Beauty Heroes August Discovery: Maya Chia

Natural Beauty Box Roundup

What a treat to see Maya Chia in this month’s Beauty Heroes box!

Before I even dive into the Maya Chia review I first must tell you what makes them SO special. The all star ingredient in Maya Chia is the supercritical chia oil.  Not only is chia oil heralded for it’s fast absorbing ability, but also for it’s antioxidants, minerals, and omega’s- a skin’s dream team!  You can say bye to fine lines and wrinkles.  Plus, it has clinically been proven to increase hydration. Check out my full review on Maya Chia I did last year to learn about how they extract the chia oil!  Read about it here!

I love hearing how a brand gets started and Maya Chia has quite a story.  The founder Suzanne Norwitz went from the corporate ladder to pursue her passion in creating the best quality skincare.  She was also interested in the Mayan people, that began with her father.  He is a surgeon and would go to Guatemala to operate on Mayan’s with clef lip palates.  She even has two step children now that were both born in Guatemala.  Her love for the culture grew and she discovered the power of chia in the Mayan culture.  Thus, Maya Chia was born!

Refresh Mint Resurfacing Moisture Mask- This mask is one of the newest products to hit Maya Chia’s line.  To try a Maya Chia product is to love it!  They perform so well.  So when I was sent the newest Refresh Mint Mask, I basically had to hold myself back from using it the minute I got it.  This is unlike any mask I’ve used before in natural beauty.

It’s a resurfacing moisture mask.  It takes a drab complexion and instantly awakens it and gives it a glow.  If your skin is feeling less than, this mask is for you.  It uses 4 different types of acids, enzymes, moisturizers to help slough off dead skin cells, hydrate and give you your glow back.  A little magic potion in a bottle.  I apply it to dry clean skin.  Once applied I let it sit on my skin until its dry.  Then rinse off with warm water.  My skin is left with a glow, and smoothness that makes your skin look radiant!  I’m so excited to keep using it and see my skin improve overtime.

The Optimist-  This gem is housed in a dark glass bottle, preserving every last drop of goodness.  Smells divine with hints of neroli, sweet orange, and ylang ylang.  The formula itself feels so hydrating on the skin and refreshing with white tea, antioxidants, fatty acids and phytonutrients- just to name a few.  I can’t forget the actual spray function.  It works so well!  I know it might sound funny, but after trying hundreds of mists in my day, the spray function is actually quite important.  You don’t want the mist to feel like it’s attacking your skin or spraying you in the eye!  The Optimist sprays so well all over the face.  The founder Susanne nailed it!

This Beauty Heroes August Discovery is going to go fast!  A definite must for the August natural beauty box roundup. If you’re wanting to snag this, hop on it.  This discovery is valued at $97 but you can get it for $58.95!  A huge savings. Get it here!

Boxwalla: The Secret Symphony Of Skincare

Natural Beauty Box

This month’s Boxwalla’s box is definitely a show stopper! I have fallen for Heart Of Gold!

I love when a Boxwalla box shows up on my doorstep.  It’s like getting a very special skincare gift delivered right to me. I also love that this box is a bi-monthly box versus a monthly box.  It really makes me savor the skincare products and not get overwhelmed.  This month is totally special and of course had to be added to my August natural beauty box roundup.

The founders of Boxwalla do such a great job of picking the best of the best when it comes to skincare.  They really do the research when it comes to finding unique green beauty skincare products.  This month is no different!  Sometimes I feel like a broken record when it comes to Boxwalla’s box but it’s because they always deliver every other month.

Sea Change Cleansing Balm- This product is so lovely.  It comes in a glass jar and comes in a cream texture.  I take a small dime size amount and apply it to dry skin, rubbing all over my skin.  This helps to loosen the dirt and makeup from the day.  Then it turns into a milky consistency when I rinse my face with water.  I love how it comes off so easily with water.  My skin is left feeling so hydrated and clean but not stripped.  I’ve been especially loving this in the morning.  It really gives my skin an extra boost of hydration before I apply my makeup.

Modern Love Gommage Gel- This is a unique skincare product.  It comes in a glass jar as well and in a green gel like formula. It smells like jasmine.  It’s an exfoliant, but different than a traditional skincare exfoliant.  I massaged this into my skin and then waited for 1 minute before it’s almost dry and then started to massage my skin again.  This creates small peels and helps to peel off the dead layer of skin and the gel.  Your skin is left feeling refreshed and smooth.  I noticed immediately a glow from using this product.  My skin was definitely happy!

Sweet Briar Hydrating Nectar- This is a serum and moisturizer in one.  It not only has the powerful skin benefits of a serum that helps to calm redness and soothe the skin but it also moisturizes similar to a lotion.  This is perfect for the warmer summer months when you might not want a heavy moisturizer on your skin.  I applied this to my skin after the gommage gel.  My skin still needed a little more hydration after applying the serum/moisturizer.  So I would apply my favorite day time lotion if it was daytime or an oil at night.  I was excited to learn you could also use this as a mask too!  Double duty!  You just leave it on for 10 minutes.

This whole skincare ritual by Heart Of Gold is so special and unique!  The value is insane too.  You can get all of this for $49.95 and the value is $180.  Get the Boxwalla August Box here!

Stay tuned for more in the August natural beauty box roundup!  As the boxes roll out I’ll be sharing my faves.

Natural Nighttime Skincare Routine

Natural Nighttime Skincare Routine

So excited to share with you my Natural Nighttime Skincare Routine.  I find people often aren’t sure what a beauty routine is or where to even start.  Or perhaps they think they have a routine, yet instead it looks a little more chaotic.  In this post, I want to help you create a nighttime beauty routine that you not only love but that works for you.  I will also be sharing some of my staples in my beauty routine and how they create the base of it.  If it’s one thing I’ve learned since being in the beauty industry for over 14 years it’s that a beauty routine should not be ignored.

Welcome to the #betterforyoucrew! I’ve teamed up with my girls Lisa from This Organic Girl, Sarah from Whoorl, Kate from Root & Revel, Caroline from Olive You Whole and Kristina from Love & Zest to highlight green, yet effective food, beauty and lifestyle products that are rocking our natural mama worlds. This series will publish the last week of every month so check back for the latest. You can also search #betterforyoucrew on our blogs and Instagram to access the entire series. Wanna join in? Tag #betterforyoucrew on social with your picks. We want to see your faves too!  For last month’s post on Favorite kitchen gadgets- check it out here.

Step 1- Identify What You Need

In essence, the goal is to find the products that speak to you, work with you and that you love.  The end result is creating a nighttime  beauty routine that is not only functional but one you enjoy.

For example, some people aren’t into having 7 skincare products.  They just want 3 that really work.  On the other hand, some love their skincare routine and couldn’t go without one of their beloved products.

Natural Nighttime routine

Best Natural and Organic Night time Skincare Routine

The point?  Do you!  Create a nighttime beauty routine that feels right for you, not someone else.  After all, I truly believe that’s what holds up many people in having a routine at all.  They feel overwhelmed and don’t know where to start.  Know what you need, find it and use it.  Your body will thank you and so will your subconscious as you take a little time each day just for you.

Step 2- Find Your Favorites & Staples

If you’re wondering how to find those products think about what you always use everyday or what you find you want to use but might not have.  Maybe you have really dry skin and to not have a moisturizer would be the end of the world for you.  Find what you need and works for you.

Step 3- Commit To Your Routine

Once you know what you need and find the products you love, then it’s time to commit to your routine.  Often people complain about beauty results because they aren’t consistent with their routine.  The point of finding products you need and love is your more likely to stick with them, because you love using them and they make you feel good.

When you’re consistent with your routine, your skin will show it.

Night Routine-

My nighttime routine is all about restoring and relaxing.  At night I really like to take more time and savor my beauty routine.  It may sound funny but for me taking 10 minutes for myself at night really helps me mentally process the day and relaxes me.  Especially as a mom it’s easy to go throughout the day not really doing anything for yourself. This little act really creates a space to ease my mind.  I find myself looking forward to it every night.  Restoring my skin is an important part of my night routine.  After being in the elements during the day I like to give it the nutrients it needs to help restore it. That being said, morning and nighttime skincare routines look different usually.  I’m going to give a brief explanation of products you could use for your morning or nighttime skincare to get you familiar with your options.

Cleansers- A cleanser is meant to be the first step in your skincare routine.  It helps to get rid of dirt, debris and get rid of makeup from the day.  Of course there are many cleansers to choose from depending on your skin type. Some people like to double cleanse, others not so much. Whatever method or cleanser you choose just make sure that it adequately cleans your skin and you’re not left with any residue. I have a full blog post with all my favorites. Check it out!

Toner/Hydrosol- These terms are used interchangeably to describe a mist that you spray over your skin post cleansing.  A true hydrosol contains plant actives.  Some people will spray the mist directly on their skin and press in with their hands, others will spray on a cotton round and apply it in on their skin.  Either way, a toner or hydrosol helps to calm skin, hydrate, keep pores open for serums/oil and specific skin treatments.  A toner helps to also get rid of any oil or bits left from the cleanser, as well as balance the ph of skin.

Treatments-  Treatments for the skin can range from anti-aging treatments, redness reducing treatments, hyper pigmentation targeting, and acne treatments.  Theses are going to be filled with active ingredients that are really going to perform.  Think antioxidants! It really depends on what result you’re looking for in your skin.  These aren’t going to necessarily hydrate your skin.  Most are made out of water or aloe, some contain oil, but few.  They penetrate the skin quickly and feel almost like a gel.  They absorb into your skin, opposed to creams that generally sit on top of your skin.  The absorption happens easier because serums are smaller in molecular size and easier to penetrate the skin and deliver nutrients.  Serums happen after toning or hydrosol when skin’s pores are still open.  I have a full blog post on all my favorite serums for the skin here!

Oils- After a serum, now it’s time for an oil.  There has been a resurgence of oils in the last 5 years.  People used to be afraid of them, but now they are learning how hydrating and restorative they can be for the skin.  Just remember not every oil is created equal.  Some are comedogenic and can actually clog your pores or cause you to breakout.  For example, coconut oil is comedogenic and can actually cause many people to breakout.  If you’re not sure about the comedogenic rating look it up or ask the formulator. Oils are very hydrating and can keep the moisture intact for a long time.  A great pick for those with dry skin.

Skin Creams/Lotions- Many people aren’t sure what the difference is between an oil, a cream and a lotion.  Allow me to explain.  An oil is just that- just an oil- nothing added.  A cream has a mix of water and oil, but more oil than water and then a lotion is also a mixture of water and oil but the higher percentage is water- which makes it thinner.  Creams are great at protecting the skin, especially after applying an oil and if you need additional moisture.  I like doing them at night.  A lotion is good for in the morning when you want some hydration but don’t want to be too greasy from an oil.

Balms- Balms are another product that really has been popping up all over in the skincare industry over the last two years.  Balms are primarily used for intense hydration and protection.  In the winter they are great for protecting skin from wind and cold.  They are more concentrated than a lotion or cream.  A lot of formulators like them because they are usually waterless and therefore don’t need preservatives to keep them fresh.  A little goes a long way with a balm- so you don’t need as much as you would with a lotion or cream.

Eye Cream/Oil- Eye products come in a variety of formulas.  From creams to oils and even some that are more like a serum.  I prefer an oil or serum myself because I suffer from milia. Tiny hard white cysts under the skin.  They can form when keratin gets trapped under the skin.  I try and stay away from heavy products for the eyes as I’ve noticed they can lead to more.  If your under eye area is really dry then you would want to opt for a heavier eye cream or nourishing oil.  Some eye oils or serums I’ve found to be oilier than others.  I have a full blog post coming on my faves that I’ve been working on forever!  I like mine to absorb fairly quickly too.

Exfoliants- Exfoliants are so crucial to effective skincare- can’t recommend them enough!  If your skin is dead on top, whatever products you put on top of your skin aren’t going to be able to penetrate and perform.  There are many different types of exfoliants.  From mechanical, enzyme and chemical exfoliants.  Mechanical exfoliants use some sort of manual grain or seeds to manually remove the dead skin.  Enzyme exfoliants is similar to chemical exfoliation but much gentler.  It breaks down the glue that holds together dead skin.  It uses active ingredients like papain, papaya and pineapple to slough off the dead skin. Enzyme exfoliation is great for someone with sensitive skin.  There’s no actual manual exfoliant involved.  Another type is chemical exfoliation.  Chemical exfoliation is stronger than enzyme exfoliation.  It uses Alpha Hydroxy Acids(AHA’s) or Beta Hydroxy Acids(BHA’s).  AHA’s are not as strong as BHA’s.  A lot of peels are considered chemical exfoliants.  Chemical exfoliants are great for those with oily skin and acne.

Masks- Love a good mask!  Masks are like giving your skin a good shot of  nutrients at once.  Similar to drinking a really nutrient dense green juice for your body.  There are so many benefits to masking.  From detoxification, unclog pores, glowing skin, minimizing redness, hydration- the list goes on!  It’s great to have different masks for different seasons of life too.  In the winter you may need a hydrating mask more.  In the summer, a detoxification mask- each season can bring a new set of skincare challenges.  Some masks are quick and are just meant to give your skin a glow in 5 minutes before a big event or date.

Ok, now that you’ve just been schooled on all skincare products, let’s break down what you actually need in your skincare routine.

nighttime skincare routine

Establish your nighttime skincare routine using products you love.

So it really depends on what you want your outcome to be.  Do you want your skin to just feel clean, and hydrated?  Maybe you’re not into all the extras but just want a nighttime skincare routine that meets the basic needs and that’s it.  Or maybe you want to fade hyper pigmentation, minimize redness and increase collagen- ok then you’re probably going to need a few more products!

Think about your end goal when it comes to your skin and that will help guide you to the products you need.

  • Cleanse- I cleanse my skin with one cleanser typically.  I used to oil cleanse, but I’ve found I really love a cleanser that does it all in one step and that I can remove easily with just water and not a washcloth.  A couple of my favorite cleansers in green beauty that do that are- OSEA Ocean Cleanser, an amazing cleanser that leaves my skin feeling balanced, not stripped, removes all my makeup and rinses off easily with water.  I also love Marie Veronique’s Cleansing Oil. It acts like an oil cleanser but emulsifies(suds up) ever so slightly.  It’s great!  It also removes all my eye makeup and everything easily and rinses off with water.
  • Toner/Hydrosol- I use the same toner for my skin at night that I do in the morning generally.  Unless I’m testing out several at once.  My top pick would be Maya Chia’s the Optimist!
  • Exfoliant- Next I will exfoliate if I need too.  I generally exfoliate twice a week.  People can over exfoliate, creating disruptions to their natural ph.  I love Josh Rosebrook’s Active Enzyme Exfoliant, and Laurel’s Honey Berry Enzyme Mask.  The Active Enzyme Exfoliant includes manual exfoliants using walnut shells and it incorporates enzymes as well. The Honey Berry Enzyme Mask is great for those with sensitive skin as it uses enzymes to exfoliate.
  • Mask- I generally mask two to three times per week.  If it’s a day for a mask I’ll do it after toning or exfoliating.  My mask varies depending on what my skin needs.  For a good all around mask, I recommend Leahlani Mermaid Mask, for lightening and detoxification I recommend Mahalo’s The Bean Antioxidant Mask, for skin problems I love May Linstrom’s The Problem Solver Mask.  For a full review of my favorite masks- check out my blog post here.
  • Treatment/Serum- Next I will apply a treatment or serum.  For me this is usually my True Botanical’s Cellular Repair Serum and Antioxidant Booster.  These two have literally helped change my skin and given me tangible results!  The Cellular Repair Serum goes past the outer most layer of the skin to really get in and provide all the nutrients the skin needs.  The Antioxidant Booster is a powder and isn’t activated until you mix it with a liquid.  I love this because then you are getting the most potent and active ingredients right away!  Most antioxidant treatments are liquid and are not as effective since they’ve already been activated.  I apply my Cellular Repair Serum first.  Then I mix my Antioxidant Booster with my oil.  This helps the Antioxidant Booster to absorb better into the skin, compared to mixing it with the Cellular Repair Serum.
  • Oil- Now time for an oil!  I have been using True Botanical’s Calm Serum since being pregnant, it is completely pregnancy safe.
  • Eye Cream/Serum- Next I apply my eye serum or eye cream.  I’ve been using Odacite’s B+S Eye Serum for a while and love it!  It isn’t super oily, absorbs nicely and my eyes look refreshed and revived in the morning.  Can’t recommend it enough.
  • Lips- Ok, last but not least I apply Odacite’s Lip Serum.  I love this lip serum!  It helps to hydrate, minimize fine lines on the lips and plump.  I love applying as my last step in my skincare routine.  My lip’s nightly nightcap!

That sums up my nighttime skincare routine!  Now it’s time to create your own.  I’ve created this free download for you to be able to see what products work for different skin types.  I have something for sensitive, dry/normal, and combination/oily.  Click the photo below to download!

Ilia takes the cake when it comes to natural beauty that is both affective and clean!

Ilia True Skin Serum Primer

I was SO excited to get this in the mail.  It was backordered for a while from Aillea and I was on the edge of my seat to get one of the first bottles the minute it came back into stock.  Ilia is on of those green beauty brands that’s been around from the beginning and keeps producing stellar products.  They work like conventional products and offer the same benefits.

I love their True Skin Serum Foundation so I knew I had to try their True Skin Serum Primer.  It basically had my name written all over it.  It’s a liquid primer with a hint of shimmer.  Nothing crazy people.  You can’t even see it.  It gives your skin a lit from within glow.  It’s meant to be applied after your moisturizer, right before foundation application.  You will feel your skin tighten slightly and your fine lines filled in.  It creates such a smooth even canvas for your makeup to be applied.  It even helps to diminish pores.  My skin looked lit from within and had such a glow.  I can’t get enough!  It doesn’t make your skin feel greasy at all but has a weightless moisture feel to it.  You’re skin really does look like it’s glowing.  Check it out here!

Ilia Eye Primer

I’ve talked about this nonstop but as the weather has warmed up there is no denying my need for this even more.  It keeps my eyeshadow in place like nothing else.  The pigment stands out and is richer because of this primer.  Gone are the days of creasing shadows that fade as the day goes on.  This Primer is in a league of it’s own!

I apply it to my eye lid all over.  Then take my finger and tap it into my eyelid.  Then apply my shadow. (BTW, check out my favorite eye shadow in green beauty here- seriously nothing compares)!  It gives my shadow something to adhere to.  If you haven’t found a natural beauty eye primer yet, then look no further.  This wand eye primer does the job so well! Check it out here!

Suntegrity 5-in-1 Moisturizing Lotion Tint is such an amazing BB cream that offers sun protection.

Suntegrity 5-In-1 Moisturizing Face Sunscreen Tinted

This BB cream is so good!  It definitely hits all the marks for a great tinted sunscreen.  From superb coverage, hydration and good tint.  Plus, it offers a broad spectrum spf of 30.  It provides spf coverage with non-nano zinc oxide.  It also comes in four colors which makes it easy to find one that matches your skin tone.

I love this tinted moisturizer because it feels more like a foundation to me then just a lotion with a slight tint.  I like a little more coverage and this provides it without looking cakey or overly done.  It wears well in the water too!  I love how smooth and even the formula looks on the skin.  Trust me, you’ll love it!  Grab yours here!

Fitglow Beauty Colour Lip Serums are in a league of their own!

Fitglow Beauty New Lip Colour Serum Duo in Kind+ Rose

This is one of Fitglow’s newest launches.  If you’ve followed me you know I have a thing for their lip serums!  They are like nothing you’ll use.  I’m not a huge fan of glosses but these are so different than a traditional gloss.  They don’t look goopy or tacky but glide on your skin effortlessly and provide such a smooth finish.  What’s even cooler is that they’re filled with antioxidants and vitamins that not only nourish your lips but keep them looking young and fresh.  It’s like a lip serum with color and a subtle shine- what more could you want?!

My lips stay hydrated and have a subtle shine.  I also love how the color pigment looks.  It’s not overwhelmingly but just enough to give your lips a little pop.  They have so many amazing color options to choose from so if you’re not a fan of Kind and Rose, check them all out.  I also can’t get enough of Bliss, Go, Gospel and Nudie.  Ok, clearly I have a problem they’re all gorgeous!  Check out all the colors here!

Maya Chia’s newest product the Refresh Mint is a mask you’ll keep coming back too!

Maya Chia Refresh Mint Mask

This mask is one of the newest products to hit Maya Chia’s line.

Malu SPF Moisturizer by Honua Skincare not only hydrates skin but also acts as a primer!

Honua Skincare Malu

Malu is a protection day cream with spf 30.  It comes in a dark glass pump bottle- I love that you can turn the cap for when you travel.  It comes out white when you apply it to your skin but quickly fades to clear as you rub it in.  The natural sun protectant in the formula is non-nano zinc oxide.  It feels SO nice on the skin.  It hydrates but doesn’t leave behind a greasy residue.

It really feels like a nice primer too.  Really filling in lines and creating a perfect canvas for makeup application.  I also felt I had a bit of a glow using it.  I really dig it!  Some facial sunscreens can feel heavy or greasy but not Malu!   A great way to protect your skin in the summer months but even year round it would be great under makeup or by itself.  Get it here!

Natural Winter Skincare

Natural Winter Skincare

Anyone else wondering what natural winter skincare faves to have on hand this season?  Winter is full on here, I mean we finally have snow, ice and some seriously cold temps. When it’s this cold, I’m either happiest when I’m sitting next to a fire, drinking something warm or bundled up- who’s with me?!  This mama likes warm temps! I’ve had so many winter skincare questions lately that I thought I would do a dedicated post on the subject.  After all, as the seasons change, so should your skincare.  When it’s cold and dry your skin needs different things then when it’s hot and humid. So if your skin’s been freaking out the past few weeks- keep reading!  It’s time to address some of the common skin issues when winter strikes!

Hydrate

It’s no secret that the air becomes drier when winter comes.  The air no longer holds as much moisture like it does in the warm months.  When the air is drier, skin also can get drier.  Unfortunately, this can lead to skin cracking, redness and overall heightened sense of sensitivity.  When your skin loses it’s moisture barrier, it can easily get infamed. Not a recipe for skin success!

How to combat moisture loss?

I’m going to get to creams and oils, but it’s also important to really think about what you’re using to cleanse your skin.  Are you cleansing your skin with a harsh cleanser that is going to strip your skin and leave it feeling drier? Swap out your spring or summer cleanser for a oil based or cream cleanser.  This will nourish your skin from the very beginning of your routine, keeping your skin balanced from the start.

natural skincare winter

Sharing the best natural cleansers for the winter season.

Here are some of my favorite natural winter skincare cleansers-

  • Beautycounter Cleansing Balm- If you’re not familiar with a cleansing balm allow me to explain.  A cleansing balm feels just like the name suggests- a balm.  It’s thick and you only need a small amount applied to dry skin to get all the makeup, and grime off from the day.  Once you’re done rubbing in circular motions with it, then you take a warm washcloth and use it to remove it all.  The beauty of a cleansing balm is your skin doesn’t feel dried out at all afterwards.  It feels balanced, and so hydrated!  Grab it here!
  • OSEA Ocean Cleanser- This is one of my favorite cleansers in clean beauty.  It isn’t drying but not overly hydrating either.  A good balance for sure.  If you tend to have oily skin, or live in a pretty mild climate during the winter this would be a great cleanser.  I first get my skin damp, then apply this cleanser all over my skin. Grab it here!
  • Mahalo Unveil Cleanser- This is another cleanser that is similar to a cleansing balm.  However, I do get my skin damp first before applying this.  It emulsifies a little(gets sudsy) when you apply to skin with water.  It feels so good on the skin!! It removes all the makeup, and grime easily too.  Grab it here!
  • Christina Moss Organic Facial Wash- This facial wash is both affordable and effective!  It is great for the most sensitive skin types.  It doesn’t leave your skin dry and yet removes your makeup and grime.  I apply to wet skin and rub in circular motions and then rinse off. Grab it here!
  • Beautycounter Nourishing Cleanser- I’ve only been using this cleanser for two weeks, so I hesitated to put it in here but it really is so good I couldn’t not share!  It’s perfect for dry, winter months.  I apply it to damp skin and rub it all over my skin- removes my eye makeup and everything. It’s a really creamy consistency.  Ideal for those skin types that are really dry and sensitive.  It’s also pretty budget friendly too. Grab it here!

So now that you know what cleansers to use to not dry out your skin even more, let’s talk about exfoliants.

Exfoliants

During the winter months since skin is more sensitive and vulnerable, it’s best to steer clear of the manual exfoliants.  Some people might do fine with them depending on their skin type but overall physical exfoliants can be too harsh.

It’s best to stick with chemical or enzyme exfoliants.  Enzyme exfoliants are similar to chemical exfoliation but much gentler.  It breaks down the glue that holds together dead skin.  They use active ingredients like papain, papaya and pineapple to slough off the dead skin. Chemical exfoliants are great for those with oily skin and acne.

natural skincare winter

Best natural beauty exfoliants for the winter season.

Here are some of my favorite natural winter skincare exfoliants-

  • Leahlani Honey Love- This is a gentle exfoliant using enzymes to help slough off dead skin cells.  It is healing, brightening and exfoliating all at the same time.  Especially great for those with combination or acne prone skin.  I apply this to damp clean skin and rub in circular motions.  Then I let it sit on my skin for 3-5 minutes. Grab it here!
  • Laurel Honey Berry Enzyme Mask- This is also an enzyme exfoliator that gently lifts away dead skin.  It smells so good!  A mixture of honey, berries and grapefruit.  I apply this to damp skin, rub in circular motions and then let it sit on skin for 5-30 minutes.  Grab it here!
  • Pai Kukui & Jojoba Bead Skin Brightening Exfoliator- I discovered this exfoliator last year and since have been using it.  It really helps to brighten skin gently using jojoba beads. The jojoba beads aren’t harsh but gentle.  They glide over the skin easily, not disrupting skin’s natural moisture balance.  I apply this to clean damp skin and rub in circular motions.  Especially great for sensitive skin types. Grab it here!
  • Ursa Major Bright and Easy 3-Minute Flash Mask- This mask gets you glowing in 3 minutes flat- just like the name suggests.  It’s perfect for the most sensitive skin types.  Worried your skin might react to a harsh exfoliant?  This may be the one for you.  Using enzymes to dissolve dead skin cells, this mask does it all in 3 minutes!  It looks like a gel and feels light and refreshing on the skin.  If you’re perpetually running late, this may be the mask for you!  I put it on before I brush my teeth and rinse off once I’m done.  The perfect amount of time to get a quick glow for the rest of the day. Grab it here!

Ok, now that we’ve got cleansers and exfoliants down, let’s talk about oils and creams.

Facial Oils

Oils are definitely the rage, but for good reason!  An oil consists of essential fatty acids that help to bring moisture to the skin. They also help to repair the outer layer of the skin so you don’t lose more moisture.  Our bodies don’t produce EFA’s on their own so we need to supplement them internally and externally.  I like taking a fish oil daily for some good omega 3’s.  Oils also can contain a mix of essential oils that help to balance the skin and provide therapeutic properties.  Oil’s work perfectly with our skin’s cutaneous and get to the center of the epidermis.  Many people with oily skin think they should avoid oils- when really the opposite is true.  Using oils helps bring balance to the skin and don’t clog pores(if you choose the right ones) like other moisturizers that contain emulsifiers, waxes, etc.

Here are some of my favorite natural winter skincare oils-

  • Supercritical Pure Chia Oil- (dry skin, sensitive) This oil is made for even the driest skin types.  Literally hydrating the most parched skin.  It also has ingredients that plump up the skin and minimize fine lines.  This is an all around super hydrator.  I use it in the morning before my makeup or after a serum at night when I need some extra moisture.  Your skin will feel like silk!  Read more on the Supercritical Pure Chia Oil here and get one for yourself here!
  • Osmia Organic’s Nectar Vital Rose Drops- The name is so appropriate for it, it truly feels like nectar on your skin, a rich luxe oil.  Some oils feel thinner but this one feels fatty-haha are you still with me?!  Let’s just say I love the feel of it.  And the smell, amazing!  Subtle rose, sandalwood and jasmine envelope you.  I applied this at night and in the morning.  At night I applied it after the toner and my skin just drank it up.  In the morning my skin felt silky smooth and hydrated.  It was as if it had a big drink of water at night and was infused with oxygen.  Seriously, it’s SO good!  You only need a few drops too.  Having dry skin once the weather starts to turn I like adding a heavier moisturizer/oil in the morning.  This was just the ticket.  I allowed my skin to soak it up for 5 minutes before applying my makeup.  You guys will love this, trust me!  With only 8 ingredients, this 99.6% organic nectar is seriously so lovely. Grab it here!
  • Holi(oil) Youth Serum- This frosted bottle contains a rich oil that smells like roses.  Not only does it help smooth skin and wrinkles but it also is extremely hydrating.  It doesn’t feel greasy at all and seeps into your skin, giving your face a radiance.  My skin looked restored.  I used this after several sleepless nights and it literally brought the life back into my skin.  It’s true to it’s name- giving you your youthful skin back!  There isn’t a long list of ingredients but the ones that are in there are effective.  I also love using this before makeup.  My foundation glides on.  Bonus- my husband can use it too!  This has barely any ingredients and scores a 2 when it comes to comedogenic rating. Which means it’s most likely not to cause clogged pores in people, however it could still in some.
    Grab your bottle here!
  • Indie Lee Squalane Oil- Helps with texture and appearance of skin tone.  It nourishes the skin without feeling greasy.  Has a comedogenic rating of 0-1. I love how simplistic this oil is.  It literally only contains squalene oil- that’s it!  Great for sensitive skin and for improving the overall quality of the skin’s appearance.  Grab it here!

  • Pai Rosehip Seed Oil- This oil has a rating of 1 on the comedogenic scale. Rosehip seed oil is great for so many things, from hydrating skin to calming inflammation.  I love that this oil only has 3 ingredients.  It’s really known for it’s healing properties and it’s rich Omega 3, 6, 7 & 9 plus antioxidant Carotenoids content.   This is also budget friendly oil! Grab it here!

  • Marie Veronique Soothing B3 Serum- This serum is good all seasons but especially in the dead of winter when skin can get irritated and extra sensitive from the elements.  It helps to calm the skin with essential B Vitamins.  It helps to calm sensitivity and redness and reduce acne.  It doesn’t have any essential oils in it either!  Regular use of Niacinamide has shown to help ease inflammation and overall acne.  This isn’t hydrating on it’s own, it’s a gel consistency.  I would apply this before an oil.  Make sure if you do struggle with acne, that you’re not getting a comedogenic oil.  The Indie Lee Squalene Oil and the Pai Rosehip Seed Oil would be good oils to start with above. Grab it here!

Now that you know what oil to choose, let’s dive into creams.

Creams

Many people aren’t sure what the difference is between an oil, a cream and a lotion.

We are going to focus on creams and their benefits.  They really are the superstar in the winter for dry skin.  They really help to protect skin and hold in the moisture.

Here are some of my favorite natural winter skincare creams-

  • Joshrosebrook Vital Balm Cream- The Vital Balm Cream is hands down one of my favorite moisturizers. It feels creamy to the touch-not greasy and when I apply it my skin’s dryness dissipates and I’m left with plump hydrated skin.  Ok, the smell…well it’s amazing! One of the best smelling products I’ve ever used.  It has a fresh, light smell with vanilla enveloping all of it and blue tansy and ylang ylang notes throughout-I’m obsessed with the smell.  It has the properties of a balm but feels like a cream-I mean it’s kind a dream cream!  Can we talk about the color too?!  The baby mint/blue hue just looks cool. The ingredient I was excited to learn about in the product is Indian Senna Seed.  It really performs just like it supposed to in this cream.  It’s been called the botanical hyaluronic acid, it gives skin the ability to retain moisture on it’s own.  So your skin feels hydrated well after application.  Grab it here!
  • Jane Scrivener OO Cream- This cream has a bright golden orange hue from rosehip.  I was so excited to see how this would stack up to other moisturizers.  Well, I was impressed- very impressed.  I’ve now been using this every night since I got it in the mail and can’t stop!  It’s SO hydrating.  Some creams leave your skin hydrated for a minute but this one lasts.  It really sinks into the skin so nicely.  I wake up in the morning and my skin still feels supple and moisturized, but not oily- I repeat not oily.  Can I talk to you about the scent?  I love the scent.  It smells like vanilla- soothing and warm vanilla. It’s really an amazing product!  If you’ve been looking for a cream to truly hydrate your skin in this winter season or any time- this is it.  I can’t stop and won’t stop using it! Grab it here!
  • Beautycounter Creams- I’ve been using the Countermarch Recovery Sleeping Cream at night over my facial oil and I’ve been loving it!  It provides just a little extra moisture.  I’ve also been using it before my makeup and it’s not too greasy.  It might be in the summer but right now my skin needs some extra moisture.  If you feel extra dry or have mature skin I would get the Rejuvenating Cream.  My mom has this cream and loves it!  Her skin is mature and very dry.  She loves a good hydrating cream.  The Rejuvenating Cream is also a bestseller!

Balms

So first what are skincare balms and why might you need one?? Good question. Balms are made generally from oils, butters, and waxes. In my opinion a true balm is waterless. The product is more concentrated when there’s not water and so pure. Balms are multitaskers. They seriously can do it all. From cleanse, hydrate, protect and even offer some serious nutrients. Since balms typically involve a lot of oils, they are using soluble ingredients. Which in the end let’s you put more ingredients into one product. Hello effectiveness! Plus, since they’re waterless usually formulas can include ingredients that are more potent. Balms are especially great in the winter when your skin needs extra protection.  They can help to protect skin from the harsh winds, cold and lock in the moisture.  I apply balms after oils or creams.

Here are some of my natural winter skincare balms-

  • Maya Chia Waterless Wonderbalm- The balm itself is definitely a wonder.  I couldn’t get enough.  From my face, dry hands, feet, even my elbows, this balm seals in all the moisture.  No greasy residue is left behind.  My skin feels so hydrated, but the kind of hydration where you aren’t grabbing for the next moisturizing product.  This is all you need.  If you haven’t found anything that will give you that moisture you crave, then do yourself a favor and grab this balm-your skin will thank you! Grab it here!
  • Leahlani Bless Beauty Balm- Dry skin stands no chance with this baby!  This is a balm and not a cream but performs like a cream in many ways. It’s full of organic shea and cocoa butters, as well as cold pressed oils.  It melts right into your skin and leaves behind a beautiful smell of rosehip oil and no oily residue.  My skin felt so hydrated!  The perfect companion for dry weather in winter, and in the summer when you’ve spent too much time in the sun.  You only need a little dab for the whole face. Grab it here!
  • Kari Gran Essential Balm- The Essential Balm really keeps with Kari Gran’s mission and ethos to only use what you need and to keep things simple.  I love that about their brand.  This balm can be used for so many things.  From a facial moisturizer, to an eye balm, a cleansing balm and even a primer.  Really it’s what you make of it and what works for you.  It has incredible texture and feel.  A little more slip than a traditional balm and almost melts into your hand when applying it. Grab it here!
  • CVS Restorative Skin Balm- This is such a great protective skin balm.  If your skin is cracked, dry and needing protection from the elements, this is your balm.  It is similar to a conventional petroleum jelly product.  It will soften skin, while hydrating at the same time. I even have used this on cuticles, elbows, or anywhere you experience cracked, dry skin. Grab it here!

Also, besides skincare products there are a few other things you can start to incorporate to ensure your skin stays calm and hydrated.

  • Avoid long hot showers that can dry out your skin.
  • Use lukewarm water when your cleansing your skin.
  • Apply moisturizer when skin is still slightly damp to lock in moisture.
  • Stay hydrated- make sure you’re drinking your water.
  • Eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, nuts, seeds or take an omega-3 supplement.
  • Avoid clothing that can irritate your skin like wool.

See any products you need to get?  What helps keep your skin hydrated and balanced during the winter months?

Natural Beauty Valentine Gift Ideas-

True Botanical’s Antioxidant Booster and Serum-

When it comes to giving your skin the best of the best, these two take the cake!  I talk about them a lot but it’s because they work.  Most people ask me all the time what products I recommend for maintaining a youthful complexion.  I know anti-aging is a word that is looked down upon in green beauty.  Which I totally get.  However, no one wants to look older than they are.  I’m sure everyone can agree on this!

These two little numbers deliver antioxidants right to your skin.  Antioxidants are what cancel out the free radicals.  The older we get the less antioxidants are bodies produce.  So we need to help them out a bit.  That’s where the Antioxidant Booster and Cellular Repair Serum come in.  The Antioxidant Booster is in powder form.  Meaning it’s not activated until you mix it with water.  Pretty cool huh?!

That means the freshest, most potent antioxidants are being delivered right to your skin.  The Cellular Repair Serum works to calm inflammation and it’s also low enough in molecular weight to go past the skin’s surface and deliver the nutrients it needs.

It’s the DREAM TEAM!  I haven’t found anything else in natural beauty that works quite like these two- thank me later!

Tata Harper Clarifying Mask

This one’s good!  Ok- they’re all good.  Sorry, it’s going to be hard to choose.  This mask I discovered last year and let’s just say we’ve become fast friends.  I had already tried a lot of Tata Harper and was surprised I hadn’t tried this mask.  I got a tip that I had to try it from another skincare guru- us skincare junkies stick together!

Anyways, I tried and instantly was wondering why I had never done it before.  The name is kind of deceiving.  It is a clarifying mask but not your usual clay masks that dry your skin out- you know what I mean.  Instead it feels more like a peel almost.  Your skin feels smooth, decongested, less red, and pores minimized. I also love the glow it gives me.  You know when you’ve had a hard night, maybe a hard week- this mask is for you.

Honestly, I use it all the time.  It really gives my skin a good detox without drying it out.  Two cheers for that!

Sappho Brow Pomade

Say hello to your new best friend- but really.  Natural looking brows are hard to come by.  That is until you meet Sappho Brow Pomade.  This little jar takes your brows from average to HELLO in a minute.  If you’ve been using a pencil or brow wand try this instead.

I find a pencil and a brow wand are really hard to work with and unless you’re a makeup artist you may end up with cleopatra brows or brow gel all over.  The reason I love Sappho Brow Pomade is because it makes doing your brows SO easy.  All you need is a brow brush and you’re good.  It is easy to use and gives your brows a natural look instead of a drawn on look.

Plus, take it from someone who has dark brows- this one doesn’t show any red.  I wear the color Brown Black.  Get some Sappho and change your life…I mean brows!

Clean Beauty Beautycounter Eyeshadow

Beautycounter eyeshadow’s on full display here. Love these rich, full pigmented shadows!

Beautycounter Eyeshadow Palettes

Do I sound like a broken record yet with these eyeshadow palettes?  Well, at least you know I’m consistent.  These are the BEST eyeshadows I’ve found in clean beauty…I repeat the BEST eyeshadows.  I’ve tried a ton and nothing compares.  The pigment of these shadows are smooth and velvety and rich.  They LAST all day…yep.  I prime my lids with Ilia’s Eye Primer- also my favorite eye primer I’ve used.

I have the Classic Eye Shadow Palette and I just got the Statement Palette and you better believe I’m already planning on getting another one. I’m hooked.  I also love that Beautcounter tests their makeup powders for 10 heavy metals 3 times.  Yes, they are literally third party testing their products 3 times for 10 heavy metals.  I felt that deserved repeating!  Know anyone else doing that in clean beauty?  Me neither.

Get some Beautycounter Eyeshadow Palettes here and be amazed at the quality!

Osmia Serenity Milk Bath

This is definitely a Valentine’s Day Gift.  I don’t think a lot of people are sitting around buying Milk Bath for themselves- but we really should.  Everything Osmia makes is SO good.  I had been wanting to try this for a while and Sarah the founder sent me some- God Bless her!

I really love the smell, the way it makes your skin feel silky smooth and the fact that I forget about everything for 20 minutes.  Yeah, it’s pretty luxurious.  If your significant other wants you to be a little less snippety and a little more zen, then this might be a good start to getting you there. I also can’t leave out their bar soaps- one of my faves- forever.  They smell amazing, they come packaged flawlessly and look beautiful.  Yes, bar soaps can look beautiful.  My fave is coffee mint.

Get your zen on with Osmia’s Milk Bath and car soaps here!

Honest Beauty Mascara

Ok, it kind of goes without saying on this one too.  I know I should be getting paid to promote this but I’m not.  I seriously just think it’s the best of the best and until I find a different mascara in clean beauty I won’t stop talking about this one!

What really would be icing on the cake is if your honey just hit the subscribe and save on Amazon so you don’t have to think about reordering.  Brilliant huh?  I know.  In case you haven’t heard me rave about it, this mascara gives my lashes length, separation, volume and drama.  It’s the whole enchilada!

Clean Beauty Valentine's Day

So many great natural beauty product gift ideas for Valentine’ Day!

Leahlani Honey Love-

I really love Leahlani’s products.  They were some of the first in natural beauty.  They work, aren’t out of this world expensive and the founder is just the sweetest.  She had sent me some Honey Love, their Microdermabrasion Exfoliant and I fell in love all over again with it.

I had tried it before but it had been a while.  It was like rewatching one of your favorite movies and realizing how awesome it was and wondering why you waited 3 years to watch it again.  Yeah, basically how I felt once I tried Honey Love again.  It smells insane and gives me baby soft skin when I’m done using it.  Such a gentle exfoliant.

If you’re needing a new product love affair in your life, grab some Honey Love

Aillea + Organic Bath Co. Body Butter

This is a special collaboration between Aillea and Organic Bath Co.  They sent me some back in the fall and I started using it a couple months ago and I’m addicted.  It feels so good on the skin, has 5 ingredients and smells so good.  It just a good all around basic body butter that gets the job done.

I apply it right out of the shower and my skin is hydrated and happy.  Plus, the citrus scent is invigorating to say the least.

Get your body butter here! They have other scents too, I want them all!

Aila Nail Polish

Who doesn’t want fab looking nails for Valentine’s Day?  Well, Aila is my got too.  I love how the formula goes on so smooth and the color selection is fun and upbeat.  You don’t feel like you’re sacrificing anything when making the switch.  Well, except toxins, but I think you’re ok with that.

I love me some Bodega, Room 212 and Namaste.  But let’s be real, I want ALL the colors!  Don’t forget to get their Better Than Gel Topcoat. It’s rated a 1 on EWG- for a nail polish that’s kind of unheard of and it plain works.  Just like the name suggests it will leave your nails in tip top shape!

Get some Aila Polish here!

Crunchi Brushes

I get so many questions about makeup brushes.  I really love Crunchi’s makeup brushes.  They’re a little newer on the market within the last 6 months and they work so well.  I love how sturdy they feel and how they don’t shed.  They are vegan made with Talkon synthetic fibers.

I have the whole brush set and there isn’t one I don’t use.  Their big powder brush and foundation brush are definite must haves. If you want to take your makeup to the next level, get yourself some luxe brushes!

Check out the Crunchi Brushes here!

Natural beauty Ilia review

Wearing one of my favorite natural beauty lipsticks in Ultra Violet by Ilia.

Ilia Color Block Lipstick in Ultra Violet

Everytime I’ve worn this lipstick color people have asked what are you wearing.  It’s a show stopper for sure.  The perfect winter lipstick color.  Shoot, I would probably wear this all year long.  Their color block lipstick really takes the pigment game to the next level.

It lasts all day and gives my lips some serious playing time in the spotlight.  I love just swiping this on with a pretty neutral, bare face and calling it a day.
