Does Organic Hair Dye Exist?

Does Organic Hair Dye Exist?

Answering the burning question, does organic hair dye exist?  As a hair stylist hair color was the first thing that changed when I moved towards a greener lifestyle years ago.  Not that organic dyes are perfect(not even close), because they aren’t but a better option, especially if you’re breathing in toxic fumes all day as a stylist.  I actually stopped doing hair for a bit until I found a safer option.  I didn’t want to be around conventional color, and I definitely didn’t want to be exposing others to chemicals.

This is a topic we need to discuss because according to research 66 to 77 percent of women dye their hair(Source here)!  Pretty crazy statistics.  Some women might not know what they’re putting on their heads, either way I hope this helps you make an educated decision when it comes to whether you choose to dye your hair or not.

Did you know they pretty much can put whatever they want in hair dyes… the FDA doesn’t regulate them.  So why are mainstream dyes so horrible?  Let me break it down:

organic hair dye

Does organic hair dye exist?

Arylamines(PPD) One of the most dangerous chemicals found in hair dyes.  This chemical has been know to cause bladder cancer, and to cause cancer in experimental animals.  One of the most common names for it is p-phenylenediamine (PPD).  It is even present in natural hair dyes(although the percentage is a lot lower).  It helps the color to last through shampoos.  It gets even more toxic when paired with hydrogen peroxide.  Hydrogen peroxide is what’s used in formulations with the PPD to get it to activate.  It’s interesting to me that the FDA has not approved for this chemical to be tested on the skin, yet it’s nearly impossible to not get it on your skin if you’re coloring your hair…crazy!  Many stylists can end up with dermatitis because of constant exposure to PPD and those getting their hair dyed report eczema and dermatitis.  Other studies link it as a possible carcinogen.  (Source here).

-Ammonia This is the most popular chemical people tend to hear about when faced with mainstream hair dyes. Ammonia is used in hair color to blast the cuticle and deposit the color.  Besides it being toxic, it’s also really damaging to your hair.  Why do you think stylists are always pushing those conditioners like crazy?!  Ammonia is just bad all around.  It’s horrible for the respiratory system, but it also can get into lymph nodes.  Once on a client’s scalp it seeps into the pores, which is then carried into the bloodstream.  Bottom line-avoid it!

-Toluene-2,5-diamine- These are used in permanent hair dyes.  Besides getting headaches, getting dizzy and having allergic reactions.  It also can be so damaging as to cause birth defects and retardation in unborn babies.  (Source here)

-Parabens, Resorcinol, lead acetate are a few other offenders.

*There’s a slew more chemicals, actually there can be up to over 400 chemicals in hair dyes!

The EWG (Environmental Working Group) found that 69% of hair dyes when tested on their Skin Deep data bases may cause cancer.

Here is a link where you can search for common hair dyes to determine their toxicity based on the Skin Deep Data Base by the EWG.

Getting a balayage or foil is a great way to minimize exposure from hair dye.

Yeah, let’s just all take that in for a moment.  Since the FDA doesn’t regulate hair dye, we must!

I want to share what options you have when coloring your hair.  There are options that are less toxic and options that are more toxic.

Temporary dyes- These only last for a couple washes typically and sit on top of your hair.

Semi-permanent- These are stronger then temporary dyes and are used a lot for toning, especially after getting highlights and refreshing the hair.  They do penetrate the hair shaft but aren’t going to last as long as permanent dye.

Permanent-  This is going to go into the cortex of your hair and change the actual color.  It will cover gray.  This type of color is a lot more toxic because it contains more chemicals.  In a study, it showed that there was a 50% increase risk for developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma when using permanent dyes and an 80% higher risk of multiple myeloma. (Source here).

Also, the darker the dye the worst the toxic load.  So if you’re consistently getting your hair dyed black, dark brown, the toxic burden is greater.  (Source here)

organic hair dye

Organic Color Systems has a variety of colors to choose from.

Another thing to consider is when you’re applying dye to your scalp.  The scalp is a rich blood supply and carries chemicals to other parts of the body.  So if you’re constantly getting your hair dyed you may be submitting your whole body to toxins. (Source here)

So you might still be asking yourself…”Does Organic Hair Dye Exist?”

Ok, let’s breakdown that question.  There’s no such thing as “organic” hair dye.  It’s a marketing term used to appeal to the consumer.  When I hear people say that they’re color line is safe and organic I just chuckle to myself.  What they really mean is it probably doesn’t contain ammonia, uses less toxic ingredients and a few more plant based ingredients.  That’s it.

When you look up the word organic in the dictionary you get this:

(of food or farming methods) produced or involving production without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or other artificial agents.

Have you looked on the back of your “organic” hair color at the ingredients?  Because there’s definitely some serious artificial ingredients going on.  People like to use the words organic but organic doesn’t pertain to everything like it does to food or clothes.

I’m going to give some options below, but I want to be clear that these are in no way completely natural, well except henna and Hairprint.  But even some henna dyes have other toxic ingredients added to them.  It’s always important to read your labels.

Hairprint- This is the only completely safe color line available at the moment.  But I wouldn’t really call it a hair color line.  It’s a boxed dye you can use at home but it doesn’t work like you might think a conventional color would.  It uses 8 food grade ingredients to dye the hair.  I’ve personally used it on my mom’s hair several years ago.  Although it’s completely safe it’s also a lot of work.  It took us about 2 1/2 hours from start to finish.  I fully recommend it if you’re just wanting to cover your roots and you have brown to darker hair naturally, but it doesn’t work well with someone who wants to cover their dark roots and have highlights, which was my mom.  It turns your hair to it’s original color.  So if you’re a natural level 5 brown, that’s what the color will look like when done.  In my experience it was even darker though.  It looks very opaque and not see through.  It faded on my mom but still was too harsh for her.  As you get older the rule of thumb with color is add warmth and go lighter.  Darker can make you look older and the skin more sallow.  Hairprint doesn’t work for blondes, redheads or reddish hair.  You can buy it online here!

Henna- Henna is a plant, completely natural.  There are still henna dyes that contain small amounts of PPD(as I mentioned above), so make sure if you are using henna it’s pure.  Typically henna will reveal a reddish brownish color but some companies have added in other plants with henna now to change the color.

Henna is really hard to work with, if your a stylist and have worked with hair then you know what I mean.  Once you put it on your hair, you really can’t get it out.  It’s permanent.  But a different permanent than conventional permanent dye.  I’ve tried stripping henna out before with bleach and what happens is it turns brassy and red.  The problem is once you put it on, you really can’t do much else with your hair.  Nowadays you can achieve different colors using a variety of henna powders.  Check out Morocco Method for more info.

Organic color systems and O&M are a few of the more natural professional color lines available.

Does Organic Hair Dye Exist?

Let’s finish answering the question, does organic hair dye exist?  If you’re using a permanent dye, it’s going to have chemicals.  Unless, you’re doing straight Hairprint or using Henna and even then be careful of the source.  There have been reports that small amounts of PPD(as I mentioned above) have been found in some henna sources.  Color lines that are ammonia-free use Monoethanolamine, or MEA.  It is in the family of Ethanolamines and is used to change the PH of the hair.  This is essential because in order to change the color of the hair, the PH has to be raised for the color to penetrate the cuticle and get to the cortex.  In several of the color lines I mention below, ethanolamines are present in them, since they are ammonia free.  They use the MEA coupled with oils to get the color in the hair shaft.  I really wouldn’t use ammonia nowadays.  It’s horrible for stylists especially as you’re the one breathing it in everyday.

One last thought before I dive into my recommendations.  If you’re wanting to get your hair colored, but are wanting the least possible contact with your skin, here are a few tips.

  • If you have no grey to cover, have the stylist do a balayage technique or foil. By using foils the product doesn’t touch your scalp, so less exposure overall.
  • Also, always go lighter versus darker since the darker you go the more chemicals you’re exposed too.
  • If you’re wanting highlights, I would ask if the salon has ammonia free lighteners.  Getting highlights is a great option, because you’re not touching the scalp and going lighter has less chemicals than going darker.

As you can see, organic hair dye doesn’t exist in the way you would think.  Are there better options, sure.  But are they perfect?  Not even close.  You’re still going to be exposing yourself to toxins.

Below are options I’ve used or had experience with.  In no way am I saying that these are natural!  They may not have one thing, but then they may have another.  However, when doing hair I did notice severally chemically sensitive people were able to get their hair colored using many of these color lines because they do contain some of the lesser evil toxins.  Most conventional color lines are filled with anything and everything- no joke.  I also noticed in my research that professional color lines that use the term “organic or natural” are better as far as ingredients then boxed “natural” options.  They just may not contain as many toxins, not that they are toxin free.  As always, I recommend your stylist do a patch test to see if you’re allergic to the color line before using.

At the end of the day, we all have to make choices when it comes to what toxins we allow into our bodies and which ones we don’t.  Hair dye may be something you love to do.  This post is meant to arm you with the right information when making the decision to continue dying your hair, not to tell you to stop dying your hair.  Maybe instead of doing it every six weeks you wait 12 weeks.  Or maybe you get your hair foiled instead of an all over color.  There may not be a perfect “organic hair dye” alternative to conventional hair dye but there are better options and tips to help lower your overall exposure.

Does organic hair dye exist?

Organic Color Systems-

This is the professional line I used at my salon.  They are made in the UK, which is great because they have higher standards than the U.S.  When I say professional, I mean it’s only sold to those licensed as a cosmetologist.  It is ammonia and resorcinol free.  This was one of the main reasons I went with the line at the time.  It was back in 2013 and this really was the only option when it came to natural hair dye from what I knew.  It still does have PPD in it but has the lowest amount needed in order for it to still be effective.  Instead of Ammonia in the product they use Ethanolamine and Triethanolamine. Full ingredient list here. They don’t smell as bad but as far as toxicity go, are still up there with ammonia. Not really that much better in my mind.  They use Ethanolamine and Triethanolamine in combination with heat for the color to penetrate the hair shaft.  It covers grey and gives beautiful results.  Your hair feels healthy and shiny.  The fading was no different than mainstream color.  I dare say it was actually better than traditional color.

The smell is more of an earthy smell, nothing unpleasant about it at all.  If you’ve smelled ammonia color then you know what I’m talking about.  They offer 64 colors, that can be made permanent or semi-permanent depending on the developer and they offer two lightening powders.  The lightening powders are ammonia, bleach and dust free.   The line is vegan and some of their products do contain a wheat protein, however they claim that they are gluten free.  I would still ask them if you’re sensitive to gluten in any way before applying this color just to be sure.  Some of their colors, as well as the lightening powders have wheat protein in them.  They have a truly semi-permanent line that’s called No Limits.  These dyes will wash out in 6-12 washes but don’t contain PPD, or PTD and you can do them in the convenience of your home.  They are sold as a retail product from the salon.  As I mentioned above, just because this line is “natural”, and has the word “organic” in it does not mean it doesn’t contain toxins.  When I used it, I still wore gloves.  Although it is better in some ways than standard hair dyes, it still is hair dye at the end of the day.  To find a stylist using OCS, please e-mail them at [email protected]

O&M-

This is another professional line, meaning it’s only sold to professional stylists.  O&M stands for Original Mineral.  I used it and here and there in my salon.  It is newer and made in Australia.  It is also a professional line.  O&M is ammonia, resorcinol and PPD free.  But still contains a host of other toxic chemicals instead of PPD like p-aminophenol, 4-Chlororesorcinol, Toluene-2,5-Diamine Sulfate and 2, 4 Diaminophenoxyethanol hcl. Here is a full ingredient list here.

The smell of O&M is more of cleaning agent smell.  I’m not a fan to be honest.  It’s not overly strong or burning like ammonia at all but it isn’t as pleasant as OCS.  It does not require heat to penetrate the hair shaft like Organic Color Systems does, which I loved.  They also have a very creamy consistency.  The hair felt great after using the product.  They are a lot larger than OCS in terms of colors, they offer 99.  They come in a cream form for permanent and liquid for semi-permanent.  The results I got from using O&M were great.  It covered grey well.  The hair shined and lasted through shampoos also.  If you’re a stylist and you’re wanting to try out O&M, check out the website simplyorganicbeauty.com.  You will have to get accepted as a stylist in order to purchase products.  Also, if you’re not a stylist but want to find a stylist that uses O&M, call their number (888)213-4744 and then push the number 4 to find a salon near you that uses it.  You can also email them here.

Oway-

This is another professional line that only a stylist can carry.  I have to say this line I’ve been the most impressed with.  I’ve only used them a handful of times.  First they’re made in Italy.  At the time when I had my salon it wasn’t available otherwise I would have definitely used it.  They’re ammonia free and offer 89 colors which is a decent selection.  They actually have 6 legit natural ingredients in their hair color, which is rare to find.  They really push the words biodynamic, natural and organic.  Obviously, if you’ve been reading through this post you know that it’s probably a marketing term, which it is.  But I am shocked how they do really have a high standard when it comes to being more eco-friendly all around.  You don’t have to sit under heat to process the color, do a ton of steps to cover grays which is nice too.  Organic Color Systems you always have to use so many steps in order to cover the grays, plus use heat.  If you’re a stylist and reading this definitely use a scale, it’s essential for good results with this color line.  I was impressed with how I didn’t have to pack on the color with this line too.  With Organic Color Systems I always felt like I needed more, especially when covering gray hair. Obviously, it’s still not completely natural but I would say as far as being a stylist and having ease of use, consistent results and doesn’t smell horrible, it’s definitely a better option.

I wanted to also mention how much I loved Oway’s Hbleach lightener!  It’s the best lightener I’ve ever used.  It actually makes the hair feel better after using…I know crazy.  It’s ammonia free and contains lavender essential oil and kukui butter.  It’s so creamy.  If you’re a stylist and you’re wanting to try out Oway, check out the website simplyorganicbeauty.com.  You will have to get accepted as a stylist in order to purchase products.  Also, if you’re not a stylist but want to find a stylist that uses Oway, call their number (888)213-4744 and then push the number 4 to find a salon near you that uses it.  You can also email them here.

Below are a list of ingredients found in “natural” boxed hair dye.  They aren’t pretty.  It would be different using it if it only had a couple toxic ingredients but when the list is this long, it makes you think twice before using it. They may remove some of the heavy offenders when it comes to conventional dye but they are far from safe.  If there is a score next to the ingredient list it’s the score from EWG’s Skin Deep Data Base.

  • PEG’s(polyethylene glycols)- Petroleum based enhancers.  Usually contaminated with, heavy metals, Ethylene oxide(used in World War 1 nerve gas) and 1,4 dioxane-(a carcinogen) and make it easier for ingredients to absorb into your skin/scalp.  Not something you want in your products if there are a list of other toxic ingredients.  The EWG Skin Deep Data Base rates this as a 1 but that’s not accurate.  They aren’t looking at the whole makeup of the ingredient.  Some brands can try and remove these impurities but it would be hard to find that out.
  • Mineral Oil- Made from petroleum. Can be contaminated.  It can even be a possible carcinogen. (Source here)
  • Propylene Glycol- Very similar to (PEG’s- polyethylene glycols), it also makes it easier for ingredients to penetrate the skin and can be a skin irritant.
  • Parfum/Fragrance- Can cause phototoxic reactions and can be photoallergic.  Skin irritant, and has been known as a neuro-toxin, hormone disruptor and an allergen.
  • p-Phenylenediamine- Score of 7- allergies and immunotoxicity as well as cancer.
  • Ethanolamine- Score of 5-6, Allergies and Immunotoxicity
  • 4-Chlororesorcinol- Score of 6- allergies and Immunotoxicity, and cancer.
  • 2-Methylresorcinol- Allergies and immunotoxicity.
  • 2-Amino-4-Hydroxyethylaminoanisole Sulfate- Score of 3 but it did have a reference for cancer.
  • m-Aminophenol- Score of 5, for allergies and immunotoxicity and cancer.
  • N-Phenyl-p-Phenylenediamine Sulfate- Score of 7, allergies and immunotoxicity, cancer.

As you can see, these aren’t ingredients you want going on your head every 6 weeks!  If you want to continue dying your hair, then here are some of the natural boxed hair dye options, however just remember they are not completely natural.  I will say that I was impressed with Madison Reed’s ingredient list.  Still totally not squeaky clean at all, but compared to the other boxed dyes it wasn’t as crazy.  Madison Reed’s are also PPD free, for those that are allergic or sensitive to PPD.  But know that doesn’t mean the ingredient they use instead, para-toulenediamene sulfate isn’t nontoxic.  It has it’s own set of side effects too.

It’s clear that organic hair dye does not exist except in the form of Hairprint that I mentioned earlier, however, Hairprint doesn’t work for everyone and some people just don’t want to spend that much time doing their hair every 6 weeks, or they have red hair, want highlights, etc.

Mineral Fusion’s Grey Root Concealer-

Does organic hair dye exist?  Well, since we know it doesn’t I’ve found the next best thing- a root concealer!  This isn’t actually an all over color for your hair but for just your roots.  You use it when you are trying to hide those grey hairs.  It really does blend well and covers the grey!  It just washes out after shampooing.  You use it like you would mascara.  Now this isn’t by any means completely natural.  It rates a 5 on the Think Dirty app.  However, this is definitely a better alternative to dying hair in my opinion.  You are giving yourself a lot less of a toxic load.  It is a lot better than mainstream root concealers too.  Plus, if it can help you stretch getting your hair dyed then it’s worth it.

I’m still waiting for the day when organic hair dye does exist but until then, I’ve rounded out some of my top tips and what I do when getting my hair dyed in my free download.

This will outline:

  • Where to find a natural stylist/salon
  • What to ask a salon to see if they are really who they say they are
  • What to tell your stylists for least exposure
  • What I do when visiting the salon.
  • I even walk you through what to do when you don’t have access to an organic salon.

Ok, that’s my huge spill on does organic hair dye exist!  If you have any questions, feel free to leave me a comment, or e-mail me.  Also, if you’ve come across other brands that you like please let me know.  I’m always trying out new ones and will be updating this periodically as I do.

Clove And Hallow’s Skin Tint Foundation Review

Clove And Hallow’s Skin Tint Foundation Review

I’m so excited to share with you Clove and Hallow’s Skin Tint Foundation Review.  This is their most requested product!  Not surprised.  Foundation can be hard to find in general.  There are so many factors to consider.  I’ve tried a handful of Clove and Hallow Products and I’m always impressed!

Not only are their products affordable but also cruelty free, and vegan.  All the products are made in the USA and follow the EU’s stringent standards.  They have a Clean Fifteen guarantee:

“No cheap fillers or unnecessary fluff. Just the good stuff, delivered in 15 or fewer ingredients per base formula.”

The founder of Clove and Hallow Sarah Biggers went through her own personal health journey that led her to creating Clove and Hallow.  She went through depression, and panic attacks so severe she was bedridden.  She quickly realized after consulting with a naturopath the importance of what we put in our bodies.  Once she went down that road she then wondered what was also in the products she was recommending to clients, friends and family members as a makeup artist.

Clove and Hallow Review

Meet Clove and Hallow’s newest addition: Liquid Skin Tint!

After looking into many natural beauty brands she quickly realized she couldn’t find the products she was looking for.  She wanted performance but also a product that was affordable.  Soon she realized she needed to create this line she dreamt up and Clove and Hallow was born.

I love that each Clove and Hallow product serves a purpose.  There aren’t a ton of filler products in their line.

One of the products that Clove and Hallow continually was asked about was a foundation.  Something that would hit all the marks.  From texture, to shades and performance.  That’s when Clove and Hallow’s Liquid Skin Tint was born!

This foundation is unlike any other I’ve tried.

Clove and Hallow review

Left side of photo I’m wearing Clove and Hallow Liquid Skin Tint in 04, the right side I’m wearing nothing.

Here are some unique characteristics of the formula:

  • It’s lightweight
  • Comes in 12 shades(they even did a focus group with 20 women and all were able to find a shade for their skin type)
  • Provides a demi-matte finish
  • Price Point is really affordable at $26
  • Feels creamy to the touch but dries matte

A lot of clean beauty foundations are known for their dewiness.  They add oils to foundations to really give that dewy skin look.  However, it’s hard to get rid of that dewiness once you have it on your skin.

With Clove and Hallow’s Liquid Skin Tint you’re able to add oils of your choice, or a liquid highlighter to bring out the luminosity if you like.  Really making it a truly versatile product all around.

Clove and Hallow Liquid Skin Tint

These are some of the color swatches they offer of the Clove and Hallow Liquid Skin Tint.

I especially love the Liquid Skin Tint for the summer months when humidity is on the rise and often you want to eliminate any shine from the skin.  This makes it so easy to create that matte effect on the skin without adding more shine to the skin.

I tried several shades: 03, 04, and 05.  04 was a perfect match for my skin!

This is how I’ve been wearing it.  I apply a facial moisturizer first, then wait a minute or two and then apply the foundation with my fingertips.  I’ve tried using a kabuki brush and my fingers to blend the formula and I prefer my fingers.  It helps to warm up the product slightly I’ve noticed.

Wearing a full face of Clove and Hallow’s Liquid Skin Tint in 04.

This would be ideal as I mentioned for use in the summer but also for those with oily skin types that want to cut down on shine in general.  It provides a medium coverage overall.  Nothing too heavy, still feels lightweight on the skin.

I’ve even mixed the Liquid Skin Tint with Clove and Hallow’s Hydraglow and love the result!  It gives some great dewiness and glow to the skin.  Especially great if you are a little older and want more dewiness in the skin or your skin tends to be on the dry side.

Odacite’s new Blue Aura Cleansing Water is so good!

Odacite Blue Aura Cleansing Water-

This is Odacite’s newest product and I was so jazzed to try it!  It’s like a micellar water but even more effective.  It was created to make cleansing super easy and effective.  It’s a no rinse cleanser.  So you apply some on a cotton round, wipe all over face to clean and that’s it.  For me personally I like to use it as a second cleanse and tone.  So essentially after I cleanse my skin I love wiping my skin with this cleansing water.  It acts not only as a second cleanse but also my toner and mist.

It really makes my skin feel extra clean especially with the extra heat as the summer months come.  It is filled with Ayurvedic herbs like Holy Basil, Neem, and  Tumeric.  I LOVE it particularly in the mornings.  I don’t wash my face with a heavy duty cleanser in the mornings but I love to get the night grime off and wake it up with a toner.  This is perfect!  It wakes my skin up but also makes it feel clean and ready for the day.  Definitely a unique product for clean beauty!  Get it here!

Primally Pure’s Baby Oil-

I know it might seem weird to put a baby oil in here but I couldn’t not!  It’s been hard to find a clean baby oil that would be safe for my whole body and growing belly as I’m pregnant but I found one.  Primally Pure’s Baby Oil is not only safe for moms to be but also for baby!  I rub this all over my body after showering and my belly too.  I love knowing what I’m putting on my body is safe and that I’m helping prevent the beloved stretch marks from forming.

Plus, it’s in glass which I love!  I always get weirded out when oils are in plastic containers.  It makes me think they’re soaking up all the plastics!  They also have a baby balm too that I rub on my belly as well.  Check out the baby oil here!

This Countersun Tinted Mineral Sunscreen from Beautycounter is one of my fave products for summer!

Beautycounter Countersun Tinted Mineral Sunscreen-

This has changed my life- no joke.  I did a whole IGTV video all about it here.  You know how self tanners take a good 4-6 hours to process?  I mean who has time for that right?!  With this new tinted mineral sunscreen it literally acts like a self tanner and sunscreen in one.  You apply it to your skin just like you would sunscreen.  But get this…it’s tinted so you not only see exactly where you are applying it but also get a tan in seconds.  Plus, it gives you sun protection of SPF 30.  Best of the both worlds!

I’ve been applying this to my face as foundation and can’t get enough.  I look like I have a nice glow and I’ve got my face protected from the sun.  I’m addicted!  If you haven’t snagged a bottle- do it here!

This shampoo is so unique but has stolen my heart!

GOOP Himalayan Salt Scalp Scrub Shampoo-

Whoah…this shampoo is unlike anything I’ve used.  First it comes in a round jar- not a bottle.  I didn’t even realize it was shampoo at first but then I read the label and was very intrigued.  Of course I had to get it!  It’s not even a liquid in texture but feels more like a facial exfoliant in texture.  It has tiny pink Himalayan salt crystals in it too. Plus, it has cold-pressed moringa oil, and rose hip oil.  I literally just thought how it this going to clean my hair?

But it did!  And so well.  You want to make sure your hair is completely damp and then apply some of the product onto hair and massage in.  It forms a great lather.  Your hair and scalp feels squeaky clean afterwards.  It smells minty fresh with peppermint, orange and geranium.  I love it!  It really is such a revolutionary product.  Plus, how awesome for travel?!  You wouldn’t even have to put it in your checked bag.  Just throw it in your carryon.  Get it here!

Natural Deodorant-

So the sun is out, which also means the sweat comes!  Warm sunny days are awesome but smelling is not.  I finally found a deodorant that I absolutely am crazy about, and guess what?!  So is my hubs!

Primally Pure Deodorants take the cake when it comes to formula and effectiveness.  They go on so smooth, keep me fresh all day long and give me no irritation.  My hubs loves the Charcoal Deodorant and I love the Blue Tansy.  Stop smelling and get them already!

So glad I can have clean skincare but also effective skincare when I’m pregnant.

True Botanical’s Calm Oil Pure Radiance Oil, Vitamin C Booster and Nutrient Mist-

Once I found out I was pregnant I was on a hunt for the best natural skincare that not only was safe but also effective.  I didn’t want to just start slathering coconut oil on my face since I was expecting- and all the mamas to be said amen!  I wanted my products to still be working and giving me the antioxidants my skin needs.  In comes True Botanical’s!

I love that they have a pregnancy safe line that they have vetted for safety but also effectiveness.  I use their Calm Pure Radiance Oil as not only a moisturizer but also to help smooth fine lines and combat redness.  I tend to get even more redness when I’m pregnant. I also love their Nutrient Mist.  It smells so good, but not overly potent. I find I’m sensitive to scents when pregnant and this is the perfect subtle scent.  I spray this on my skin after cleansing before oils.  I also use their Vitamin C Booster.  A powerful combination of Vitamin C powder that isn’t activated until you add water.  I mix it with my Nutrient Mist and then apply to my skin.  I follow with Calm Pure Radiance Oil.  I love knowing my skin is getting active antioxidants even when I’m pregnant.

If you’ve been looking for safe skincare that still packs a punch when pregnant then I would recommend True Botanical’s!  I love them even when I’m not pregnant but so great knowing I can still use them when I am.  Get their products here!  Also, check out my full True Botanical’s review here.

Dry Brushing-

I’ve dry brushed for years but I’ve really gotten more into it since being pregnant.  It can help increase blood flow and be great if you tend to swell.  Some even say it can help prevent stretch marks.  I dry brush before I shower.  I also love it for the added exfoliation.  It really gets my skin glowing more than anything!  I tend to swell in my pregnancies and didn’t dry brush with my last two and so this has been a game changer.  It also just wakes up my whole body too in the mornings.  Really getting my system moving.  If you haven’t tried it yet, do it!  Such a good way to detox your body.

I have two different dry brushes.  This one and this onethis one does shed from time to time.  I like them both.  The longer handle is nice for reaching my back.  This is also a great video of dry brushing if you’ve never done it before!

Natural Nighttime Skincare Routine

Natural Nighttime Skincare Routine

So excited to share with you my Natural Nighttime Skincare Routine.  I find people often aren’t sure what a beauty routine is or where to even start.  Or perhaps they think they have a routine, yet instead it looks a little more chaotic.  In this post, I want to help you create a nighttime beauty routine that you not only love but that works for you.  I will also be sharing some of my staples in my beauty routine and how they create the base of it.  If it’s one thing I’ve learned since being in the beauty industry for over 14 years it’s that a beauty routine should not be ignored.

Welcome to the #betterforyoucrew! I’ve teamed up with my girls Lisa from This Organic Girl, Sarah from Whoorl, Kate from Root & Revel, Caroline from Olive You Whole and Kristina from Love & Zest to highlight green, yet effective food, beauty and lifestyle products that are rocking our natural mama worlds. This series will publish the last week of every month so check back for the latest. You can also search #betterforyoucrew on our blogs and Instagram to access the entire series. Wanna join in? Tag #betterforyoucrew on social with your picks. We want to see your faves too!  For last month’s post on Favorite kitchen gadgets- check it out here.

Step 1- Identify What You Need

In essence, the goal is to find the products that speak to you, work with you and that you love.  The end result is creating a nighttime  beauty routine that is not only functional but one you enjoy.

For example, some people aren’t into having 7 skincare products.  They just want 3 that really work.  On the other hand, some love their skincare routine and couldn’t go without one of their beloved products.

Natural Nighttime routine

Best Natural and Organic Night time Skincare Routine

The point?  Do you!  Create a nighttime beauty routine that feels right for you, not someone else.  After all, I truly believe that’s what holds up many people in having a routine at all.  They feel overwhelmed and don’t know where to start.  Know what you need, find it and use it.  Your body will thank you and so will your subconscious as you take a little time each day just for you.

Step 2- Find Your Favorites & Staples

If you’re wondering how to find those products think about what you always use everyday or what you find you want to use but might not have.  Maybe you have really dry skin and to not have a moisturizer would be the end of the world for you.  Find what you need and works for you.

Step 3- Commit To Your Routine

Once you know what you need and find the products you love, then it’s time to commit to your routine.  Often people complain about beauty results because they aren’t consistent with their routine.  The point of finding products you need and love is your more likely to stick with them, because you love using them and they make you feel good.

When you’re consistent with your routine, your skin will show it.

Night Routine-

My nighttime routine is all about restoring and relaxing.  At night I really like to take more time and savor my beauty routine.  It may sound funny but for me taking 10 minutes for myself at night really helps me mentally process the day and relaxes me.  Especially as a mom it’s easy to go throughout the day not really doing anything for yourself. This little act really creates a space to ease my mind.  I find myself looking forward to it every night.  Restoring my skin is an important part of my night routine.  After being in the elements during the day I like to give it the nutrients it needs to help restore it. That being said, morning and nighttime skincare routines look different usually.  I’m going to give a brief explanation of products you could use for your morning or nighttime skincare to get you familiar with your options.

Cleansers- A cleanser is meant to be the first step in your skincare routine.  It helps to get rid of dirt, debris and get rid of makeup from the day.  Of course there are many cleansers to choose from depending on your skin type. Some people like to double cleanse, others not so much. Whatever method or cleanser you choose just make sure that it adequately cleans your skin and you’re not left with any residue. I have a full blog post with all my favorites. Check it out!

Toner/Hydrosol- These terms are used interchangeably to describe a mist that you spray over your skin post cleansing.  A true hydrosol contains plant actives.  Some people will spray the mist directly on their skin and press in with their hands, others will spray on a cotton round and apply it in on their skin.  Either way, a toner or hydrosol helps to calm skin, hydrate, keep pores open for serums/oil and specific skin treatments.  A toner helps to also get rid of any oil or bits left from the cleanser, as well as balance the ph of skin.

Treatments-  Treatments for the skin can range from anti-aging treatments, redness reducing treatments, hyper pigmentation targeting, and acne treatments.  Theses are going to be filled with active ingredients that are really going to perform.  Think antioxidants! It really depends on what result you’re looking for in your skin.  These aren’t going to necessarily hydrate your skin.  Most are made out of water or aloe, some contain oil, but few.  They penetrate the skin quickly and feel almost like a gel.  They absorb into your skin, opposed to creams that generally sit on top of your skin.  The absorption happens easier because serums are smaller in molecular size and easier to penetrate the skin and deliver nutrients.  Serums happen after toning or hydrosol when skin’s pores are still open.  I have a full blog post on all my favorite serums for the skin here!

Oils- After a serum, now it’s time for an oil.  There has been a resurgence of oils in the last 5 years.  People used to be afraid of them, but now they are learning how hydrating and restorative they can be for the skin.  Just remember not every oil is created equal.  Some are comedogenic and can actually clog your pores or cause you to breakout.  For example, coconut oil is comedogenic and can actually cause many people to breakout.  If you’re not sure about the comedogenic rating look it up or ask the formulator. Oils are very hydrating and can keep the moisture intact for a long time.  A great pick for those with dry skin.

Skin Creams/Lotions- Many people aren’t sure what the difference is between an oil, a cream and a lotion.  Allow me to explain.  An oil is just that- just an oil- nothing added.  A cream has a mix of water and oil, but more oil than water and then a lotion is also a mixture of water and oil but the higher percentage is water- which makes it thinner.  Creams are great at protecting the skin, especially after applying an oil and if you need additional moisture.  I like doing them at night.  A lotion is good for in the morning when you want some hydration but don’t want to be too greasy from an oil.

Balms- Balms are another product that really has been popping up all over in the skincare industry over the last two years.  Balms are primarily used for intense hydration and protection.  In the winter they are great for protecting skin from wind and cold.  They are more concentrated than a lotion or cream.  A lot of formulators like them because they are usually waterless and therefore don’t need preservatives to keep them fresh.  A little goes a long way with a balm- so you don’t need as much as you would with a lotion or cream.

Eye Cream/Oil- Eye products come in a variety of formulas.  From creams to oils and even some that are more like a serum.  I prefer an oil or serum myself because I suffer from milia. Tiny hard white cysts under the skin.  They can form when keratin gets trapped under the skin.  I try and stay away from heavy products for the eyes as I’ve noticed they can lead to more.  If your under eye area is really dry then you would want to opt for a heavier eye cream or nourishing oil.  Some eye oils or serums I’ve found to be oilier than others.  I have a full blog post coming on my faves that I’ve been working on forever!  I like mine to absorb fairly quickly too.

Exfoliants- Exfoliants are so crucial to effective skincare- can’t recommend them enough!  If your skin is dead on top, whatever products you put on top of your skin aren’t going to be able to penetrate and perform.  There are many different types of exfoliants.  From mechanical, enzyme and chemical exfoliants.  Mechanical exfoliants use some sort of manual grain or seeds to manually remove the dead skin.  Enzyme exfoliants is similar to chemical exfoliation but much gentler.  It breaks down the glue that holds together dead skin.  It uses active ingredients like papain, papaya and pineapple to slough off the dead skin. Enzyme exfoliation is great for someone with sensitive skin.  There’s no actual manual exfoliant involved.  Another type is chemical exfoliation.  Chemical exfoliation is stronger than enzyme exfoliation.  It uses Alpha Hydroxy Acids(AHA’s) or Beta Hydroxy Acids(BHA’s).  AHA’s are not as strong as BHA’s.  A lot of peels are considered chemical exfoliants.  Chemical exfoliants are great for those with oily skin and acne.

Masks- Love a good mask!  Masks are like giving your skin a good shot of  nutrients at once.  Similar to drinking a really nutrient dense green juice for your body.  There are so many benefits to masking.  From detoxification, unclog pores, glowing skin, minimizing redness, hydration- the list goes on!  It’s great to have different masks for different seasons of life too.  In the winter you may need a hydrating mask more.  In the summer, a detoxification mask- each season can bring a new set of skincare challenges.  Some masks are quick and are just meant to give your skin a glow in 5 minutes before a big event or date.

Ok, now that you’ve just been schooled on all skincare products, let’s break down what you actually need in your skincare routine.

nighttime skincare routine

Establish your nighttime skincare routine using products you love.

So it really depends on what you want your outcome to be.  Do you want your skin to just feel clean, and hydrated?  Maybe you’re not into all the extras but just want a nighttime skincare routine that meets the basic needs and that’s it.  Or maybe you want to fade hyper pigmentation, minimize redness and increase collagen- ok then you’re probably going to need a few more products!

Think about your end goal when it comes to your skin and that will help guide you to the products you need.

  • Cleanse- I cleanse my skin with one cleanser typically.  I used to oil cleanse, but I’ve found I really love a cleanser that does it all in one step and that I can remove easily with just water and not a washcloth.  A couple of my favorite cleansers in green beauty that do that are- OSEA Ocean Cleanser, an amazing cleanser that leaves my skin feeling balanced, not stripped, removes all my makeup and rinses off easily with water.  I also love Marie Veronique’s Cleansing Oil. It acts like an oil cleanser but emulsifies(suds up) ever so slightly.  It’s great!  It also removes all my eye makeup and everything easily and rinses off with water.
  • Toner/Hydrosol- I use the same toner for my skin at night that I do in the morning generally.  Unless I’m testing out several at once.  My top pick would be Maya Chia’s the Optimist!
  • Exfoliant- Next I will exfoliate if I need too.  I generally exfoliate twice a week.  People can over exfoliate, creating disruptions to their natural ph.  I love Josh Rosebrook’s Active Enzyme Exfoliant, and Laurel’s Honey Berry Enzyme Mask.  The Active Enzyme Exfoliant includes manual exfoliants using walnut shells and it incorporates enzymes as well. The Honey Berry Enzyme Mask is great for those with sensitive skin as it uses enzymes to exfoliate.
  • Mask- I generally mask two to three times per week.  If it’s a day for a mask I’ll do it after toning or exfoliating.  My mask varies depending on what my skin needs.  For a good all around mask, I recommend Leahlani Mermaid Mask, for lightening and detoxification I recommend Mahalo’s The Bean Antioxidant Mask, for skin problems I love May Linstrom’s The Problem Solver Mask.  For a full review of my favorite masks- check out my blog post here.
  • Treatment/Serum- Next I will apply a treatment or serum.  For me this is usually my True Botanical’s Cellular Repair Serum and Antioxidant Booster.  These two have literally helped change my skin and given me tangible results!  The Cellular Repair Serum goes past the outer most layer of the skin to really get in and provide all the nutrients the skin needs.  The Antioxidant Booster is a powder and isn’t activated until you mix it with a liquid.  I love this because then you are getting the most potent and active ingredients right away!  Most antioxidant treatments are liquid and are not as effective since they’ve already been activated.  I apply my Cellular Repair Serum first.  Then I mix my Antioxidant Booster with my oil.  This helps the Antioxidant Booster to absorb better into the skin, compared to mixing it with the Cellular Repair Serum.
  • Oil- Now time for an oil!  I have been using True Botanical’s Calm Serum since being pregnant, it is completely pregnancy safe.
  • Eye Cream/Serum- Next I apply my eye serum or eye cream.  I’ve been using Odacite’s B+S Eye Serum for a while and love it!  It isn’t super oily, absorbs nicely and my eyes look refreshed and revived in the morning.  Can’t recommend it enough.
  • Lips- Ok, last but not least I apply Odacite’s Lip Serum.  I love this lip serum!  It helps to hydrate, minimize fine lines on the lips and plump.  I love applying as my last step in my skincare routine.  My lip’s nightly nightcap!

That sums up my nighttime skincare routine!  Now it’s time to create your own.  I’ve created this free download for you to be able to see what products work for different skin types.  I have something for sensitive, dry/normal, and combination/oily.  Click the photo below to download!

Summer Skincare Essentials

Summer Skincare Essentials

Time for some summer skincare essentials to be added to your routine.  It’s that time of year where the sun comes out all day and the season requires a few different things compared to the last when it comes to skincare.

After all you can either go through summer looking weathered and parched or fresh faced and glowing.  I don’t know about you but I definitely want the latter.

In the winter skin needs lot of extra moisture and protection.  Summer you still need moisture, but it’s about finding balance, investing in some good UV protection and products that won’t melt off your face- yes I’m looking at you humidity.

I wanted to give you the run down on my summer skincare essentials.  Things you’ll want in your skincare routine all summer long.  From my favorite serums, exfoliant, sunscreen, after sun care and more- sister I’ve got your back!

And guess what?  I’ve teamed up with my favorite brands to giveaway some of my favorite products!  Yep, giving away basically all the product.  So make sure you’re following along on Instagram here, where all the magic will be happening!

Besides having the right products it’s also important to understand how important it is to feed your body with the right nutrients.  I wanted to shed light on a few key things that are important to incorporate into your diet and daily regimen to keep your skin looking amazing even in the summer!

FEED YOUR BODY:

  • Drink water- I know simple but when our skin is dehydrated it isn’t pretty.  Drink half your body weight in water and you’ll be sure to stay hydrated inside and out.
  • Take a Vitamin C supplement- it’s shown that taking an oral Vitamin C supplement has shown to protect your skin from harmful rays. I like this Vitamin C!
  • Eat your antioxidants- eating a diet rich in fresh fruits, and veggies has shown to help keep your skin looking great while protecting it from the sun.  Antioxidants are your best friends when it comes to skincare!
  • Get Your Omega 3’s- Whether you eat them with good wild caught fresh fish like salmon or take a supplement.  Getting your Omega 3’s is essential in keeping your skin hydrated and plump. Remember not fish oil supplements are created equally.  You want to make sure your fish oil is pure.  I like this Fish Oil here!

Ok, let’s dive into my recommendations for summer skincare essentials!

Summer Skincare Essentials

These are skincare staples in the summer!

Summer Skincare Essentials

EXFOLIANT- Exfoliating is key when keeping your skin looking good all summer long.  If your skin is flaky and the top layer is dead skin, then whatever you put on your skin is just going to sit on top of it and not penetrate.  Not what we want!  Especially when you have a spendy serum or oil you’re applying.

RECOMMENDATION:

Josh Rosebrook Exfoliant- My go too exfoliant in green beauty! This exfoliator uses a mechanical exfoliant of walnut shells, and also an enzyme exfoliant. Not only does my skin feel smooth after but it looks brighter!  It is chockfull of plant oils and active honey- a serious treat for the skin.  I’ve tried to pinpoint the smell and I’ve come to the conclusion it smells like black licorice to me-which I love or used too…haha.

So how do I use this bad boy?  I mist my skin first with a toner(love this one), per instructions to open up pores, then I massage a small nickel size amount all over my face.  Then I let it set for 15 minutes, I found that was my sweet spot.  But you can do it up to an hour.  This is another must have!  If you’ve been looking for an exfoliant that leaves your skin feeling smooth but also looking bright-this is it.  Get it here!

SERUM- You want a serum that is going to do some work for you especially at night.  A serum is meant to target specific concerns of the skin and is usually a mixture of water, and ingredients like antioxidants, vitamins, etc.  The molecule structure is smaller, so it’s able to penetrate the skin and do the work, repairing, replenishing and so on. I like to think of a serum as the real game changer when it comes to your skincare routine.  It isn’t filled with a lot of extras, instead it’s loaded with all the potent, skin changing ingredients.  Usually a serum is the most expensive product of a skincare line because it’s the most activated.

RECOMMENDATION:

Alphyn Beauty PlantGenius Survival Serum- This Serum is unlike anything I’ve used.  It’s a brightening and nourishing serum in one.  Perfect for summer.  It gives your skin all day radiance and glow.  It’s also filled with a ton of antioxidants!   From Vitamin C, bearberry leaf and licorice root extract.  Not too mention it’s filled with gentle exfoliants to promote cell turnover. It’s basically a skin’s dream!

I love how it has an iridescent effect.  My skin looks so dewy and glowing all day long.  I use it am and pm.  I apply it on misted skin and then apply my moisturizer.  You can even add a little on top of your makeup for an extra glow.  I’m hooked on this!  Say hello to your new summer serum.  Get it here!

FACIAL ROLLER- Summers are for late nights, eating things you probably shouldn’t have, anyone else hand raised?  In comes the Rose Quartz Roller.  When it comes to minimizing puffiness and water retention there’s nothing better than this Rose Quartz Roller.  Giving your skin some serious TLC.  Rolling your skin helps clear away toxins and improve circulation, evens skin tone, tightens skin and helps to minimize skin stress which causes wrinkles and fine line.

RECOMMENDATION:

Jade or Rose facial roller-  Once you start using a facial roller you won’t look back.  The amount of congestion and fluid it releases is amazing. You will feel an overall lightness after using one.  Muscles will be more relaxed and at ease.  I use mine in the morning and at night.  It’s a little spa date for me in my own bathroom.

I follow different charts for rolling techniques.  Each roller comes with instructions.  I apply an oil first and then use my roller.  My skin looks more awake, fresh and less puffy- you’ll become addicted!  Get your roller here!

BODY BUTTER- This is a must for skin that’s been in the sun all day long!  Not only does it help seal in moisture but helps keep your skin from flaking.  It also provides a protective barrier.

RECOMMENDATION

Aillea + Organic Bath Co. Citrus Lemongrass Body Butter-  This fabulous collaboration is between Organic Bath Co. and Aillea- sounds like a match made in green beauty heaven. The scent of citrus and lemongrass literally wakes me up and feels so refreshing.  I apply it after I shower and my skin feels so hydrated.  It is a whipped body butter and turns into a nice oil when applied to the skin.  I love that it comes in a glass jar.  Plus, there are only 5 ingredients and they’re all organic!  Get the Body Butter here!

Summer Skincare Essentials

Maya Chia is one of my favorite natural skincare brands!

MOISTURE/RESURFACING MASK- This is key for keeping your skin looking hydrated and revived.  Skin takes a beating when it’s out in the sun all day long.  It’s important to replenish it with key nutrients and vitamins.  This helps to keep it looking happy and not dry and parched.  I love doing a moisture mask after a long day in the sun.

RECOMMENDATION:

Maya Chia’s Refresh Mint Mask- This is their newest product and one I’ve fallen hard for.  It’s a resurfacing moisture mask.  It takes a drab complexion and instantly awakens it and gives it a glow.  If your skin is feeling less than, this mask is for you.  It uses 4 different types of acids, enzymes, moisturizers to help slough off dead skin cells, hydrate and give you your glow back.  A little magic potion in a bottle.  I apply it to dry clean skin.  Once applied I let it sit on my skin until its dry.  Then rinse off with warm water.  My skin is left with a glow, and smoothness that makes your skin look radiant!  I’m so excited to keep using it and see my skin improve overtime. Get it here!

FACIAL OIL- This is a must in the summer.  Not only is skin feeling dry from the elements and sun but it also needs key nutrients to nourish what’s been taken.  I love an oil that’s a little richer and also provides some antioxidant benefits too. A two fold approach to keeping skin looking in tip top shape.

RECOMMENDATION:

Maya Chia’s Pure Supercritical Chia Oil-  Especially great for those with dry skin that can’t quite get hydrated.  It also works amazing on fine lines.  Although it is heavier, it still absorbs so well.  Your skin feels plump and soft.  Even a dry patch around my nose didn’t stand a chance with this oil.  It calmed even my normal redness around my t-zone I get.  A rich, extremely hydrating oil, that absorbs quickly, doesn’t feel greasy, and makes you look younger…what are you waiting for?!  This is great for even the most sensitive skin.  I apply it after my serum morning and night.  Get your Pure Supercritical Omega-3 Chia Oil here!

HYDRATING MIST- A hydrating mist is essential for summer skin.  Skin quickly can get parched and a mist not only helps to restore moisture but also restore ph balance to the skin.  I love carrying a mist in my pool or beach bag.  My skin stays moist and refreshed throughout the day.

RECOMMENDATION:

Maya Chia’s The Optimist- I get SO excited for any new Maya Chia product and The Optimist was no exception.  This gem is housed in a dark glass bottle, preserving every last drop of goodness.  Smells divine with hints of neroli, sweet orange, and ylang ylang.  The formula itself feels so hydrating on the skin and refreshing with white tea, antioxidants, fatty acids and phytonutrients- just to name a few.  I can’t forget the actual spray function.  It works so well!  I know it might sound funny, but after trying hundreds of mists in my day, the spray function is actually quite important.  You don’t want the mist to feel like it’s attacking your skin or spraying you in the eye!  The Optimist sprays so well all over the face.  The founder Susanne nailed it!  I use mine in the morning after cleansing my skin and at night before my serums.  Get it here!

GLOWING SKIN- Who doesn’t want glowing skin?  But especially in the summer.  The combination of sun kissed skin with a slight glow is enough to make anyone swoon a little.  I’m a sucker for a healthy glow and when your skin needs a little help I’m also all about creating your own glow.

RECOMMENDATION:

Maya Chia’s Highlight Of The Day- What is Highlight Of The Day?  It is this bottle filled with liquid radiance- I know sounds too good to be true, but it’s not.  It comes in 3 shades.  Golden hour- a golden, warm champagne radiance and Happy Hour- a cool pink toned radiance, Afternoon Delight- a peachy-pink golden glow.  You apply it really however you want!  I love applying mine on my upper cheek bone, bridge of my nose, in the upper middle section of my brows, cupid’s bow, and middle of chin.  All the normal places you would use a traditional highlighter.  You can even apply it on the inner corners of your eyes to wake them up.  You can apply it over your foundation or mix it with your foundation or just wear it by itself.  I’ve done them all, and love the effect it gives.  You literally look like your lit from within.  As a mom, these have been serious game changers!  I look more awake and they last.  Get them here!

Summer Skincare Essentials

I love getting summer essentials for skincare from The Choosy Chick, they always have something for the whole family!

SELF TANNER- Who doesn’t want to look like they’ve already been in the sun, even when they haven’t?  That would be me.  Having a little sun kissed skin always helps to make everyone look a little more put together.  It hides imperfections too.  Plus, after being all wrapped up in the winter months it’s nice to have a little self tanner on hand before the big dip in the pool for the first time.

RECOMMENDATION:

ECO Tan- Love this self tanning lotion.  It’s a great buildable lotion.  You can always apply more if you need more color.  It doesn’t smell like a normal self tanner.  You know that smell.  It comes in a tube and is a cream/lotion.  It can be used for face or body.  I made sure to exfoliate before application.  I would apply to dry skin.  I noticed it took about 6 hours or so for me to see a difference in color.  The color looks so realistic and natural.  Nothing fake looking.  It really blends so well too.  I noticed a difference after one application but after two I really looked like I had a good tan. Get the Invisible Tan here!

SUNSCREEN- It goes without saying that sunscreen is vital for the summer months.  No one wants to look extra crispy! If you haven’t ditched conventional sunscreens you really need too.  Read all about why they toxic in a blog I did here.  Sunscreen also helps protect you from everyday UV damage that we all encounter.

RECOMMENDATION:

Raw Elements Sunscreen Lotion-  I really love that Raw Elements has a pump version now.  This formula also comes in an eco tin and is great for all over body.  It does leave behind a more white hue but when rubbed in well it’s not as noticeable.  I love how moisturizing it felt on my skin.  It’s also very water resistant-up to 80 minutes before you need to reapply.  Overall, I was impressed with the performance of this sunscreen.  It’s a really great pool sunscreen or at the beach sunscreen when your in and out of water all day.  It really holds up so well.  It didn’t burn and my skin didn’t feel sticky.  A great sunscreen for kids and adults!  Get yours here!

LIP MOISTURE/PROTECTION- People often think of hydration for their lips but they don’t think of protecting them from the elements.  Even more important!  The skin on your lips is the most fragile and just like the rest of your body takes a beating from the sun.

RECOMMENDATION:

Raw Elements Pink Lip Shimmer- Not only can you protect your lips with SPF 30 but you can also keep them looking pretty with this pink lip shimmer. Just a subtle pink tint and hint of shimmer.  It’s also moisturizing.  They have a variety of options if you’re not into pink or shimmer.  Check them out here!

ALOE VERA GEL- After a day in the sun, your skin often wants nothing more than to be cooled off.  Aloe helps to take away the heat and soothe irritated skin.  Many aloe vera gels you buy are just full of added synthetics so it’s important to know which one you’re buying.  You just want the real stuff!

RECOMMENDATION:

Badger Aloe Vera Gel- This is the closest thing you’re going to get to literally having an aloe plant with you at all times.  It’s the real deal and contains pure aloe.  I love applying this after a day at the pool or beach.  My skin feels instantly revived!  I love that it comes in a tub for easy application. Get it here!

BUG SPRAY- Anyone else need a bug spray in the summer?  The critters like to come out in full steam and I’m all about protecting myself with something that isn’t toxic.  Most bug sprays contain harmful ingredients that you don’t want being sprayed near your body.

RECOMMENDATION-

Badger Anti-Bug Spray- This spray is completely nontoxic!  You don’t have to worry about spraying this on you or your kids.  When used according to the instructions this spray works.  It contains no toxic DEET or synthetics.  It is organic and uses the power of essential oils to keep the bugs away.  Get it here!

Summer skincare essentials

Credo Beauty has it all when it comes to natural beauty!

EYE SERUM- Having an eye serum is crucial all year round in any skincare routine.  But especially in the summer when there’s a lot of squinting from being out in the sun and overall sun damage occurring.  Since the skin around your eye is so delicate it’s important to nourish it with essential antioxidants and vitamins to restore what’s been lost in the sun.

RECOMMENDATION:

Kahina Eye Serum- I’ve tried a ton and to be honest there’s a lot out there that don’t impress me when it comes to eye serums.  This however, is in a league of it’s own.  I can noticeably tell a difference when I use this eye serum.  I don’t have the tired eye look, it minimizes puffiness and it keeps my fine lines looking obsolete.  I know, sounds amazing huh?  One trick I’ve done since the beginning is to apply at night then put it in the fridge for in the morning.  Then when I apply in the morning it’s cool and perks my underneath eye area up even more.  I even mentioned this to the owner Katharine and she said yes, she does the same!  Phew, I wasn’t crazy.  Anyways, if you’ve been searching for an eye serum, search no further-this is it!  Get it here!

EYE MASKS- Have you heard of eye masks?  They’re these little eye masks that you put underneath your eyes.  I love them!!  Your skin under the eye area as I’ve mentioned is delicate and needs all the tlc you can give it.  These eye masks help to hydrate, de-puff and revive the eye area.

RECOMMENDATION:

Honest Hazel Eye Masks- These are the best.  They come in pairs in a package.  I take them out of the package and apply them underneath my eye area.  I do this in the morning as I’m brushing my teeth.  It helps to make my mama eyes a little less tired, as well as wake me up.  They feel so refreshing and cool.  I even put them in the fridge over night for extra de-puffing action!  Trust me you need these.  Get them here!

SOOTHING NIGHT SERUM- After you’ve been in the sun it’s important to replenish your skin with a serum that’s going to give your skin the vitamins and minerals that it needs.  Skin that’s been in the sun often needs to be soothed and given ingredients that will help calm it and minimize redness.

RECOMMENDATION:

Marie Veronique’s Soothing B3 Serum- This is a powerful serum!  It’s main ingredient B3 helps calm inflammation and help ceramide rejuvenate production.  It acts like a gel when it goes on your skin, leaving a serious glow all day long.   This serum helps to reduce inflammation.  My redness was reduced and my skin looked more even and clear.  I love that it is fragrance free and essential oil free, great for those with the most sensitive skin types and especially after skin that’s been in the sun all day.  Great for night time or day time, this is a must in anyone’s skincare routine!  Get your Soothing B3 Serum here!

TINTED MOISTURIZER- Who doesn’t want a tinted moisturizer in the summer months?  Not only does a tinted moisturizer help bring your whole look together but also protect skin.  You don’t have to sacrifice coverage just because you’re going to be out in the sun.

RECOMMENDATION:

Suntegrity 5-In-1 Moisturizer- This tinted moisturizer is so good!  It definitely hits all the marks for a great tinted sunscreen.  From superb coverage, hydration and good tint.  Plus, it offers a broad spectrum spf of 30.  It provides spf coverage with non-nano zinc oxide.  It also comes in four colors which makes it easy to find one that matches your skin tone.  I love this tinted moisturizer because it feels more like a foundation to me then just a lotion with a slight tint.  I like a little more coverage and this provides it without looking cakey or overly done.  It wears well in the water too!  I love how smooth and even the formula looks on the skin.  Trust me, you’ll love it!  Grab yours here!

BODY SCRUB- this is key for keeping skin looking smooth and flake free during the summer months.  Have you ever been out in the sun, got a little tan or maybe sunburn and then a week or two later the flakes start showing up?  It’s dead skin and it needs to be exfoliated. This is where a body scrub comes in!  Keeping your skin looking amazing all summer long, plus so many scrubs add lots of hydration too.

RECOMMENDATION:

Herbivore Coco Rose Body Polish- This scrub is what body scrub dreams are made of.  First it smells amazing!  It sloughs off the dead skin with sugar and then moisturizes with shea butter and coconut oil.  A skin treat for sure!  You won’t want to leave home without this.  Get it here!
