leaf, and Cardamom Seed.  I also will be using this when I need to do an aromatherapy steam session for headaches.  I don’t get headaches, usually only when pregnant.  But I’ve found if I add this to boiling water and then wait a couple minutes, then put a towel over my head and breathe in for 15 minutes my headache will go away.  It works every time!  This Breathe Oil has all the essentials oils I would normally use and more! Get it here!

Peppermint Oil- This can be used to help bring down a fever sometimes.  Don’t put directly on skin with kids or babies dilute with a carrier oil like coconut oil or olive oil first.  I apply it to the bottom’s of feet and back of neck.  Check out Peppermint Oil here.

Some Things You Might Not Find In The Medicine Cabinet-

You might not find these following things in the medicine cabinet but they’re great holistic natural remedies to have in your back pocket for helping when sick.

Traditional Medicinal Teas- This is one tea brand I really love and trust.  I always have their Throat Coat tea on hand, Ginger and their Peppermint tea.  The Throat Coat is great for soothing sore throats.  I’ll add a teaspoon of honey for added benefit. Check it out here!

Vapor Rub- I really like ZOE Organic’s Breathe Balm.  We’ve used this before on our kid’s chests when they are having congestion or a cough.  You can also make your own too!  Wellness Mama has a good recipe here.

Infrared Sauna- I didn’t really realize the benefits for immune support until my sister in law was telling me about it.  Then I looked it up and was amazed!  Infrared Saunas raise core body temperature which helps to keep the immune system strong. They also can increase white blood cell counts too in some studies, which can represent a strong immune system.

Bone Broth- Not only can this help support a healthy immune system but it also can be a great way to get some nutrients when sick.  Bone broth helps support a healthy gut with it’s collagen and amino acids.  Since we know that the majority of our immune system lives in the gut it’s important to have a healthy gut.  You can make your own bone broth here or buy this bone broth from Kettle and Fire here.

Wet Sock Treatment- This one my brother taught me.  You put on a pair of wool socks, then you freeze a pair of regular cotton socks.  Once frozen, put them on over the wool socks.  Then sleep with them on overnight.  I know it sounds crazy but it really does work! It quickly can bring down a fever,  release pressure and make you feel better in the morning.

Get Sleep- It’s no surprise that getting enough sleep is SO important.  When you don’t get proper sleep your immune system gets worn down and in turn so does your body.

Eat The Rainbow- Eating real food is going to be your best friend in keeping sickness out of your house.  When we eat real food it’s going to nourish and feed our bodies living cells that will in turn bring life to our body.  I would stick to real foods and avoid processed foods so your body can function optimally.

Avoid Sugar- I know I just said to eat real food, but I had to also put avoid sugar!  Sugar literally is going to bring your immune system down, making it harder to fight sickness.

So what’s in your holistic medicine cabinet?  I would love to hear what you always have on hand! Leave me a comment below!

How To Reverse PCOS Holistically With Kate Kordsmeier

How To Reverse PCOS Holistically With Kate Kordsmeier

In episode #31 we are learning how to heal PCOS holistically with Kate Kordsmeier.  For nearly a decade, Kate was a full-time freelance food and travel writer and recipe developer–you can find her work in over 125 magazines, newspapers and websites, including USA Today, EatingWell, Cooking Light, Travel + Leisure, Shape, FITNESS, Women’s Health, The Washington Post, Clean Eating, Vegetarian Times, Wine Enthusiast, SELF and Real Simple.

In October 2015, after being diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), Leaky Gut Syndrome (IBS), and hypothyroidism, and subsequently healing her symptoms naturally, she created Root + Revel. Though she’s a food writer—it’s literally her job to eat and report on the world’s most delicious foods—and a food lover, who believes strongly that life is not worth living without fried chicken, cheese and wine, she’s also seen firsthand the power of nutrition and how much the food we eat affects the way we feel. After her diagnosis, she was blown away by the rapid transformation she saw in her own body from simple, natural and holistic lifestyle changes. Truly, the food she ate and the natural products she used (and the toxic products she tossed!) have helped her live a near symptom-free life.  You can learn more about her diagnosis, 80-20 lifestyle and how she strikes the balance between eating well and feeling well here.

Shop all of Live Botanical here!

Beauty Heroes- $256 Value!

I’ll be giving away 1 3 month subscription to Beauty Heroes!

Leahlani Skincare- $208 Value!

Every time I open a jar, or bottle of Leahlani skincare I feel like I’m getting a hand signed love note written just to me.  It may have to do with the fact that each, and every creation is made by hand.  Can you just imagine all the love, and care that goes into each bottle?  It’s no wonder my skin sings when anything Leahlani is applied!  I haven’t even mentioned ingredients, but they’re dreamy.  Organic cold pressed oils, mineral rich clays, Hawaiian honey nectars, pure essential oils, and potent botanicals are just a few ingredients that make up Leahlani skincare.  Pure goodness delivered straight to your skin-what more could you want?  Shop all of Leahlani here!

I wanted to share my top 10 favorite Natural and Sustainable Gift Ideas for 2018 in hopes that it would help to bring awareness to the countless companies and small businesses that are really creating serious positive impact and change.  I love this quote by Anne Lappe-

Every time you spend money, you’re casting a vote for the kind of world you want.

I couldn’t agree more.  Talking about the problem is good but putting our money where our mouth is creates true impact.  Never discount your small gesture, purchase towards a business that’s doing it right.  It all counts and matters.  The more people bring awareness and spend money on natural, sustainable and ethical goods, the more the industry will move in that direction.  Another quote I love is-

If it’s to be it’s up to me.

Let’s all start thinking about what we can do, because it all counts. Check out my top 10 natural/sustainable favorites below and then be sure to download the other guides to get a jump on the Christmas shopping!

Top 10 Favorite Natural & Sustainable Gift Ideas For 2018-

  1. Everlane Women’s Apparel When it comes to ethical clothing brands Everlane takes the cake.  This brand goes above and beyond to ensure their products not only are ethically made but that they’re completely transparent with their customer from start to finish.  The quality is impeccable too.  It’s time to start bringing light to what is happening to the clothing industry and share brands that are pioneering sustainable clothing. Check out Everlane Women’s Apparel
  2. Earth Easy Denim Apron-Nothing gets you in the spirit of cooking like a snazzy new apron!  This one is made with hemp and a blend of organic cotton.  Cooking our food is one the best investments we can make in our health and our environment!  Less food wrappers, less waste.  No too mention the amazing health benefits our bodies receive when we cook our food.  Our kids will thank us later in life as they had a foundation of real food to grow up on.  If you or someone you know needs some motivation to get back in the kitchen I suggest grabbing this apron. It might just bring out a little Marth Stewart in you!  Check out the Earth Easy Denim Apron here!
  3. Joco Glass Reusable Coffee Cup- I was on the hunt for the longest time for a legit reusable nontoxic coffee cup- think I finally found it.  I didn’t want one that was made from stainless steel because stainless steel can leach heavy metals at times- particularly with hot beverages.  I also didn’t want ceramic since many ceramics can contain lead.  I was on the search for glass and I found it!  No plastic either!  Plus, I find my hot drink will taste funky if I use stainless steel.  I’m not perfect when it comes to always bringing my cup with me if I get a hot beverage somewhere but I want to be better!  Even if one person bought 3 coffees a week and used a reusable cup it would save up to 156 cups a year!  Think it doesn’t matter?  It does.  Check out the Joco cup here!
  4. Marley Monsters- I’m pretty sure we could all conserve a little more when it comes to using less paper, plastic, etc.  Marley Monsters is a company I started to buy things from years ago and I love how much they’ve grown!  They have everything from reusable paper towels, cloth napkins, cloth wipes for babies, facial rounds, nursing pads- one of my faves.  I can’t recommend their products enough!  Investing in reusable products creates less waste but also saves you money in the long run.  What a cool gift to give someone to get them started on using less.  Check out Marley Monsters here!
  5. WillowCoDesign Shirts- I found this cute shop on Etsy and fell in love with all their organic t-shirts for babies and kids.  They have the cutest sayings!  I love supporting small businesses and people that are making a difference.  This business is owned by a mama who is sharing her passion for whole living.  Some of my favorite shirts or onesies are Strong Like My Mama, and Forest Child.  Check out WillowCoDesign Shirts here!
  6. The Cotton and Canvas Co. Tote- Ok, we hear it all the time- bring a reusable bag, but do we really understand why?  The US alone uses 380 billion plastic bags per year according to the EPA(Environmental Protection Agency).  Most people only use one plastic bag for 12 minutes.  These single use plastics are adding up and producing some serious problems for the environment and humans.  They’re filling up landfills and then getting into our water systems.  Our water ends up contaminated and so does our oceans.  What can we do?  Simple, bring a reusable shopping bag with us.  They have so many cute one’s now!  Cotton Canvas Tote is an etsy shop that carries so many options and they have such fun sayings on them.  You can even design your own!  I’m in the process of doing it- you may be in for a giveaway on Instagram soon!  Check out Cotton Canvas Tote here!
  7. 8. Natural Beauty- You didn’t think I was going to share my top 10 natural and sustainable products and not mention how important natural beauty is?!  When the average woman puts on 12 products a day, that can put a person at quite a toxic load.  It’s not the random product you use once in a while that matters but the products you use all the time that create a toxic burden.  Many people are just unaware of the amazing natural beauty products out there now!  There is literally an alternative to anything you might have used in conventional beauty.  Anyone would be excited to get some new nontoxic beauty products!  Some stores I love shopping at for natural beauty products are The Detox Market, Aillea and Pharmaca.  Also, be sure to download my full Natural Gift Guide to get my top recommendations for natural beauty and natural skincare options!
  9. Organic Sheets and Pillows- Another heavy hitter when it comes to toxic burden.  They say we sleep for a 1/3 of our lives.  That’s a lot of hours logged on our sheets and pillows.  Cotton is one of the most heavily sprayed crops.  Being doused with synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.  However, that’s not the only thing we should be concerned about.  Sheets often contain formaldehyde, and toxic dyes too.  There are also toxic softeners that are used now on bedding, creating a recipe for a toxic sleep experience!  It’s not just our bodies we should be concerned about but also our environment.  As the toxic chemicals from conventional sheets end up in our waterways.  I love Sol Organix and Huut for organic, ethically made sheet sets.  Use coupon code: GGG25 for 25% off your sheets at Sol Organix or Huut!  I also love White Lotus Home for pillows!  My whole family has pillows from them and we can’t stop talking about them.  They have so many different varieties, depending on how you sleep.  Use my coupon code: GGG for 20% off!
  10. Imperfect Produce- I found Imperfect Produce a while back and was excited about their whole mission!  They take imperfect produce from local farms that would otherwise go to waste and deliver to people.  Not only does this reduce food waste but you’re also getting quality produce for a deal!  You save 30% off grocery store prices and the produce is delivered to your door.  I’ve never heard someone complain about saving money.  They offer organic or conventional produce.  You might be thinking how does this work?  Allow me to explain.  Imperfect Produce sources veggies straight from farms, you as a consumer customize your box each week to get what you want, then you get your box delivered to your home. If you don’t think this is a bid deal it is!  So far Imperfect Produce has saved over 30 million pounds of food, 900 million gallons of water, 12 million dollars saved on groceries and 91 million pounds of C02 saved.  I think it’s making an impact.  Give someone the gift of health, while at the same time changing the world- Check out Imperfect Produce here!
